 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

La figure 1 est une demi-coupe d'un mécanisme de transmission suivant l'invention, l'arbre de commande se trouvant à gauche et l'arbre commandé à droite;
La figure 2 est une coupe du mécanisme de la figure 1 suivant la ligne 2-2;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

    @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  Transmission mechanism for motor vehicles.

   The invention relates to a transmission mechanism for motor vehicles.

   It relates to a combination of a gear change mechanism with a hydraulic clutch known as a "hydraulic flywheel".

   The combination of the invention has the effect of making the hydraulic clutch act under determined performance conditions which are in a given ratio with the range of speed ratios established by the gear change mechanism.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The hydraulic clutch may have any known type of radial vanes or profiled cells of ordinary shape and separate housings may be employed for the clutch and for the entire transmission. In the embodiment described below, these two elements are enclosed in a single casing.

   Said embodiment does not have a main clutch on the engine, since the idle or neutral state of operation is achieved by completely releasing all control elements of the transmission, in addition to the hydraulic clutch having a slip factor. idle.

   As will be seen below, separate reverse gear is unnecessary in the mechanism described below; to obtain reverse gear, an element of the transmission is used which operates normally in forward gear.

   The nature and scope of the invention will be better understood from the characteristics of its implementation set out below with the accompanying drawing, on which:
FIG. 1 is a half-section of a transmission mechanism according to the invention, the control shaft being on the left and the controlled shaft on the right;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the mechanism of Figure 1 taken on line 2-2;
FIG. 3 is a graph indicating the yields plotted on the ordinate and the speeds plotted on the abscissa for various operating conditions of the mechanism of FIGS. 1 and 2.

   The mechanism shown is a combination of a selective gear change mechanism with a hydraulic turbo-clutch of the type known as a hydraulic flywheel, so arranged that, for gear ratios

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 chosen from the gear change mechanism, the efficiency of the hydraulic turbo-clutch increases proportionally, or conversely, as the slip factor of said clutch gradually decreases.

   In FIG. 1, the control shaft 1 of the motor is joined to a rotating housing 2, 3 by suitable bolts or by a similar means, the steering bearing 4 supporting a shaft 5 on which is wedged a impeller 6 with turbine blades, combined with a complementary impeller 7 with turbine blades. The casing 2 surrounds and encloses the fin wheels 6 and 7 and ends with a flange 9, to which a toothed ring 10 is fixed.

   A hollow shaft 11 surrounds the shaft 5 over a portion of its length and is rigidly connected to a planet carrier 12 and to the impeller 7. Pins 13 fixed in the planet carrier 12 serve as shafts for planet wheels. 14, which mesh with the ring gear 10 and with a central or sun gear 15 wedged on the hollow shaft 16 which surrounds the shaft 11. A drum element 17 wedged on the shaft 16 constitutes a braking surface 19 and also supports a group of clutch elements 20 corresponding with clutch elements 21 arranged to rotate with the planet carrier 12.

   A clutch hub 22 attached to a rearward extension of shaft 11 serves as a mounting means for a further group of clutch elements 23 corresponding to a group of clutch elements 24 supported by. a drum 25, which is in one piece with a core 26, the outer portion of the drum 25 also constituting a braking surface. The core 26 of the drum 25 is supported on the shaft 11 by a bearing 27.

   The drum 25 is in one piece with a hollow shaft 29 on which is wedged a central wheel 30 which meshes with the satellites 31, rotating on pins 32 mounted @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in a planet carrier 33. The planet wheels 31 also mesh with a toothed ring 34 in one piece with a drum 35 fixed on the shaft 5. The planet carrier 33 is fixed on a drum 36, having an outer braking surface 37 and the core 39 of the drum 36 constitutes the support of the third group of gears which ensure reverse gear.

   This third group comprises a central or sun gear 40, wedged on the shaft 5, planet wheels 41 mounted on spindles 42 which rotate with the core 39 and are fixed on it and a toothed ring 43 in one piece with the drum 44 which rotates with the driven or loaded shaft 50. The thrust bearing 45 supports the end of the shaft 5 in the shaft 50.

   A brake element 46 acts to prevent the drum 17 from rotating; a similar brake element 47 can block the drum 35 and a third brake 49 can also prevent the drum 36 from rotating.

   The means by which the various clutches and brakes are coupled and uncoupled is as follows:
The clutch 20, 21 couples by the action of a pressure plate 51 set in motion by pistons 52 which move in cylinders 53 integrally with the drum 17. The pressurized fluid is brought into the cylinders 53 by passage channels 54 coming from a stuffing box 55 mounted above the shaft 11 and receiving the pressurized fluid through a pipe 56 of a control device (not shown) which also controls the . fluid pressure operating the device applying the brake, as can be seen in figure 2.

   FIG. 2 represents the assembly of the brake 46, but can also represent the device applying the brakes 47 and 49.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

For control, brake 46 and clutch 20, 21 and brake 47 and clutch 23-24 can be operated in coordination, while brake 49 alone needs to be operated independently. The control device can be arranged to actuate individually a brake or a clutch, or a combination of two brakes and two clutches, or a brake and a clutch, or any other combination required at will to establish different speed combinations. .

   Figure 2 shows a cylinder 60 in which moves a piston 59 arranged to compress springs 61 and move a piston rod 63. The springs 61 act normally on the piston 59 so as to oscillate the lever 64 around. of the pivot 65, and to stop through the cell 66 the thrust exerted on the rod 67 which pivots around the eye 69 of the brake tape 46. The fixed end 70 of the tape 46 can be adjusted by means of a nut 71 which is screwed onto the threaded part of a slotted bolt 72. A pressurized fluid coming from an external servomotor source, is supplied by means of a suitable control device (not shown ) by the orifice 75 on the upper face of the piston 59 and on the underside of the piston 59 by an orifice 76.

   Depending on the control characteristics chosen by the manufacturer, the orifice 76 can be connected externally to the pipe 56, so as to make the brake 46 and the clutch 20-21 operate in coordination, that is to say that, when the pressurized fluid arrives through the two ports 75 and 54, the brake 46 releases and the clutch 20-21 couples. While this change is taking place, pressurized fluid can be admitted through port 76 of cylinder 60, so that the duration of brake release 46 and the driving capacity

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 of clutch 20-21 can be changed.

   Or the control of the arrival of the pressurized fluid in the orifices 75, 76 of the cylinder 60 and in the pipe 56, can be arranged so as to act successively, so that instead of the brake is released while the clutch mates, there is a neutral stopping time during which no dragging occurs as a result of brake and clutch action.

  The same observation applies to any of the brake and clutch combinations.

   The mechanism described above therefore comprises three unit groups of gears. The first unitary group comprises the central sun gear 15, the ring gear 10, the satellite carriers 12 and the satellites 14 and the combined elements, namely the brake 46 and the clutch 20-21, which operate in such a way that when the brake 46 is applied on the drum 17, the sun gear 15 serves as a reaction element, so that the ring gear 10 rotates the impeller 7 at a reduced speed with respect to the shaft of the motor 1. On the other hand, when the clutch 20-21 is coupled and the brake 46 released, the connection established between the planet carrier 12) and the sun gear 15 turns the paddle wheel 7 at engine speed.

   By alternately actuating the brake 46 and the clutch 20-21, the rotational speed of the paddle wheel 7 is varied relative to that of the engine. When neither the brake 46, nor the clutch 20-21 are actuated, no engagement movement can be transmitted through the wing wheels 6, 7 and to the rest of the transmission.

   The second unitary group consists of the crown 34, the sun gear 30, the planet wheels 31, the planet carrier 33 and the combined elements, namely the brake 47 and the clutch 23, 24, which operate in such a way as to cause variations.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 in the drive between the first group and the elements described below, which transmit the command to the controlled shaft 50. By alternately actuating the brake 47 and the clutch 23-24, one obtains speed variations between the shafts 5 and 50 which result from the speed variations undergone by the central wheel 30.

   The third unitary group which consists of the central wheel 40, the satellites 41, the crown 43 and the combined elements, namely the brake 49, has two functions: it serves as a reverse transmission when the brake 49 prevents the drum 36 to rotate and variable coupling device with the brake 49 released, when a torque can be applied to the central or sun gear 40 and simultaneously to the crown 34 and when the crown 43 determines the torque transmitted to the shaft 50. By actuating the brake 47 and the clutch 23, 24, one therefore acts on the operating conditions of the first and second group, while the brake 49 serves only to establish reverse gear.

   The operation is as follows. With the engine joined to shaft 1 and running at low speed at no-load, and the vehicle load being applied to shaft 50, if none of the brakes or clutches described is applied or coupled, it is obvious that no drive can exist since no reaction is established between the crown 10 rotating at engine speed and the crown 43 joined to the controlled shaft 50.

   If the engine speed increases from this low no-load speed, rotating the planet wheels 41 and the planet gear 15 driven by friction, as a sliding torque is established between the impellers 6, 7 by circulation of oil through the passage channels of the fins, the shaft 5 rotates the gear 40 and like the crown 43

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 is stationary, the satellites 41 rotate and cause the drum 36 to rotate. If, at this moment, the brake 49 is applied, the paddle wheel 6 is subjected to an increasing load.

   If it is assumed that the load on the shaft 50 is large and the speed of rotation of the fluid in the elements 6,7 of the hydraulic flywheel is sufficient, the speed of the impeller 7 decreases, so that the ring 10 rotating on the satellites 14 which slow down, rotates the sun gear 15 and the elements which are connected to it in the opposite direction at a certain speed greater than that of the engine. It is obvious that this couple of residual forces cannot transmit the movement to the shaft 50, so that the device in the situation described so far does not transmit any movement and remains neutral.

   If we only apply the brake 46 which immobilizes the sun gear 15, the torque acting on the ring gear 10 forces the paddle wheel 7 to rotate at a certain speed lower than that of the motor due to the reduction resulting from the elements 15, 14 and 10. The shaft 50 cannot yet be driven, since the coupling force transmitted by the impeller 7 to the impeller 6 can only rotate the planet carrier 39 and the drum 36 which does not. 'have no connection either by the brake 47 or by the clutch 23-24.

   It can therefore be seen that in order for the torque to be transmitted from the motor to the controlled shaft 50, there must be a connection or a reaction in the second and the third group.

   If now the brake 47 is also applied, the sun gear 30 becomes a reaction point. The brake 46 of the first group being applied, the paddle wheel 7 is forced to rotate by transmitting a torque to the shaft 5 by the paddle wheel 6. The crown 34 and the sun gear 40 all rotating.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 two, the planet carrier 33 rotates because the sun gear 30 acts as a fulcrum and the planet carrier 39 rotating with it receives a torque, due to the resistance of the crown 43, the rotational movement of the crown 43 and of the controlled shaft 50 is therefore a compound movement: the torque coming from the shaft 5 is shared between the gear wheels 34 and 40 and recombines at the wheel 43 with a mechanical advantage according to the ratios of the gears of the second and third groups.

   All of the torque transmitted to the shaft 50 passes through the bladed wheels 6 and 7 and the lower relative speed of the wheel 7 with respect to the shaft 1 of the motor gives rise to a slip factor between the wheels 6 and 7 at a point of the characteristic curve of FIG. 3 for devices with a hydraulic flywheel, where the efficiency is low, for example at point X of the OM curve.

   When the planet carrier 12 and the sun gear 15 are rigidly coupled by the clutch 20-21, the impeller 7 rotates at engine speed, and the torque transmitted by the impeller 6,7 is represented by a certain point Y on the ST curve. For a given range of speeds of shaft 1, there is an infinite series of similar X and Y points possible on the preceding curves.

   The brake 47 being applied, there are therefore two possible operating conditions between the shafts 1 and 50, depending on whether the brake 46 or the clutch 20-21 are actuated. These two conditions provide two speed ratios with a different degree of flexibility in walking, one comprising a coefficient of slip, for example at point X and the other with another coefficient, for example at point Y.

  This situation obviously results from the variable coupling effect which occurs between the bladed wheels 6 and 7,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 when the wheel 7 rotated at engine speed, or at reduced speed.

   It is now necessary to study the running conditions which exist when the clutch 23-24 is coupled.

  The link established between the planet carrier 12 of the first group and the sun gear 30 of the second group produces a direct drive of the sun gear 30 by the paddle wheel 7.

  Whether the wheel 7 rotates at the engine speed or at a certain lower speed depends on the conditions in which the brake 46 and the clutch 20-21 are found. The resistance of shaft 50 to crown 43 now establishes these conditions; a torque component is transmitted by the wheel 6 to the central sun gear 40 of the third group and to the crown 34 of the second group and a second torque component passing through the shaft 11, the hub 22, the clutch 23-24 and the Center sun gear 30 combines with torque from ring gear 34, resulting in rotational movement of planet carrier 33-42. The first component of torque transmitted to the central wheel 40 combines here with that of the planet carrier 42.

   The clutch 20-21 of the first group being coupled under these conditions, a direct drive is obtained since the unitary rotational movement of the rotating parts of the first group provides a drive in which the relative slip between the wing wheels 6 and 7 is multiplied. by the series-parallel device comprising the gears of the second and third groups.

   The second group of curves L'M 'and S'T' in FIG. 3 represents the two ranges of efficiency of the hydraulic coupling device, when the clutch 23-24 is coupled and the brake 46 is applied or the clutch 20-21 is engaged.

   The table below of the speed ratios obtained by actuating the clutch and braking elements described above indicates the succession of maneuvers available to the driver. The capital X in each box indicates the element that must be actuated to obtain a given range of gear ratios:

   The brakes and clutches can be operated manually, under Inaction of speed or torque, or under the action of speed and torque at will and can be carried out by means of relays or similar devices following needs.

   Due to the known increase in efficiency of hydraulic clutches, such as the vaned wheels 6 and 7 with the speed communicated to them, the losses of @. engine torque in the device described above are significantly reduced compared to those occurring in mechanisms where the hydraulic clutch is located directly between a drive shaft and a loaded shaft.

   In addition, the transmission device of the first group which has a selective control of the relative speed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 of the bladed wheel 7 of the control with respect to the speed of the motor shaft, confers remarkable flexibility on the device providing the OM and ST curves of FIG. 3 and completes the range of speed ratios provided by the controls of the second group in which the resultants of the movements to the crown 43 provide four ranges of forward speed reports, instead of four fixed and defined speed ratios. That is to say that there are ranges of speed ratios, in which variations occur depending on the speed of the engine and the operating conditions.

   To take full advantage of the particular characteristics of the so-called hydraulic flywheel, the efficiency of which varies between such wide limits in a given speed range, the relation between the elements of the flywheel and the selective ratios of the gears is established, so that for low ratios speed, the hydraulic coupling operates normally, following the less efficient portions of its power curve, while, when these ratios are large, not only does it operate according to the most efficient portions of its curve, but also the General slip between the drive and driven shafts is increased due to the presence of the split torque recombination device, combined with the coupling for high ratios.

   There is therefore a separate slip characteristic value for each position of the transmission ratio controls; the slip is strong for the positions corresponding to a low ratio and weak for those corresponding to a high ratio. There are in the device shown two intermediate ratios between the high ratio and the low ratio, and as the ratio gradually increases, the efficiency of the hydraulic coupling also increases.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

   One of the advantages of the device of the invention consists in the smoothness of the driving in first gear compared to that of ordinary fluid and gear combinations. Another advantage results from the low slip torque at low normal engine speeds, the transmission groups being set for a low gear ratio. This advantage eliminates the so-called "creeping" phenomenon which is ordinarily observed in hydraulic couplings of this general type. It is known that in so-called hydraulic flywheels, when one of the elements is stationary, the slip is proportional to a factor greater than that given by the law of squares.

   In the device according to the invention, the speed of the primary rotor of the hydraulic coupling is reduced, when it is set for the first gear ratio and the slip torque is thereby reduced by this superimposed factor. to the gear ratio. Moreover, whatever the value of the slip, it does not increase by the integer value of the first gear multiplication ratio as in the case of known ordinary devices, but only undergoes the multiplication of a portion of the first gear total transmission. As a result, it is evident that the final slip torque transmitted to the controlled shaft when the motor is idling is extremely low compared to that of ordinary control devices of this type.

   Conversely, when the transmission is set for a high gear ratio, the hydraulic coupling is arranged so that the engine torque is transmitted through multiple paths, i.e. part of the engine torque is transmitted. by the mechanical device and part by the hydraulic coupling. The advantage that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 The result is that the hydraulic coupling operates at a relatively low torque and therefore with a high efficiency. Hydraulic efficiency losses therefore only apply to a portion of the energy supplied, the rest of which passes through a high efficiency mechanical transmission.

   It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing description of the device shown in the accompanying drawing is given by way of example and that this device may undergo modifications reasonably encompassed within the limits of the scope of the invention.
