<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Speed change for cycles"
The object of the present invention is a change. gear for cycles, especially for bicycles, designed to avoid the drawbacks of derailleur devices, in which the chain frequently jumps out of the sprockets and the mechanism is exposed to being worn or jammed by dust and mud.
According to this invention, the use of a chain derailleur is eliminated thanks to the use of a small gearbox with a sliding gear which is fixed to the frame of the cycle and whose input and output shafts carry
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
each a chain sprocket, the first of these sprockets being driven by an endless chain which passes around the crank wheel, and the second sprocket being constantly connected by another endless chain to the sprocket of the rear wheel.
One of these last two gears is preferably freewheeling.
The player of this gearbox is controlled by means of a lever or other maneuvering member placed within reach of the cyclist, and by means of an appropriate transmission, preferably by Bowden cable.
The gearbox can be built in very small dimensions so that it does not create any annoying bulk and does not detract from the appearance of the bicycle. The gear change members are there protected from dust, well lubricated and can operate for a long time without appreciable wear. Finally, the risk of the chain escaping from the sprockets is eliminated since the chains remain constantly engaged on the same sprockets.
By way of example, the accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of a gear change, at three speeds, according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial elevation of a bicycle provided with this gear change.
Fig. 2 is an axial section of the latter on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a top plan, the cover being removed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 4 is a vertical section along the line IV-IV of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section along the line V-V of FIG, 1 on a larger scale.
The gearbox 1 has in two opposite walls ball bearings 2 and 3, which support the receiver shaft 4 'and the hollow motor shaft 5, and ball bearings 6 which support a countershaft. 7 parallel to the previous ones.
On the outer ends of the shafts 4 and 5 are fixed chain sprockets 8 and 9; inside the boot are the pinions with straight or oblique teeth producing the various gear ratios desired, namely: a pinion 10 integral with the hollow shaft 5, a sliding pinion 11 sliding on the shaft 4 and secured in rotation with it by a key or splines, a pinion 12 mounted idle on this shaft 4, and three pinions 13, 14, 15 secured to the countershaft 7 and having suitable diameters to mesh respectively with the Pinions 10, 11 and 12. Pinions 10 and 13 constantly mesh with each other, as do pinions 12 and 15.
On the other hand, the sliding pinion 11 carries on its opposite faces wolf-tooth crowns 16 and 17, which can engage with similar crowns 18 and 19 integral with the pinions 10 and 12 respectively. It can be moved along the shaft 4 by a yoke 20 which slides on a fixed axis 21 and the two cheeks of which are cut out to apply freely on the two faces of said pinion 11 around the teeth 16 and 17.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The movements of the yoke 20 are controlled by means of an angled lever 22, 23 pivotally mounted on the cover 24 of the box 1, the internal branch 22 of this lever being provided with a finger or a roller 25 engaged between the two cheeks of the yoke and its outer leg being actuated by a steel wire 25 attached to a lever 27 mounted on the bicycle frame within easy reach of the cyclist. This lever is articulated at 28 on a sector-shaped support 29 which is integral with a collar 30 which is clamped on a tube 31 of the frame using a bolt 32; the support 29 comprises a heel 33 whose end is notched and against which the lever 27 is pressed by a spring 34 placed on the axis 28. The lever can thus occupy three positions depending on whether it is pressed against the top of the heel 33, in its notch or against the underside.
The wire 26 slides through a Bowden sheath 35, the ends of which are respectively fixed to the support 29 and to the box 1.
It can be seen that when the lever 27 is raised as shown in the drawing, the lever 22, 23 maintains the yoke 20 in the position for which the sliding gear 11 is in engagement with the pinion 10. When the lever is stopped on l The notch of the heel 33, the pinion 11 will mesh with the pinion 14, and when it is lowered below the heel, this pinion 11 will be mated with the pinion 12.
The gearbox 1 is fixed to the rear fork 36 of the bicycle frame between the crankset and the axle 37 of the rear wheel; the pinion 38 of the latter
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
re is connected to the pinion 8 by an endless chain 39 and the pinion 9 is connected by another endless chain 40 to the crank gear (not shown). In order to place the axis of the pinions 7, 8 in the same plane or substantially in the same plane as the axes of the rear wheel and of the crankset, it is necessary to deform the portion of the fork 36 which receives the gearbox 1. , or to replace this portion by a special part supporting it.
The drawing shows a rear fork, the right branch of which has been cut and replaced by a rigid part 41 integral with a wall of the bolte 1, and reinforced by ribs 42; the front end 43 of this part is shaped like a socket and fits over the retained part of the branch 36, where it can be fixed by clamping by means of bolts or by aondure; the rear end 44 is shaped in a known manner to engage on the axis 37 and to assemble with the rear uprights of the frame.
The operation is as follows:
When the sliding gear 11 is engaged with the pinion 10, the rotation imparted to the latter by the chain 40 is transmitted by the shaft 4 and the pinion 8 to the chain 39 and consequently to the rear wheel, therefore. one way
EMI5.1
direct, ie without 1? linkervention of the reduction gears.
The sliding gear being brought to its middle position, the rotation of the pinion 10 is transmitted to it through the intermediary of the pinions 13 and 14 with a certain demultiplication so that the pinion 8 and the rear wheel
EMI5.2
are controlled at a slower speed than before.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Finally when the player 11 is brought into engagement with the pinion 12, the rotation is transmitted from 10 to 12 via the and 15 with a greater reduction than above,
It is understood that a freewheel assembly may be provided either in the pinion 38 of the rear wheel, or in the crankset, or in one of the pinions 8, without the principle of the invention being changed,
We can also vary the number of pairs of gears in gearbox 1 to obtain a number of speeds less than or greater than three
It should be noted that in the embodiment shown, the pinions 13, 14, 15 are formed integrally with the shaft 7, and that the pinions 9 and 10 are formed integrally with the shaft 7. shaft 5, so that the. The construction is simple and the size of the apparatus is very small. The pinions 8 and 9 may have the same diameter as shown or different diameters.
A ring of balls 45 is preferably interposed between these pinions in order to eliminate the friction of one against the other and that of the shaft 4 inside the shaft 5.
Of course, the various construction details shown can be changed without departing from '.'invention, as can be used. to move the sliding pinion any control mechanism other than that described above by way of example.
