Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

pre-alloy for obtaining magnesium alloys.
The present invention relates to a pre-alloy for obtaining magnesium alloys.
The magnesium alloys known to date for spray casting do not exhibit any appreciable tensile strength and leave something to be desired as regards the elongation, so that their possibilities of application are greatly limited. In order to avoid these defects, attempts have been made to increase the tensile strength, and the elongation, by adding to these alloys, for example, cadmium, titanium and by greatly increasing - above 12% - the final aluminum content. these proposals did not yield the expected results.
Likewise, the use of pre-alloys has not resulted in any appreciable improvement in the final alloy, owing to the lack of proper composition of these pre-alloys. It was found that the shortcomings presented so far by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Known magnesium alloys, intended for spray casting, are avoided when adding to the magnesium, depending on the envisaged application, for example from 3 to 14% of pre-alloy, having for example the following composition:
1. Aluminum 44- 30%
2. Zinc 24.5 - 41%
3. Manganese 2 - 4%
4. Nickel 3.5 - 8%
5. Magnesium 26 - 17%
Elements 1 and 2, 3 and 4, corresponding to each other, may be present in increasing or decreasing percentages.
Likewise, the percentage of this pre-alloy, relative to the final alloy, can be larger or smaller, the properties of this final alloy changing, with regard to tensile strength, independently of the elongation.
With respect to the alloys known for projection casting, the use of the pre-alloy according to the invention gives rise to a magnesium alloy with tensile strength and with an elongation coefficient much greater than up to 'here ; these increased properties can also be of interest for other applications.
In addition, it becomes possible, by modifying the percentage of the elements of the pre-alloy and their percentage relative to the final product, to determine beforehand the characteristics of the final alloy.
Thus, for example, a greater tensile strength will be obtained as the percentage of the pre-alloy increases.
The elongation can be increased for example by increasing the percentage of elements 1 and 2, and decreasing the percentage of element 4.
