<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"A method of improving the resistance to surface oxidation of iron-chromium-aluminum alloys."
The present invention relates to a method of improving the resistance to surface oxidation (formation of scale) of iron-chromium-aluminum alloys: These alloys are known to be resistant to surface oxidation. The upper Cr content is about 30%, the Al content is about 15%, while the lower Cr and Al content limits are about 1%.
Tests carried out in a wide field have shown that the resistance to surface oxidation of these alloys, already showing a certain resistance in this direction, can still be increased in quite extraordinary proportions when these alloys
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
contain a small adaition of titanium.
The effect of titanium was first determined with respect to alloys of the above type containing titanium, but it has, however, been found that? the same or substantially the increase in the resistance to surface oxidation was obtained when, in the finished alloy to which titanium had been added, only the presence of traces of titanium could be detected, or even when the presence of titanium could no longer be detected.
It should be inferred from this finding that the effect of adding titanium is based on a reaction which takes place in the bath of metal in fusion and which is of the type usually referred to as deoxidation reaction.
It is known that the resistance to surface oxidation of an alloy is determined by measuring the time, called service life, during which a wire diameter of 0.5 @@@ resists. Lar example raised by an electric current at a determined temperature until it is completely burnt. This time measured in Hours is called the resistance index.
The table below, reproducing such measurement results, shows the extreme superiority of the alloys deoxidized using Ti.

While Nos. 1 and 3, which have not been subjected to any deoxidation within the meaning of the invention, have, at 1.050 C, a lifetime of about 30 or 100 hours, the steels of the same composition having been deoxidized with 'titanium aid (Nos. 2 and 4) have their lifespan multiplied by three to twelve approximately. Of course, it is also possible to work with an excess of titanium, which, as experience has shown, is not harmful. The presence of other metals also does not affect the deoxidation effect, which is surprising.
It is possible, for example, to add Ta or Nb separately or simultaneously, for example, in a total proportion which can reach 10%.
As shown in Example 5, the high service life is maintained, however the hot fastness is increased by about 100%, which is of great importance for the practical use of this alloy brought to the highest level. resistance to surface oxidation by the process according to the invention.
The process according to the invention is, for example, implemented as follows: iron is melted with chromium and aluminum in an induction furnace and the temperature of the bath is fixed at the casting temperature; the titanium is then introduced rapidly, preferably in the form of a preliminary alloy, and an effort is made to obtain a rapid mixing, the induction furnace immediately being switched on again / or else, when no furnace is available induction, by intense mechanical stirring. The metallurgical reaction requires only a short time, so that it is possible to carry out the casting immediately after the operation.
