 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Fig. 3 en est une vue plus complète, partie en coupe, prise perpendiculairement au plan de la Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 en est une coupe transversale suivant la ligne V-V de la Fig. 4 ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 - Fig. 6 est une vue en plan d'une variante;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  Improvements to airplanes.

   This invention relates to airplanes.

   It has already been proposed to use, for airplanes, irreversible control devices to actuate ailerons or other control surfaces, in order to ensure that these surfaces retain a desired position when the pilot leaves the maneuvering member.

   Until now, the use of these devices has involved the disadvantage that the pilot is unable to appreciate the intensity and direction of the forces exerted by the air on the surfaces thus controlled, as long as it does not act on the actuator to move it in either direction.

   In addition, during these maneuvers, the sensations vary.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 resistance or pressure which the pilot experiences are generally made inaccurate by friction and play in the transmissions; For example, the play due to the wear of the hinges or the bearing surfaces prevents the immediate transmission of forces and it follows that the pilot acts on the controls in a clashed manner and that, moreover, if these controls are left to them- Even for some reason, in certain positions the aircraft could vibrate, making it unstable.

   The object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement with which an irreversible control device can be used without being exposed to the aforementioned drawbacks.

   To this end, according to the present invention, the rudder surface controlled by means of the irreversible control device is combined with an auxiliary surface controlled by means of a reversible control device, the arrangement being such. that the auxiliary surface can be used to inform the pilot of the forces acting on the rudder surface controlled by the irreversible control device.

   The irreversible controller may include an irreversible hinge mechanism for connecting one of the rudder surfaces to a fixed part of the aircraft, and the reversible controller may include a reversible hinge mechanism for connecting the auxiliary surface. to a fixed part of the aircraft.

   In another arrangement, the irreversible and reversible mechanisms can be supported on a fixed part of the airplane and can be positively connected to the sur- @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 faces to be controlled by rod and lever devices or similar mechanical devices.

   The irreversible device, which may or may not act as a hinge, may consist of a nut that can be moved on a screw, the pitch of the nut and of the screw being chosen so as to ensure irreversibility.

   The reversible device can be constituted by a mechanism other than a hinge; for example, it may simply be a pivot lever such as an elbow lever.

   The reversible and irreversible control devices can be operated by a common actuator by means of a rod and lever transmission. This transmission can be constituted by a lever directly connected, at different points, to the irreversible and reversible control devices, so that different moments are exerted on the two control devices, the amplitudes of the movements. of tilting of the two surfaces controlled by these devices being varied accordingly.

   The invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the rear end of the fuselage of an aircraft;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of an irreversible hinge mechanism and
Fig. 3 is a more complete view, partly in section, taken perpendicular to the plane of FIG. 2;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a reversible hinge mechanism and
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 4;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 - Fig. 6 is a plan view of a variant;
Fig. 7 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of the irreversible control employed in the arrangement of FIG. 6, and
Fig. 8 is a section taken along the line VIII-VIII of FIG. 7.

   In Figs. 1 to 5, the reference numeral 1 designates the rear end of the fuselage of an aircraft, 2 designates the rear horizontal plane and 3 designates the main elevator which consists of two elements arranged on either side. of the fuselage 1. Each element of the elevator 3 is articulated on a bar 2 'supported on the plane 2, by means of an irreversible device such as for example the irreversible hinge mechanism 5 which the applicant has fully described and represented. in his patent n. 427.906.

   The essential characteristics of the construction of the hinge 5 are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5. In short, it consists of a screw 6 arranged to rotate under the action of a rack 7 operable from the cockpit of the airplane and meshing with a pinion 8 fixed to the screw; a nut 9 can move along the length of the screw when it is rotated and this nut actuates two crank knobs 10, 11 rigidly connected respectively to two arms 12 connected in turn to the elevator 3. The , the thread pitch of the screw and the nut is chosen so as to constitute an irreversible device.

   The racks 7 of the two hinge mechanisms are each connected to operating members, arranged in the cockpit, by two transmissions each constituted by a rod 13 slidably mounted in the cockpit.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 bearings 14-14, an angled lever 15 pivotally mounted at 16, and a rod 17 connected to the aforementioned actuator arranged in the cockpit.

   It is clear that a longitudinal displacement of the rods 13 causes the two elements 3, 3 of the elevator to tilt around the axes of their hinges. As the two hinged mechanisms are irreversible, the elements 3, 3 of the elevator rudder cannot produce a displacement of the nut on the screw and, consequently, cannot move the actuator placed at the station. piloting.

   According to the invention, there is mounted at each outer end of the two surfaces 3, 3 an auxiliary or detecting surface 18. These two surfaces 18 are articulated to the bar 2 'of the plane 2 by a reversible device as for example. The reversible hinge mechanism 19, the construction of which has been described in detail by the applicant in his patent no. 428,856.

   The essential features of the construction of such a hinge are illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings. In short, it consists of a control lever 24 which, when actuated, rotates a shaft 25 having at its inner end a ball-tipped crank arm 26, and a second shaft 27 disposed perpendicular to the shaft. shaft 25 and also provided with a ball-tipped crank arm 28. Shaft 27 constitutes the pivot of articulation for the sensing surface 18 and it comprises near its ends two arms 29 intended to be connected to the surface 18.

   The spherical ends of the crank arms 26, 28 are interconnected by a member 30 which contains two spherical bearings - 31, 32, having the form of plungers loaded by a spring,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 which maintain one of the spherical ends tightened against a spherical pad 33 disposed at the other end, this pad being mounted in an adjustable manner in the member 30 to vary the pressure exerted by the plungers on the spherical ends. A rotation of the shaft 25 thus produces a corresponding rotation of the shaft 27. The control levers 24 of the two hinge mechanisms 19 are each connected by a rod 34 for example to one of the levers 15, respectively at points 35, 35 .

   It is clear that thanks to the reversible hinges
19,19, the pressures acting on the auxiliary surfaces
18,18, pressures which are similar, or proportional, to those acting on the main surfaces 3, 3, are transmitted to the control member of the cockpit, according to a ratio depending on the reduction produced between the rack and the pinion of the hinge and also of the position of the points 35 where the rods are connected to the levers 15.

   The pilot is thus able to appreciate the direction and the intensity of the forces acting on the surfaces 3,
18 and it can thus adjust the position of these surfaces in the most favorable manner, at any useful moment, while retaining the advantages of an irreversible control.

   Figs. 6 to 8 show how the invention can be carried out using irreversible and reversible devices which do not act as hinges between the surfaces of the elevator and the aft plane. In these figures, two irreversible devices 40 are mounted inside the plane 2 on either side of the fuselage. The construction of these irreversible devices is shown in detail in FIG. 7 where 41 is a nut mounted to be moved along the length of a screw 42 and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 comprising in one of its sides a groove 43 in which is slidably engaged one end of an angled lever 45 pivotally mounted.

   The screw 42 is arranged to rotate under the action of a bevel gear 46 which is driven by a bevel gear 47 pinned or otherwise rigidly fixed to a spur gear 48 arranged to be driven by a rack 49.

   As shown in Fig. 8, the other end of the angled lever 45 is connected by a rod 51 to a vertical lever 52 connected to the elevator 3.

   As shown in Fig. 6, each rack 49 is attached to or is part of a rod 50, and one end of this rod is connected to an elbow lever 53, while its other end is connected to an elbow lever 54 pivotally mounted in a bracket. 55 and constituting the reversible control. The other end of the lever 54 is connected by a rod 56 to a vertical lever 57 connected to the surface 18, analogously to the rod 51 and to the lever 52 shown in FIG. 8.

   Both the reversible device and the irreversible device are actuated from the cockpit of the aircraft by means of a transmission constituted by the rods 58, 58 connected respectively to the two bent levers 53, 53.

   It is understood that the invention is not limited in any way to the special construction of the reversible and irreversible devices shown in the drawings, and that these devices can be replaced by equivalent mechanisms. These mechanisms will most often be placed in the fixed part of the airplane, immediately in front of the moving surface, and they will generally constitute an intermediate shaft movement with or without reduction,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 their action being transmitted by rotation around axes having any desired direction.

   The amplitudes of the tilting movements of the two rudder surfaces 3 and 18 can be different from each other and they can vary, for example, according to the position of the point of articulation 35 of the lever 15 or in any other way.

   Each of the steering surfaces 3 and 18 can, if necessary, consist of several mobile surfaces, the tilting amplitudes of which can be equal or different.

   The device forming the subject of the invention can equally well be applied to rudders, ailerons, flaps and other moving surfaces of the airplane.

   In all cases, the differences in pressure exerted on the auxiliary or sensing surfaces such as 18 are transmitted to the pilot, who will always have to make an effort to overcome the pressure, even if there is play in the intermediate shaft actuating the main control surface 3 irreversibly controlled.

   An irreversible device comprising a screw and nut transmission has been described in the foregoing, but it is obvious that the desired irreversibility can be obtained, without departing from the scope of the invention, by other means, by for example using an electric motor, using a valve or valve of a hydraulic or pneumatic transmission or by similar means.

   It is also evident that the different movable surfaces could be balanced.
