  Thermostat.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Figs.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

  Thermostat.

   This invention relates to thermostats and more particularly relates to a method for controlling the operations of the bimetallic element of a bi-metallic click-acting thermostat.

   The main object of the invention is to provide a heat sensitive iron thermostat which is capable of operating under a very small difference in temperature.

   The invention essentially consists of a thermostat comprising a bimetallic heat sensitive element and a

 adjustment piece which has elastic parts holding the bimetallic element elastically engaged at all times.

   In order that the invention may be understood more clearly and so that it may be easily carried out, there will be described hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings, only by way of example, a preferred structural form which may be taken. invention.

Figs. 15 and 16 are respectively a top view and a side view of the bimetallic element and its mount, and
Fig. 17 is a perspective view, on a larger scale, of the mobile contact equipment.

   The drawings show a bimetallic thermostat 10 comprising a support or base 12 of irregular shape; a bimetallic heat sensitive element 14; a set of movable contacts 16 rigidly attached to the free end of the bimetallic element and isolated from it; fixed contacts
18 rigidly attached to the base 12 and isolated from it, which are arranged so as to be able to be associated, for the purpose of their operation, to the set of movable contacts 16; an intermediate adjustment piece 20 which resiliently engages by snap-action the bimetallic element 14 so as to constitute a fulcrum for it; an adjustment member .22 for adjusting the operation of the bimetallic element 14 and of the assembly of movable contacts 16.

   In the present example, the base 12 is made of a single sheet. However, it is clear that this base can also consist of several parts or be molded by means of a phenolic resinous material or else be made in any other desired manner. The pedestal 12 includes, in the present example, an upper horizontal support rim or shelf 30 extending forward or outward.

   There are further provided on the plinth two forward or outwardly extending legs 32 which are arranged substantially parallel to the upper main flange 30 and which serve to rigidly attach the plinth 12 to the sole of the base. iron or other suitable apparatus, and a separate tab 34 projecting forward or outward cooperates with the bimetallic member 14 to limit downward movement thereof.

   The main flange 30 has a tapped hole @

 median 36 arranged vertically, which receives the adjustment member 22, several holes 38 drilled in one of its ends to rigidly attach to the rim the adjustment part 20, several holes 38 substantially L-shaped to allow the descending finger 76 of the adjustment piece to pass through the rim, and several holes 40 drilled in the other end of the rim to receive the fixed contacts 18. The feet or support elements 32 are drilled with central holes 42 allowing them to be connected directly to the rim. the soleplate of the iron to ensure good heat transmission between them, as shown in Fig.l.

   In addition, the left foot 32 is drilled from bottom to top with a shoulder hole 43 to easily accommodate the rivet 54 supporting the bimetallic element.

   The bimetallic element 14 sensitive to heat (see also Fig. 15) consists, in the present example, by a one-piece bimetallic strip comprising a middle strip 44, two outer strips 46 and two ends 48 and 50, all formed with the interposition of slits 58 arranged laterally. It is clear that, if desired, the bimetallic element 14 can be constructed by means of several parts so as to constitute a member which, functionally, is in one piece, in substance like that described above. above. The median strip 44 comprises transverse notches 52 arranged substantially at its midpoint, to cooperate with the adjustment part 20, in substance as described below.

   The end 50 has a rivet 54 which is rigidly attached thereto and which permits the bimetallic element 14 to be rigidly attached to the base 12 without changing the preestablished thermal characteristics of this element.

  The bimetallic element 14 is thus placed in thermal bond

 direct with the sole 45 of an iron or the like, as shown in Fig.l. In the outer bands 46 of the preferred bimetallic element 14 may be formed a number of zig-zag folds 56. These zig-zag folds or deformations are produced to impart to the bimetallic element the effect of. a knee brace acting by clicking. A hole 60 is drilled in the end 48 of the bimetallic element 14 to rigidly attach the contact assembly 16 thereto, in substance as described below.

   As shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 17, the movable contact assembly 16 comprises, in the present example, a support bracket 62 and a contact plate 64 which is flexibly attached thereto. Support bracket
62 has a substantially U-shape with raised side branches 68 and a base 69, as shown in FIG. 6. Primarily, the raised branches 68 are bent slightly outward to allow for there. easily assemble the contact plate 64, as described below. Hourglass-shaped holes 66 are drilled in the raised branches 68 of the U-shaped bracket 62 to cooperate with the contact plate 64.

   As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, - the contact plate 64 is relatively thin compared to its width and length. The thickness of the plate 64 is approximately equal to the minimum transverse or vertical spacing of the edges of the hourglass hole to prevent vertical movement of the plate relative to the hole, as described above. after. Transverse tongues 70 projecting outwardly, which have substantially the same length as the holes 66, are arranged on either side of the plate substantially at mid-length thereof. The tabs 70 are intended to be engaged in the shaped holes

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 hourglass 66 to cooperate, by bending or pivoting on their support, with the raised branches 68 of the U-shaped bracket 62.

   To connect the contact plate 64 to the U-shaped flange 62, this contact plate 64 (Fig. 9) is placed on the yoke between the diverging branches 68, as shown in Fig.6. The tabs 70 are then placed in line with the hourglass shaped holes 66. The side branches 68 of the flange 62 are then pressed to bring them to a raised position substantially perpendicular to the base 69, as shown in FIG. 7, so that the tabs 70 engage in the holes 66.

   The contact plate 64 is then attached to the caliper 62 so as to be able to tilt or bend while pressing on it; it can thus tilt or oscillate about a transverse axis passing through the midpoint of the tongues 70 or of the holes 66. However, because the plate 64 and the tongues 70 have a thickness substantially equal to the minimum vertical separation of the edges hourglass-shaped holes, there can be substantially no vertical movement of the plate 64 relative to the yoke 62, regardless of the angular position of the plate 64. Preferably suitable contacts 72 are rigidly attached. substantially at the ends of the contact plate 64 to cooperate with the fixed contacts 18.

   The assembly of movable contacts 16 is rigidly attached to the free or movable end 48 of the bi-metallic element 14 by engaging a suitable rivet 96 (see Figs. 3 and 5) in the hole 60 of the element. bimetallic 14 and in the hole 61 of the U-yoke 62, after which the upper end of the rivet is crimped against the U-yoke 62, substantially as indicated at 98 in FIG. 5. The U-bracket 62 is thus rigidly attached to the free end of the element.

 ment bimetallic 14 and follows the bimetallic element in its movements. Preferably, the U-shaped yoke and the set of movable contacts 16 are isolated from the bimetallic element 14 by means of suitable washers and insulating sleeves 100 (see Fig. 5).

   The fixed contacts 18, which are two in number in the present example, have a main part 90 and a rivet-shaped part 92 facing upwards. The fixed contacts 18 are rigidly attached to the rim 30 projecting outwardly from the base 12, by inserting into the holes 40 of the rim 30 their rivet-shaped extensions 92 facing upwards, after which, for example, the firmly against the upper surface of the flange 30 the upper end of these rivet shaped extensions, as indicated at 95 in FIG. 5. Appropriate insulating washers and sleeves 94 may be arranged between the solid main part 90 and the rivet-shaped extension 92 of the contacts 18 to isolate them from the base 12.

   Appropriate terminal blades 97 can be associated with the fixed contacts to constitute a means of connecting the thermostat to the circuit (not shown) which is to be controlled by means of the thermostat.

   The intermediate adjustment piece 20, shown in Figs 10 to 14, comprises in the present example a main part 74 and up and down converging fingers or prongs 76 located near one end of the main part. The adjustment piece 20 is preferably made of an elastic material to allow the fingers 76 and the main part 74 to move, in a limited amount, substantially along the longitudinal axis of the fingers 76 and to allow movement. lower end of fingers 76 to produce a directing action substantially along their transverse axis for the purposes specified hereinafter.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   The main part 74 of the intermediate adjustment piece 20 has several holes 80 arranged at one end to enable the adjustment piece 20 to be attached to the base 12 so that the fingers 76 descend from both edges of the other end of the part. main 74. A semi-circular notch 88 is provided in the part 74 between the descending fingers 76 to allow the adjustment member to be placed around the adjustment screw 22 and to allow the fingers 76 to each come to be placed on one side. of this adjusting screw. Lips 84 project outwardly from the main part 74 of the adjustment part 20 on either side of the notch 88, between this notch and the respective descending fingers 76.

   The lips 84 have a semi-cylindrical trough 86 projecting downwardly to cooperate with the adjusting screw 22, as will be described below.

   As shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the descending fingers 76 of the adjuster 20 are relatively narrow and have an upper section 73 which is disposed substantially perpendicular to the main part 74, an intermediate section 75 oriented obliquely inward, and a lower end or hooking section 81. Each hooking section 81 has a notch 78 in the upper part of its inner edge to engage the middle strip 44 of the bimetallic member 14, as shown in FIG. 4 and as explained in more detail below.

   The inner edge 79 of the lower portion of each hooking section faces obliquely outward from the notch 78 to provide a snap-fit connection between the fingers 76 and the bimetallic member 14 (see Fig. 13). The notches 78 have a shape allowing free cooperation with the notches 52 and the median strip 44 of the bimetallic element 14, as will be explained below in more detail.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The adjustment screw 22 is, in the present example, constituted by a rod screwed into the tapped hole 36 of the main upper support flange 30 of the pedestal 12, and it is arranged to protrude on the iron or other appliance in order to allow a user to easily adjust the thermostat 10 thanks to the cooperation of the adjustment part 20, as described below.

   As shown in Fig. 3, the adjustment screw 22 comprises a threaded part 83 located substantially at its lower end and intended to cooperate with the threaded hole 36 of the base 12. An annular groove 82 is formed in the lower part of the screw 22 a little above of the threaded part 83. The groove 82 cooperates with the lips 84 of the adjustment piece 20 so that when the adjustment screw 22 is rotated in the hole 36, the cooperation of the latter with the adjustment piece 20 has the effect of controlling the operation of the bimetallic element 14, as will be described below in more detail.

   In order to mount the thermostat 10, the fixed contacts 18 are attached rigidly and with the interposition of insulation to the flange 30, as described above. The assembly of movable contacts 16 is rigidly attached to the bimetallic element 14 so that it comes to be placed in line with the fixed contacts 18 in order to cooperate with them. Then the bimetallic element 14 is rigidly attached to one of the support legs 32 by inserting the fastening rivet 54 into the hole 42 of this leg and by fixing it rigidly there by a firm crimping of the lower end of the leg. this rivet against the support foot 32 in the shoulder hole 43.

   The bimetallic element 14 is thus disposed substantially along the longitudinal axis of the thermostat 10 at the same time as the assembly of movable contacts 16 is placed substantially vertically above the rim or tab 34 which, when the thermostat 10

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 opens or trips, restricts the downward movement of the bimetallic element.

   The adjusting screw 22 is then inserted into the threaded hole 36 and arranged so that the annular groove is substantially in line with the upper surface of the flange 30. The adjustment piece 22 is then placed on the flange 30 of the flange. so that the lips 84 enter the groove 82 and cooperate with it while the fingers 76 come to be placed across the L-shaped holes 39 (see Fig.3). The holes 80 then substantially coincide with the holes 38 of the flange 30, after which suitable rivets 102 can be inserted therein to rigidly attach one end of the adjuster 20 to the base 12.

  When the adjustment piece is placed on the base 12 with the descending fingers 76 protruding through the holes 39, these fingers are disposed substantially in line with the adjustment screw 22, each on one side thereof.

   When placing the intermediate adjustment piece 20 on the base 12, with its descending fingers 76 passing through the rim 30, the hooking sections 81 of these fingers 76 engage the middle strip 44 of the bimetallic element 14.

  Since these fingers 76 are made of an elastic material, their tapered ends force the fingers 76 to pull apart as they are pushed up and down on the bimetallic member, so that the fingers slide in the notches 52 of the middle strip 44 of the bi-metallic element 14.

   When the fingers 76 are slid up and down on the middle strip 44 in the notches 52 thereof, the notches 78 of the fingers 76 cooperate with the notches 52 of the middle strip 44 of the bimetallic element 14 and establish with it a snap-in connection or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 elastic bond. The notches 52 of the middle strip 44 prevent any relative movement between the fingers 76 of the adjustment part 20 and the bimetallic element 14 along the longitudinal axis of the bimetallic element 14. The notches 78 prevent any relative movement between. the fingers 76 and the bimetallic element 14 along the longitudinal axis of the fingers 76 or, in other words, a movement perpendicular to the plane of the bimetallic element 14.

   As a result, it is obvious that there can be no relative movement between the adjustment part 20 and the bimetallic element 14.

   However, it is clear that, since the fingers 76 of the adjustment piece 20 elastically engage the bimetallic element 14 as a result of the cooperation of the notches 78 and 52, the bimetallic element is free to flex at any rate. position to another around this connection as a fulcrum. However, this bending occurs without any relative linear movement between the adjusting part and the bimetallic element at the fulcrum.

   When the intermediate adjustment piece 20 is in position, on the base 12, the lips 84 cooperate with the adjustment screw 22 because they are engaged in the annular groove 82. Once the adjustment piece 20 is rigidly attached. at the base 12, these lips 84 are at all times urged to bear from top to bottom against the screw 22 whatever the position of this screw. The cooperation between the lips 84 and the adjustment screw 22 thus ensures that the longitudinal or vertical movements of the adjustment screw 22 are transmitted correctly at all times to the middle band 44 of the bimetallic element 14 by through the fingers 76 without any lost movement.

   It follows that when the screw 22 is moved from bottom to top, the force applied to the adjusting part is it @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 also facing upward along the length of adjusting screw 22, as shown by arrow A in Fig. 4.

  This force is applied to the bimetallic element 14 through the fingers 76, and due to the converging inward shape of these fingers, this force is applied in the direction of the fingers along arrows B, on Fig. 4. As a result, the lower end or hooking section 77 of the fingers 76 is pushed inward substantially as shown by arrows C in FIG. 4. This condition ensures at all times a positive, resilient and firm snap-in connection between the adjuster 20 and the bimetallic member 14 and on the other hand allows the bimetal member 14 to flex freely at all times. time around it.

   As the bimetallic element 14 flexes from the "open circuit" position to the "closed circuit" position, or vice versa, there is a time when there is substantially no direct force exerted between the bimetallic element 14. and its support, namely the adjustment screw 22 and the fingers 76.

  However, due to the downward directing action of the elastic adjustment piece 20, by which the lips 84 are pushed against the lower surface of the annular groove 82, and it is evident that due to the transverse elastic reaction between the fingers 76 and middle band 44 there is hardly any lost or free movement between either of the cooperating parts of the bimetal element 14, the adjusting piece 20 and the adjusting screw 22.

   This feature makes it possible to adjust the thermostat 10 correctly or exactly at all times for a very small temperature difference.

   As the assembly of movable contacts 16 is rigidly attached to the free end of the bimetallic element.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

  14, he moves in solidarity with her. However, because the contact plate 64 rests, so as to bend or oscillate, in the hourglass-shaped holes in the side walls of the caliper 62, it follows that the movable contacts 72 mounted on the plate 64 can execute a relatively wide free movement with respect to the fixed contacts 18. This ensures at all times a positive engagement of equal pressure between the two fixed contacts and the two moving contacts.

   The downward movement of the set of movable contacts 16 and of the free end of the bimetallic element 14 is limited by the tab 34 and can be varied by adjusting their relative positions. This setting controls the thermal amplitude or sensitivity of the entire thermostat.

   The thermostat according to the invention thus proves to be thermally sensitive to the point of being able to handle at least 1500 watts with a very minimal temperature difference, due to the fact that it comprises a setting device positively associated with a bimetallic element acting by clicking, so as to substantially eliminate any relative movement between them, and a movable contact assembly comprising a contact plate which is free to oscillate or flex with respect to the bimetallic member, but is substantially prevented from performing a vertical translational movement relative to the bimetallic element.
