Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Method and device for supporting sheets or plates of glass and the like subjected to thermal operations liable to deform them.

   The maintenance in a vertical position of sheets or plates of glass subjected to thermal operations which are liable to deform them, such as tempering, is generally carried out by one of the following two methods: or else the the sheet is suspended at isolated points in its upper part using devices consisting of clamps whose jaws penetrate into notches made in the glass or grip the surface of the glass when it is solid and there sink when it softens, or the sheet is supported on part of its lower and lateral periphery, providing this support

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 tabs that prevent the sheet from moving sideways.

   When the first method is employed, the notches or hollows produced by the jaws of the suspension clamps remain visible, sometimes even, when the glass sheet is heavy enough or when the heat treatment is carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. high, the glass undergoes a more or less pronounced deformation to the right of the suspension points.

   When employing the second method, the glass sheet may warp in the middle region between the support and lateral retention points.

   The present invention relates to a method and a device for supporting sheets or plates of glass and similar material subjected to thermal operations liable to deform them.

   The method according to the invention is remarkable in particular in that it consists in supporting the sheet or plate by its lower edge and in maintaining it in a vertical vertical position by means of two networks / and parallel of taut metal wires, the spacing between the two networks corresponding to the thickness of said sheet or plate so as to prevent it from warping
The device according to the invention is remarkable in particular in that it comprises, in combination, a means for supporting the sheet or plate by its lower edge and two parallel vertical networks of metal wires which are attached by their upper ends to fixed organs and which are separated one,

   from the other at a distance corresponding to the thickness of said sheet or plate while their lower ends are fixed to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 organs that keep them in tension.

   In the accompanying drawing are shown, by way of example, different embodiments of the device according to the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a front view, schematic, of an embodiment.

   Fig. 2 is a transverse, vertical section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a member making it possible to adjust the spacing of the two corresponding conjugate threads of the two networks, and possibly serving as a lower support for the sheet or plate.

   Fig. 4 is a corresponding plan view.

   Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 3.

   Fig. 6 is a view, in elevation, of a member making it possible to adjust the simultaneous separation of several conjugate threads and which can possibly serve as a lower support for the sheet or plate.

   FIG. 7 is a vertical section taken along line 7-7 of FIG. 6.

   FIG. 8 shows, in elevation, another embodiment of the device for supporting the sheet or plate, for connecting the two networks of wires and for attaching to the members which keep them in tension.

   Fig. 9 is a similar view showing a way of connecting the upper ends of the son of the two networks and their attachment to the support.

   According to one of the examples shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the device comprises a horizontal support 2 constituted for example by a section and from which the assembly must be suspended. The vertical core of this profile is pierced with holes 3 in each of which passes a metal wire.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 lique whose ends of the two strands 4,5 are joined by a lower twist 6 and surround, below this twist 6, a metal bar 7 which makes it possible to tension the two networks formed by the strands 4 and 5 of wires .

  Preferably, the device is completed by a blade 8, housed between the two networks 4,5 of wires just below the profile. This blade 8 is fixed to a pivoting pin 9 in bearings 10 and integral with a crank 11.

   The nature of the threads can be any, however they are as thin as possible and preferably made of a material such that their expansion is close to that of the glass or other material to be treated.

   The mode of use is as follows:
Before setting up the sheet (or plate) 1, a we bring the blade 8 in the horizontal position at 8 aa (fig. 2) so as to separate the two networks of wires at 4 and 5, which makes it possible to easily introduce the sheet or plate 1 between these networks and make it rest on the twists 6. When the blade 8 is then brought back to the vertical erased position, the two networks 4.5 stretched by the part 7 approach the sheet 1 that they just touch, the distance between these networks being given by the thickness of the web of the profile 2 or of the blade 8.

   The sheet is thus perfectly maintained laterally and, as it can hardly deviate from its vertical position, the horizontal and transverse component of its weight is very low; the pressure which it undergoes from the metal wires is therefore very reduced.

   Figs. 3 to 5 show an individual connecting device between each strand of one of the networks with the corresponding strand facing the other network. This arrangement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tif which can be used both above and below the sheet, consists of a stirrup 12 between the '8 branches of which is articulated in 13 a wedge 14 which allows to tighten the two strands 4,5 of the wires of the two networks against the branches of the stirrup. The wedge 14 and the opening of the stirrup 12 have a variable thickness longitudinally ensuring variable spacings between the two strands 4, 5 and which correspond to reference lines a, b, c, d, marked on the outer faces of the branches of the stirrup
When the device thus formed is placed below the glass sheet 1,

   as shown in Figures 3 and 5, the sheet may rest by its lower edge on the wedge 14, preferably with the interposition of an insulating part 15. As in the device of Figs.

  1 and 2, the lower ends of the strands 4,5, join in contact with the bar 7 which maintains them in tension.

   Instead of an individual clamping device for each group of two opposite threads or of the two strands of the same thread, the device of FIGS can be used. 6 and 7 consisting of two bars 16 and 17 which clamp several wires 4,5, of the two networks against one or more intermediate bars 18, the thickness of which is at most equal to that of the glass sheet 1. The tightening is effected for example by pins 19 provided with oblong projections 20, 21, which are introduced into a buttonhole 22 of the bars 16, 17, 18 and which are rotated so that the projections 20, 21 exert pressure on the inclined faces of the outer bars 16 and 17.

   The clamping can also be operated (fig. 8) under the action of gravity, by articulated clamps 23 which rest in notches 24 made on the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 outer faces of bars 16 and 17 by pressing these bars against the wires 4, 5 and against the bar 18 and which are held tight by the lower cross member 7.

   Fig. 9 shows another device in which the wires 4 and 5 are attached respectively to their upper part, to two bars 25 and 26 and kept apart from each other, at a distance equal to or slightly less than % sheet thickness by means of a third bar 27, while clamps 28 suspended from the upper cross member 2 clamp together the three bars 25, 26 and 27 by the effect of gravity. In this case, the connection between the lower ends of the son can be ensured as in the device of FIGS. 1 and 2, or in that of figs. 3 and 5.

   Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.
