 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

      en regardant dans la direction, qu'indique la flèche dans la figure 1.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  Improvements in the production of lined wadding.

   This invention relates to the manufacture of lined wadding, that is to say wadding established in the form of a web consisting of one or more layers of cotton, wool, kapok or the like. carded, and covered on one or both sides with paper or other suitable covering material

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 which will be referred to hereinafter as "paper".

   In accordance with the invention, the carded thin web which is output by a carding machine or the like is deposited under the surface of a moving web or web of paper which is sprayed or otherwise treated with glue or adhesive material immediately. before the deposit on her of this thin veil. This can be accumulated in any suitable thickness and can gain a device of pressure rollers intended to force the cotton wool to come into intimate contact by pressure with the paper thus coated with this adhesive. The cotton wool thus covered can then be passed between support rollers, so as to cut it up by means of circular dividing knives to give rise to pieces having the required widths before their winding into coils.

   If the cotton wool is to be wrapped between two layers of paper, a strip of paper previously sprayed or otherwise treated with glue or other adhesive material is forced to pass between a pressure roller and the uncovered surface of the cotton wool, so that the surface of the paper thus coated with glue is brought by pressure into contact with the cotton wool. This can then be cut at the same time as its paper coverings in the form of strips which are wound up to make reels.

   In the accompanying drawings
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a machine for covering cotton wool with paper on one side or both sides according to the invention.

   Figure 2 is an end view of this machine,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

      looking in the direction indicated by the arrow in figure 1.

   Figure 3 is a plan view of this machine.

   FIG. 4 is a view showing the application of the invention to a supply of the web by a so-called "camel back" device.

   FIG. 5 is a view showing an alternative feed of the web allowing the accumulation of the cotton wool to any thickness required on the paper covered with glue.

   In the machine whose construction is shown in Figures 1 to 3, A designates a slatted distribution apron on which the thin web is deposited as it is released by the usual stripper of the combing machine of the carding machine or similar machine.

  According to Figure 1, the carded web descends in the direction indicated by the arrows to the lower lapper apron B of a Blamire lapper. This apron moves very slowly backwards and forwards along rails D arranged perpendicular to the slatted apron A to lay the thin carded veil in the form of a web on the lapper apron B while the latter moves slowly in the direction indicated by the arrow b, so as to accordion-like superimposition of a number of thicknesses of the web and thus gradually transform the web into a wadding of the suitable thickness, in the known manner.

   E denotes a paper reel from which the paper web! is drawn by passing under a guide roller el and on a support table before passing over the surface of the apron

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 inner lapper B and before the thin web leaves the slatted apron A. This paper support table occupies a location between the guide roller el and the adjacent part of the lower lapper apron B. Above the. table are one or more spray nozzles F from which gushes out under pressure the glue or adhesive material which will be distributed over the. top side of the paper. These nozzles F can be mounted in a fixed or mobile position, so as to continuously distribute the glue over the entire surface of the paper.

   If they are mounted mobile, they can be designed to receive an oscillatory movement in the direction indicated by the arrows. ± in figure 2 ', by means of a bar. ± 1 animated by a backward movement. back and forth, to which motion is communicated by a connecting rod f2 and a crank ± 3 operated from any suitable part of the machine and at any required speed. The distributor nozzles F must, in such a case, be connected by flexible pipes to supply pipes through which the glue arrives.

   In the construction shown in figure 2, each nozzle F is provided with two flexible connectors, one of which designated by. ± 4 can be connected to a pipe. ± 5 leading to a source of compressed air and provided with an adjustment valve. ± 6. The other flexible connector designated by f7 is connected in a similar way to a pipe. ± 8 leading to the inlet of the adhesive and provided with an adjustment valve f9. In front of the anterior roller b1 belonging

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 on the lower lapper apron there are two pressure rollers G, Gl followed by a support roller H and dividing knives or discs or cut-offs J, J1. To the right of the latter is a drum K as well as a roulea.u of winding L intended to wind the cotton wool now covered.

   During the operation of the machine, the paper is drawn from the reel E and then brought to the lower lapper apron B; it then passes between the pressure rollers; G, G1 then between the cut-off knives or discs J, J1 to reach the feeder roller L. It is then that the sprinkling operation begins, as well as the deposit of the thin carded veil coming from the slatted apron A on the surface of the glue coated paper. After the wadding has been accumulated to the required thickness, a thickness that can moreover be adjusted by varying the speed of advance of the lapper or the operating speed of the carding machine or both, it passes with its paper covering between the pressure rollers G, G1 and the cut-off knives up to the feed roller L.

   At this point it is wound in the form of a coil.

   In order to allow both sides of the wadding to be covered with paper, a further reel of paper M is provided which is supported in bearings at the output end of the machine. The strip of paper m which is drawn from this second reel M passes under a guide roller ml and over a table m2 where it is subjected to a spraying operation by nozzles N as described above. The sprayed paper then passes through-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 above a guide roller m3 then between the pressure rollers G, Gl, so that its surface covered with glue is brought by pressure into intimate contact with the cotton wool. The latter, provided with its two coatings, is then cut up and enveened in the form of coils in the manner previously described.

   The invention is applicable to any other suitable lapping machine.

   In the schematic view shown in Figure 4, the invention is applied to what is called a "camel back" lapping machine. In this figure, 0 designates one of a pair of endless belts which oscillate laterally across the lower lapper apron P. The thin caxdé veil which is released from the comb of the carding machine or ma, chine analogous rises along an inclined apron of the "camel back" machine to pass over a folding apron with a pendulum motion and descend between the twin bands 0 of which only one is shown, which transforms the web of material in a wadding having any suitable thickness by virtue of its rearward and then forward movement across the lower lapper apron P in the known manner.

   E designates the reel from which comes the first strip of paper e which passes over the lower lapper apron P after it has been sprinkled by the glue or adhesive material which spouts out through the nozzles F. The paper then passes between the pressure rollers G, G , G1 and G, and G and G3, between the cutting knives or discs or dividers J, J1, in a manner substantially similar to that which has been described

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 higher, before being enveened in the form of L coils.

   M designates a second reel of paper from which is drawn a strip of paper m which passes under a guide roller m1 and which is sprayed by the glue which shoots out of the nozzles N, after which it passes par.! 'above a guide roller m3 and between the upper pressure roller G3 and the wadding, so as to cover the upper face of this wadding with paper.

   FIG. 5 represents a variant of a lapping machine comprising two aprons or endless bands Q, R placed in a row and moving in the directions indicated by the arrows q and r; these aprons occupy a location superimposed on another endless apron S which moves in the direction indicated by the arrow s. T and U denote two rollers which move rearward and forward across the lower lapper V apron.

   In this construction, the thin carded web is drawn from the comber W of the carding machine or similar machine by the plate X forming a stripper which deposits it on the apron R of which it passes between the aprons Q and S then between the rollers T, U which lay it in the form of a sheet on the paper coated with glue which is placed on the apron V. The cotton wool accumulates on the paper to any required thickness then passes through a device of pressure rollers and cut-off knives which may be similar to those described above.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   Instead of the invention being applied to lapping machines, it can be applied to a whole range of carding machines or similar machines, a web of paper being brought to one end after having been treated with glue. and before the batting has been laid on the treated paper. During its passage through the various machines, the web accumulates according to any required thickness, and its uncovered surface which comes out through the dispensing end of the machine can be covered with paper already treated with an adhesive in a similar manner. to that described.
