 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Device for detecting currents due to insulation faults.

   The present invention relates to a device for detecting the currents due to insulation faults in high voltage networks, starting from the fact that any fault. isolation, even minimal and barely perceptible, causes a discharge which in turn emits high-frequency waves, which can be detected in a high-frequency receiver connected to the installations to be monitored or controlled.

   In accordance with the invention, the receiver is arranged such that it is coupled to the part of the installation to be tested and operating under normal conditions via a high frequency antenna; the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 receiver is tuned to a wave between 30 and 300 m. and acts on a thermionic voltmeter. Thanks to this arrangement, any influence of broadcast transmitters, which otherwise could be troublesome, is eliminated. On the other hand, we receive precisely the frequencies emitted by the currents due to the insulation fault. During the measurement, it is advantageous to ensure that the gate potential of the lamp located in the voltmeter circuit is adjusted so that the same initial conditions are obtained for all the measurements.

   It is thus possible to observe exactly the behavior of the different parts of the installation and to check them from time to time. If the conditions have not changed, the indicating device of the lamp receiver must show the same deviation for each test measurement.

   Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings shows the diagram of an apparatus according to the invention. Reference 1 designates a receiving frame which acts on the gate potential of a grid-screen lamp 2, the gate of which is connected in the usual way via a variable capacitor 3 to the cathode. 4. Screen grid 5 is connected to voltage battery 6 so that the grid has an appropriate positive voltage, of about 60 volts. The anode 7 of the lamp 2 is connected, via the primary winding 8 of a high frequency transformer, to the positive pole of the anode battery.

   The secondary winding 9 of this transformer, which together with the capacitor 10 mounted in parallel constitutes an oscillating circuit, is on the one hand connected by a reaction coil 11 and by a capacitor 12 to the anode 13 of a lamp. 14, and on the other hand, by a capacitor 15 to the grid 16 of the lamp 14. The grid 16 is moreover connected through a resistor 17 of high value to the cathode 18.

   The anode circuit of the lamp 14 is connected by an inductor 19 to the primary winding 20 of a transformer

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 at low frequency, then to the anode battery 6, at a point located around 50 volts. It goes without saying that the winding is shunted by a capacitor 21 to compensate for the high frequency currents.

   The secondary winding 22 of the low frequency transformer is connected to the grid 23 of a low frequency amplifier lamp 24, the anode 25 of which is connected, through the intermediary of the primary winding 26 of another transformer. at low frequency, to the positive pole of the anode battery. The secondary winding 27 of this transformer is connected to another amplifier lamp 28, the anode circuit of which contains the indicator instrument 29 consisting of a voltmeter or an ultra-sensitive ammeter. It goes without saying that the lamp 28 can be omitted, if the lamp 23 is used directly to power the indicator member 29.

   In order to be able to adjust the sensitivity of the indicator member 29, the latter is connected in series with a resistor 30 shunted by a capacitor 31.

   In order to obtain identical initial conditions for all the measurements, for example to bring the indicator 29 to its zero position, the gate of the lamp 28 located in the voltmeter circuit is connected to a potentiometer 32 crossed by the sum of all anode currents. To this end, this potentiometer, mounted in the connecting line of the anode battery 6 and of the heating battery 33 is shunted by a capacitor 34 of preferably high capacity in order to compensate for the high frequency currents.

   In order to be able also to use the apparatus for locating the sources of interference influencing the reception of radio broadcasts, the capacitors 3, 10 and 12 can be made variable. In this case, the low frequency circuit, that is to say the anode circuit of the lamp 24, comprises an earphone

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 telephone connected to two terminals 36 which are normally short-circuited.

   The line between frame 1 and the first lamp comprises a switch 37 which is open during the adjustment of the indicator member 29. This device also makes it possible to check whether the voltage of the batteries is still sufficiently high and sends an equal permanent current for all. the measurements in the indicating member, for a determined position of the compensation resistors. When the switch 37 is closed, it is then necessary for the indicator member to present the deviation observed during the last check carried out, if the isolation conditions have not changed.

   As insulation faults usually cause a tassel discharges, whereas glow discharges occur even in a perfectly clean installation, the indicator member 29 will be adjusted so that it does not deviate until the moment where there are egret discharges, or so that it leaves a previously occupied position; it is easy to satisfy this condition thanks to the compensation rheostat 30.

   However, comparable measurements are only obtained if, for all the measurements, the coupling conditions between the antenna and the apparatus to be tested on the one hand and between the antenna and the receiving apparatus on the other hand are the same; The first condition can be satisfied by providing a determined tight coupling, that is to say by bringing the frame into contact with the apparatus to be tested, or with a part communicating directly with this apparatus. Thus, for the test of insulators of a high voltage line, the frame will be placed in direct contact with the mast and in a position such that the plane of the frame is perpendicular to the direction of the line. A constant coupling of the antenna 1 and the receiving apparatus can be obtained by rigidly connecting the frame and the receiver.

   It is particularly advantageous to arrange the receiving apparatus within the space surrounded by the frame; it is in the interest of having the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 frame perpendicular to the ground by one of its diagonal faces to avoid there being too tight a coupling with the ground. To avoid this coupling, it is more advantageous to leave the point of the frame at least 3 cm from the surface of the ground. This result can be obtained by placing the frame and the receiver in a box, itself placed by a =. Of its edges, on a box intended to receive the batteries.

   Fig. 2 shows the exterior layout of an installation of this type. In this figure, the reference 40 designates the receiver box along the walls of which the frame is arranged and inside which the actual receiver device 41 is housed. The box 40 rests by its edge on a box 42. intended to receive the anode coil and the heating coil. The box 40 is connected by flexible conductors 43 to the box 42, the assembly being removable, thanks to a triangular notch in the box, to allow the box to be transported alone during the measurement.

   The monitoring device according to the invention can also be used for the regular monitoring of stations or parts of stations, if provision is made, according to a development of the invention, instead of the frame, for a connected coupling device. to the part of the installation to be monitored, this coupling device being, if necessary, connected to the monitoring device itself by means of a cable under screen, it is advantageous to install the device. permanent monitoring station at the control station. The coupling device may consist of a wire stretched longitudinally through the installation.

   Appropriate switches @ then allow the connection of several wire antennas, so that a single monitoring device can continuously monitor the isolation conditions of several parts of an installation.

   In open air installations, it may be advantageous to avoid the taut wire which can be put under high

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 voltage in the event of a drop in the line and can therefore become a source of danger, even if the insulation capacitors are interposed; it is therefore particularly advantageous, in particular, in the case of installations in the open air, to couple the monitoring device to the neutral line of an earthing reactor. Thanks to this arrangement, it will be possible to detect faults not only at the station itself, but also in neighboring parts.

   It is also possible to monitor the condition of cables coming from machines using the same device. In this case, an underground cable connected to the monitoring device 1 in the same way as the aforementioned antennas will be placed at a short distance from the cables coming from the machines.
