 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 combustible.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  It PROCESS FOR SUPPLYING TORCH AND TORCH
FOR THE CARRYING OUT OF THIS PROCESS ".

  The present invention relates to a method of supplying a torch for cutting metals by oxidation of the latter by means of a jet of oxygen surrounded by an igniting combustible mixture located at a relatively low pressure compared to the pressure of the constituents of this mixture in the generators which contain them.

   With known torches, the pressure of the combustible mixture at the outlet of the torch, although being appreciably lower than the pressure in the generators of the constituents of this mixture, is however still sufficient for the combustible mixture to be projected out. torch at high speed, regardless of the entrainment it might undergo by the central jet of oxygen.

   This mode of supply has the drawback of giving rise to a large heating flame and to a strong development of this flame on the part to be cut. As a result, a fairly large strip of this room is unnecessarily heated.

   The main object of the present invention is to reduce the consumption of combustible mixture by locating the heating zone in the immediate vicinity of the central oxygen jet.

   To this end, according to the invention, the pressure is reduced

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of the combustible gas mixture at the outlet of the torch to a value such that the speed of the mixture is only slightly greater than the speed of propagation of the combustion in the mixture.

   As a result of the low pressure of the combustible mixture at its exit from the torch, the exit speed of this mixture is much lower than that of the oxygen jet and the igniting combustible mixture is entrained by the central oxygen jet whose speed is much greater. It will be appreciated that this driving mode has the effect of maintaining a small cross section in the heating flame.

   It should be noted that in order to reduce this cross section as much as possible, it is advantageous to reduce the outlet pressure of the fuel mixture as much as possible, but that in practice it is limited in this sense by the fact that the speed of the mixture at the outlet of the torch must be slightly greater than the rate of propagation of combustion in the mixture.
 EMI2.1
 & 1 <-? 68 <SSB 4 fae t! BtM !!
To obtain a suitable pressure of the combustible mixture at the outlet of the torch, it suffices, in principle, to cause a sufficient pressure drop between the generators and the outlet of the torch. But, in practice, it is advantageous to create this pressure drop in the torch and, preferably, in the nozzle thereof.

   The location of the load part in this location protects the power supply from additional significant additional load losses which could occur between the generators and the torch in the event that it is desired to reduce the pressure of the fuel mixture to the desired value from the vicinity of the generators.

 combustible.

   These devices are advantageously designed so as to cause vigorous stirring of the fuel mixture at the same time as they create the desired pressure drop.

   In particular, these devices can be made in such a way as to present sudden variations in section as well as the path of the combustible mixture. in the direction of the increase in section than in the direction of the decrease in section.

   Given that a torch according to the invention operates under conditions such that the speed of the combustible mixture at the outlet is close to the speed of propagation of the combustion in the mixture, it is very advantageous for this torch to include means preventing the propagation of the explosive wave towards the interior of the torch, - in the event that the speed of the gases at the outlet decreases as a result of the conditions of use of the torch, for example, as a result of the tion of the torch nozzle very close to the workpiece.

 and which represent schematically, and by way of example only, two embodiments of the nozzle of a torch according to the invention.
 EMI4.1

  Za Figure 1 is a diametrical section through the bee, half of the cutting nozzle being shown in view.

   Figure 2 is a view in the direction of the arrow X of the spout according to Figure 1.

   Figures 3, 4 and 5 are cross sections taken along lines III-III, IV-IV, and V-V of figure 1.

   FIG. 6 represents, in a manner similar to FIG. 1, the nozzle of another torch according to the invention.

   In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.

   The nozzle shown in Figures to 5 comprises a cutting nozzle 1 whose end is frustoconical. This cutting nozzle is surrounded by a heating nozzle 8 which can, for example, be screwed at 8a on the torch proper.

  The nozzle 1 is for example engaged with gentle friction in the nozzle 8. The aforementioned frustoconical end is separated from the also tapered end of the heating nozzle 8 by an annular channel 9.

   The cutting nozzle 1 is constituted by a plate 4 provided with grooves 6, by a portion 3 of reduced section forming around it an expansion chamber 5 contiguous to said plate, by a cylindrical part 14 in which are formed ca - ends 2 of small cross section and by the aforementioned truncated end into which the channels 2 open. The section of the annular channel 9 at the point where the channels 2 open there ewt approximately equal to the total section of these channels.

  This annular channel 9 widens slightly outward. It ends in a divergent cavity 10 with which the end of the heating nozzle 8 is provided.

   The oxygen jet used to cut the metal comes out of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 duct 7 formed in the axis of the cutting nozzle 1. This duct is connected, for example, by a pipe 16 to an oxygen cylinder. The pressure of the oxygen at the outlet of the duct 7 is approximately equal to the pressure at the outlet of this tank because there is hardly any pressure drop on the path followed by the oxygen from the tank. . On the other hand, the pressure of the combustible mixture consisting for example of oxygen and acetylene is, at the outlet of the anhular channel 9, much lower than that of the constituents of this mixture (therefore oxygen and acetylene in the case considered) at the outlet of the cylinders which deliver them.

   This is due to the significant pressure drops which occur during each sudden variation in the section offered to the passage of this mixture.

   The importance of these pressure drops must obviously vary as a function of the pressure at the outlet of the generators. The pressure of the mixture at the outlet of the torch nozzle must also take into account the outlet section since the outlet speed for a given pressure is inversely proportional to the outlet section.

   In Figure 6, there is shown the nozzle of another torch in which the annular channel 9 is limited by walls 11 and 12 which remain at an equal distance from each other over the entire length.
 EMI5.1
 length of this card. This is connected to another annular channel 15 also formed between the heating nozzle 8 and an extension 13 of the end of the cutting nozzle. This channel 15 is gradually widening outwards, for example, by the fact that the lateral surface of the extension 13 is that of a truncated cone, the apex of which is towards the outside while the surface of the heating nozzle 8 facing delce extension is cylindrical.

   Tests carried out with a torch according to the invention have shown that the gas consumption is lower than that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 known torches and that the cutting width is also less. On the other hand, the cutting speed is greater than that obtained by known torches.

   It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the layout and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization without going beyond the scope. of this patent. Thus, for example, it goes without saying that it is not essential that the channels 2 have the section shown in FIG. 3 and be rectilinear. It is also evident that it is not essential that these channels be formed in the cylindrical part.
