<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

EMI1.1
Feedback signal for dep8 \ ign oxygen breathing apparatus.
The present invention relates to a protective breathing apparatus, oxygen, provided with a bottle containing a supply of this gas. In devices of this type, it happens that the pressure of the oxygen in the aforementioned bottle drops below the permissible measurement without the user of the device realizing it. This involves a danger for the user because he no longer has at his disposal a sufficient quantity of oxygen for the return from the zone filled with noxious gases. It has been proposed to fit behind the pressure relief valve of the oxygen cylinder, a device
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Acoustic signaling device controlled by the energy of the current of oxygen leaving the expansion valve.
In the case of this signaling device, it is important that the springs of the valve intended to control the flow of oxygen are very carefully adjusted. This adjustment is very difficult and can be easily disturbed when cleaning the device.
An apparatus is also known in which there is provided, in the current circuit used for respiration, a closing valve controlled either by the pressure of the oxygen contained in the bottle, or by a member which causes the opening of the cylinder. the valve of this bottle. As long as the valve of the bottle of this device is closed, breathing cannot occur through the duct reserved for this device.We can also, in this device, fit in the organ closing this duct, a whistle which is made hear when the duct is closed and the user tries to breathe. This provision simply indicates to the user that he forgot to open the bottle.
However, it cannot be used to indicate to the user that the oxygen contained in the cylinder has been consumed to the point that the return path must be undertaken.
A warning device for oxygen protective breathing apparatus is also known in which the expansion valve for normal operation is preceded by a second expansion valve. By the latter, the oxygen pressure is first reduced to a value greater than that of the pressure in normal operation. The expansion valve thus interposed has a second outlet channel which, normally, can be kept closed by a shut-off valve. When the pressure in the cylinder drops, this shut-off valve opens due to the simultaneous lowering of the pressure in the body of the expansion valve, and the flow of oxygen passes into the pocket through the second opening and makes hear a whistle.
This device also requires, next to the signaling device, a special pressure relief valve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ciale which weighs down the apparatus and is consequently expensive.
In addition, mounting the two expansion valves on top of each other is difficult.
The present invention resides in that, between the outlet nozzle of oxygen to the breathing bag and a signaling device, for example a whistle, there is a plate or surface having notches and controlled by an elastic tube connected to the tube to high pressure, plate which, when the pressure in the tank is sufficient, disperses the oxygen which comes out and only allows the jet of oxygen to pass at certain pressures through these openings towards the signaling device. It is possible to provide an adjustment device, operated from the outside, which makes it possible to sound the signal when the tank has been emptied up to a determined measurement.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example in FIG. 1, an embodiment of the invention. In this figure, 1 denotes the high pressure piping which is connected to the tank and 2 the expansion valve which allows the expanded gas to pass into compartment 3 at low pressure. To this low pressure compartment 3 can be connected the automatic valve 4, actuated by the lungs of the user and the nozzle 5 which serves to supply a uniform flow of oxygen. The uniform flow of oxygen and the additional quantity of oxygen. oxygen controlled by the automatic valve actuated by the user's lungs open into the breathing bag 6, which is connected in an appropriate manner to the tubing 7.
A pipe 8 is connected to the high-pressure piping I, which opens out into an elastic tube 9 such as those which are used, for example, in manometers. The end of the elastic tube is connected by an articulation 10 to a lever II, to one of the arms of which is fixed a plate 12. This plate 12 has notches 13. Above the nozzle 5 is arranged a whistle 14 .
When the pressure is high enough in the re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Servoir, the elastic tu be 9 straightens up. In this position of the elastic tube, the nozzle 5 blows towards the plate 12.
The oxygen coming out of the nozzle is dispersed and cannot reach the whistle. When the pressure drops below a certain value in the tank, the plate 12 rotates further under the influence of the elastic tube 9 which contracts and there then comes a moment when a notch is present above the nozzle. 5. The jet of oxygen coming out of the nozzle can then enter through this notch in the whistle and make it emit a sound. It is obvious that several notches can be provided so that the alarm signal is heard, not only shortly before the end of the state in which the apparatus can be used, but already before that moment. The notches can have various widths at will so that the alarm signal is emitted for a longer or shorter time.
Instead of a whistle, another signaling instrument can also be used; can for example bend, by means of the oxygen jet, a thin strip of electrically conductive metal which activates an electrical contact and controls an optical or acoustic signal, etc.
When the signal is given, the user knows he must make the return journey. It is desirable, however, that, depending on the length of this return path, the signal will be heard as the oxygen tank is emptied to varying degrees. For this purpose, an adjustment device can be provided which is to be operated from the outside and which enables the signaling device to be activated in different states of filling of the container. In fig. 2, an embodiment of this device has been shown. This figure shows the inside of the tubing 7 shown in fig.I.
For greater clarity, the automatic valve 4 actuated by the user's lungs has been omitted. The end of the elastic tube 9 is connected by a link 15 to the lever II which carries the plate 12. The point of rotation of the lever is located
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
on a part 16 which can rotate around the nozzle 5, which is pushed by a spring-17 and which can be adjusted by means of a screw 18 with external operation. The drawing shows the device in a position where the elastic tube is stretched under the effect of the pressure of the gas in the reservoir.
The signaling device can also be placed in front of the outlet nozzle of the automatic valve actuated by the user's lungs. As in the devices? respiratory protection, the return signal or alarm signal can also be used in breathing apparatus for high altitudes, in apparatus for artificial respiration and in other technical apparatus which work with gas under pressure.
