 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Arrangement of ionic valves with metal-league tank".

   It has already been proposed to surround the anode rods of ionic valves, especially those having metal vessels, by a sleeve of metal or other conductive material, which prevents the current of electrons from hitting the rod. by forcing this current to concentrate towards the anode

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 only. If the distance between this sleeve and the rod is effective a few millimeters, no discharge occurs between these parts, in a vacuum, even if the tension is quite great. For various reasons, no bearing pieces should be interposed between the rod and the sleeve, and as the latter is generally quite long, it is often difficult to hold it in the position concentric to the rod with a ri - sufficient gidity and precision.

   The present invention comprises a very simple solution to this problem in the case where the inlet insulator of the anode rod is composed, in a manner well known per se, of several alternating layers of metal and of insulating material adhering to it. to metal, for example enamel.

   Two exemplary embodiments of the invention, applied to an anode entering through the bottom and an anode entering through the cover of the vessel, are shown in section in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.

   The anode rod is, in Figure 1, composed of an outer part 1, to which one of the two end metal layers 20 of the insulator is attached, preferably by autogenous welding, and of a inner part 3 which is screwed to the outer part. The names "inside" and "outside" refer to the position relative to the evacuated tank. The insulator is formed, in a manner well known per se, of several conical metal parts 20-27 with intermediate enamel layers 28 which have been bonded to the molten metal or softened. The conical part 20 adjacent to the interior of the tank is welded to the outer part of the anode rod, while the cone 27, close to the atmosphere, is welded to the bottom 4 of the tank.

   According to the invention, one of the intermediate metal cones, preferably a cone situated fairly close to the cone

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 end 27 joined to the bottom of the vessel, like the cone 24 in the drawing, serves to support the protective sleeve 5 more closely surrounding the inner part 3 of the anode rod. In this way, the sleeve 5 is supported very rigidly, without needing to be pressed against the rod by means of intermediate pieces. Optionally, this sleeve can also serve as a supply conductor and as a support member of an anode grid 7. In this case, the cone 24 also carries an extension, outside the tank, to which a driver 30.

   Another cone 26 can, by way of example, support an outer sleeve 6 which protects the sleeve 5, especially if the latter is to serve as a supply conductor for a grid.

  In this case, the potential of the sleeve 5 differs so much from that of the surrounding space, more or less filled with ions, that such protection may become necessary.

   The vitreous material, melted between the metal cones 20 - 27, surrounds, as shown in the drawing, also the edges of these in the places where the latter do not extend to serve, in the manner indicated, as a support for the cones. other metal parts or to be welded to the bottom of the tank or to the anode rod.

   In Figure 2, only the inner part of the anode rod is shown. Its upper end is connected, in a fixed or detachable manner, to a metal cap 20 which extends into the upper metal cone of the insulator, and which can be contacted with an external feed conductor. Moreover, the parts of the insulator bear the same indicator figures as in figure 1.

  One of the metal layers serves as a support for the metal sleeve 5 protecting the anode rod. This sleeve is not subjected to any tension and therefore does not need a lead conductor or an external sleeve for its protection. He can',

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in this case, serve as a support for the anode sleeve 9. The cover of the apparatus, to which one of the end cones 27 of the isolator is tightly connected, bears the number 8 .
