  DISPOSITIFS   ELECTROMAGNETIQUES

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Les figures 1, 2 et 3 montrent respectivement une vue en plan de la partie supérieure, une vue en plan de la partie inférieure et une vue latérale en élévation d'un relais conforme à l'invention, la figure 3 montrant particulièrement la position de l'armature quand le relais est dans une condition de repos avant d'être exoité;
La figure 4 est semblable à la figure 3, excepté que l'armature est montrée sur cette figure dans la position de rétablissement qui suit l'excitation;
Les figures 5 et 6 montrent respectivement le résultat d'études osoillographiques sur un relais à armature articulée, et sur un relais dont l'armature est suspendue conformément aux principes de la présente invention ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

     Cependant avec l'arrangement décrit, bien que l'énergie acquise par l'armature doit encore être dissipée par un mouvement oscillatoire, l'effet perturbateur sur les contacts est considérablement diminué puisque la quantité d'énergie, qui doit être dissipée à l'extrémité de tra - vail de l'armature, est beaucoup plus faible par suite de la suspen--

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

  ELECTROMAGNETIC DEVICES
The invention relates to electromagnetic relays.

  In electrical systems in general and in telephone systems in particular, the electromagnetic relay plays an important role and is one of the most widely used switching devices.

  To ensure satisfactory operation of the circuits of a telephone system, and to guarantee service against any interruptions, it is necessary that the relays employed operate with maximum efficiency at all times, and that they be constructed of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 so as to attract their armature and release it without clicking or vibrating between the contacts. These conditions frequently result from too much armor applioation against the pole face of the core when the relay is energized, and armature bouncing off the stopper when the relay is neutralized or released.

   We know that the tension on the reinforcement is a minimum when it is in its rest position and that the air gap between the core and the reinforcement is maximum, The tension increases rapidly as the reinforcement moves towards the nucleus and the size of the air gap decreases. The result is that the armature makes contact with the corre- sponding core with a considerable force since this is maximum at the moment of contact. Under these conditions the contact springs, which are closed as a result of the operation of the armature, are subjected to a considerable knocking due to the rebound of the armature during the period during which the force acquired by this armature during its travel dissipates. from its resting position to its working position.

   On the other hand, and particularly with certain relays with armature controlled by springs, this armature having a considerable speed of recovery which is communicated to it by said springs, acquires a quantity of force which must be dissipated before it remains at rest. . When the mass of the armature is considerable, and it is articulated behind the core, this energy is dissipated during the rebound of the armature on its working contact, which rebound is transmitted to the springs of contact, such that these are closed and opened in a faulty manner until the amplitude of the rebounds of the armature is reduced to such an extent that it does not affect these contacts any longer.

   These conditions make it difficult to establish, by means of the contacts of a relay, fast-acting circuits since there may be a relatively long period after operation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 -nning or re-establishment of this relay, before the closing or opening of these contacts is final.

   One of the aims of the invention is to provide electromagnetic relays in which the contact clicking condition, both for operation and for the re-establishment of the armature, is considerably reduced. The main fact of the invention relates to an electromagnetic relay characterized by an armature supported in a pivoting manner by one or more members controlling the contact springs.

   The invention is best understood from the following description based on the accompanying drawings. On these:
Figures 1, 2 and 3 show respectively a plan view of the upper part, a plan view of the lower part and a side elevational view of a relay according to the invention, Figure 3 showing particularly the position of the armature when the relay is in a quiescent condition before being energized;
Figure 4 is similar to Figure 3, except that the armature is shown in this figure in the recovery position following the excitation;
Figures 5 and 6 show respectively the result of osoillographic studies on a relay with articulated armature, and on a relay whose armature is suspended in accordance with the principles of the present invention;

Figure 7 shows sohematically the principle on which the ivention is based.

   The core 10 of the relay is almost cylindrical over its entire length, and on an intermediate part of this core is the coil 11. The front part of the core 10, or the part immediately below the transverse plate 23 of the armature , is flattened so as to provide a pole face of a suitable surface. The frame stopper used in this construction includes an L-shaped rod 24 having one end extending beyond.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 beyond the front end of the core 10, while the other part extends at right angles to aveo oelle-oi, and is threaded to receive a nut 25. The front edge of the frame 18 is slightly concave to allow to the rod 24 to pass through this frame and to provide the necessary bearing surface for the nut.

  The type of construction adopted allows the front edges of core 10 and frame 18 to be substantially aligned so as to reduce the loss paths which are common to arrangements heretofore used or the cores extend beyond. from the front edge of the frame to provide mounting clearance for the stopper. In addition, this arrangement reduces the loss flux to a minimum, and allows virtually the entire flux of the core to pass through the air gap of the armature, and therefore to be used to produce the tension. The front end of the core 10 can be threaded to allow the insertion of the rod 24, which can then be held in position, by pins placed through the holes 9, as shown in figure 2.

   An L-shaped support, comprising the arms 16 and 17, is welded to the rear part of the core 10. Part 17, as can be seen in Figures 3 and 4, serves to mount the relay on a frame. , and part 16, extending over the entire width of the relay, constitutes a support for the spring assemblies 26 placed on each side of the relay and fixed to part 16 by means of screws 14 and 15.

   On the other face of the part 16 is fixed, also by means of the screws 14 and 15, a U-shaped support 12 for the frame, and connecting or terminal pins 27. The support 12 has two arms, s 'étenhnt parallel to the longitudinal axis of the core 10, provided with openings 1 and 2 at the ends, these openings being placed on a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the core. Their purpose is to receive cylindrical projections 13 which protrude from the arms of the frame, as will be explained below. Longitudinal adjustment of the frame support can be done down

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 -tighten screws 14 and 15, moving support 16 forwards or backwards according to the reoherohé adjustment, then tightening screws 14 and 15.

   The support 16 is provided with holes of elongated shape to allow its displacement without requiring the removal of the spring assemblies, or without causing other disturbances to the relay assembly.

   The winding connection pins may be provided with extensions extending to the front of the relay, and arranged to receive contact arms on a test apparatus or tool applied to the relays in the face of the panel or frame.

   The spring assemblies include the ordinary contact combinations. The fixed spring, such as 8 for example, is relatively thick, and may carry one or more contact elements, not shown, preferably arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the springs. A lateral projection 7 comes to rest against a projection such as 6 provided on the front cheek 5 of the reel, which is provided in addition with spaced projections, not shown, for other fixed oontaots which are normally applied under tension against the said projections of the cheeks of the reel.

  The corresponding movable spring, such as 4, is practically small and carries the desired number of contact points arranged in correspondence with the contact elements applied to the fixed spring. The different springs, in the assemblies provided on either side of the relay, are separated from each other by insulating spaces, such as 3, which extend forward from the support 16 along the springs, so to apply greater rigidity to these springs and. also a natural period of vibration shorter than that of the armature 18.

   When the sets of springs contain non-actuated contacts, such as for example the springs 8 and 4, a balancing spring 19 is interposed on each side of the relay between the armature 18 and the innermost spring of each set, This balancing spring acts via the stop 20 which is inserted into the frame and which presses against the balancing spring

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 at the tip thereof to subject the armature to a tension which applies it against the stop nut 25, thereby avoiding the vibration movement of the armature which would tend to separate the spring 4 from the spring 8. D Other contact stops, such as 20, extend between the movable springs and pass through the stationary springs so that armature movement is transmitted through these stops to the movable springs.

   The frame 18, which has a U-shape, has at the central part of its transverse branhe 23 a projection ending in an oonoave shape to allow, when the frame is in position, to move along the rod 24 This projection has a lightness slightly greater than that of the polar range of nucleus 10.

  The arms of the frame are practically rectangular and extend from the transverse arm 23 towards the rear cheek 21 of the coil. On each arm, and at a certain distance from the end, there is a cylindrical pin 13, only one of which is shown in FIG. 3, this pin being adapted to pass through the hole 2 of the corresponding arm 12 of the support of the frame. It is obvious that a similar pin 13 is provided on the other arm of the frame and passes through the hole 1 of the corresponding arm 12 of the support 16.

   Although in the embodiment shown in the drawings the pins have been shown as fixed to the arms of the frame while the holes through which these pins must pass are provided on the arms of the support, it is evident that this order can be reversed and that said pins can be fixed on the arms of the support while the holes would be on the arms of the frame.

   When the frame is in place on the core, it is freely suspended by its pins 13 passing through the holes 1 and 2, and can rotate freely around a virtual axis which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the core. This movement can be effeo-

 -Kill, at one end, in the arc limited by the adjusting nut 25, and at the other end in the space between the lower surface of the arms of the frame support and the upper surface of the springs balancers 19, or else, if no balancing spring is provided, between this same lower surface of the arms of the frame support and the upper surfaces of the first insulating plates of the spring assemblies, such as for example the plates 22.

  The frame can, in addition, perform an angular movement around its front end as a fulcrum, this end being held fixed against the surface of the nut. 25 by the sets of springs exerting their pressure against the frame through the series of stops 20. This movement allows the projections 13 to slide into the openings 1 and 2 and to exit from these openings.

   Having thus described the elements of the relay, which are necessary for an understanding of the invention, and the manner in which they are assembled to constitute the preferred embodiment of said relay, the effect due to the free suspension of the armature by eliminating contact vibrations or rattles in the operation and in the reinstatement of the armature, is now exposed.

   Considering Figures 3, 4 and 7, the first of these shows the position of the armature when the relay is in a non-operating condition. The front end of the frame remains below the lower surface of the nut 25, this frame being held firmly in this position by the downward pressure exerted by the spring assemblies and transmitted to each arm of the frame. by the stops 20.

   As these contact stops are placed towards the front part of the frame, but behind the points of contact of the various springs, this frame occupies a non-linear position downwards with its two pins 13 partially in the holes 1 and 2, while its rear end may or may not be on the surface of the balancing spring 19 or of the separator

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 22, depending on the amount of tension with which the springs exert their pressure against the frame at the front end.

   When the relay is energized by actuating the coil 11, the magnetic flux produced in the core extends through the arms of the support 12, provided that this support is magnetically connected to the core 10 by the support 16 to which the core is. welded. It follows that the core exerts an attractive force in two places, the first at the polar face and the second at the two arms of the frame support.

   This double force is exerted on the two ends of the armature 18 which, by this means, acquires an anti-clockwise rotation movement around its pins 13, which brings the face of the frame to come into contact with the pole pole of the core, and the arms of the frame, extending beyond the suspension points, contact the undersides of the arms of the support.

   The armature by moving into its operating position ao- quires a certain amount of energy which, of course, must be dissipated before the armature is brought into its resting position. If the frame were articulated to the support 16 by the ends of its arms, which is the ordinary mode of attachment, this energy would be dissipated by the oscillation movement of the frame around this joint, and since this would produce the most large amount of displacement of the armature at its working end where contact is made, this oscillation would cause the contacts to be opened and closed incorrectly in varying degrees until the amplitude of the oscillations, communicated to the springs, is no longer sufficient to close and open the contacts.

     However with the arrangement described, although the energy acquired by the armature must still be dissipated by an oscillatory movement, the disturbing effect on the contacts is considerably diminished since the amount of energy, which must be dissipated at the working end of the reinforcement, is much weaker as a result of the suspension.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 -intermediate section which allows part of this energy to be dissipated at the rear of the frame. The angle of movement is thus reduced because of this mode of suspension, and the magnetizing force which tends to hold the arms of the frame on the arms of the support, further reduces the angle of movement when the frame is rocking.

   As a result, the movement of the armature at its working end takes place through a small arc which is insufficient to strongly influence the oontaots carried by the springs, thus reducing the time interval required after the operation of the l. 'armature so that the contacts are closed.

   When the coil 11 is de-energized, the armature falls back against the nut 25, as shown in figure 4, by virtue of the force exerted against it by the sets of springs under tension, opposite each of its arms. As in the case of operation, when restoring the armature aoquiert a certain energy by returning to its normal position, this energy to be dissipated before the armature occupies its rest position.

   If the armature were articulated at the end of its arms to the support 16, this energy would be dissipated by an osoillatory movement of the armature, which would be greatest at the front end, and this energy, if the amplitude were large enough, would be transmitted to the contact springs through the stops 20, which would cause a break in the rest contacts and an opening of the circuits established through these oontacts. The value of these clicks of oontaot, in some cases, and their duration, are shown by Figures 5A and 5B which are reproductions of two osoillographic studies made on relays provided with large spring assemblies with their respective armatures articulated to the back.

   The top two lines in each Figure 5A and 5B represent the current conditions through the two separate pairs of normally closed contacts on the relays, while the bottom line represents the current through the respective coils of the relays. It is evident from an inspeotion of these two figures that although each pair of contacts closes for a short time

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 after the current in the winding reaches the value 0, there is no assured contact closure until a considerable time has elapsed, not allowing circuits to be established through these contacts of a certain that at a time aseez far from that for which the current through the coil was interrupted.

   With the described method of suspension of the reinforcement, the rebound effect during the reestablishment of this reinforcement is practically eliminated. Considering Figure 4, which shows the position of the armature as its front end hits the nut 25, the armature has acquired during this restoring movement a quantity of energy which must be dissipated before 'it does not take its rest position against this nut. If, as said above, the armature were articulated at the rear, the energy would be dissipated by the oscillatory movement of its front end, with a transmission of this movement to the springs.

   But, as long as the frame is freely suspended by the pins 13, and since the spring assemblies exert pressure to hold the front end of the frame against the nut 25, this frame is free to move angularly in it. the opposite direction to which it would be actuated if it were articulated at the rear. In this way the movement which will take place to dissipate the acquired energy, will be the one which would take place if the armature was articulated to the nut 25 rather than at the end of its arms.

   Since the suspension points 13 can slide in the holes 1 and 2, the energy is dissipated by oscillatory twists of the armature as a whole, its amplitude of oscillation being the greatest naturally in its arms, and practically zero at the point where it makes contact with the stops 20, as can be seen in Figure 7. In this way the rebound effect of the armature on the contacts is practically canceled since the only rebound movement which can now be communicated to the spring sets is the movement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 unappearable that takes place at the head of the relay, which causes a closure on the oontaots almost immediately usable after these said contacts are closed.

   FIGS. 6A and 6B show the improvement made to the action of the contacts, which results from the mode of suspension deorit. These two figures represent osoillographic studies made on relays equipped with the same spring assemblies as the relays whose contact action is shown by the graphs of figures 5A and 5B, but with freely suspended armatures, as described above. . It should be observed that for the relays which give the results shown in figure 6A, as well as for those which give the results shown in figure 6B, the closing of the contacts takes place in a very small interval, after the current in the coil becomes zero, and the value of the knock, which occurs before this moment, is practically zero,
