Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

     Si toute la quantité d'étain ne devait pas être sulfurée dans le four et extraite de celui-ci la scorie,sortant du/four.- contient de l'étain principalement sous forme de composés oxygènes Dans ce cas,on peut souffler dans la scorie,par exemple dans l'avant creuset, de l'H2S ou traiter la scorie contenant encore du sulfure de fer par des gaz de gazogène, du poussier de char-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

  The subject of a patent application filed in NORWAY., The
May 16, 1938 in the name above.

   It is already known to obtain tin from poor ores, slags and the like, which for example contain 40% tin or even less, by melting the tin-containing materials with about 50%. of coke and addition of gypsum in a vertical furnace (blast furnace) from which a product rich in tin is removed. But this process is extremely expensive owing to the very high use of lumpy coke, especially in the vicinity of mines where the proper fuel is generally very expensive.

   Due to the low tin content, the ore transport costs are, on the other hand, too high to obtain unprepared transport to the processing plant. In addition,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 enrichment is often difficult and expensive due to the complicated composition of the ore.

   Poor tin ores have very diverse compositions. Their tin content, which is usually found as SnO2, is very variable. The ores usually contain a little pyrite, which is removed in the usual processes by flotation, and also other sulphides. The pyrite content can sometimes be significant. In addition, ores almost always contain varying amounts of free silica and often iron oxides.

   The present invention relates to a process which makes it possible to extract, by volatilization, tin from the ore without much prior preparation and then to obtain tin in the form of a rich compound, and this without addition or only. with little addition of a combustible material containing carbon.

   This is achieved by using the components of the ore and mainly pyrite, to obtain the calories necessary for the execution of the process, and at the same time the tin is brought to the state of a volatile combination. In case the sulphide content of the ore is too low, suitable sulphides are added, which are usually inexpensive in mining areas, and also free silica in case the ore contains too little.

   The process consists in melting the material containing the tin, and if necessary suitable additions of sulphides, for example pyrites, free silica and, optionally, other fluxes, in a vertical furnace (blast furnace) whose opening of the throat is closed and in the lower part of which air is blown, the composition of the charge and the quantity of air blown in being determined so as to obtain release of most of the tin in the form of vapors of sulfurized tin, with the gases and, at the same time, the number of calories required to carry out the process.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   In the event that the composition of the tin ores in the mine often changes, certain difficulties are encountered in controlling the smelting operation so that disturbances in the operation do not occur or are minor.

  In this case, it has been found to be advantageous to add to the feed small quantities of an arbon-containing fuel, for example 3 to 7% coal or coke, whereby the necessary calories are obtained for carry out the process completely without cloudiness.

   If the charge contains sufficient quantities of pyrite, the following can be done:
When the furnace charge, possibly heated before charging, is introduced into the upper part of the furnace, it is carried by the gases coming from the bottom of the furnace to a temperature of 600 to 700, and part of the sulfur in the pyrite begins. then Distill. If it is in the charge of iron oxide, it is transformed into FeS with simultaneous formation of SO2,
A little lower in the furnace the temperature is higher, and the sulphides in the feed then begin to react with the tin compounds, the latter alloying with the sulfur and forming proto-tin sulphide and , optionally, small amounts of tin disulfide.

   If the temperature rises further, the formation of sulphides is greater and the sulphide tin vaporizes.

  E 1000-1050 vaporization is generally complete. The vaporized sulfurized tin is precipitated outside the furnace by cooling and is rewashed in the dust chambers or in other apparatus. In the event that part of the sulfurized tin is burnt by the blown air, SnO2 is formed, which is entrained by the gases and can be collected in the same way.

   Among the other components of the charge, FeS begins to melt at around 900, sinks downwards and soon oxidizes for the most part on the nozzles under the action of the blown air. In this place, when the oven is operating normally, a skeleton of the load quarto is formed, called the hearth.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

  By oxidation, followed by a strong release of heat, SO2 is formed, which rises upwards and FeO, which momentarily combines with the SiO2 of the quartz. The other sulphides are also partly oxidized in an analogous manner. The ferrosilicate formed combines with the materials present, which must form the slag, and forms a series which flows out of the furnace with the unoxidized metal sulphides (stone) through a front crucible where the slag and the stones separate. from each other.

   The gases rising from the hearth heat the charges, which are above, sufficiently strongly that the reactions indicated above can take place. Sulfur dioxide partially reacts with metal sulphides (FeS) to form metal oxides and elemental sulfur. If a fuel containing carbon, preferably in small pieces, is added to the feed, SO2 is also reduced by the latter.

  The sulfur vapors thus produced and the hydrogen sulphide, possibly formed by the action of the humidity of the air, could also act at the high temperature prevailing in the furnace on the tin by sulphurizing it.

   As indicated above, the sulfurized tin leaves the furnace as vapors with the other gases. In order to avoid condensation and precipitation of the sulfurized ethanol in the upper part of the furnace, the operation of the latter is regulated in such a way that the gases escape at high temperature, for example from 800 to 1000. . To obtain this result, you must work at a low loading height and you can also preheat the load or part of it before entering the oven:

     If all the quantity of tin should not be sulphurized in the furnace and extracted from it the slag, leaving the / furnace - contains tin mainly in the form of oxygen compounds In this case, it is possible to blow into the slag, for example in the front crucible, with H2S or treat the slag still containing iron sulphide with gasifier gases, coal dust

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 good or oil * Under these conditions, the tin will sulfurize and volatilize and can be collected with the rest.

   But we obviously seek afterwards to compose the charges and guide the operation of the furnace so that as little tin as possible is scorified at the temperature produced in the hearth,
In the event that the tin ore contains substantial amounts of slag oxide compounds it is often advantageous to remove them before processing. For this purpose, the ore is crushed and treated in a suitable apparatus with a reducing gas, for example gasifier gas at about 700-750, so that the greater part of the ferric oxide is transformed into
 EMI5.1
 , magnetite (Fe30 ').

   By choosing suitably the temperature, the composition and the duration of the treatment, one manages not to push the reduction excessively, because otherwise, FeO is also formed, which is not magnetic. - The reduced element is subjected to a magnetic treatment, which removes the magnetite.

   The tin ore, freed of a large part of iron oxides, is added in quantities suitable for the subsequent smelting operation of quartz, pyrite, and possibly other fluxes, put into briquettes and briquettes. , after drying or hardening, are melted in the oven,
The tin sulphide obtained according to the present process is of great value and suitable for obtaining metallic tin or its compounds.
