<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvements made to bolts and locks.
The present invention relates to locks and bolts for doors, barriers, etc., and relates more particularly to the type of locks in which a cylinder is rotatably mounted either on the movable part or on the fixed part of the door, and comprises a spiral groove in which a tenon fixed to the other part of the door works.
According to the invention, the cylinder comprising a helical groove cut therein is rotatably mounted either in the movable part or in the fixed part of the door, and is provided with appropriate means by which it can be rotated
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
at will. The other part is provided with a tenon which is capable of penetrating into the spiral groove of the cylinder, to the position to which the latter is generally brought by a handle or button. The spiral groove ends in a non-spiral portion, and when it is desired to close, the tenon rotates the cylinder, said tenon then reaching into the non-spiral portion of the groove.
To open the movable part of the door, we must turn the handle or knob so as to rotate the cylinder until the tenon is released from the non-spiral portion of the groove, and reaches into the spiral or helical portion. .
The rotating cylinder can carry a locking bolt at its periphery and, apart from the rotation of the cylinder caused by the travel of the tenon in the helical groove, this locking bolt is brought to its closed position, in which it is engaged in. a strike plate which carries the tenon. The rotational movement of the cylinder can be reversed, and the locking bolt released, by an action exerted on a handle or knob which will rotate the cylinder in the opposite direction, means being provided between the cylinder and the handle or knob to allow said handle to return to the rest position while it is inoperative.
The invention will be described in more detail in support of the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a lock applied to a barrier, said lock being in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lock open.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of FIG. 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 4 is a plan view of FIG. 2.
La.Fig. 5 is a side view and in section of the device mounted inside a lock casing, and applied! a door.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of the housing.
Fig. 7 shows the striker plate in elevation.
The Pig. 8 shows a plan of the lock and the strike, partially cut away.
Fig. 9 is a section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 8, but representing the bolt in the disengagement position.
Fig. 10 is a plan view showing the locking pin about to engage in the cylinder.
Referring to the drawings, and in particular to Figs. 1 to 4 of these, it can be seen that a cylinder 1, comprising a helical groove 2 cut therein, is rotatably mounted on an axis 3, protruding from a plate 4 fixed to an upright barrier 5 using screws 6.
The groove extends partially around the cylinder, and ends in a rectilinear or non-spiral portion 2a, aellello extends over about two thirds of the periphery of the cylinder, from the start of the groove. The cylinder 1 is provided with a handle 7 by means of which it can be rotated on the axis 3, said handle constituting a counterweight which retains the cylinder by gravity in its normal recos position.
A plate 8 comprising a locking tenon 9 which is integral with it is fixed to the door or barrier 10 by means of screws 11, said tenon being capable of penetrating
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in the spiral throat? of the cylinder, the normal or rest position of which is shown in Figs. 2 and 4, position. to which said cylinder is ordinarily driven by the effect of the weight of the handle. In this case, and when the barrier is closed, the pin 9 enters the helical groove as shown in FIG. 4, ¯and thus rotate the cylinder and the handle in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, until the tenon reaches the end of the spiral portion of the groove 2 and arrives in the non-spiral portion 2a.
During this movement, the handle has moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, that is to say it has made a displacement of about three quarters of a turn to this position, the non-spiral end 2a of the groove acts. the manner of a stop for the tenon 9, and prevents the opening of the barrier. The handle rests on an ear 12 projecting from the plate 8, and the handle as well as the ear can be provided with holes 12a through which a padlock can be engaged in order to lock the barrier. To open the latter, the handle 7 will be lifted so as to rotate the cylinder until the pin 9 is released from the non-spiral portion 2a, and reaches into the spiral portion of the groove.
By continuing the movement of the handle to its normal resting position, the barrier will open, and, once the tenon is engaged in the spiral portion of the groove, the barrier will be pushed from there. The outside will cause the cylinder to rotate until the tenon is clear of the groove.
In Figs. 5 to 10, there is shown the device applied to a door, in a lock, in which case
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the cylinder 13 comprising its spiral groove 14 ending in a non-spiral portion 14a, is mounted in a housing 15 capable of being engaged in a mortise of a door 16.
A locking tenon 17 (corresponding to tenon 9) extends from a plate 18 fixed to the post 19 of the door frame, said tenon being normally placed so as to enter a transverse slot 20 of the front face of the lock case 15. A part forming a locking bolt 21 extends from the cylinder 14 and, as said cylinder rotates, the locking bolt 21 passes through a vertical slot 22 in the front face of the lock case 15, to come into contact with it. engage in a vertical slot 23 of the striker plate 18. At the periphery of the cylinder 14, and at one of its ends, teeth 24 are provided, the cylinder comprising axes 26 rotating in the lock case.
A wheel 27 comprising teeth on a part of its periphery meshes with the teeth 24, and is freely mounted on the neck 28, of a sleeve 29 which also rotates in the lock case and receives the square 30 intended for fixing. a suitable handle 31. An ear shown at 32, of the sleeve 29 works in the space existing between the teeth on the wheel 27, and limits the rotational movement of the sleeve 29, by coming to bear against a rod 33 of the casing.
In operation, and assuming the door is about to be closed (see Fig. 10) the pin 17 itself being about to enter the transverse slot 20 of the lock case, if the movement started is continued , the locking pin 17 will engage in the groove 14 of the cylinder 13. During the travel of the door to its closed position, the pin 17
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
will rotate the cylinder, driving the locking bolt 21 from its position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 5 to the position shown in solid lines, position in which it is engaged in. slot 23 in the strike plate 18.
When the tenon 17 has reached the start of the non-spiral portion 14a of the groove, the bolt 21 has already started to enter the V-shaped tent 3, the non-spiral portion of the groove allowing the locking bolt to perform a final vertical displacement downward in the V-shaped groove, resulting in jamming preventing the door from moving sideways and swinging.
. To release the bolt 21, a handle 31 mounted on the square 30 is moved in the direction of the arrow indicated in FIG. 5, the lug 32 then coming to bear against a tooth of the wheel 37, which will turn the cylinder 13. As soon as this movement is initiated, the bolt 21 will withdraw from the slot 23, and when the cylinder has been turned sufficiently for the tenon 17 to pass from the non-spiral portion 14a into the spiral portion 14,., the door will begin to open.
If this opening movement is continued, the cylinder will be driven in rotation by the pin 17, and will return the locking bolt to the position shown in dotted lines & FIG. 5, and in solid lines in FIG. 9, the bolt 21 then resting on the socket designated at 29 and thus stopping the further rotation of the wheel 27. The socket 29 is returned to its normal position under the action of a coil spring 34 fixed to an ear 35 belonging to said socket on the one hand, and to the housing on the other hand. The handles are thus kept in the same position. The lug 32 limits the movement of the handle in the opposite direction & that indicated by the arrow, coming to meet the rod 33.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
If desired, an idler toothed wheel can be interposed between the teeth 24 of the cylinder and the toothed wheel 27. In this way, the handles could be further away from the edge of the door.
To keep the door locked, one can use any existing device, controlled by key or otherwise, and intended to prevent the rotation of the cylinder; for example., we can provide a lock disposed on the handle, such as those commonly used on the handles of automobiles.
