 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 EMI3.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

    (Electric jable with artificially reinforced capacity.

   The introduction into the industry of individual machine control, which is becoming more and more general, necessitates the installation of a large number of small motors, most often oversized, which creates a poor network power factor. In many networks, this power factor represents a value such that the economy of the power stations is adversely affected. Consequently, the power plants have, in many cases, established their tariffs taking into account the power factor in order to invite their customers to take the necessary measures to reduce the value of the dewatted current requested from the network. that this is possible. The cos can drop to values of 0.4 to 0.5.

   Monitoring of the power factor, as well as its reading, can easily be done by the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 placement of rotary compensation groups or static capacitors.

   In the networks where the number of current consumers is very important, that is to say in the cities, distribution is mainly done by cables. The cables have, compared to the overhead lines, a great electrostatic capacity, and consequently act in the reverse order of a choke by improving the power factor of the network in a natural way. This inherent capacity is not sufficient in most cases to improve the cos and bring it to a favorable value.

   Thanks to the present invention, the inherent capacity of the cables is artificially increased. Cables-capacitors, that is to say capacitors in the form of cables, are already known which are used as a replacement for static capacitor units. These do not participate in the transport of energy, but rather constitute additional equipment for the network. The present invention makes it possible to produce not only a phase reducer, but at the same time an energy transp.ort agent.

   The increase in the electrostatic capacity is obtained by embedding the corrugated layers in the cable insulation. The conductive layers consist of thin copper or other metal bands, a layer of thin wire or the like. These conductive layers are alternately connected to conductors with voltage of different phase. They therefore constitute capacitors in parallel with the current conductors and compensating by their capacitance for a certain dewatted power. The conductive layers are insulated from one another by insulating layers, the thickness of which depends on the voltage prevailing between two neighboring conductive layers. Depending on the capacity required, one or more conductive layers are superimposed on top of each other and are suitably connected.

   Conductive layers can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 EMI3.1
 sometimes be subjected to the potential only in relation to the neutral; the thickness of the insulating layer is then dimensioned accordingly. The dewatted power absorption is then modified and becomes proportional to the potential with respect to neutral. rour long cable lines, the charging current in the thin conductive layers would, on the supply side, reach values such that inadmissible heating would be the consequence.

   For these extended lines, the conductive layers are supplied in accordance with the present invention, by the actual conductor of the cable which, for this purpose, is split, in order to split it for example in two, one half of the conductor can be formed as a rope. the ordinary way and the other half will be arranged concentrically around the core conductor; it will be isolated from the latter by an insulating layer, conditioned to the operating voltage.

   In a triphse cable, for example, each strand will be formed in this way. The central conductors are connected to phases R, S and T. The concentric conductor of the strand S will be connected to the central conductor of the strand R. The transport of the energy of the phase R will therefore be done in part on the central conductor, l of the strand R and partly on the concentric conductor of the strand S. The central conductor of the strand S, which conducts the current of the. phase S, will be connected to, u concentric conductor of strand T and the central conductor T to the concentric conductor of strand R. In this way, the central conductors constitute, with the concentric conductors belonging to other phases, static capacitors , by increasing the inherent capacity of a cable and thereby absorbing a certain quantity of twisted energy.

   It is not absolutely necessary that the section of the central conductor and that of the concentric conductor are identical; one can choose, according to the needs, any other report of the sections. We could for example

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 also provide for the subdivision into three parts of the useful section required of the total conductor and belonging to different phases.

   By splitting the conductor described above, intense capacitance currents are achieved without having the drawbacks resulting from the use of the thin metal bands forming a conductive layer.

   For cables with a relatively small conductor cross-section, the subdivision of the latter is difficult. In this case, the central conductor is replaced by an imitation conductor, for example a lead tube, a core of textile material covered with a conductive sheath, etc. The conductor proper is then arranged concentrically around the tube. the latter and separated from it by a suitable insulating layer. The connections correspond among other things to those of the subdivided conductor, with the difference that the central conductor is only traversed by a load current.

   If by the method described above the capacity to be obtained was not reached, there remains the possibility of adding other conductive layers embedded between insulating layers as has been described for the cable not comprising the subdivided conductor. . The connection of the various conductive layers is to be carried out as already mentioned, that is to say they are connected alternately to the phase connected to the central conductor or to the phase connected to the concentric conductor. To avoid in this case also an excessive heating of the thin conductive layers by the load current, these will be discontinuous in the joints. The conductive layers are connected to the phases in the joint and the conductive layers are advantageously connected to the main conductor in each second joint.

   In this way the conductive layers are only crossed by a load current proportional to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 section of cable which is taken into account and not the charging current of the whole line. For networks with variable load, it is desirable to adapt the wattage power to these variations, to avoid overcompensation.

  To this end, the terminations of the conductive layers will come out of the terminal boxes to end in disconnectors so as to be able to connect them to the voltage meeting the needs. For extended lines, another variability of the capacitance can be obtained by connecting the conductive layers to disconnectors at both ends in order to be able to unite them or not to the voltage. The conductive layers will be discontinuous at one point on the line, for example in a joint, and if the line has no joints, in the cable itself.

   By choosing the location of this discontinuity, in order to obtain a subdivision of the conductive layers like 1: 2, it will be possible by connecting it to one of the ends to insert 1/3 of the Dewatted power by inserting only the other end 2/3 and finally by connecting the two ends the whole of it.

  By subdividing the conductive layers into two groups, it would be possible, under the same conditions, to vary Ea capacitance in sixths. By sectioning the line in substations it would be possible to obtain other subdivisions.

   With the subdivided conductor cable without additional conductive layers, such a decrease in capacitance would only be possible when the payload had proportionally decreased, so that it could be carried by only one of the conductor subdivisions. As has already been pointed out, the central conductor can be given a very small section for. also obtain, if the need arises, variability in capacity. In some cases, it will even be possible to cut the cable entirely at one end and leave it running.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 only as a capacitor, which can easily be done, if several cables run in parallel in a network.

   The enhanced capacitance of the type of cable, according to the present invention, has the further advantage of creating greater protection against surges. By a suitable bonding of the conductive layers, for example of the inner layer with the conductor, or of the outer layer with the lead sheath through relays, it would be possible to easily achieve selective sectioning of cable sections, at any occurrence of defect, occurring in it from outside or from inside.

   By disconnecting the defective conductive layers, the cable can be re-energized until the repair can be done easily, given that it still contains, by its constitution, completely sound insulating layers, which, depending on the condition of the ground, allow the re-energization, ion for a more or less long time. apart from what is said above there are naturally other possible combinations. The present invention can extend to all known types of cables.

   The diameter of the cable will naturally increase due to the possible artificial increase in the diameter of the conductor or the subdivision of the conductor, which is compensated by better cooling of the cable and therefore by a higher allowable load than that of the conductor. a common cable of the same section; the effective cross section of a given cable can be reduced, thus saving copper. The higher price of such an artificially increased capacity cable will be more than offset by this as well as by the savings made by power factor compensation.

   The accompanying drawings show various exemplary embodiments and their applications.

   Fig. 3 shows another possible embodiment by means of an inverter f. The conductive layers can be earthed; the cable will thus operate as an ordinary cable, carrying only the useful energy, or else the conductive layers can be put under tension in a manner similar to FIG. 2. and so the full capacity of the cable will kick in. The resistors r limit the discharge current of the conductive layers when they are grounded. By leaving the switch e and the cable connected to the power supply end open, the inverter f in its energized position, the cable will act as a capacitor only, without intervening in the transport of a payload. .
