 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

  "Nozzle with constant air speed and automatic variable flow",
The present invention relates to a nozzle or other devices with constant air speed and automatic variable flow rate, more particularly intended for supplying air to gasifier fires.

   Before studying the object of the present invention, it should be recalled here that the air arriving through the nozzle or the orifices in a mass of igneous fuel, first produces - by excess air - carbon dioxide CO2 while a small part of the carbon is transformed into carbon monoxide CO, the only interesting "driving" gas.

   By keeping the anhydride formed CO2 in contact with the igneous mass of fuel, this CO2 gives up an oxygen molecule which attaches to carbon

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 in ignition. The anhydride CO2 therefore becomes CO driving gas and the released oxygen molecule, by attaching itself to the igneous carbon, gives its side carbon monoxide uO, driving gas. By this simple reminder, we can therefore see which cycle is to be carried out for the best use of a fuel and for the best production of pure driving gas. In principle, all of the carbon here playing the role of fuel must be transformed into carbon monoxide CO, engine gas, to the exclusion of any production of anhydride CO2, inert gas.

   These reactions can only take place perfectly at a given temperature and in a given minimum time. It is therefore of major interest that the passage of the air sucked in by the nozzle passes through a significant igneous mass and accomplishes, through this mass, a path of a determined duration and consequently arrives at constant speed whatever or the volume of air required. The volume of air being essentially variable and dependent on the speed of the engine supplied by the gasifier, will have, if the inlet orifices to the furnace have a constant section, a speed proportional to the flow rate.

   Consequently, an adjustment taking into account the actual flow of air on arrival in the igniting mass can alone be effective.

   Furthermore, the temperature of the hearth will depend on the speed of the air and it is necessary to obtain, even at low speed, a minimum temperature to guarantee correct performance of the reactions indicated above.

   It is therefore necessary, even at low flow, to ensure a minimum air inlet speed.

   The design with a constant air intake section is as unacceptable as if a manufacturer of gasoline engines were proposed to use a carburetor with a single nozzle and without a "star" flap.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

If we look at what is going on and consider a gasifier that has just supplied the engine of a truck running normally for a period of time, we see that when the truck stops, distance to distance, to make deliveries for example, if the driver does not stop his engine, it runs "at idle". Under these conditions, the demand for air in the gasifier is no longer the same as during uninterrupted operation. If the halt is prolonged beyond a certain time, which is the most frequent, the fire decreases in the hearth.

   This is put on "standby", the igneous mass, essential for the production of a pure driving gas decreases in volume,
If at this moment the driver wants to set off again, using the usual reflex, he presses the accelerator; the engine accelerates but as a result the suction of the said engine on the nozzle is more considerable
In this way, a quantity of air is sucked into the gasifier which is much greater than its possibility of rational use in a home having only one reduced ignition zone. we will therefore produce a gas containing mainly anhydride.

   In a short time, the mass of engine gas contained in the gasifier will be exhausted, or at least very depleted, and the engine will have to be brought back to a speed allowing above all a "re-ignition" of the fireplace for a certain time, rather than l use of a gas which is lacking very quickly.

   There is there, not a phenomenon, but a logical fact which the manufacturers seem to have lost sight of.

   In fact, almost all "put on standby" gasifiers require, if not full "re-ignition" in the real sense of the word - and whatever it is sometimes necessary to completely re-ignite the gasifier - but a period of time. more or less long re-ignition which in any case requires the driver's attention,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

What has just been said for a gasifier vehicle working with frequent parking periods with the engine "at idle", applies to the same gasifier vehicle, when the said loaded vehicle has to climb an extended ramp.

   In this case the engine speed decreases more and more and we are in the presence - in a way - of a 'put to sleep' of the gasifier.

   If at this moment the driver changes speed, the engine running faster is in the same situation as before. Through the nozzle the engine sucks in the gasifier an air mass which is no longer in relation to the igneous mass - very reduced in volume - of the hearth, and despite the relief due to the change of speed, the engine no longer sucks gas that is too lean and can be caused to stall.

   With the nozzles of the current type, we are in the presence of a second best solution, since when, when the engine is idling, there is insufficient air speed at the inlet to the combustion chamber and when accelerates fully, the call due to the depression of the engine gives this air too much speed.

   Under these conditions the air strikes in the igneous mass and functions there like a torch, which can cause, by too sudden an increase in temperature, the deterioration by deformation and even by melting of the hearth.

   The object of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks by using an automatic nozzle, with variable flow rate, in order to maintain - without excess consumption - the ignition of a mass of fuel corresponding to the demand for fuel. air "at idle" but capable of producing engine gas when normal engine work is immediately resumed.

   The accompanying drawing, given by way of example only, shows one embodiment of this invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   Fig. 1 is / a longitudinal section of the nozzle.

   Fig. 2 is a cross section taken through A-B of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 3 is a schematic view of an embodiment of an automatic control for correcting additional air intake.

   In the drawing, 1 denotes the actual body of the nozzle which comprises a water cooling jacket 2. Inside the frame 1 are arranged ribs 3, 4, 5, 6, intended to serve as a guide for a rod 9 which comprises, at its end opposite the nozzle of the nozzle 1, a disc 8 capable of sliding like a piston in a cylinder 9 with the interposition of one or more sealing rings 10. The cylinder 9 is closed by a stopper 11 which comprises an extension sight 12 capable of being closed off by a shutter 13, comprising an opening 14 closed by a disc 15 of transparent or translucent material.

   Between the plug 11 and the disc 8 are arranged springs such as 16 and 17 in suitable number. At its end opposite to the disc 8, the rod 7 may have calibrated grooves 18, 19, 20, 21. Air inlet openings, such as 22 and 23, are made in the cylindrical part of the frame 1.La rod 7 is provided over its entire length with a channel 24.

   In the exemplary embodiment of an automatic correction of the additional air inlet shown schematically, FIG. 3, 25 designates the gasifier source connected by a duct 26 provided with a radiator 27 to the purifier 28. From the latter, line 29 conducts the gases to the engine. The duct 29 opens into a manifold 30 where the additional air duct 31 also opens.

   The gas duct 29 comprises a piston controlled by vacuum 32 and returned to its low point by a spring 33. The piston is extended by a rod

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 32, which carries a pulley 34 over which passes a flexible cable 35 of determined length, one end of which is fixed to the lever 36 of the additional air adjustment flap 37 disposed in the duct 31. The other end - mity of the flexible cable 35 is made integral with the movements of the movable part of the nozzle by an arm 38.

  A pulley 39, mounted on a fixed axis but movable by remote control, returns the flexible cable 35.

   The operation of this nozzle at constant air speed and automatic variable flow is as follows:
The nozzle being arranged at a suitable point of the hearth to be supplied with air, according to the needs and demands of the engine to be supplied with carbon monoxide CO, engine gas, the driver of the vehicle on which the gasifier fitted with the nozzle is mounted. object of the present invention, presses more or less on the accelerator pedal. If the driver does not press the said pedal, the engine runs "at idle" and its suction is relatively weak, corresponding to the air flow authorized by the sum of the sections of the grooves 18,19,20,21, allowing the necessary and sufficient quantity of air to pass through to "idle" the engine.

   When the engine requires a greater quantity of fuel, it produces itself by its suction, at the intake times, a corresponding depression; this depression is established in particular in the chamber A, formed between the disc 8 and the plug 11. The atmospheric pressure then acts on the disc 8 which is pushed back towards the plug 11, against the action of the springs 16 and 17, until to the reestablishment of the equilibrium which occurs when the air arriving through the annular space lowers the vacuum inside the chamber A.

   During its movement, depending on the pressure variations and the needs of the motor, the disc 8 drives in its movement the tube 7 to which it is integral, which has the effect of varying

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 proportional to the air flow at the nose of the nozzle.

  This device therefore realizes, automatically, and according to the actual needs of the engine, the variation of the air flow necessary to supply the gasifier furnace for the production of a fuel gas having the characteristics most suitable for the good. engine operation to which it gives remarkable flexibility.

   In fact, at any time, the depression D at the outlet of the nozzle is provided by the following formula: D = S - s / @ r
S being the surface of piston 8, s the outer section of tube 24, r the spring setting. ur all these factors are constant, consequently the depression which determines the speed at the entry is constant. In addition, by varying these factors, or more simply one of them, for example the pulling of the spring, it is possible to obtain a depression and consequently an air speed fixed in advance and invariable in the mass in combustion. .

   In the case of a gasifier, it will be possible, for example, to vary the air speed according to the fuel to be used and according to the temperature to be obtained in the hearth.

   Without departing from the scope of this invention, it is conceivable that the piston 8 be replaced by a bellows for example, and that the control of the tube 24 by the bellows or the piston is effected by the intermediary of mechanical, electrical or mechanical relays. other.

   Similarly, the bellows or the piston on which the depression acts could control several injection orifices which would be partially sealed or which would be sealed successively. '
Let us also consider that the depression caused by the motor is proportional to the speed and rotation of the latter on one side and the other.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 part of the total resistance of the gas circuit going from the mixer to the nozzle. This circuit has a variable resistance according to the fuels used, the state of cleanliness of the hearth and the state of cleanliness of the filters of the purifier. The mobile part of the nozzle in its movements represents the air flow and almost proportionally the flow and the weight of the gases.

   The variations in vacuum at the mixer, for the same engine speed, represent the variations in circuit resistance. The additional air entrained by the highly variable depression for the same engine speed must be sucked in proportion to the weight of the gases and not, as is currently done in proportion to the depression. It is therefore possible, after recording these two results on suitable devices, and by comparison, to determine the correction to be made to the additional air inlet openings, in order to keep the weight proportion always constant. This comparison of the two results could also be used to determine the state of cleanliness of the hearth and the filter and consequently to remedy any fouling or any clogging at the appropriate time.

  The displacement of the mobile part can therefore be used to correct, either manually or automatically, the additional air inlet as a reverse function of the vacuum.

   The movable part of the nozzle can be combined with any visual indicating device placed on the apron of the vehicle and allowing constant control of the depression and therefore an appropriate correction of the additional air intake.

   The exemplary embodiment shown schematically in Fig. 3 works as follows:
It is assumed that the normal resistance for the furnace-scrubber circuit = 150 m / m and that the area of the piston 32 is considered to be equal to the area of the disc 8 of the movable part of the nozzle is S, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 the spring 33 of the piston 32 having the same calibration as the springs 16 and 17 of the movable part of the nozzle plus S x 150 to compensate for the normal resistance.

   The system then operates and the shutter 37 does not move if the resistance is 150 m / m in the circuit. If the resistance increases, the air shutter 37 partially closes to correct the entry of additional air. Indeed, if the resistance increases between the piston 32 and the movable part of the nozzle, the first will move more than the second. As a result, the extension of the space between the pulley 39 and the pulley 34 will be greater than that of the space between the arm 38 and the pulley 39 so that the cable 35 having a well determined length , it is the space between the pulley 34 and the lever 36 which will shorten, thus causing the shutter 37 in the closing direction.

   It can therefore be seen that, thanks to this invention, a nozzle comprising a variable flow rate, ensuring a constant speed and allowing a suitable diffusion of the jet at high speed while eliminating the returns during "idling" operation is produced.

   It is obviously possible, where appropriate, to resort to other modes and to other embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention.

   Depending on the circumstances and the applications, the construction and assembly details may also be modified. Thus the nozzle may or may not include cooling by a water jacket or any other suitable similar device. Likewise; the tube 7 integral with the disc 8 could be pierced with suitably calibrated holes or provided with removable nozzles to allow the entry of a determined quantity of additional air.

   On the other hand, the various constituent elements of this invention may be replaced by others, playing the same role or producing the same effect.
Of course we can

 use any material, process and product likely to be used in the manufacture of these nozzles.
