  Firme Röchling'sche Eisen- und Stahlwerke G.m.b.H.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   Process -For the preparation of steel with low phosphorus and sulfur content.

   The present invention relates to the preparation of a steel with a low phosphorus and sulfur content in a basic converter or in a SIEMENS-MARTIN furnace.

   Different methods have already been proposed to improve THOMAS steel or SIEMENS-MARTIN steel. For example, additional refining of THOMAS steel or SIEMENS-MARTIN steel has been proposed in an electric furnace. An attempt was also made to subsequently treat the steel with a second slag, and this both in the THOMAS converter or the SIEMENS-MARTIN furnace itself and after the spill. However, these proposals have so far not been able to acquire practical importance, as these methods excessively increase the preparation costs or encounter technical difficulties.

  What is troublesome in particular in the THOMAS process is that it does not admit of being supplemented by provisions causing a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 lowering of temperature, therefore by slowing down the ripening process or by treatment with cooling products. It has been proposed to subject the THOMAS steel or the finished SIEMENS-MARTIN steel to a subsequent treatment with a fluid slag. However, since the melting of very basic slag requires very high temperatures, this process therefore results in a large consumption of heat during the melting, the use of expensive electric heating, expensive furnaces and causes heavy wear of the furnace.

   It is true that the fusibility of slag of this kind can be increased by adding fluorite (spar) or other fluorides, but it is known that this addition causes a strong reduction in the solubility of the slag in citric acid, so that this process is unusable in countries poor in natural phosphates and other sources of phosphorus.

   In accordance with the present invention, the dephosphoric action of the THOMAS or SIEMENS-MARTIN slag is increased by the fact that a calcareous slag with an alkaline content is formed which is added in the THOMAS converter or in the IEMENS-MARTIN furnace. instead of lime or mixed with lime. It is also possible to introduce separately into the converter or into the furnace the alkaline products and lime and then advantageously used soda, preferably not light commercial soda, because the loss of dust would be too great and moreover the dust of soda would interfere with the arrangement of the grids in the rooms. Instead, soda in the form of molten bricks or blocks is introduced into the furnace.

   In order to prevent the cooling of the bath and to accelerate the dissolution of the added slagging products, mixtures of lime and alkali substances, or the alkali substances alone, for example soda, are added in the heated or liquid state. In order to avoid evaporation of the alkalis during the pre-refining period or the melting period, the alkali substances are preferably added during the dephosphorization period. In this case it is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 recommended to use liquid soda, so that alkalis do not evaporate at high temperatures, before combining with phosphoric acid.

   To increase the refining effect, solid refining products can be added to the alkali or molten soda ferrite can be used which can be obtained by melting soda and iron oxides together. Such a melt does not contain carbonic acid, so that cooling of the bath by expelling carbonic acid is avoided.

   When operating by changing the slag, it is often sufficient to add the soda only to the second slag.

  If it is desired to produce a particularly pure THOMAS steel, the THOMAS slag is evacuated and the finished steel is supercharged in a known manner with a second slag by adding alkali substances according to the invention. The addition of alkalis accelerates the melting of the lime which is particularly used during the short period of blowing with the second slag. The treatment of the steel with slag containing alkali bodies in the THOMAS converter or in the SIEMENS-MARTIN furnace can also be combined with the subsequent purification outside the converter or the SIEMENSMARTIN furnace, for example in an electric furnace.

   The addition of alkalis increases the fluidity of the slag as well as its reaction power, which speeds up the refining process. Increasing the basicity of the slag by adding alkali substances makes it possible to obtain a steel with a low phosphorus and sulfur content and at the same time decreases the duration of the charge. The process is significantly less expensive than that of dephosphorization with strontianite and the like. It also makes it possible to totally or partially avoid the addition of fluorite, the drawbacks of which are known. Unlike fluorite, the addition of soda increases the solubility in citric acid of phosphoric acid in the slag, and this increase is by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 example already made sensitive by an addition of 10 kilo. of soda to 4700 kilo. slag.

   The new process makes it possible, among other things, to prepare a THOMAS steel with a low phosphorus content without the waste being higher than that of the usual THOMAS process.

  When operating by changing the slag, the second slag can be reused in the known manner in the next charge, so that in this mode of operation no additional loss of iron and phosphorus occurs.

   Example of realization:
22. 000 kilo. THOMAS steel with 1.9% phosphorus and 0.6% manganese was blown in the usual manner. Before the end of the blowing period, 60 kilograms were added. of soda. The finished steel contained 0.022 phosphorus, but was not overblown. It was obtained 20,000 kilograms. of steel, which corresponds to a yield of 90.7%.
