<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SUSPENSION OF BICYCLES,
MOTORCYCLES OR SIMILAR AND NEW HANDLEBAR OBTAINED "
To prevent the transmission of shocks and vibrations to the rider of a bicycle or motorcycle, the saddle and the front fork have been resiliently mounted on the frame. This arrangement has serious drawbacks, in particular when the front wheel comprises braking means. In fact, one experiences great difficulties in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
controlling the brake by means of rigid articulated elements. Furthermore, the vibrations of the frame are inevitably transmitted to the handlebars and consequently to the hands and arms of the driver.
The technical problem, to which the Applicants provide a solution, consists in ensuring perfect suspension avoiding the transmission of shocks and vibrations even to the arms of the driver while allowing the use, for the control of the front brake, of articulated rigid elements.
The invention mainly consists in mounting the handlebars, by means of elastically deformable means, on the steering rod, journaled in the frame.
The invention extends to the new industrial product consisting of a handlebar comprising, between the parts receiving the hands of the driver and the members for fixing to the steering rod, elastically deformable means.
The elastically deformable means, ensuring the suspension of the handlebars on the steering rod, can be any without departing from the scope of the invention.
Certain embodiments are characterized by the following points applied separately or in any combination: a) Rubber is interposed between the middle region of the tube constituting the handlebar and a socket or a collar provided with means for fixing to the steering rod. in the form of a ring, b) This rubber ring can form a homogeneous block or it can be obtained by spiral winding of a rubber band. c) The bush may include means for allowing the modification of its internal diameter and consequently a variation in compression of the rubber. d) The socket can be attached directly to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
steering rod or via a stem.
c) The handlebars may include, in its middle region, a stem which is elastically articulated on the means for fixing to the steering rod.
In some cases, it is possible to combine, with the means indicated, locking members making it possible to eliminate the suspension of the handlebars or adjustable damping means.
The invention also extends to an embodiment of an elastic handlebar in which the handles are independently suspended. In this embodiment, the handlebar is in three main parts, a central part fixed to the steering rod and two end parts connected to the central part by elastically deformable means.
In another embodiment, the handlebar consists of an elastically deformable metal frame coated in a rubber sheath.
The invention also extends to other particular points which will appear in the following text made with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example only, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of an elastically mounted handlebar according to the invention but with a partial section taken along the line I-I of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a side view with section taken along line II-II of the previous figure.
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of an embodiment with a locking device.
FIG. 4 is a partial sectional view of an embodiment with a damping device.
Figure 5 is a side view with section taken along the line V-V of Figure 6 and illustrating another elastic mounting of the handlebar.
Figure 6 is a plan corresponding to the previous figure,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
FIG. 7 is a side view with partial axial section of another embodiment.
FIG. 8 is a plan with partial section of a handlebar with handles with independent suspensions.
FIG. 9 is a plan with partial section of an alternative embodiment of a handlebar with handles with independent suspensions.
Figure 10 is a partial sectional plan of another embodiment.
FIG. 11 illustrates an embodiment of a device limiting the oscillations of the handlebars.
FIG. 12 is a longitudinal section of a locking device making it possible to put the elastic assembly out of action.
Figure 13 illustrates the mounting of a handlebars with elastic suspension on a steering rod provided with a stem.
In the example illustrated by Figures 1 and 2, the handlebar 1 comprises two end parts 1a for receiving the hands of the driver and a central part 1b.
The elastic mounting of the handlebar is ensured by a rubber ring 2 which is interposed between the middle region of the part 1B of the handlebar and a sleeve or collar 3. In this embodiment, the ring 2 is obtained by spiral winding of a rubber band. A ring 4, split at 5, is interposed between the rubber mass and the collar 3, the tightening of which can be carried out by means of a bolt 6 and a nut 7. As a clamping member, an externally knurled nut can be used to allow manual movement causing a variation in the adjustment of the elastic tension of the handlebar suspension.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the example of Figure 1, the collar 3 is integral with a bracket 8 rigidly fixed to the steering rod 9 using any suitable means.
For a determined adjustment of the suspension, the user can modify at will, by a simple movement of his hands on the parts of the handlebars, the action of this suspension. In fact, when the driver's hands are placed near the ends of the parts 1a, the moment of force exerted on these ends with respect to the axis of the elastic joint of the ring is important. On the other hand, as the driver approaches his hands to the part 1b, this moment decreases to become zero when the hands rest on the part 1b coaxial with the rubber element 2.
FIG. 3 illustrates the combination, with an elastic assembly as indicated above, of locking means between the collar 3 and the handlebars. For this purpose, a split nut 10 which can be moved manually is used, screwed onto the part 1b of the handlebar and which comprises a conical outer part 10a pressing against a corresponding bearing surface 3a of the collar 3,
Friction means can be provided between the conical parts 10a and 3A so as to produce a damping device, the value of which can be adjusted up to locking.
FIG. 4 is a variant in which friction washers 12 are interposed between a collar 3 b of the sleeve 3 and a nut 11, a lock nut may be provided at 14.
FIGS. 5 ′ and 6 illustrate another elastic assembly in which the handlebars 1 is provided with a stem 15 in the form of a fork which is articulated on a part 16 fixed rigidly on the steering rod 9.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The articulation of the fork 15, on the part 16, is produced by means of a rubber bush 2.
FIG. 7 illustrates a variant of FIG. 2 and shows an embodiment in which the collar 3 is mounted directly on the steering rod 9, the stem 8 being omitted.
An embodiment, making it possible to obtain an independent suspension for each part 1a of the handlebars, is more especially shown in FIG. 8. The handlebars then have three main parts, the two ends 1a and the central part 1b. The ends 1a are connected to part 1b by elastically deformable means constituted by rubber rings 2, After each ring 2 has been engaged, each end lk is raised and the parts 1a whose ends lr are folded back with play are engaged. in the ls gorges.
In the example of FIG. 9, the parts 1a are guided on the part lb, the elastic connection being provided by cylindrical rubber blocks 20 angularly connected at their ends by pins 21 and 22, respectively to the parts lb and there, the rubber blocks working in torsion.
FIG. 10 illustrates another embodiment also included within the scope of the invention and in which the handlebar is constituted by a metal frame formed by a wire or an elastically deformable steel strip 25 coated in a mass 26 of rubber.
In the example of FIG. 11, the docile '3 is provided with a notch 28 the ends of which constitute stops for a stud 29 integral with the handlebar 1. This device makes it possible to limit the movements of the handlebar 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The locking device, illustrated more specifically in FIG. 12, consists of a finger 30 movable in translation in a support 31 rigidly fixed to the handlebar 1. This finger has two grooves 32 and 33 in which can engage a ball 34 subjected to the action of a spring. By moving the finger 30 in the wens of the arrow 35, the end of the finger 30 is engaged in one of the notches 36 formed in the folded end of the socket 3. This device makes it possible to lock the handlebar 1 on the socket. 3 in any desired position.
In the case of a steering rod 9 provided with a stem 38, the handlebar 1 is mounted at the end of the stem 38 by means of a collar as illustrated. The elastic articulation can be placed either at 39 or at 40 or else two articulations can be provided, one at 39, the other at 40.
It is obvious that the embodiments described and represented are given here only by way of indication and not by way of limitation. Any modifications or variants which do not change the main characteristics described above, nor the aim pursued, remain within the scope of the invention.
