<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Process for obtaining coatings by means of hydrocarbon binders",
In a Patent Application filed on the same day, for 'Hydrocarbon binders and their manufacturing process ", the Applicant has described a process making it possible to produce, for the most diverse applications, hydrocarbon binders containing in their mass, in the form of regular dispersions, very fine water droplets as well as mineral "sands", the latter term being taken in all its generality from the point of view of the size of the elements and their particle size: fillers, fine sands, sands
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
* all coming ", small gravel, etc.
The binders according to the invention are, in fact, constituted by “reverse” emulsions, in which the water is dispersed in the hydrocarbon phase, the latter also containing, in suspension, the aforementioned mineral materials.
It was specified, in the aforementioned patent, that it was possible to introduce into the mixtures according to the invention, during their manufacture or after that: here, any accessory substances making it possible to achieve a determined effect and to give the product obtained special qualities. For example, if we want to increase the quantity of water dispersed in the hydrocarbon mass, which makes it possible to reduce the cost price of the binder as well as its dosage per unit of surface or volume, the said binder is added to 'a small amount of soaps, alkalis or other emulsifying materials, - it being specified here that instead of these emulsifying materials, their constituents can be used by adding them together or separately to the product according to the invention, during its manufacture, or after this.
Experience has shown the Applicant that the products according to the invention, the practical results of which have proved to be remarkable when it is desired to produce thick coatings (that is to say, the dosage per square meter of which exceeds 1 kg : of fixed materials) made it difficult to produce thinner coatings, due to the generally fairly high viscosity of inverse emulsions
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
(of the "water in oil" type).
The object of the present invention is to protect an improvement of the invention according to the aforementioned patent, an improvement which makes it possible now to produce, with the processes and products according to said patent, flat or non-flat coatings (in the case of 'coatings and agglomerations of materials as minimal as desired) by combining the action of heat and the partial or total replacement of small quantities of soaps, alkalis or other emulsifying materials allowing, according to the aforementioned patent to increase the quantities of water dispensed into the hydrocarbon mass, by mineral or organic, alkaline, alkaline earth, magnesian bases or salts,
zinc and alumina used alone or in a mixture with each other or with other substances; instead of the aforementioned compounds, their constituents can be added, simultaneously or successively, to the products according to the aforementioned patent, during their manufacture or after the latter.
The Applicant has, in fact, observed the following surprising phenomenon: the mixtures according to the invention described in the aforementioned patent, corrected as has just been said, are transformed spontaneously, for a given temperature rise which is always the even for a given system, in an aqueous emulsion or suspension of the current type, i.e. in which water is the dispersing phase, and which consequently has a very low viscosity: Thus, the implementation of the products according to the invention

at a temperature above the aforementioned inversion temperature will make it possible to produce coatings. elements as thin as desired, by any process, and in particular by spraying.
On cooling, the reverse phenomenon occurring, a real "reverse emulsion sponge" will form on the surface thus coated which, under the influence of low compression, with or without grit or sandblasting, will lose almost all of the material. its water: the departure of this, which immediately flows in a completely unexpected and surprising way, provides a coating immediately stabilized in its final form, the aqueous liquid thus released having entrained all of the elements contained in the mixture which are soluble in water; furthermore said coating will be perfectly adherent to the underlying surface.
By way of numerical example, given by way of indication and without limitation, the Applicant discloses that it has produced systems according to the present invention, by incorporating, with stirring, 1% oleate or resinate of lime, magnesia, d alumina or zinc, to a mixture, prepared according to the aforementioned patent, of 100 parts of filler 110 to 150 parts of a mixture of tar and bitumen, 140 parts of water and one part of caustic soda.
The system obtained, perfectly homogeneous and continuous when cold (inverse emulsion of the "water in oil" type) transforms at 50 into an ordinary suspension ("oil in water" type) very fluid and usable at this.

temperature, like an ordinary bitumen emulsion,
If the said system is used for the realization of a road surface, a chipping and a slight rolling of the coating thus obtained, immediately after its spreading, will lead to an immediate elimination of the water, which will run off easily.
EMI5.1
It was quite a surprising lesson on the risks of. the roadway, together with the resulting coating will be:
immediately and perfectly adherent to the underlying 'Bous:' pavement, even in cold weather and - if it is wet; it was noted that a torrential rain, occurring during the work or

also soon after its addition, has no effect on the coating thus formed
The filler used can be made up of any fine mineral element, used alone or as a mixture: limestone, cement, shale powder. or 'slate, coal, dust from quarries, various slag and ash, natural asphalts, etc.).
As for the magnesium, aluminous, zincic calcium compounds or the mixture of these salts used, they can be used either in the form of a more or less fine powder, diluted or undiluted in an inert excipient, or in the form of solution in a hydrocarbon (tar, bitumen), or still in the form of theirs. constituents introduced together or separately into the mixture during manufacture or after completion of cella: ci, said introduction possibly being made for example in the form of a solution or a suspension in water or in a hydrocarbon liquid:
