 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  "Method and devices for bonding hard metal alloys to underlying metals".

   The use of hardened steels in the manufacture of chip removal cutting tools offers the advantage of ensuring a high cutting speed, if the tools are cooled with liquids, without involving the risk of income and softening; however, the resistance of these steels to heat is still limited and does not allow work at high temperatures. It is therefore wisely that we have

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Recently, hard metal alloys have been used for coating cutting tools by removing chips.

   However, for economic reasons and in view of the fragility of these hard metal alloys, such alloys have only been reported on the cutting edge of the tools. In this case, the agglomerated hard metals have been reported, in the form of plates, by brazing, preferably with copper, or by welding, with the interposition of an iron fabric between the body of the tool and the plate. hard metal, the assembly then being heated in an oven and intimately welded, that is to say made compact by hot press welding. However, this procedure does not always ensure with certainty a good fixing of the hard metal on the support.

   The object of the present invention is a process which enables hard metal alloys to be added by drop welding, using an electric arc or a gas torch, which makes it possible to manufacture particularly simple cutting edges. tools or the like, achieving much better adhesion of the hard metal to the underlying metal and, consequently, improved working qualities. The main feature of the new process consists in the use of electrodes of a specific nature for the welding.

   It is customary to provide electrodes intended for electric arc welding with a sheath, thanks to which the elongation, the tenacity in notched bars (proof of resilience) and the ease of forging are notably increased at weld area, especially in boiler and structural steel welds. Known sheaths are generally composed of mineral materials, where mixtures of asbestos, quartz,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 of kaolin, ilmenite, alkaline earth carbonates and the like. In given cases, metallic substances, such as ferrosilicon, aluminum or ferromanganese, can be added to these mixtures in order to avoid the absorption of oxygen or nitrogen.

   The use of hard metal alloy sheathed electrodes, also when it comes to bonding these hard metal alloys to the underlying metal, by electric arc welding, has been found to increase the conductivity. ; Without this precaution, the transformation of the alloys into droplets is very tumultuous. However, the known electrode sheaths do not meet the conditions imposed on the welding of hard metals, above all because, despite good resilience, sufficient hardness is not obtained for the majority of the fields of application.

   In accordance with the invention, this drawback is remedied by providing the electrodes intended for welding hard metals with at least two sheaths of different compositions. The inner layers of the sheath are, for this purpose, formed mainly by metals of the fourth, fifth and sixth main groups of the periodic table, namely titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and / or their carbides, to which can be incorporated, in certain cases, free charcoal in the form of graphite, charcoal powder, etc. .. It is also possible to add mineral constituents, for example lime, calcium silicate, titanium dioxide or the like, in order to improve the combination affinity or the uniform distribution of the alloys.

   The outer layers of the sheath are advantageously constituted by refractory mineral components, such as asbestos, carbonate.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   @ calcium, lime, alumina and similar mineral substances or their mixtures, which makes it possible in particular to obtain a layer of slag on the weld.

   It is advantageous to reduce to the pulverulent state the mixture of the abovementioned substances, which must be added to the different layers of the sheath, with organic or inorganic agglomerates, then to spread it, or to deposit it by spraying. or by immersion. The metal sheaths can be brought in the form of sheets, tubes, etc., optionally by winding strips of sheet metal.

   A double or multiple envelope of this kind clearly increases the electrical stability of the welding arc and makes it possible to significantly improve the bond of the metal to the underlying metal, without the metal structure, composition and compactness of the metal being affected. destroyed. A special advantage lies, on the other hand, in. What the toughness of the metal yields by welding increases, together with its hardness, to a great extent.

   Detailed tests have made it possible to establish that the cutting edges of tools on turning and milling steels, for example, obtained according to the invention using electrodes with double or multiple sheath, have capacities of. significantly better cuts and are suitable for higher working speeds than cutting edges welded with single sheath electrodes of known composition.

   The core of the electrode itself can have any desired composition. Electrodes based on alloys containing carbon but free of iron or low in iron, especially alloys of tungsten, chromium, cobalt, manganese, nickel and similar metals or their carbides, are particularly useful. line in the welding of hard metals; in some cases,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 other substances can be added to them, such as vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, etc.

   The new method is preferably suitable for depositing hard metal alloys on cutting tools by removing chips. In this application, it has been found that it is advantageous to add the hard metal alloys in several layers; preferably, the deepest layer is reported, to a small thickness with a current intensity that is as low as possible and without heating the tool. The following layers are nevertheless welded after the tool has been heated beforehand, to an appropriate temperature of between 400 and 700. Another approach, which has been successfully followed, consists in adding the first layer by autogenous welding.

   In torch welding, the penetration of iron into the hard metal is less intense than with normal strength electric welding, hence the absorption of iron from the underlying metal is smaller. The two processes, electric welding at low current intensity and welding with a torch, aim to attenuate as much as possible the diffusion of iron in the hard metal added. Iron absorption alters the hot hardness of the welded alloy.

   Tools provided with hard metal cutting edges and obtained by this process behave in a manner comparable to that of tools made entirely of hardened steel, but they have the superiority over them which gives them a much greater cutting power. high and significantly better hot hardness.

   Tools of this kind do not lose their excellent cutting power at temperatures of up to 7000 Compared to tools with a hard metal cutting edge attached by brazing, the tools according to the invention still offer the advantage of better heat dissipation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

  In addition, the process which is the subject of the present invention is particularly simple and allows appreciable saving of steel in several cases. One can, for example, return their correct shape by upsetting, to worn turning steels, which is difficult to achieve with hardened steels. This results in a significant saving in the manufacture of tools.

   The metal body of the tools can thus be made of any material of sufficient strength, for example carbon steels; Preferably adopts for the hard metal alloys of specific metals and their carbides, such as tungsten, titanium or molybdenum carbides, with the addition of cobalt, chromium, manganese, nickel, vanadium / etc .. ..

   The example described below will make it clear how a hard metal is applied by electric welding to steel.

   The metal of the tool body, which may be turning steel, is 6011 carbon steel with a strength of 60 to 80 kg / mm2. Its section is adapted to the shape of the turning steel. The hard metal alloy, connected by electric welding, consists, for example, of tungsten, chromium and cobalt and contains about 1.5 to 6% carbon. The first layer of hard metal is welded using an electrode with a diameter of 4 mm and with a current intensity of about 110 to 120 amperes; the following layers will be welded after preheating the turning steel to 4000 with an intensity of 130 to 140 amperes.

   A welding device, which has been found to be suitable for the possible welding of hard metal alloys on turning steels, comprises a support, consisting of:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 for example, by a frame with adjustable inclination, on one side of which is fixed a template. This jig must be made of a material which cannot be welded with iron, for example graphite or copper. It is provided with notches whose shape corresponds to that of welding tools, possibly turning steels. The steels are placed in the frame so that their front part is engaged in a corresponding notch of the jig, taking care to arrange horizontally, as far as possible, the surface of the underlying metal, on which the hard metal alloy must be reported.

   The frame is suitably connected to another support or similar member capable of holding the tools in such a way that it is also possible to completely weld any gaps existing at the points of contact between the deepest layer of hard metal and the metal of the body. tool, after having turned this tool over and made its previous surface horizontal.

   The description which will follow, with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the peculiarities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being of course included. of it.

   FIG. 1 is a side view of a device arranged as a welding table.

   Figure 2 is a top view of this device.

   The installation comprises a pillar 1, supporting a height-adjustable platform 2. Wing nuts 3 ensure a removable fixing, on the plate 2, of a plate 4 provided, on one side, with two chairs for bearings 5. These chairs receive the two pins 6 of a frame 7. You can adjust the height of the position of the frame 7, using a rod 8 with handwheel 9, on the side opposite the chairs 5.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

  A set screw 10 with handle 11 is also provided in one of the chairs 5 to prevent the frame 7 from leaving the rod 8.

   A template 12 is fixed, by screws 13 on the frame 7, laterally to the journals 6. This template 12 is made of copper, in accordance with the intended purpose and has the shape of an elongated and flat bloo, exhibiting a large number of notches 14 in its long narrow faces. These notches 14 are a little larger than the widths of the cutting edges of turning tools, which are, for example, standardized, so that the heads of the tools can be engaged therein.

    The frame still carries a spacer 15; screw terminal 18, at the foot of pillar 1, allows the fixing of the current supply cable.

   FIG. 2 illustrates the mode of use of the welding device by indicating, in dotted lines, a turning steel 16 in the position of use. The head of the turning steel is located in a corresponding notch of the jig 12. The obliquity of the frame 7 is determined so that the upper face of the steel is completely horizontal at the place of the weld.

   A thin coil of hard metal is then welded onto the head of the unheated steel tool. The steel is then heated to between 500 and 700 and new layers are welded onto the tool head in the same device.

   As experience shows, there is easily a gap at the edge of the tool between the underlying metal and the hard metal alloy, when welding the first layer to the steel head. To allow this gap to be closed, the piece of steel is turned end to end, after welding the other hard metal layers and placed on the frame 1 and the spacer 15 in the designated position.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 at 17 in FIG. 1 (apparent outline of the tool in dotted lines). By means of the height adjustment rod 8, the frame 9 is adjusted to place the front face of the steel in an exactly horizontal position and the remaining gap is welded with hard metal alloy.

   Support devices can be established analogously for tools other than turning steels, for example, milling tools; It is essential for the latter to surround the places to be welded with templates-gauges made of material that cannot be welded with the iron.

   A particular advantage of cutting tools by removing chips with hard metal layers attached by electric arc welding is the following: it is perfectly possible to carry out subsequent sharpening, resulting in less wear on the grinding wheels and s 'performing faster than is achieved at elevated temperature. In this operation, the tool is first sharpened at a high temperature, preferably between 700 and 1000, and then the cold sharpening is finished.

   The reduced grinding wheel wear inherent in hot sharpening allows the use of softer and cheaper abrasives, for example corundum grinding wheels instead of silicon carbide grinding wheels.

   In addition, the hot sharpening process is significantly shorter in duration than ordinary cold sharpening.

  The tool can be brought up to a high temperature and sharpened under these conditions without any danger, thanks to the strong fixation achieved by welding the hard metal to the underlying metal.

   It is obvious that modifications of details can be made to the method which has just been described without thereby departing from the scope of the invention.
