 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

   Profondeur du passage 46   0,0076   cms. à
0,0102 cms

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

  Improvements to sound translators
The present invention relates to sound translators and relates more particularly to improvements and methods of manufacturing telephone receivers of the permanent magnet type.

   According to the invention a sound translator member is provided in which the elements constituting the magnetic field are mounted on a substantially non-magnetic but conductive support which is coupled with the magnetic circuit of the elements creating the field such that part of the AC component of the flux developed during operation of the device, either

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 prevented from being in connection with the frame.

   The invention will be better understood from the following description of an embodiment of the invention shown on the plans by Figures 1 to 6. Figure 1 is a side elevational view shown in section of a translator member. of his. Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the front part of the member shown in fig, 1 with the diaphragm removed. Fig. 3 is a developed view showing the method of mounting the member shown in fig, 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of some of the elements shown in Figs.

  1 and 3, and fig. 6 schematically represents the method of magnetization of the permanent magnet forming part of the elements of the magnetic field of the organ shown in FIG. 1. A sound translator organ is shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 in the form of a telephone receiver which comprises a casing 10 in magnetic form but in the form of a bowl constructed of non-conductive material such as aluminum for example and in which are mounted the elements creating the magnetic field of l 'device. The edge of the housing 10 is provided with an outer rim 11 formed integrally with a ring 12, the outer surface of which is planar to serve as a support surface for the diaphragm 13 of the receiver.

   Preferably the diaphragm 13 has a thickness of approximately 0.020 centimeters and is constructed of a magnetic material, such as for example silicon steel, having a high permeability to alternating currents.

  The elements of the magnetic field comprise a pair of pole pieces 14 and 15, on which are wound the coils 16 and 17 of the receiver receiving the signal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 current at voice frequency, and a permanent magnet 18 in the form of a bar which together with the diaphragm 13 and the pole pieces 14 and 15 form a substantially closed magnetic circuit interrupted only by the narrow air gap existing between the pole faces of the pieces 14 and 15 and the diaphragm 13, The pole pieces 14 and 15 are provided with external extensions 14a and 15a respectively which fit perfectly into the openings 19 and 20 made in the bottom of the housing 10, and which protrude from the housing 10 to re - see the permanent magnet 18.

     In order to keep the magnet 18 between the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces, the upper corners, and more particularly the edges, of the electromagnet are biased as shown. at 18a and 18b, and the upper part of the corners of the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces are curved to rest on the biased edges of the magnet as shown in FIG. 5. Preferably the length of the bar is slightly greater than the distance between the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces so that the opposite faces of the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces are firmly on the faces of the pole pieces. magnet to obtain a low reluctance seal between the pole pieces and the magnet.

  It should be noted that the type of assembly just described serves to hold the magnet 18 to prevent it from moving in any direction and therefore this magnet is held fixedly in place when the device assembly is complete.

   The magnet 18 is preferably made of an alloy composed of 24 - 26% nickel, 11 - 13% aluminum and 61 - 65% iron, such as, for example, the alloy known under the name of Alnic; while the pear pieces

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 14 and 15 are preferably made of an alloy comprising approximately 45% nickel and 55% iron such as for example the alloy known under the name of "Allegheny Electric Metal". When it is made of the "Alnic" alloy, the magnet 18 after magnetization has a coercive force of more than 400 oersteds and an energy of more than 1 x 106 ergs per cc, this energy being the maximum of the remanence measured in gauss and the coaitive force measured in oersteds.

   The magnetizing winding 16 is wound on the pole piece 14 between the two cheeks 21 and 22 formed by an insulating material and is isolated from the pole piece 14 by a sheet of insulating material 23 which may for example consist of a varnished canvas. The ends of the winding 16 pass / to the outside through holes made in the inner wall of the cheeks 21 and 22 to be attached to the connecting pieces 21a and 22a which are respectively integral with the cheeks 21 and 22 and overflowing in relation to these cheeks. In a similar manner, the winding 17 is wound on the pole piece 15 between the two cheeks 24 and 25 and is isolated from this pole piece 15 by a layer of insulating material 26.

  The ends of this winding pass to the outside through holes made in the internal wall of the cheeks 24 and 25 to be hooked to the connection pieces 24a and 25a forming a body respectively with the cheeks 24 and 25 and protruding from those. -this.

  The two windings 16 and 17 are connected in series by welding together the ends of these windings leading to the connection pieces 22a and 24a. The other two connection pieces extend outwards and are connected to the connection terminals of the device,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 which in the arrangement shown comprises a housing
27 conductor 10 and a U-shaped contact piece, the two branches of which are astride the magnet 18 and fixed to the housing 10. The ends of these branches of the contact piece 27 are bent outwards and provided holes 28a and 28b which correspond to holes 29a and 29b made in the housing 10.

   The contact piece 27 is fixed to the housing 10 by means of rivets 30a and 50b passing through the respective openings 28a, 29a and 28b, 29b, and is isolated from the housing 10 by insulating washers 31a, 31b, 32a and 32b as shown.

   As indicated above, the housing 10 through which the pole piece extensions 14a and 15a pass is tightly coupled to the magnetic circuit of the field creating elements and effectively constitutes a short conductor. circuit surrounding each of the two pole pieces 14 and 15. The tight inductive coupling between the case and the magnetic circuit of the elements creating the field results from the fact that the side walls of the openings 19 and 2D are very well suited to the extensions 14a and 15a pole pieces in order to serve as a support for these elements creating the field and in order to prevent dust and humidity from penetrating inside the box 10.

   With this arrangement, an alternating or undulating flow passing through the pole pieces 14 and 15 and the magnet 18 causes: ¯, necessarily voltages induced in the conductor box 10 so that part of the energy of the alternating current producing the alternating flux is necessarily dissipated by hysteresis and eddy currents in the case. In order to prevent the alternating flow produced during operation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 of the device is bypassed by the box 10, there is provided inside the box an auxiliary path for the flow in order to pass it from one pole piece to another. This auxiliary flow path comprises the projections 14b and 15b forming an integral part of their respective pole pieces 14 and 15, and pointing towards one another.

   The adjacent ends of the protrusions 14b and 15b are separated by an air gap 33 which is proportioned so that the magnet 18 is not effectively short-circuited and that a substantial amount of the permanent flux produced by the magnet 18 either have to pass through the diaphragm 13.

   Preferably this air gap is on the order of 0.159 cm. The pole pieces 14 and 15 are preferably produced by stamping a planar piece and during stamping they are cut with the pins. parts 14b and 15b in which are made several openings 34 and 35, which are used to fix the pole pieces to the housing 10 by means of rivets or bolts 36 and 37 passing through the openings 34 and 35 respectively, and to through the openings 38 and 39 made in the bottom of the housing 10 and spaced to correspond to the openings 34 and 35.

   The diaphragm assembly comprises in addition to the diaphragm 13 an inner plate 40, a bell 41, a support ring 42 and an assembly ring 43.

  The internal plate 40 determines with the diaphragm 13 and the ring 12 a sound chamber close to the internal surface of the diaphragm 13, while the horn determines with the diaphragm 13 a resonance chamber close to the external surface of the diaphragm . The dimensions of the sound chamber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 and the narrowed passages communicating thereto are proportioned such that the peak in the response characteristic of the apparatus produced for the natural vibrational frequency of the diaphragm 15 is substantially reduced so as to flatten the characteristic. response of the device to different frequencies.

  More particularly, the internal plate 40 which is made of a non-magnetic material such as aluminum for example is provided with six openings 44 and a flat ring 45 is mounted on this plate at a certain distance of. so as to determine a relatively long, narrow and narrowed annular passage 46 to communicate between the interior of the housing 10 and the chamber formed between the plate 40 and the diaphragm 13.

   By properly proportioning the size of the holes 44 and the length and width of the narrowed passage 46, the acoustic impedance of the chamber adjacent to the inner surface of the diaphragm 13 can be suitably proportioned to give the effect of The maximum desired mute in the frequency band comprising the natural vibrating frequency of diaphragm 13, which band most easily distorts the response characteristic of the apparatus. The air layer of this chamber serves to artificially increase the rigidity of the diaphragm 13 and thereby improves the reproducibility of the apparatus.

  The following dimensions of the sound chamber and the communicating passages have been found to be the most satisfactory in practice. Chamber diameter 4.275 cms.

  Depth of the chamber 0.076 cms.

  Diameter of the holes 44 0.193 cms.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   Passage depth 46 0.0076 cms. at
0,0102 cms
Ring width 45 0.810 cms. 0. 10102
External diameter of the ring 45 5.667 cms.

   As shown in Fig. 4 the ring 45 is separated from the inner plate 40 by means of thin washers 47 and is mounted on the plate 40 by means of rivets 48 passing through the washers and holes. respective corresponding vertices 49 and 50 provided in the plate 40 and the ring 45. As shown in fig. 3, the openings 49 and 50 through which the fixing rivets 48 pass are flexible so that the assembly including plate 40 and ring 45 are prevented from bending. Plate 40 has a pair of grooves 40a and 40b through which the ends of pole pieces 14 and 15 pass. A transverse groove 40c connecting the two grooves 4oa and 40b is also provided to prevent the circulation of eddy currents in the plate 40.

   The dimensions of the grooves 40a and 40b are substantially larger than the dimensions of the section of the ends of the pole pieces 14 and 15 so that relatively large air gaps are provided between the neighboring surfaces of the pole piece and the plate 40 so that the coupling between the magnetic circuit of the magnetic field elements and the plate 40 is extremely loose and the production of eddy currents in the plate is substantially prevented.

   The horn 41 is provided with a central opening 51 through which the sound waves are transmitted from the resonance chamber to the exterior of the apparatus. Pavilion 41 is also planned

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   with an annular protrusion 52 having a planar upper surface which is combined to act as the opposite lower surface of the annular portion 12 of the housing therebetween to clamp / at the periphery, the diaphragm 13 so that the periphery of this diaphragm 13 is tightened under uniform pressure at all points along its outer circumference.

   Preferably, the dimensions of the outer resonant chamber and passage 51 are proportioned such that the natural vibrating frequency of the chamber is found to be approximately 2,700 cycles per second, hence the response of the mobile system is found to be high due to its constitution up to the frequencies included in the frequency band from 2,400 to 2,800 cycles per second. In order to achieve this response at a higher frequency in the indicated frequency band, it has been found in practice that the following dimensions of the resonance chamber and of the passage 51 are satisfactory:
External diameter of the chamber adjacent to the diaphragm 4.287 cms.

   Maximum depth of the chamber 0.084 cms.

   Passage diameter 51 '0.635 cms.

   Passage depth 51 0.129 cms.

   In the construction of the apparatus described above; the connection terminal 27 is first mounted on the housing 10 in a manner previously indicated, and the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces 14 and 15 are introduced respectively through the openings 19 and 20. The latter operation is carried out when windings 16 and 17 are completely assembled on pole pieces 14 and 15.

  After the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 are introduced through the openings 19 and 20, the magnet 18 which at this moment is not magnetized, is forcibly introduced between the faces of the extensions of the pole pieces, and the extensions are brought by pressure to approach nt the one from the other so that their internal face comes to rest firmly on the pole faces of the magnet 18. Simultaneously, the extensions 14b and 15b of the pole pieces 14 and 15 are brought by pressure against the bottom wall of the magnet. housing 10 and the rivets 36 and 37 are introduced through the openings made in the housing 10 and the pole pieces, and their ends are flattened in the usual way, to rigidly fix the elements creating the field to the housing 10.

   At the same time as the forces indicated above are applied to the pole pieces 14 and 15, the upper parts of the corners of the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces are bent against the biased edges 18a and 18b of the magnet 18. The inner plate 40 is introduced de'force and adapts perfectly to the side walls of the ring 12 to come to rest against the rim formed by the underside of the edge 11 of the housing.

  This operation is carried out when the flat ring 45 is mounted on the plate 40. The internal plate 40 is rigidly held in the annular part 12 of the housing 10 by punching the internal surface of the annular part 12 and pressing it down. points spaced apart along the circumference in the well known manner.

   A sealed joint is also provided between the plate 40 and the ends of the pole faces of the pole pieces 14 and 15 by pouring an insulating compound such as a bakelite cement for example into the space between the poles.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 side walls of the grooves 40a and 40b and the side faces of the pole pieces 14 and 15 to ensure that the muffling chamber only matches with the interior of the housing 10 through the narrow passage 46 described above. -above.

   The diaphragm 13 is then clamped between the clamping surfaces of the two annular parts 12 and 52 and the retaining ring 43 as well as the ring 42 are introduced in a telescopic manner on the bell 41 until the flange 43a s 'engages on the threaded part of the bell 41, from which it follows that the rim of the retaining ring 43 is bent as indicated at 43b to rest on the lower part of the rim 11 of the' housing 10.

   The final step in the construction of the apparatus is that of the magnetization of the magnet 18. To this end, as shown in fig. 6, the assembled apparatus is placed such that the magnet 18 is between the poles 53a and 53b of an electromagnet 53 having its winding 54 connected through the contacts of a switch 55 to a current source. continuous, not shown, but having its positive and negative terminals connected to the terminals 56. In order to accelerate the magnetization, the poles 533. and 53b of the electromagnet 53 are provided with cut-out parts 57a and 57b in which the branches of the U-shaped contact piece 27 and the rivet heads 30a and 30b can pass.

   By this arrangement, the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces can be brought very close to the pole faces respectively of the poles 53b and 53a so that a minimum of leakage flow occurs. When the magnet 18 is completely magnetized, the last step in the construction of the apparatus is completed and the apparatus is ready for use.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

In the operation of the apparatus described and combined in the manner indicated above, an attractive force is normally exerted on the diaphragm 13 due to the flux produced by the magnetic field developed by the magnet 18. Because of the gap length @ 33 Magnet 18 is not short-circuited and a significant portion of the flux passes through diaphragm 13.

   When the incoming signaling currents flow through the windings 16 and 17 for the voice frequencies, the permanent flux is increased and decreased in the usual way according to the variations of the signaling currents. The variations in the flux passing through the pole pieces 14 and 15 produce internal voltages.
10 picks in the tightly coupled / conductive housing and the resulting currents flowing cause back-electromotive forces to arise which oppose changes in flux in the usual manner.

   Consequently, the reluctance of the part of the magnetic circuit comprising the magnet 18 and the extensions 14a and 15a of the pole pieces is effectively increased so that most of the AC component of the flux passes through the auxiliary path. described above and comprising the protrusions 14b and 15b of the pole pieces and is therefore not derived by the housing 10. As a result, only a small part of the energy of the signal currents is dissipated by hysteresis and eddy current. in the box 10.

   The variations in the flux passing through the diaphragm 13 cause this diaphragm to vibrate in the usual manner so that sound waves are transmitted through the opening 31 to the exterior of the horn 41 and the existence of the internal chamber.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 The damping rate determined by plate 40 prevents excessive response of diaphragm 13 at frequencies approaching the natural vibrating frequency of the diaphragm. The existence of the resonance chamber determined by horn 41 enhances the response frequency of the mobile system to frequencies in the upper part of the operating band. Therefore a substantially flat and specific response characteristic of reproductive federability is obtained.
