  " PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX BOITES ET AUTRES RECIPIENTS POUR LIQUIDES,
POUDRES ET AUTRES n

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  "IMPROVEMENTS TO BOXES AND OTHER CONTAINERS FOR LIQUIDS,
POWDERS AND OTHERS n
The present invention relates to boxes and other containers for milk and other liquids, powders and the like, fits of cardboard, paper, or the like, and then rendered liquid-tight or waterproofed by a wax treatment or other appropriate material.

   The invention relates to a bundle or container which is a quadrangular prism or which has the shape of a truncated pyramid, with one end or,) base perpendicular to the axis, and formed by bending a blank to obtain a tube four-sided with a longitudinal junction, and then folding back on the bottom the ends of the four sides of the tube, two opposite parts being folded flat and the others being folded diagonally on themselves, so as to form two triangles complementary pieces engaging one another between the parts folded flat so as to leave four thicknesses of material

 over the entire surface. These parts are pressed to form a raised central part with a marginal indentation or face on which the container can rest.

   The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example only, one embodiment of a container according to the invention.

   Figure 1 shows a cardboard blank prepared for folding to form a truncated pyramid container with horizontal top,
Figure 2 shows the body produced by folding the blank into a tubular shape, with the parts of the base partially closed.

   Figure 3 is a plan view from below of the completely closed base with the outermost part torn off.

   Figure 4 is a cross section of the portion of the container, near the bottom, with the base pressed to form a raised central portion.

   Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the container with its upper part partially closed.

   Figure 6 is a side view of the completely closed container.

   Figure 7 shows a cardboard blank prepared for folding to form a truncated pyramid container with an inclined top bottom.

   FIG. 8 is a side view of the container with an inclined upper bottom, when it is closed.

   In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 6, the container has the shape of a truncated pyramid with four faces slightly inclined relative to the axis, the slope being for example 1 in 10 and the two funds being perpendicular to the axis.

   The shape of the blank used to form this container is shown in Figure 1 in which the broken lines

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 represent the cutout lines intended to facilitate the folding of the blank, the panels a, b, c, d, constituting the side faces of the body of the container: Three of these panels have upper extensions a, b, c, of approximately square shape, while the fourth side d, which is somewhat wider than the others, has an upper extension dl of low height.

   The four side panels also have extensions a2, b2, c2, d2, also of approximately square shape, except for the part b2 extended by a strip b3 and for the extension d2 which comprises a strip d3 of width equal to approximately the half of that of this extension d2. Another strip is provided on one of the longitudinal edges of the blank, as shown in a3 and gummed or otherwise secured to the edge of the panel d when the blank has been folded to form the body of the container. A single notch or division is made longitudinally between the lower extensions b2, c2 of the two adjacent panels b, c, in order to allow the formation of the base as explained below.

   The folding of the blank is carried out by applying it to a mandrel f of approximately square section, as shown in FIG. 2, the folding operation being facilitated by the notches in the cardboard along the dashed lines shown in FIG. 1, c ' That is to say along the longitudinal and transverse edges of the four faces a, b, c, d,, The junction lines of the connected bottom parts a2, b2, c2, d2, and the junctions of the upper extensions al, bl, cl, between them and with the respective side faces a, b, c, as well as the diagonals on the extensions a1 and bl, b2 of the upper and lower bottoms opposite and which must be folded back on themselves, and the junction of the bands or lips a3, b3, d3, with the respective panels and extensions can also be notched in the same way.

   The adhesive used to fix

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the a3 handes on the longitudinal junction can be dried by heated pads pressing these parts firmly holding them in place while the container body is still on the mandrel.

     At the base of the container, the bottom parts, or ends of the four side faces a, b, c, d, are also folded over each other, two of them opposite a2, b2, being folded flat and the other deax a2, c2 being folded diagonally on themselves so as to. form two isosceles right triangles in double thickness. The last two parts a2, c2, are folded over to occupy symmetrical positions between the internal and external end parts, FIG. 2 showing the part d2 folded flat on the end of the mandrel f and diagonally on itself and brought partially on part d2, and the other parts a2, b2, not folded.

   It will be understood that, in real practice, the parts a2, b2, are folded almost simultaneously, the part a2 folded diagonally sliding into place next to the part c2 folded similarly, and against the flat part d2, as shown in Figure 3, while part b2 is folded flat over the remaining parts so as to press the assembly evenly against the end of the mandrel. The strip d3 which is integral with the end internal part d2 is engaged between the diagonally folded parts c2, a2, and the end external part b2 and the face b which is integral with the latter is applied to the external face of the container.

   After the bottom parts have thus been folded over and pressed against each other, the four plies are pressed, as shown in figure 4, by a die, e, or the like, which in combination with a cavity f in the end of the mandrel, produces a raised central portion g with a marginal indentation or face g1 on which the container can rest stably on the surface on which it rests.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   When the container has been filled, the upper part is closed by folding back the upper extension b1 to connect it with the extension or the strip dl on the extreme edge of the bottom panel, the intermediate side portions al, cl, being folded diagenally inwards so as to overlap transversely under the narrow part b1 folded over from above, as can be seen in figure 5.

  The four end edges of these side parts a1, cl, are then placed in line between the edges of the other two parts b1, dl, and the six layers of cardboard, extending in principle equal lengths across the container. , are fixed by any suitable closure device, these lengths being shown to be substantially less than the width of the fourth panel d. The two opposite edges of the part bl folded from above are, therefore, well placed in the width of the container and of the closure device, the latter being for example constituted by a metal strip h with U-shaped section fixed to the junction of closure.

   These edges are also shorter than the width of the container. This closure device, with the six layers of cardboard which it clamps, can stand in the same plane as the horizontal upper bottom of the container or be somewhat raised to form a handle as shown in figure 6.

   In another embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 7 and 8, the container is a pyramid with four faces slightly inclined on the axis, the bottom being perpendicular to the axis and the wider upper part being. inclined about 35 degrees on this axis. The shape of the blank used to constitute the container is shown at. Figure 7, the broken lines showing the notches to facilitate folding. The panels, i, j, k, 1, constitute the side faces of the body of the container, but in this case the panel j, which is to form the front side of the container, is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 of height considerably smaller than that of the panel 1 which must constitute the rear face, and the two side panels i, k, have their upper edge inclined.

   The three panels i, j, k, have upper extensions il, jl, k1, respectively, while the fourth panel 1 has an upper extension 11 of low height. The extension jl is approximately square, but the extensions il, k1, of the side panels each have the shape of a quadrilateral formed by two approximately right triangles whose hypotenuses coincide with the diagonal fold line, the outer edges of these extensions folded diagonally being approximately the same length as the side edges. The four panels have lower extensions i2, j, k2, 12, of substantially square shape, the two extensions j2, k2, being separated by a line of notches or division, and bands j3, 13, and 14 are also provided .

   The folding of the blank to form the tubular body and the closing of the base are carried out in principle as in the case of the embodiment already described, but the closing of the upper part is carried out so as to produce an inclined top, the extension jl of the front panel j being folded towards the extension 11 of the longer opposite panel 1, with the upper extensions il, kl, of the other panels folded diagonally inwards, so as to provide four upper edges aligned with the overlapping edges at the part top of the inclined extension jl and of the longer panel, or front panel 1. The various edges are then fixed by a closure strip h, as in the previous case, the closed container being shown in FIG. 8.

   The posterior part d, or the longer side 1 of the tubular body of the container, may be notched along a transverse line x which extends just below the device.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 closing tif h, this line being intended to be cut to form a pouring orifice which opens automatically when the side faces of the container are clamped when the container is grasped to lift it and pour the contents out . The weight of the contents ensures the opening of the orifice by inflating the face of the container outwards while the upper edge of the orifice is held straight by the adjacent closure strip.

   The container can also be notched so as to provide a pouring orifice at one of the angles, and this orifice can be circular or similar in shape to allow passage of a torch in order to drink the contents, if desired.

   It is understood that, in the manufacture of the containers, the bases are usually closed as soon as the tubular bodies have been formed, and, for example, by the die, e, or other pressing means cooperating with the mandrels on which the tubes are shaped. body, and that the closing of the other ends is postponed until the containers have been filled. Consequently, when the containers have the shape of a truncated pyramid, the empty containers can be introduced into each other before folding the upper parts, the latter being arranged in the same planes as the corresponding side faces of the truncated pyramid. .

  After filling, the containers are closed by folding the upper parts of the three side faces as described above, and by applying the metal closure strips or other devices. In this state, the containers can be stored, for example by placing them in a vertical station on trays or the like, with a minimum of wasted space, compared with containers of cylindrical or frustoconical shape.
