<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Process of bituminous metal parts and resulting parts.
It is known to cover metal parts made of steel or other metal or alloy with a coating of bitumen or similar coating. According to known methods, these parts to be covered are immersed in a bitumen bath having the composition and having the characteristics that the film which remains on these parts at the end of the operation must have.
To obtain a satisfactory coating under these conditions, it is necessary to heat the bitumen bath and the parts to a temperature of approximately 220 C.
Such heating has serious drawbacks: it considerably increases the risk of fire in the installation; it causes a fairly rapid thickening of the bitumen as a result of chemical transformations and therefore @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a noticeable deterioration of its qualities; finally, it entails a fairly considerable expenditure of fuel and requires bulky and expensive installations when it is desired to preheat a large tonnage of parts.
These drawbacks and in particular the dangers of fire can, it is true, be reduced by the use of steam heating, but this heating is only possible with significant overheating, and poor thermal efficiency.
Moreover, the drainage of the parts at the exit of the bath is made difficult by the speed of solidification of the bitumen and one is exposed to excess thicknesses of the coating. This drawback is particularly marked for the asphalting of hollow parts of great length, such as pipes, in which the excess bitumen must flow out at ambient temperature over a long distance without solidifying.
The subject of the invention is a process for bituminating any parts which makes it possible to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks and which is remarkable in particular in that it consists in adding to the molten bath of bitumen or similar coating products that are more volatile and likely to mix with said coating to make the bath more fluid, thereby reducing the temperature required for soaking.
The products adopted must exhibit, for a given working temperature, sufficient volatility for them to be eliminated during draining thanks to their own heat and to that of the parts to which they have been applied. This volatility must not however be excessive, otherwise it would cause
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
significant losses by evaporation which would necessitate new additions of product.
Finally and in particular when bitumen or similar coating is to be applied to pipes, the dilution products must not contain residues liable to remain included in the bitumen and give any flavor or odor to the circulating water. normally in pipelines, the Applicant Company has observed that the dilution products can be constituted, for example, by oils from the distillation of petroleum or coal tar or by-products of the manufacture of semi-coke, all of these products being capable of constituting homogeneous mixtures with bitumen and similar coatings.
These mixtures are obtained very easily by stirring.
By way of example, the anthracene coal tar oil can be used very advantageously as a fluidifying product, by virtue of which the "dip" bituminization is carried out under excellent conditions at a temperature between 125 and 145 ° C. for an oil addition of
8 to 12%.
Of course, it is possible to use any other substance having physical properties and in particular a suitable volatility, and capable of forming a mixture with the bitumen.
Of course, the process is applicable either by heating both the bitumen bath and the parts to be coated, or simply by heating the bath, the duration of the soaking then being such that the parts come into contact with the coating. bath at the appropriate temperature or vice versa.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The process according to the invention therefore makes it possible, by a sufficient addition of fluidizing product, to eliminate one of the heating systems (of the bath or of the rooms) and thus to considerably simplify the installations.
