 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Improvements in electrical signaling systems.

   The present invention relates to electrical signaling systems and more particularly to systems in which the signaling is done by energy distribution lines arranged such that a high voltage network supplies several low voltage networks. - if we.

   In signaling systems of this kind hence. we want to radiate from a given point to several low voltage networks. We generally find it necessary to make branches on the high voltage network which includes costly devices and corresponding protection devices.

  However, several power suppliers consider

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 any interconnection with the high voltage grid is unfavorable and certain advantages from the point of view of operation and negotiations are offered if this can be avoided.

   The main aim of the invention is to allow the centralized control of the type of networks indicated above while avoiding any special connection to the high voltage network.

   One of the characteristics of the invention in an electrical signaling system in which the operation of the control members responds to high frequency currents transmitted on the electrical energy distribution lines, is that the control is carried out from a single point to several low voltage networks supplied by a common high voltage network, the high frequency currents being applied to one of the low voltage networks and propagating to the other networks by the high voltage network.

   Another characteristic of the invention in an electrical signaling system the operation of the control members of which responds to high frequency currents transmitted on the electrical energy distribution lines, is that the high frequency currents are applied. to a particular low-voltage network and are transmitted through the high-voltage network to another low-voltage network where they are used to start a new high-frequency generator to supply the current necessary for the operation of the control devices of the second low voltage network.

   The invention will be better understood from the following description of an embodiment method referring to the attached drawing. On this plan is a circuit representing an application of the invention to the transmission of a signal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 from a three-phase alternating current distribution network to another network of the same type via the high-voltage distribution lines. In both networks the signals can be used for controlling street lighting, changing the meter tariff, or for other similar purposes.

   Referring now to the plan, this one represents two substations designated by SUBI and SUB2 supplying separately three-phase alternating current distribution networks whose phase conductors are designated in each case by A, B and C while the neutral is denoted by N. The substations themselves are supplied by the main production station by means of a high voltage HV network and electrical energy is transmitted to the substations by voltage reducing transformers.

   When you want to transmit a signal from a substation 1 to a substation 2 and perhaps to other substations of the network similar to substation 2, you temporarily close the NC contactor and the primary of the step-up transformer D is switched on. The second area of transformer D which can generate a voltage of the order of 6000 Volts is part of a spark gap circuit which includes spark gap G, capacitor F and the primary winding of transformer E whose secondary is connected to one of the secondary windings of the main transformer of the substation.

   When the NC contactor has been closed in the manner indicated, the spark gap operates and produces a high frequency current of the order of 3000 cycles per second which is injected into a winding of the substation transformer by a circuit which is tuned by means of a variable capacitor VC1 to give the maximum flow.

   This high frequency signal is therefore transmitted from the secondary to the primary of the trans-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 trainer of the substation on the high voltage network, by which it passes again to all the other substations which are connected to it and in particular to the substation 2. each substation which receives it, the high current frequency passes from the primary to the secondary of the main transformer and is received at the output of one of the windings of the transformer in a circuit comprising the choke coil H and the variable capacitor VC2 which is tuned to give the maximum.

   The choke H is loosely coupled to the choke I which is also in a circuit tuned by the variable capacitor VC3 and as a result of the valve effect of the rectifier MR the high frequency signal is reflected by the e- raising of the positive potential of the capacitor FC which is connected in the circuit of the grid of the lamp VI. Normally the grid of the VI lamp is kept negative so that no anode current occurs, but as soon as the grid is made positive as a result of the signal an anode current appears and the relay J which is in the cir - cooked from 1 to the plate attracts and performs the functions which will be described later.

   The H and I chokes are adjustable with respect to each other with the aim of eliminating as much as possible the effects of stray high frequency currents which abound in such AC networks and so that the adjustment can be carried out. without disturbing the tuning of the circuit a special coil construction has been adopted.

   Preferably the coil H consists of a ring on which are wound two coils connected so as to give an external magnetic field along its axis. Coil I has the form of an air solemoid, the axis of which intersects the axis of the ring and is located in the plane of the ring, the coil H rotating around its axis, and consequently we can @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 realize that by the rotation of the coil H the coupling between the two coils can vary so as to give a variable selectivity without modifying the value of the peak resonance voltage of the circuit.

   It can be seen from the circuit that in the example described the attraction of relay J is used to market a spark gap generator at substation 2 whose flow is applied to the neutral of the substation transformer and is used to control devices, not shown, but supposed to be connected between one of the phase conductors and the earth and to several street lighting lamps or to other devices connected to the network.

   In particular the relay J by attracting completes the circuit of the electromagnetic contactor K which closes and puts under current the primary winding of the reducing transformer L. The secondary winding of the transformer L which develops approximately 6000 volts is connected in circuit with a generator spark gap comprising a capacitor M, a spark gap N and the primary winding of transformer 0.

  The spark gap generator is set to produce a frequency current of the order of 5000 cycles per second which is initiated through the winding of transformer 0 on the neutral conductor of the transformer serving the low voltage network of the substation 2.

   It is understood that the high frequency signal which drives street lighting fixtures is of a much higher frequency than the signal passing from substation 1 to substation 2, but in case there is some danger of blocking at substation 2 because of the tuned detector circuit controlled by the spark gap generator of substation 2 which it caused to operate, it is easy to ensure that the relay J as soon as he attracted,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 cuts its own circuit after a predetermined time.

   The control devices of the network supplied by substation 1 will naturally be set to operate on the lowest frequency which is used for transmission on the high voltage lines and these devices will be connected between a phase conductor and the neutral. .

   As an alternative to the lamp circuit of substation 2 a discharge tube could be used which would be set to operate near its burst voltage under normal conditions and which would burst upon receipt of a. signal coming from substation 1 to cause the attraction of relay J.

     As another variant, it is possible to actuate in certain circumstances a relay directly sensitive to the voltage of the unamplified signal.

   Note also that the signal received from the high voltage network can pass to other networks by direct amplification rather than driving a separate high frequency generator. In this case the frequency will naturally be the same and it will be necessary to take measures to prevent the signal from sustaining itself, for example by transmitting only for a time fixed in advance as has been suggested above. Another possibility is to use a separate network for public lighting in which case the signal received by the high voltage network will control the sending of energy to the public lighting network and without being transmitted by superimposition to the network. general low voltage network.

   It is understood that the invention is not limited to an electrical energy distribution system of the type shown but is also applicable to other distribution systems.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   For example, high voltage lines may themselves have one or more transformation points to raise or lower voltage, or the number of phases may be different in high and low voltage.
