 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Lorsque l'arbre à manivelle II a

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

     N'importe quel nombre de stabilisateurs 80 peut être disposé autour du mote.ur; par exemple, comme le montre la fig. 14, il peut y avoir trois stabilisateurs en tout, dis- posés à 120 l'un de l'autre.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

  'Improvements to internal combustion engines and other machines and to pumps of the engine plate type.

   The present invention relates to improvements in the drive plate mechanism that can be employed to transform a reciprocating motion into a rotational motion, as in an internal combustion engine, or a rotational motion into a reciprocating motion. - comes, like in a reciprocating pump.

   An engine plate mechanism essentially comprises three active parts:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 I. A crank knob or other cylindrical member (here called the crank), able to rotate about an axis inclined at an oblique angle with respect to its own axis 2. A driving member carried by the crank, and 3. A means (called here the "stabilizer") to force the motor organ to turn all in one piece with the crank.

   It is known (see for example the English patent N.

  398.553) that it is possible to force the rotary member to move in such a way that all the points of the latter being in the same plane normal to the axis of the crank and at the same radius with respect to the 'crank axis describe identically similar paths. The motion of a driving member forced to move in this manner is here called a "symmetrical" motion! And the present invention relates only to a driving mechanism in which the active driving member is forced to describe a symmetrical motion, although, As will appear in the following, the present invention can make use of an auxiliary driving member to constitute the stabilizer and this auxiliary driving member is in general obliged to move so as not to describe a symmetrical movement.

   The object of the present invention is to allow the active motor member to move symmetrically by forcing a stabilizer or a part thereof to move in a plane.

   Before the mechanical construction of a driving mechanism according to the present invention is described in detail, the geometric theory of the mechanism will be explained with reference to Figs. I, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.

   Fig. I is a schematic side view showing the essential components of an engine plate mechanism, except the stabilizer. A motor member D is carried by a bearing B which is mounted on the crank F. The crank is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 inclined at an angle -, - with respect to the axis X X of the crank shaft E. The motor member D is assumed to be a circular disc for simplicity.

   It will be assumed that P is the lowest point of the periphery of the disc D when the axis GM of the crank F is in a vertical plane, as shown in FIG. I, M being the point where the plane of the disc D is pierced by the axis X X of the crank shaft. If the crank shaft E then begins to rotate about its own axis so that the GM axis of the crank F rises out of the plane of the paper, point P moves to a new position Q but the path of The movement of P depends on the nature of the stress imposed on the motor organ. It will be assumed that the motor member D is obliged to describe a symmetrical movement as has been defined above, so that all the points such as P describe identically similar paths.

   As we know, in these circumstances, P describes a lemniscate located on the surface of a sphere having its center in M. The shape of the lemniscate is seen in plan in fig. 2 and in elevation in FIG. I.

   We can consider the GMP plan. When the shaft E rotates, this plane oscillates around M. If YY is a line arranged vertically below XX and at a distance c from this, the plane GMP intersects this line at a point N and it It is obvious that there are two extreme positions R and S of this point and an average position T which is vertically below M. We will come back to the movement of N along the line YY in the following.

   The diagram in fig. 3 shows another motor plate mechanism and the parts corresponding to the parts of fig.I are designated by corresponding lowercase letters. In fig. 3, the gm axis of the crank f is inclined on the xx axis

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 of the crankshaft at an angle /. 19. While the motor member D in FIG. I moves symmetrically, the corre- sponding organ d in fig. 3 does not. Cn will assume that point B. of the periphery of d is driven so as to always lie in the vertical plane containing the xx axis of the crankshaft. p therefore describes an arc of a circle around m as the center.

   A line yy is disposed at a distance ± vertically below xx, like the line YY in fig. I.

   We will consider the gmp plan. It is obvious that if mp is still in the vertical plane containing xx and yy, the point of intersection of the plane gmp with yy will coincide with the point of intersection of mp with yy. The line mp intersects the line yy at a point n and it is obvious that this point is aligned from one extreme !: to the other s around an average position! when the shaft turns.

   We can prove by a mathematical analysis that provided that the angle goes twice the angle / 3 and provided that the cranks B and b are in phase, the movement of point N will be identical in all respects to the movement of point n. Use is made of this fact in the present invention although it is not always necessary to employ a second motor member as in FIG. 3, because in some cases the motion of point n can be imitated by other means.

   It can also be demonstrated that the straight line MN of FIG. I which is the line in which the GMP plane intersects the vertical plane containing XX and YY, is identical at all times to the straight line mn of FIG. 3. This shows that the YY line must not be parallel to the axis of the crankshaft and must not be a straight line, and the identity between the movements of N and n will be valid for any which YY layer located in the vertical plane containing the axis of the crankshaft.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   Furthermore, it will be understood from the considerations of the symmetry of the mechanism that the above discussion applies to any plane containing the axis of the crank shaft; a vertical plane was chosen simply for the purpose of explanation.

   According to a feature of the present invention, a drive plate mechanism comprises, in combination, a drive member carried on a crank rotatable about a crank shaft axis, a stabilizer having a part which is forced to move constantly. in a plane containing the axis of the crank shaft, a means of making this part of the stabilizer oscillate around the point of intersection of the crank axis and the axis of the crank shaft, with an amplitude equal to half of the amplitude of oscillation of the motor organ, around this point, and a means of restricting the relative rotational movement between the motor organ and the part of the stabilizer around the axis of the crank shaft.

   The stabilizer, as has been described with reference to FIG. 3, can be a second motor member, mounted on a crank in phase with the crank of the main motor member and inclined on the axis of the motor shaft by an angle equal to half the angle of inclination of the crank of the main drive unit.

   The shape of the connection between the motor member and the stabilizer must be such as to allow relative movement of two kinds:
I) Relative movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the crankshaft. The need for this is seen by comparing Figs. I and 3, from which it clearly follows that the movement of P from left to right is twice the movement of P.

   2) A relative rotation around the line MN. This is necessary because when the crankshaft @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 rotates, the main motor unit oscillates around this line at a full angle 2 and the stabilizer at a full angle 2 sec.

   When the stabilizer is constituted by a second driving member as described above, the connection can take dufférentes forms. In one form of the present invention, the connection in question is constituted by a connecting rod articulated to the motor member around an axis perpendicular to the plane GMN and articulated to the stabilizer around mn. In an alternative arrangement, the stabilizer simply comprises a radial arm which performs the movement discussed as that of mn above, and the motor member is pivotally mounted on this arm.

   The relative movement indicated in I) above is provided by a slotted guide surface provided in the motor member and by which the latter engages with the arm so that the motor member is not only free to turn on the arm but also to move as a whole in the direction of his own plane. A similar arrangement will correspond identically to the geometrical theory of figs. I and 3 described above.

   In another variant arrangement, the stabilizer, instead of being actuated by a second crank, receives the necessary movement through the intermediary of the motor member itself to which it is connected in such a way that a point thereon. ci moves in a plane containing the axis of the crank shaft with a speed at each instant which is identical to the speed that the corresponding point would undergo on an auxiliary motor member carried on a second crank having its inclined axis on the axis of the crank shaft at an angle of inclination equal to half the angle of inclination of the axis of the crank of the main driving member.

   Different particular embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to figK 4 to 14 of the accompanying drawings, among which:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

FIG. 4 is a vertical section through the driving member and associated parts of an internal combustion engine.

   Fig. 5 is a view of part of the stabilizer and its guides in section through line 5-5 of FIG. 4.

   Figs. 6 and 7 are schematic plan views of the guides of FIGS. 4 and 5.

   Fig. 8 is a view similar to FIG. 4 of another form of construction of the invention.

   Fig. 9 is a section taken along line 9-9 of FIG. 8.

   Fig. 10 shows a modification of the arrangement shown in FIG. 8.

   Fig. It is a vertical section of another alternative embodiment of the drive plate mechanism according to the present invention.

   Fig. 12 is a section taken partly by line 12A-12A and partly by line I2B-I2B of FIG. II.

   Figs. 13 and 14 are corresponding views of yet another variant of the drive plate mechanism according to the present invention, FIG. 14 being a section through line 14-14 of FIG. 13.

   In the internal combustion engine shown in fig. 4, 5, 6 and 7, there is an odd number of cylinders 10, 50 etc ... arranged symmetrically around a crank shaft II whose axis is indicated by the line XMX. The crank shaft is provided with two cranks, one of which is composed of two parts 12, 13 having a common axis MG and the other 14, located between the two parts 12 and 13, has an axis Mg. The Mg axis is at an angle of 22 1/2 to the axis of the crank shaft XMX and the Mg axis of the crank 14 is at an angle of II 1/4 to the 'axis of the crank shaft, i.e. half of the angle of the crank 12, 13.

   The cranks and the crankshaft constitute a construction in which the crank parts 12, 13, 14 are machined as a single piece, which is attached to the flanges of @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 crank 15, 16 by means of clamps 17, 18. The flanges 15 and 16 are formed integrally with the shaft parts II and can be provided with suitable balancing weights 19, 20. On the crank main 12, 13 is mounted a motor member 21 having the approximate shape of a double cone.

   Its hub parts 22 engage on the crank parts 12, 13 by means of ball bearings 23 and the edge of the motor member has spheres 24, 54 etc ... projecting outwards, each of which is engaged with the large end of a connecting rod 25, 55, etc ... It is understood that the number of spheres 24 is equal to the number of cylinders, which is seven in the example shown. The sphere 24 at the top of the pin 4 is in the position in which its center is in the vertical plane containing the axis of the crankshaft and its connecting rod 25 is in the internal dead center position with respect to the cylinder 10.

  The sphere 54 is outside the vertical plane, at an angle depending on the number of cylinders, and the connecting rod 55 is approximately in its position of external dead center with respect to its cylinder 50.

   The stabilizer for the mechanism comprises a radially extending pin 26 carried by a split sleeve 27 which is supported by the middle crank portion 14. At its lower end, the pin 26 carries a square block 28 mounted in such a manner. to be able to turn on it, formed of two parts and able to slide between arcuate vertical guide faces 30 (see also FIG. 5). The guide faces are formed integrally with a plate 32 which is attached to the motor housing 33 by bolts 34. The contact of the two parts of the square block 28 with the guide surfaces 30 prevents the block from moving perpendicularly. in the plane of FIG. 4.

  The engagement of the block on the pin 26 prevents it from moving left to right relative to the pin, and a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 flange 35 at the lower end of the spindle prevents the block from sliding down off the spindle.

   The motor member 21 is provided with two similar guide surfaces 36 made integrally with the member, between which slides a square block 38 similar to the square block 28. This square block is also mounted so as to be able to turn on the shaft. spindle 26 and it is disposed between the block 28 and a flange 40 of the spindle. It is understood that the lateral movement of the block 38 is prevented by its contact with the guide surfaces 36 and by its engagement on the spindle; the upward movement along the rod is prevented by the flange 40 and the downward movement by the contact of two blocks with each other. In this way, therefore, the block 28 is prevented from sliding upward on the spindle.

   The guide surfaces 30 are spaced equal distances apart on each side of the vertical plane containing the axis of the crank shaft. The center line of the pin 26 is therefore obliged to always remain in this vertical plane. On the other hand, the guide surfaces 36 are spaced at equal distances one from each: pot of the plane containing the axis MG of the main crank and an imaginary point P on the motor member, which is the lowest point when the parts are in the position shown in fig.4.

  From the discussion given above with reference to Figs. I, 2 and 3, it follows that the GMP plane of FIG. 4 always intersects the axis of the fixed guides 30 at the same point as the center line of the stabilizer pin 26. The diagram of FIG. 6 shows in plan the arrangement of the guides 36 and 30 corresponding to the arrangement of the parts shown in FIG. 4, and since the spindle 26 is at the extreme limit of its movement to the left, the axes of the two guides coincide and the square blocks 38 and 28 are therefore in correspondence with one another. When the crankshaft II has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 turned at a right angle in the direction of the arrow (fig. 4), the axis of the spindle 26 is a vertical line passing through M.

   Block 38 is located halfway along guide 36 and block 28 halfway along guide 30, so that the parts assume the position shown schematically in FIG. 7.

   It can be seen that the motor member is prevented from effecting a relative rotational movement with respect to the stabilizer about the axis of the crank shaft by the engagement of the guides 36 with the block 38. The however, the motor unit moves from side to side (as shown in fig. 4). with twice the amplitude of movement of the stabilizer pin 26 and the difference between these two amplitudes is provided. by the sliding of the guides 36 relative to the block 38. In addition, the motor member must rotate about the axis of the spindle 26 as explained above. This rotation is made possible by the cylindrical bearing surface between block 38 and spindle 26.

   The purpose of the cylindrical bearing surface between block 28 and spindle 26 is to provide the oscillatory rotation that spindle 26 describes about its own axis as the crank shaft rotates.

   There is no representation in FIG. 4 only one stabilizer 26, but in an alternate arrangement (not shown in the drawings) the sleeve 27 could form another similar pin extending upwardly in alignment with the pin 26. The additional pin would cooperate with guide surfaces similar to guides 30 or 36.

   Further, other stabilizers similar to pin 26 could be provided at suitable angles around the motor and those of them which have their axes in alignment could be rigidly connected together.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

   The form of constraint shown in fig. 4 forces the motor member to describe a symmetrical movement for the reasons already given with reference to FIGS. I and 3 and the fact that the stabilizer 26 oscillates around the center M with an amplitude equal to half the amplitude of oscillation of the main motor organ produces an important advantage which will be discussed overnight.

   In the variant shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, the crank shaft II carries a single crank 12 on which a motor member 21 is carried as before, the same reference numbers designating the same parts in FIGS. 4 and 8.

   Between the bearings 22 and 23 there is wedged on the crank pin 12 a sleeve 56 which is made in one piece with two circular cams 57 and 58. These cams have a common center line Mg which is inclined on the axis of the l MX crank shaft at an angle of II 1/4 while the main crank 12 has its MG axis tilted to MX at an angle of 22 1/2. The cams 57 and 58 constitute the equivalent of a second crank and are the counterpart of the crank 14 in FIG. 4.

   Between the cams 57 and 58 there is a third ball bearing 59 for the motor member 21 which is supported on it by means of a tubular arm spider 60.

   In this embodiment of the invention, the stabilizer 26 takes up, as shown in FIG. 9, the form of a caliper having curved arms 61 each of which forms a journal 62 engaged in a bearing 63 of the motor member 21.

  The axis of the journals 62 is placed at right angles to the main crank axis MG and at right angles to the axis of the stabilizer pin 26.

   Pin 26 also carries a pair of tabs 65,66 extending from each side of yoke 61. Each tab has a flat face at its top which, with the parts shown in the position of FIG. 8, is in a plane

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 perpendicular to the plane of the paper. The cleat 66 (see fig. 9) bears against the cam 58 and the cleat 65 against the cam 57.

   The end of the pin 26 is spherical to engage with a spherical support in a rectangular block
28 sliding between parallel vertical arched guides
30, as in fig. 4.

   As the crankshaft rotates, the cams 57, 58 oscillate the stabilizer 26 which is however retained by the guides 30 so that its axis is constantly in the vertical plane containing the axis of the crankshaft. velle. The motor member 21 is prevented from rotating around the axis EX relative to the stabilizer by the engagement of the journals 62 with the bearings 63. These journals however allow the spheres 24, 54 etc ... to oscillate around M with an amplitude twice as great as the oscillation of the axis of the stabilizer pin 26. The relative rotation required between the motor member 21 and the stabilizer about the axis of the stabilizer pin 26 is provided. by the relative movement which occurs between each stopper 65, 66 and its corresponding cam 57, 58.

   In other words, when the crankshaft turns, each cleat swings from side to side as shown in fig. 9, in addition to its upward and downward movement.

   Also in this construction, the GMP plane intersects the vertical plane containing MX along the line of the axis of the stabilizer pin 26. The mathematical considerations discussed in connection with Figs. I and 3 therefore apply to this case also and it is obvious that the motor member 21 therefore describes a symmetrical movement.

   Fig. 10 shows a variant of the arrangement described with reference to FIGS. 8 and 9. In this variant, the stabilizer pin 26 is connected by arms 61 to journals engaging with the motor member 21 as in FIGS. 8 and 9. However, the connection between pin 26 and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 crank formed by the two circular parts 57 and 58 is made via a yoke 67 which has bearing flanges 68 to surround the circular parts 57 and 58, and a bearing part 69 engaging with a journal 70 of spindle 26.

   It can be seen that the arrangement of FIG. IO works exactly the same as in figs. 8 and 9 except that the relative rotational movement between the motor member and the stabilizer around the axis of the stabilizer spindle is provided in bearings 69 and 70, the caliper 67 being forced to oscillate with the crank part 57.58.

   Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Figs. II and 12. In this construction, a crank pin 12 is mounted on a crank shaft, not shown, which rotates around its own axis MX. The ball bearing 71 is carried by the crank pin 12 but is mounted on a different axis Mg from the axis MG of the main crank. The tilt angle of MG relative to MX can be 22 1/2 and that of Mg on MX is half that angle. The stabilizer pin 26 is carried by the outer ring of the bearing 71 and its spherical end engages a rectangular block 28 slidable in one of the guides 30 similar to the guides 30 of FIG. 8.

   As can be seen in fig. 12, the stabilizer is T-shaped with pin 26 constituting the branch of the T.

  The two arms 72 and 73 extend on the side of the crank axis Mg and provide the connection between the stabilizer and the motor member.

   Each arm is bifurcated, the two parts of each arm being held together by a bolt 90. Each fork provides a guide for a square block 74, 75 sliding therein. Each of the blocks 74, 75 has a hole

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 cylindrical to receive a journal 76, 77 which is attached by a bracket 78, 79 to the motor member 21.

  The axis of the journals 76,77 is at right angles to the axis of the spindle 26 and at right angles to the axis of the crankpin MG.

   It can be seen that the bifurcated arms 72 and 73 retain, by the engagement with the journals 76,77, the motor member against any rotation about the axis MX relative to the stabilizer pin. However, the relative rotation required between the motor member and the stabilizer around the axis of the spindle 26 is provided by the sliding movement of the blocks 74, 75 around their respective guides. The sliding blocks and guides are therefore the equivalent of the bearing 67, 70 of FIG. 10.

   In the variant shown in FIGS. 13 and 14, a motor member 21 is carried on a crank 12 having its axis MG inclined at an appropriate angle with respect to the axis MX of the crank shaft. In this construction there is no second crank.

   The stabilizer is constituted by a T-shaped rod 80 whose arms 81 constitute journals which are received in bearings 62 carried by the motor member 21.

  The axis of the journals is perpendicular to the plane. paper in fig. 13 and in the plane of the paper in fig.I4 when the parts are in the position shown, i.e. when the axis MG of the crank pin is in the vertical plane containing the axis of the crank shaft.

   The stabilizer arm 80 passes downwardly through a sphere 83 which is mounted for universal movement in a block 84 which is capable of sliding in guides 85, the axis of the guides 85 being in the vertical plane containing the MX axis of the crank shaft.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

   The lower end of the branch 80 passes through another sphere 86 which is mounted in a similar fashion in a rectangular block 87 which can slide in guides 88 whose axis is placed vertically below that of the guides 85 and perpendicular to it. Therefore, in fig. 13, the sphere 83 can move from side to side, but its center remains in the plane of the paper, while in FIG. 14, the sphere 86 can move from side to side but its center remains in the plane of the paper.

   We can consider a radial line MP in which P is the imaginary point on the periphery of the motor member 21 which is the lowest of these points when the parts are in the position shown. This line oscillates, as seen in fig. 13, of each dimension of an average position, of an angle equal to the angle GMX. We can also consider the line Mp which is the line passing through the center of the sphere 83. According to the present invention, the parts are dimensioned such that the amplitude of the oscillation in the plane of FIG. 13 of the line Mp is equal to half the angle of oscillation of the line Mp.

   It can be seen that the plane containing the axis of the spindle 80 and the line Mp is the same as the plane GMP which was discussed in connection with FIG. I. This plane intersects the vertical plane containing the axis MX of the crank shaft. Following a line passing through M, and it is obvious that provided that the center of the sphere 83 is on this line, the motor member will be forced to describe a symmetrical movement.

     Any number of stabilizers 80 can be arranged around the motor; for example, as shown in fig. 14, there can be three stabilizers in all, arranged 120 apart.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   In all the examples described above, it can be seen that the symmetrical movement of the main motor member is obtained by maintaining a stabilizer in straight guides. This is an important simplification compared to the known arrangements in which curved guides have been used; this makes the parts less expensive to manufacture and eliminates the need for fine adjustment in the direction of the guides.

   The most important advantage, however, that the present invention provides is the smallness of the movement described by the stabilizer. When the stabilizer passes through an opening formed in the main motor member, this opening can be of smaller size than in known arrangements and the motor member can be made lighter for a given resistance.

   In the examples of the invention shown in FIGS.

  4 and 5, 8 and 9, in fig. 10, in fig. II and 12, the auxiliary crank on which the stabilizer is carried is arranged between the ends of the crank of the main engine organ; in some cases the main crank is made in two parts between which the auxiliary crank is arranged. But in a variant according to the present invention, the auxiliary crank can be arranged beyond the ends of the main crank so that the main motor member is located inside the stabilizer. In this case, a part of the main motor member is extended radially outwards for connection with the stabilizer.

   The invention can be applied to any apparatus for which an engine plate mechanism is required.
