 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   On peut citer comme autres avantagea des dispositifs sui- vant   l'invention :   une génératrice à aimant permanent peut être employée, sans qu'il se produise une action appréciable quelconque de démagnétisation des aimants due au courant de l'armature; les oscillations parasites pendant la charge du condensateur sont d'un ordre de grandeur plus faible par suite de l'inductance peu élevée de la source; des vitesses plus grandes sont possibles pour le moteur à cause de la constante de temps plus courte pour la charge du circuit;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 EMI6.4

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 According to another characteristic of the present invention

 tion the discharge circuit of each capacitor constitutes

 also a circuit from the source of electric energy to the other capacitor or to the other capacitors, so that the charge which these receive can be maintained or increased, and this also presents the advantage that the source of electrical energy is not short-circuited at any time.

   The invention also covers the specific arrangements which will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figures 1 to. 5 schematically show five different circuit diagrams of ignition systems according to the present invention.

   In the arrangement shown in Figure 1, the source of electrical power for the ignition circuit is a direct current generator 10, which can be controlled from the engine or from a storage battery or well again in any other suitable way. Two capacitors 11, 12 are connected in series and the assembly is connected to the terminals of the generator 10, without any intervention of switches, unless a switch is interposed for convenience, for example for tests. : During normal operation, the switch must always test closed.

   From a point 13 between the two capacitors 11, 12, a current outlet is connected to the primary 14 of a step-up transformer, the secondary winding 15 of this transformer being connected to the usual distributor and, to from there, to the spark plugs. Preferably, an air type transformer is employed, although this is not necessarily the case.

   The other terminal of the primary 14 is connected to a contactor 16 constituted by a two-way switch controlled in the usual way by the motor; the two studs 17.18 of this
 EMI3.1
 cSM 0 contactor are respectively connected to the other bomsey-capacitors 11 and 12, so that, when switch 16 is closed on pad 17, a circuit is established for unloading.

 ger the capacitor 11 by the 618ments 14, 15 and read and that, when the switch 16 is moved to the pad 18, 11 forms another circuit to discharge the capacitor 12 by the members 13, 14, 16 and 18.

   When this device operates, the two capacitors

 11, 12, being connected to the generator 10, receive therefrom a load. At the appropriate time, switch 16 is turned off.

   tri- ce 10 is applied to capacitor 1-- 'to charge it ¯.enec, nt le; discharge of the capacitor 11. When the next spark is required, the contactor 16 is moved to the pad 18, and the capacitor 12 is then discharged to give the spark in the manner described above, the capacitor 11 receiving during this time its charge or additional charge from the generator 10 through the primary winding 14 and the contactor 16, 18.

   The duration of the discharge of the capacitors is extremely short and, giving a suitable value to the capacitance of the capacitor and to the inductance of the transformer winding which can be used, a high frequency discharge is obtained. This is important, because the system will continue to operate, even with large conductances in parallel ... with the tips of the spark plugs, and therefore the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 high frequency system will continue to spark with a fouled spark plug under conditions where normal types of ignition would cease to function.

   The shape and nature of the spark helps to maintain ignition at high altitudes because of the extremely short spark duration.

   One of the advantages of the present invention, in comparison with the first known device described above, consists in that only one arm or contact lever is necessary and in that a spark is produced by the cooperation of the arm with only one. pair of contact pads, while in the
 EMI5.1
 Eventually, the tyghter contact arm moved between two contact pads to produce each spark.

   Another advantage of the present invention, compared to the second known device described above, consists in that the generator, or any other source of electrical energy, is never short-circuited, even when a condenser is being discharged, and in that its resistance and inductance can therefore be given a low value, while the charge time and the discharge time can thus be brought to a desired value whatever - shell necessary for high-speed engine operation.

   As other advantages, mention may be made of devices according to the invention: a permanent magnet generator can be used without any appreciable action of demagnetization of the magnets occurring due to the current of the armature; the parasitic oscillations during the charging of the capacitor are of an order of magnitude lower due to the low inductance of the source; higher speeds are possible for the motor because of the shorter time constant for the circuit load;

   there are less variations in the voltage of the high voltage as a function of speed than usual with other ignition systems, if the voltage of the source through which the charging is carried out remains constant, and there is a marked reduction in weight in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 comparison of other ignition systems.

   Instead of employing a direct current generator, one can employ an alternating current generator as shown in figure 2, on which the generator is indicated by the reference numeral 19, the rest of the system being the
 EMI6.1
 same as in FIG. 1 and being designated p;: r) 1; s carried out as reference. The generator 19 is o: tl: 3ndC; The one is a function of the speed of the contajtour 15, so that each capacitor is discharged as soon as it has been expensive.
 EMI6.2
 completely by the generator.

   Due to the fact that the potential applied by the generator is alternating, this organization has the advantage that the direction of the discharge from the capacitors is always the same through the primary winding 14 of the transformer and that, per cons:; - quent, the spark plugs can be arranged with the
 EMI6.3
 theity which gives> the minimum erosion of 1 candle. Another advantage is that, with an AC generator, a more suitable ratio can be obtained between the voltage of the generator and the Vit: s ^. La.wv ^ 1 - the it turns, that in the case of a generator of direct current.

   The figure shows yet another device in which a direct current generator 10 is employed; but to

 capacitor 11 or 12 must be discharged. This organization has the particular advantage that the switches 22, 23 apply only a low potential to a gate, so that no harmful sparks are produced.

   If, in the device shown in Figure 3, an alternating current generator were used instead of the direct current generator 10, the two thermal valves would be connected to the primary 14, but another organization is shown as variant by Figure 4, which shows an alternating current generator 19, as an energy source for charging the capacitors, and a single thermionic valve which has two anodes, respectively connected to the outer terminals of the two capacitors 11, 12, and only one gate controlling the valve.

   The two anodes 26, 27 are energized alternately and the closing of the gate polarization circuit by the switch 28 allows one or the other of the capacitors 12, 13 to be discharged, which is achieved as a function of the rotational speed of the generator 19, so that each capacitor is discharged at the appropriate time.

   In all the devices described so far, only one step-up voltage transformer 14 and 15 has been shown, the secondary of which is connected to the usual distributor. Due to the high frequency character of the capacitor discharge, the transformer windings may be small, and the present invention also covers a device shown in Fig. 5, in which the generator 29 is provided with two capacitors 30. , 31 connected in series with each other and in parallel with the generator, as in the devices described above; however, the socket 32 between the capacitors is connected to the rotary arm 33 of the conventional distributor, the different pads of which are connected to the individual spark plugs.

   Each spark plug is fitted with a small step-up transformer having

 primary and secondary windings 35,35, the secondary being connected to the spark gap or burst space 37.

   The two-way switch 38 is connected in parallel with the two capacitors 30; 31 so as to discharge them alternately. When the arm 38 is brought to the pad 39 to discharge the capacitor 30, the circuit is established from the capacitor 30, the pad .se, the arm 38, the mass,
