"PROCEDE D'ETIRAGE DU VERRE EN TABLE OU EN FEUILLE. CONTINUE"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"PROCESS FOR STRETCHING GLASS INTO TABLE OR SHEET. CONTINUOUS"
In the drawing processes in which a continuous strip of glass is stretched vertically from the so-called flow-through or stretching glass bath, through a nozzle / in the Fourcault process for example, the drawing chamber is, as we know, established in such a way that the float-stretcher, which is inserted into the. mass of glass, occupies in the glass bath of the drawing chamber an open position on all sides, so that the drawing slot can receive glass coming from. all directions. This known embodiment is shown in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1.
The diagram of FIG. 1 also makes it possible to realize the shape of the currents of the glass, in particular those which are important for the formation of the root of the glass leaf and which, consequently, determine the nature of the latter.
The glass which forms the root of the ribbon of glass comes from the different layers of the current which circulate in the drawing basin, and which differ considerably from the point of view of the temperature.
However, a much more important drawback, as regards the thermal homogeneity of the mass of glass constituting the root of the glass table, arises from the fact that the outer layers of the glass sheet are formed by layers of the glass. streams which are subjected to particularly intense cooling on their path in the gap between the stretching machine and the bridge or between the drawing machine and the cooling posterior wall of the drawing chamber. This is mainly present on the surface of the glass contained in the drawing chamber.
As a result of the intense cooling which occurs at the sides of the stretching chamber, it forms very rapidly during stretching at the places designated by 1 and 2 in FIG. 1, a solidified glass crust which reaches a thickness of 1 to 2 cms. approximately, after which it stops growing.
A state of equilibrium is therefore immediately established with regard to the flow of heat through this solidified glass crust, and which is expressed by the fact that the glass which circulates in intervals 3 and 4 brings to this crust exactly the same quantity of heat as that which is evacuated from said crust by the air which circulates in the drawing chamber. This necessarily implies a significant drop in the temperature of the glass which circulates in intervals 3 and 4, FIG. l which is determined by the temperature of the layer
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
solid glass / liquid glass demarcation. This temperature is around 700 degrees C.
The outermost layers of the circulating glass are allowed to cool down to this last temperature, in order then to absorb, on their way to the entrance of the drawing machine, a new quantity of heat from the other layers of the glass. glass. However, given the relatively rapid movement of the layers of the glass, the temperatures of the different layers of the glass cannot equilibrate to such an extent that the entire mass of glass, which constitutes the root of the glass table can be considered to be fairly homogeneous from a thermal point of view.
As is known, an inherent characteristic of glass drawing processes is that temperature differences and the resulting differences in viscosity of the various layers subjected to drawing and forming the root. of the strip of glass, are reflected in the latter by lines, called "waves", which extend in the direction of stretching and which, in the event of :: oblique vision through the stretched-glass, give result in a distorted image.
An attempt has been made to remedy this drawback by giving the drawing nozzles the most diverse shapes, for example by providing an arrangement by which it is sought to take the glass from a single determined layer of the glass circulating in the oven. basin ... '* However, in all the solutions proposed, no account has been taken of the fact that the uneven cooling of the drawing glass mass, in the drawing chamber itself, before the 'arrival of the glass up to the drawing nozzle is much more detrimental to the thermal homogeneity of the mass of glass to be drawn, than the fact of drawing the glass from different circulation planes which is present in the drawing basin.
Therefore,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
all the means which aim at forming the root of the glass table starting from a thermally homogeneous mass of glass must inevitably have no effect, if their application does not make it possible to avoid intense cooling, in the chamber of drawing, different layers of the glass mass entering the drawing nozzle.
The installation which is the subject of the present invention eliminates the drawbacks which remain in the stretching float-stretching processes known hitherto, thanks to the fact that the drawing basin is established in such a way that, in the working position of the drawing nozzle arranged in this basin with free vertical movement in both directions, at the bottom the lateral face of this nozzle is applied / in sealed contact against the inner surface of the drawing basin, from such that the glass coming from the communication channel coming from the melting furnace can, in the main order, only follow the direct path towards the entrance of the drawing machine, which on the other hand remains inaccessible to the layers of the glass which have undergone cooling during their movement towards the inlet of the drawing nozzle,
in particular to the layers which have circulated between the outer surface of the float-stretcher and the inner surface of the basin, outside the said direct path. This deflected current, as it occurs in the drawing basin of the usual construction, is indicated by arrows in FIG. 1. Now, we know that, in these deep basins of usual construction, there may still be other currents which are exposed to cooling along the walls and the bottom of the basin, and which return in the direction of the stretching machine.
In the construction according to the invention, it is useful, although not essential, not to give the drawing basin a greater depth than that which is necessary for
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ensure the rational rise of the glass with respect to the puller and to allow access of the glass to the entrance of the latter. In this way, the glass stream is also prevented from deviating from the direct path, in the direction of depth.
Such a shallow basin is preferably provided with bottom heating to prevent excessive heat loss by radiation, and which thereby provides the necessary thermal equilibrium in the basin, whereby replaces deep glass bath, now discontinued.
. Other improvements will be further described below.
The installation according to the invention is shown in Figs. 2 to 4 in the form of one of the many possible embodiments. Fig. Z is a cross-sectional view, and FIG. 3, a view in longitudinal section, of the drawing chamber taken along the line A-B of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line C-D of FIG. 2.
The installation which is the subject of the inventicn is associated with any of the conventional basin ovens or with the communication channel going to such an oven. The partition 1 delimits the installation with respect to the basin oven or to the communication channel. The upper edge of this partition is located a few centimeters below the upper level of the glass in the drawing bath, so that only the upper layers, that is to say the most homogeneous , of the glass contained in the basin furnace, can pass over this partition and enter the drawing basin.
A register or drawer 3, the lower edge of which is located, during stretching, a few centimeters below the upper level of the glass, is mounted to move vertically; it allows the drawing installation to be completely separated from the tank furnaces.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
When the drawing basin has to undergo repairs, the register 3 is lowered as far as the partition 1 and air is blown into the space between this register and the drawing basin, through the opening 4, which has the effect of rapidly solidifying the glass which is in the part forming the overflow, so that the inevitable leaks between the partition 1 and the drawer cannot cause the glass to flow out of the furnace basin. It is thus possible to completely restore the drawing basin, without it being necessary to remove the glass from the bath.
The lower wall or sole of the drawing channel 2 is formed by the bottom plate 5. The latter is established so as to include a rib 6 which, seen in plan, has the appearance of a U, and whose surface upper limit forms the joint drawing machine with 7 when it is immersed in its working position. The side walls of the stretching chamber are formed by the bridges 8 and 9. Their shape corresponds to that already known in the stretching process according to Fourcault.
Below the inner deck 9, there is, as usual, a floating bridge 10 which determines the upper limit of the drawing channel 2. However, according to the present invention, this floating bridge is laterally movable. in the direction transverse to its length, and its lower face is cut obliquely so as to constitute the upper limit wall of the inclined drawing channel. In the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, that is to say in the position cerrospandant in the stretching, the advanced lower edge 101 of the bridge 10 is strongly pressed, under the action of the wedge 11, against @ 7, l 'stretching machine while the two end masses of @ each come to rest against one of the bosses 13, on a long
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
length of 20 - 30 cms.
The advanced edge 101 of the floating bridge extends on either side beyond the end masses of the drawing machine and up to the wall of the drawing tank. Communication between the zones of the glass bath situated in the vicinity of the end masses of the drawing machine, on the one hand, and the drawing channel, on the other hand, is interrupted, in the working position of the drawers. various members, by the projecting portions 18 and 19, respectively of the bridge 10 and of the rib 6. 12 designates a stop provided on the side wall of the weir and forming a fulcrum for the wedge 11, 14 is a removable plate pre - view in the side wall of the drawing tank and having an opening 4. Through the access to the opening 4, it is possible, as required, either to cool the volume of the weir by air, or to heat it using burners.
The plate 14 is removed during the preparations for the stretching, to allow the placement of the stretcher and the bridge 10, so that it is possible, by accessing through the opening thus obtained, to interrupt , in a safe and easy way, by wedging the bridge 10, the communication between the drawing channel 3 and the chamber. stretching.
The space 15 located below the drawing basin can be heated, as indicated above, using the burners 16.
The evacuation of the combustion gases from the heating chamber 15 takes place in this case through the outlet opening 17, which communicates with a chimney. Heating of the chamber 15 can also be effected by electrical means. The temperature in the latter chamber can be regulated in such a way that any heat transfer from the glass passing through the drawing channel 2, at the bottom 5 of the drawing basin, is avoided.
At the same time, this arrangement prevents de-trification in the drawing channel 2 and in the drawing slot.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the stretching machine 7. The periodic remelting of the glass of the drawing chamber, necessary in the Fourcault process, with stopping the drawing for several hours, every 4 to 5 days, is limited, thanks to the said arrangement. , in cases where the glass sheet should break below the first pair of rolls, or in cases where it is necessary to replace the stretcher. This also results in better conservation of the drawing nozzles, the useful life of which depends on the number of remelts carried out in the drawing chamber.
The recasting of the glass of the drawing chamber is carried out, in the manner known per se, by heating the drawing space above the drawing chamber using burners mounted in the wall at the end of the drawing chamber. said room.
In the installation according to the invention, the remelting of the glass of the drawing chamber is effectively promoted by the rise in temperature in the heating chamber 15 situated below the drawing basin.
When reheating the drawing chamber, the wedge 11 is removed and the movable bridge 10 is moved in the direction of the spool 3, so that the drawing machine can move freely in the glass of the drawing basin. Here too, a direct communication is thus obtained, via the drawing channel 2, between the mass of glass contained in the surrounding drawing chamber. of the drawing machine, on the one hand, and the drawing bath, on the other hand.
The position which the float-stretcher must occupy during the stretching operation is determined, in the longitudinal direction of the stretcher used, by the median position of the latter with respect to the chamber of 'drawing; in the transverse direction, by the bosses 13, and in depth, by the rib 6. the stretcher the height of the stretcher calculated in such a way that,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
when the said stretching machine is pushed into the glass bath until it comes to rest on the joint surface of the rib 6, the necessary glass overflow or spouting pressure is obtained during drawing , for the formation of the root of the glass table.
The extraction of the glass sheet is carried out as follows:
After that the. stretching chamber has been prepared, in the manner known per se, for the initiation of the stretching operation, and the cooling ducts and the lowering device of the stretching machine have been placed. To place it, the stretchers are pushed to the middle of the drawing chamber, against the bosses 13, and the leader of the table is guided. glass stretching machine. in the slot of @. the drawing float is then pressed, by means of the usual lowering device, against the rib 6 of the bottom of the drawing basin, after which the drawing operation is slowly started.
We then removed the. plate 14 disposed in front of the fixed bridge 9 and, accessing through the opening thus obtained, the shutter bridge 10, with a tight seal, is pressed against the stretching machine 7, and it is secured, using the wedge 11, by bearing on the stop 12 projecting from the side wall of the stretching chamber. The drawing channel 2 is therefore closed off - aux :. sides and is connected tightly to the slot of the stretcher, so that the root of the glass table. is supplied exclusively with glass arriving through this channel.
