<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
D'après ce qui précède le fonctionnement du dispositif s'effectue comme suit : étant donné que chaque touche est établie de façon à ce que d'un côté elle corresponde à un butoir déterminé de la roue motrice pour engendrer une rotation en fonction du contact électrique, du côté opposé elle correspond à un sec- teur déterminé du tambour ; par exemple T est en liaison d'un côté avec S de la roue 3 et de l'autre côté avec le tambour où il faut par exemple relever un dossier du secteur C;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
En envisageant le cas d'un dispositif formé par dix tambours (A - B - C - D - E - F etc..) indépendants comportant chacun 200 tiroirs, le fonctionnement s'effectue comme suit ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
frappe le poussoir correspondant des séries S des centaines ou le séleo- tionneur des tambours pour le déplacer en avant par rapport au plan antérieur du chariot pour fermer le circuit sélectionneur par l'entremise de l'électro-aimant 22 E; à ce moment la touche sous l'action de la tige à ressort 43 provoquera au moyen du dispositif 44 - 45 - 46 le déplacement à droite d'un pas du chariot, ensuite on poussera la touche des dizaines 3, de sorte que le levier 27 de la touche 3 pousse les poussoirs oorrespon- dants des séries S2 et T2 dont le premier ( poussoir de la sé- . rie S2 ) dans ce cas n'a aucun effet, tandis que le seoond ( poussoir de la série Ta ) détermine et individualise la di- zaine;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Revolving filing cabinet, electrically operated for the rapid search of files".
The object of the present invention relates to a large rotating cabinet for archives with electro-mechanical movement capable of finding very quickly and very conveniently the files which are placed therein.
Substantially the object in question is constituted by one or more drums functioning as drawer racks intended to rotate by the action of electric motors actuated indirectly by the keys of a keyboard each of which is directly or indirectly related to a determined sector of the drum (when it is a single drum) or with one of the elementary drums when the device consists of several drums.
Practically the object of which it is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The question herein is considered in two embodiments: either a first elementary form and a remarkably improved second. According to the first embodiment, the device consists of a single large drawer-holder drum intended to turn on an arc magnitude determined as a function of the duration of general electrical contacts, which, precisely, are carried out in a forced, determined and different phase, by each of the keys of the keyboard and by the input of specific mechanical devices in such a way that to search for such a file it is necessary to first establish in which sector of the drum it is located,
then the drum is rotated so that the sector where the backrest is located is presented to the researcher who, finally, has to do a little selection work. In the sector according to the second embodiment, which in substance represents a very remarkable improvement of the first:
the rotation of the drum, which however is considered to be constituted by several elementary drums, takes place according to the number of the file that is sought by means of particular electric circuits intended to set in motion and on an arc suitable circle only, the drum concerned, that is to say concerning the folder to be searched, so that to search for such a previously numbered folder it is sufficient that the searcher dials the corresponding number on the keyboard turns e so that the drum interested and only this one / so that the sought-after file is placed on target.
By virtue of this second embodiment, the device also envisions a continuous ribbon "section", automatic and unlimited in its content, it is continuous in the sense that it is endowed with a translational movement in both directions; automatic in the sense that it operates automatically

the sense that it can be increased and lengthened at will by increasing or inserting any quantities of tapes as required.
The present invention is illustrated by way of example in three fundamental embodiments in the figures of the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an exterior perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 shows an assembly section according to the first embodiment.
Figure 3 shows a general section according to the second embodiment.
Figure 4 shows a section following a - b of figure 3.
Figure 5 shows a general section of the automatic heading device.
Fig. 6 shows a general section according to the third embodiment.
Figure 7 shows a section following a - b of figure 6.
By considering the first case, the figures 1 and 2 show the drum formed by the cylindrical spokes a - b - o box-holder 2. The cylinder is integral with the large wheel 3 furnished with spokes in number corresponding to the number of elements abc, between each pair of spokes is placed a stopper 5 intended to abut against the movable stopper 6 integral with the bearer 7 in connection through the system of levers L with the keyboard. which is actuated by the lever systems L'et L and by the keys 8 will be moved proportionally to the angle A by the rods 15 of the sliders 16 actuated by the rods 17 connected by the brackets 18. The above arrangement may however be arranged along a vertical axis or along an axis inclined by any amount, on the horizontal plane, or alternatively arranged according to a gyroscopic method.
According to the above the operation of the device is carried out as follows: given that each key is established so that on one side it corresponds to a determined stop of the driving wheel to generate a rotation according to the contact electric, on the opposite side it corresponds to a determined sector of the drum; for example T is linked on one side with S of the wheel 3 and on the other side with the drum where it is necessary, for example, to raise a backrest from sector C;
the key T corresponding to the stopper S and to the sector C will be lowered, so that the cursor 16 'actuates the rod 12 according to the extent necessary to bring, by means of the system of levers L, the cursor 1. in its position radial suitable so that the oscillating stopper 6 abuts the stopper S which is in connection with the key T; as a result of this operation the rotation of the wheel 3 actuated by the motor 11 is caused which, simultaneously with the movement of the cursor 7, will have been requested by the contact 10 actuated by the key T, by the simple operation of lowering the key .
At the moment when S stops at 6 following the lowering of the key caused by the impact, the oscillating frame 19 of which the valve 20 forms part will deliver the sector 9 which will thus resume its rest position simultaneously with the system of levers L ' and L and the device will thus be ready for a second maneuver.
The above device can however be realized by eliminating part of the mechanical arrangements and can

time to undergo constructive variations, 'Now considering the second case in Figure 3, the electrical device, acting according to the file (or better said of the file number) that it wants to find, oonsist in a selector table of contacts intended to be put in action by the levers connected to the keyboard keys so as to form the number corresponding to the folder,
while generating particular electrical contacts as well as end stops against which the cursors intended to determine will stop (as a result of the position commanded by the stoppers and because of their rack-and-pinion establishment acting on an axis carrying a contact disc ), the relative position of said contact disc which, being fitted with switches, causes the axle clutch via an electromagnet, which takes its movement from the constantly moving motor shaft and produces consequently the rotation of the drum concerned, over an arc magnitude correlative to the position kept by the contact disc and lastly correlative to the number dialed on the selector table in connection with the stops driven on it.
Obviously the schematically described device requires secondary devices necessary for its automatic operation such as the sliding device (to bring the table in a suitable position to undergo the effect of the levers acting on it) the return device to the rest state , the main axle clutch device and the electrical circuits connecting the electromagnets to the contact discs.
The automatic ribbon heading is constituted by an electro-mechanical device, known to have a keyboard corresponding to alphabetic letters, by which the contacts controlling two electromagnets controlling their control are generated.

turn two couplings intended to cause the rotation of one of the drums on which is wound the ribbon of the heading to carry it in the section of the letter sought.
By considering the device carrying 200 spools per drum (FIG. 3) an electric motor 11 connected to the network circuit actuates, through the transmission 12, the shaft 4 fitted with clutches 21 and starting from the drums 1 spool holder 2.
Each coupling 21 is also controlled by an electromagnet 22 electrically connected to the disc of the contacts 23 coaxial with the disc 24 synchronized by means of the chain 25 with the corresponding drum. The keys 8 are then connected to the profiled levers 27 articulated at 28 intended to press on the pushers 29 disposed movably on the slide 30 in vertical series of five elements (S series) and 10 elements (T series) and of which each element mobile is respectively used to form the number of the drum and the number of the drawer concerned carried by this drum.
The push-buttons of the S series are also electrically connected by means of circuits to the corresponding disc of the contacts 23 whose rotation is limited or determined by the vertical rack sliders 31 and 31 'whose position is in turn determined through the system. lever L3, by the mobile pushers of the T series and is caused by the gear and rack 32 actuated by the oliquet 33 intended to slide in the double propeller pitch 34 traced on the countershaft 35 which takes its movement Continuous from the motor shaft 4 by means of the transmission 36.
An electromagnet 37 is then provided to provide the double role of controlling the movement of the rack 32 intended to allow the vertical movement of the slides 31 and 31 'as well as to return the slide 30 to the initial state by means of the lever. 38 and of the clutch 39 intended to enter

one of the holes 40 to cause the rotation of the pulley 41 and consequently the winding of the flexible tape 48.
The slider 30 further comprises a translation device in the direction of the arrow F 'connected to the movement of the keys 8 constituted by a spring-loaded oscillating rod 43 acting by means of the lever system 44 such as a jack on the wheel. toothed 45 meshing with the rack 46 on which the slide is mounted in order to give it the advancement of one step following the internal profile 45 'of the wheel 45 at each relaxation of a button, the rest state of the system being ensured by the position of the pawl 44 'on the overhanging profile 45' '.
To return the pushers of the S and T series to their initial state, the cart 30 is also fitted with a hinged valve 47 at the stops 48 intended to abut the push buttons, this valve being actuated automatically by the appendix 49 sliding elastically on the inclined plane 50.
In the case under examination in which the drums have 200 drawers, the device envisages a particular arrangement according to which the contact disc 23 is lined with two interruptions in which are inserted the two contacts 51 and 52 which receive the current by an electro switch. magnet 53 depending on whether it is the drawers included in the first or in the second hundred of each drum.
Referring to the sliders 31 and 31 ', however, it should be noted that while being integral in their movements, the first (31) operates in relation to the tens (constituting the number to be formed) and the seoond (31') operates in relation to the units so that 31 acts on the axis 26 of the contact disc 23, by means of the pinion 54 aotionned by the rack 55 which is mounted in a sliding manner to allow an additional translation 55 'generated by
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the cursor 31 'through the translation system 56 to which the rack 55 is connected by the pivot 57 so as to cause a non-rigorous solidarity between the two cursors.
In addition, the movements of said sliders are regulated by the device 32 through the friction system 58 which controls these movements through the system of levers L3. The drums 1 also include a braking device 59 in order to moderate their rotation at the moment of disengagement of their axis. The device contemplates a general pushbutton switch 60.
The device of the "automatic section", which aims to make it possible to search for the directory number of a file by means of sliding the "section" with remarkable speed and stopping it at the right moment, consists of by a tape wound on the drums 62 and 62 'which take their movement from the main shaft! for 'through the transmission 63 connected to the axis 64 on which are arranged the couplings 65 s and 65 d intended to drive by means of the transmissions 66s and 66d in one direction or the other, one or the other other of drums 62s and 62d. The device is then connected by a chain transmission 67 to the worm 68 of the keyboard which has as many keys 69 as there are alphabetic letters.
Below each key is then disposed an angularly shaped oscillating stopper 70 intended to be turned by the nut 71 to cause the right contact 72 (3 / to the left 72s, of the pusher which by suitable circuits leads to the electro- magnet 74s and 74d intended to control the couplings 65s and 65d to cause rotation in the desired direction.
By considering the case of a device formed by ten independent drums (A - B - C - D - E - F etc.) each comprising 200 drawers, the operation is carried out as follows;
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Assuming the device is in action, the shaft 4 turns idle, the couplings 21 being disengaged as shown in the figure and assuming that the file classified by N 834 is to be found, this is that is to say by a number referring to the first hundred drawers contained by the fifth drum (E), the carriage is at this moment moved completely to the left, we will push the key corresponding to N 8, so that lever 27 connected to button 8,
hits the corresponding push-button of the hundreds S series or the selector of the drums to move it forward with respect to the front plane of the carriage to close the selector circuit by means of the electromagnet 22 E; at this moment the key under the action of the spring rod 43 will cause by means of the device 44 - 45 - 46 the movement to the right of one step of the carriage, then we will push the tens key 3, so that the lever 27 of key 3 pushes the corresponding push-buttons of the S2 and T2 series, the first of which (push-button of the S2 series) in this case has no effect, while the second (push-button of the Ta series) determines and individualizes the ten;
as soon as key 3 is released, the carriage under the action of the spring rod 43 will move to the right by another step so that at the moment of pressing key 4 (of the units) the series pushers S3 and T3 are in a suitable position to be struck by the lever of the key concerned as in the previous operation, At this instant the N 834 corresponding to the file to be searched for will come out on the push-button carriage, as will the contacts relating to the selection of the drum and to the sector of the drum where the file is located, will be made through circuit W which, when switch 60 is closed (in electrical connection with circuit X of the network)
causes the closing of the general electromagnet 37 as well as the electromagnet by-
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
particular of the interested drum 22 E to force the pawl 33 in the pitch 34 which in turn causes the movement according to the arrow F of the rack 32 and therefore the movement of the friction arms 58 in the direction of Wire which through the system of levers L3 in turn cause the descent of the sliders 31 and 31 'until they come up against the displaced pushers of the carriage which in turn cause the rotation of the axis 26 also determining the relative position of the disc of the contacts 23, while noting that the cursor 31 directly causes the rotation of the shaft 26, while the action of the cursor 31 '(units)
is effected through the complementary movement generated by the system 56. Simultaneously the circuit of the electro-magnet 22 E closes by causing the clutch of the relative coupling 21 E and by means of the pivot 59 'releases the brake and engages the entire friction transmission system R with the movement of the drum.
Now, since the electromagnet 22 E nevertheless remains closed when the push-button of the switch 60 returns to its position because of the circuit Y and the contacts Y 'connected to the rod of the electromagnet, the drum E resumes at turn by transmitting its movement by means of the transmission 25 E to the disc 24 until the contact 24 'which rotates by rubbing lightly on the contact disc 23 comes to be on the interrupt 52, which in this case, n 'has no current, and the electromagnet 22 E opens and consequently disengages the coupling 21, releases the pushers 59' and the friction brake comes into operation and stops the drum on the precise point desired.
At the same time, the electromagnet 37 opens, releases the spring 32, causes the engagement of the pawl 33 in the return pitch of the propeller 34, causing the entire device to return to the rest state, sliders 31 and 31 ', while because of the play of the pawl 38' which will abut the pusher 37 'the lever 38 forces the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
part 41 to push the pusher 39 into the hole 40 by causing the rotation of the pulley 41 which by winding the tape 42 drags the carriage into its initial position where the pivot 39 which is fitted with a secondary pivot 39 'slides on the plane inclined 40 'causing the release of the pivot 39 from the hole 40 so that all the members have returned to their initial position.
Assuming now that we have to search for the file classified by N 934, that is to say a number of the second hundred carried by the same drum E mentioned in the previous search, the lever of the D key will strike the push-button E of the S1 series as before, as well as the push-button 9 of the T series, which being electrically connected to the electromagnet 53 causes it to close through the contact 53 'which through the circuit Z puts the current in contact 52, thereby isolating contact 51 (which in the preceding operation was energized by circuit U) so that the drum rotates beyond 52 to present the drawers beyond the first hundred, that is, while in the first case the drum rotates up to the limit of interrupt 52 (which had no current)
in the case considered, it turns beyond the interruption 52, and that is to say up to the limit of the interruption 51 which has no current; all other operations and movements continue as above.
When it is necessary to search for a file classified by a number of four digits for example 1758 - having acquired the essential maneuver of pressing the keys one after the other - the operation continues as follows: in this case the carriage must travel one step more (step instead of 3), that is to say that it comes to be placed in a position such that the contact 30 "in turn takes the place of the contact 30 'so that the push-buttons of the Ti series no longer work electrically since the trolley leaves
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
the corresponding push-buttons of the T2 series and in parallel by the effect of the inclined plane 80 the rod 81 is restarted by the contact 82 to isolate all the push-buttons of the S series,
while the pushers of the S2 series cause through the S4 series the closing of the circuit of the drums beyond the fifth, that is to say the drums carrying the files classified by a number beyond the first thousand. Obviously the position of all the series of pushers results in a displacement of one step, so that the pushers of the T3 series determine the tens and those of the T4 series the units (the oentaines being determined by the contact disc 23) : all other movements and operations are carried out as above.
According to the third embodiment, the device acts as a function of the directory number of the file sought, not by forming the number on the keypad but by searching for the number on the dials arranged concentrically on handles, each of which corresponds to one of the drums of which the device is formed so that each drum constitutes an elementary device and each dial has as many numbers as there are drawers in each drum.
As such, the device envisaged according to this embodiment is made up of an indefinite series of drawer-holder drums, each of which is electrically and mechanically connected to a handle integral with an arrow rotating on the dial and wedged on the same axis of the disc. contacts, so that when operating the handle in relation to the number fixed on the dial, a determined position is imposed on the contact disc and, similarly to what happened in the previous case, a forced rotation of the drum concerned is caused .
Substantially following this realization the drum
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
drawer carrier 1 comprises a transmission 25 for synchronization of the disc wedged fol on the axis 87 of the handle 85 on which is also wedged the disc of the contacts 23 which rotates by rubbing the contact 24 '.
The arrow 86 rotating on the said axis 87 is also fixed on the dial 88 on which the numbers of the spools of the drum are progressively inscribed.
The operation is carried out as follows: where it is desired, for example, to search for the file classified by N 47, the arrow 86 is placed on this number of the corresponding dial for this head automatically; the contact disc is rotated until the interrupt 51 is in the corresponding position, so that the circuit W is closed by means of the contact 24 'of the synchronized disc 24 which causes - that through the electromagnet 22 the clutch of the coupling 21 and consequently the rotation of the drum until the contact 24 'will come to be placed in correspondence with the interruption 51, which by cutting off the current causes the opposite action, that is to say the opening of circuit W, the disengagement of 21,
and consequently stopping the drum with the aid of the automatic brake 59. When one wishes to search for a file contained in another cylinder one will have recourse to the corresponding handle and so on, each dial bearing the progressive numbers. records contained in the drums.
In view of the operation described above, it is obvious that this latter embodiment envisages the possibility of rotating any number of drums at a time, while the preceding embodiments envisage the rotation of only one drum at a time.
The "section" works as follows: whereas the ribbon contains in alphabetical order the name of the files and the number of the drawer where the file is kept
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
assuming that it is necessary to look for the number of a file whose initial of the name is the letter B the heading "being at this moment placed on a letter which is on the right, of the said letter B 'on the keyboard one will push the key B 'which causes the closing of the contact 72d and of the corresponding circuit which acting on the relative electromagnet 74d causes the engagement of the relative coupling 65d by forcing the drum 62d to drag the tape in the desired direction up to that by effect of the synchronous displacement of the nut 71,
the latter will strike against the end of the switch which will thus be released from the clamp 83 and by the effect of the spring 84 will return to its initial position. It should however be noted that in its course the nut 71 modifies the orientation of the angular contacts 70 of all the touches encountered on its path, an operation which will be carried out inversely in the following operation and so on, so that the angular pieces 70 always remain placed according to the operating orientation.
Obviously the above device can include constructive variations and in details, while remaining within the scope of the invention.
