Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   L'adoucisseur d'eau préparé en conformité de l'invention peut être appliqué de manière à adoucir de l'eau contenant des sels de calcium solubles, en présence, ou non, d'autres sels solubles, tels, par exemple, que des sels de magnésium, ce produit pouvant recevoir les usages suivants : - comme adoucisseur d'eau en maintenant les bases alcalino-- terreuses à l'état soluble; - dans les blanchisseries pour économiser le savon en se com- binant avec les bases alcalino-terreuses contenues dans l'eau de lavage; - pour déchauler le cuir dans l'industrie du tannage; = pour dissoudre les composés de cnaux qui peuvent se produire dans les textiles souillés;   =   pour éviter les dépôts de sels aloalino-terreux formés dans les systèmes de chauffage par eau chaude;

 froidissement employée dans les usines de mise en boîtes des conser- ves; - pour éviter les irrégularités de teinture dans les tissus, en maintenant les composés alcalino-terreux quelconques à l'état soluble; - pour éviter la formation de taches de savon sur la toile, pendant la teinture;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PROCESS FOR SOFTENING THE WATER AND
DISSOLUTION OF CALCIUM SALTS.

   The invention particularly relates to a method for softening water, such as, for example, water which is hard due to the presence of calcium salts, or the like, and for dissolving these salts so as to reduce or to remove the hardness of the water, and particularly by the use of soluble thiotetraphosphates.

   According to the invention, the improved method of softening water comprises treating it with soluble thiotetraphosphates, especially the alkali metal thiotetraphosphates. These thiotetraphosphates were recently discovered by the Applicant and they are the subject of patents in the United States under the n: 2.026.503 and 2.033.913, such as, for example, sodium mono = thiotetraphosphate Na6P4O12S, or tri-thotetraphospha - sodium Na6P4O10S3 'or the corresponding potassium salts

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 or ammonium.

   The softening of the water can be carried out, according to the Applicant's method, using the true alkaline thiotetraphosphates, prepared according to the methods described in the patents above. We particularly recommend sodium thiotetraphosphates for the purposes considered, since they are prepared in a more economical manner and they give excellent results; however, any other soluble thiotetraphosphate, or any other thiotetraphosphates can be used for this purpose in the process.

   The water softener prepared in accordance with the invention can be applied so as to soften water containing soluble calcium salts, in the presence, or not, of other soluble salts, such as, for example, as magnesium salts, this product being able to receive the following uses: - as water softener by maintaining the alkaline earth bases in the soluble state; - in laundries to save soap by combining with alkaline earth bases contained in the washing water; - to loosen leather in the tanning industry; = to dissolve cenal compounds that can occur in soiled textiles; = to avoid deposits of aloalino-earth salts formed in hot water heating systems;

   - to prevent deposits of alkaline earth compounds in steam boilers and their supply pipes; to prevent deposits of alkaline earth compounds in water cooling systems for automobiles; - to avoid the formation of alkaline earth bases in the form of precipitates in the water which must be cooled in machines for the production of artificial ice; to prevent the formation of alkaline-earth precipitates on the outside of cans and from the re-water.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 chilling used in canning factories; - to avoid dyeing irregularities in fabrics, keeping any alkaline earth compounds in a soluble state; - to prevent the formation of soap stains on the canvas, during dyeing;

   on for cleaning lime deposits which may occur @ on / on cement or brick walls} - as a water softener used for washing live animals or for preparing human baths; - for cleaning or washing dishes; - to soften the water in which any object can be washed and thus reduce the amount of soap used; for washing rayon, for example; for degreasing wool; - boiling in the apparatus used in the bleaching industry; - baking silk; - to ensure the increase of the penetration of the dye in the textiles, by cleaning of the traces of alkaline compounds = earth.

   In these applications, it is recognized that water softening by the addition of an alkali metal thiotetraphosphate is much more effective than by applying the prior methods of water softening. For example, to soften water used in laundries for washing fabrics, or to prevent the deposition of alkaline earth compounds in steam boilers and other power plants operating with water containing soluble salts of lime , in the presence, or not, of magnesium salts, etc ..., is added to 4500 liters of water, approximately, containing, for example 48 parts by weight of calcium per million water, in the form of soluble salts , usually sulphates, bicarbonates or chlorides, 1 kg.

   About 350 thiotetraphos-

 sodium phate or about 1 kg. 630 of potassium thiotetraphosphate, prepared according to either of the patents referred to above. As a result of this treatment, the relatively large concentration of free calcium ions in the water is very considerably reduced, or entirely removed, by combining them into soluble compounds or radicals, only slightly ionized, due to the presence of thiotetraphosphate.

  It has been recognized that in the softening of water for steam boilers and supply lines, calcium compounds and other similar compounds do not deposit in the form of a crust in said steam boilers and the supply lines, despite the heating and concentration that occurs.

   Likewise, the water may be softened in a manner which is in substance the same, in any of the other water softening operations, and, in particular, in the other industries mentioned in the above. list above.

   Applicants have recognized that water can be softened in this manner and in accordance with their method much more efficiently, since in order to completely soften the water it is necessary to use an amount of thiotetraphosphate. of alkali metal which is less than the amount of other materials previously used for such purposes. This result can be easily demonstrated by a simple test of the properties of these tetraphosphates for water softening. This demonstration results from the amount of water softening substance that must be added to keep the calcium in solution.

   Although, in the above discussion, thio. tetraphosphates prepared by the two different processes according to US Patents Nos. 2,025,503 and 2,033,913, the field of the present invention is not limited to the application of the products obtained by these two processes. It should be well understood that there may be other processes for the manufacture of soluble thiotetraphosphates and it is easily seen that there are many thioteraphos

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 phates in which the oxygen atoms of the tetraphosphate can be replaced by a sulfur atom.

   For example, sodium mono = thiotetraphosphate Na6P4O12S can be prepared according to US patent N 2.025.503, but there are many other possible thiotetraphosphates, such as:
Na6P4O10S4
Na6P4O10S5
Na6P4O10S6
Na6P4O10S7
Na6P4O10S8
Na6P4O10S9
Na6P4O10S10
Na6P4O10S11
Na6P4O10S12
Na6P4O10S13
In addition, the sodium radical can be replaced, in whole or in part, by the potassium or ammonium radical, one of these radicals, or both, then giving thiotetraphosphates containing different bases, such as for example Na5KP4O12S or Na4KNH4P4O12S .

   In other words, one can write the formula of thiotetraphosphates containing any or all of the basic radicals of alkali metals, in place of Na6 given in the above examples of the various thiotetraphosphates, where one or more sulfur atoms replace oxygen atoms in the formula. The property of a thiotetraphosphate of possessing water-softening properties is probably related, in the opinion of the Applicant, to its easy solubility in water and all soluble thiotetraphosphates have been recognized as possessing the property of softening the water.
