 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Process for shredding old leather waste"
French patent 853,114 relates to the dechroming of old leather waste, that is to say of leather waste already wrought oomme shoe leather waste or used leather objects. It is decrominated by treating the old leather several times alternately with lime and acid and washing it between these treatments. The resulting dechrominated leather scraps can be converted into valuable albuminoid products, for example gelatin glue.

   The gelatin glues thus obtained have, it is true, a color ranging from dark brown to black depending on whether they are made from brown or black leather waste, but as to their other properties they are of equal quality to that. of the usual skin glues and are even much superior to them in terms of their adhesive strength. However, from an economic point of view, this process is considerably burdened by the fact that in general the alternating treatment with lime

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 and the acid and the water wash between these treatments should be / repeated at least three times and very often still a much greater number of times.

   In trying to achieve '- clearer glues by the use of bleaches or bleaching agents according to the process which is the subject of French patent 853,114, it has been discovered, according to the invention, that one can considerably shorten the alternate treatment of old leather waste and the washing between these treatments by adding bleach during one or more lime and / or acid treatments.

   When bleaching agents are used simultaneously, it is already sufficient to treat twice alternately with lime and acid to obtain products which can be boiled directly.

   The process thus results in adhesives which are more or less clarified and whose other properties, in particular viscosity and adhesive power, are not adversely modified. Bleaches can be used. reducing agents such as sulfurous acid, sodium bisulfite or sodium hydrosulfite. however, better results are obtained with oxidizing bleaches such as peroxides or persalts, hydrogen peroxide, permanganate, lime chloride, hypochlorite, chlorine or ozone.

   The decolorants are applied, according to their nature, in the medium in which they can produce their action, for example sulfurous acid in the lime treatment, hydrogen peroxide also in the 6 la lime, potassium permanganate in both lime treatment and acid treatment. When potassium permanganate is used, it is advisable to subsequently treat with sulfurous acid to remove the separated manganese dioxide.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The bleaches can be used in one treatment or else in several lime and / or acid treatments. It goes without saying that it is also possible to use several different bleaching agents in the different treatments considered separately.

   It has furthermore been found according to the invention that particularly good results can be obtained by treating with bleaches alone, after the last acid treatment, the waste leather treated in the manner described. . In this treatment, too, it is possible to use both reducing bleaches, containing sulfurous acid, and oxidizing bleaches, in particular gaseous chlorine or chlorine water.

   Examples:
1,500 gr. of black leather shavings are treated as usual for a few days by 150 gr. of lime in the form of a 6% milk of lime with the addition of 80 gr. a commercial sodium hypochlorite bleach; are then washed, acidified in motion for two hours with hydrochloric acid, washed well, treated again with lime and bleaching lye under the conditions indicated above, washed, acidified again and washed. After the leather waste has been treated in this way, that is to say only twice, its dechromination is carried so far that it can be directly boiled in the usual manner.

  A dark gray adhesive is obtained which, if necessary, can be further clarified more strongly by the addition of 1% titanium white.

   2,500 gr. of black leather shavings are treated alternately by 150 gr. lime, 10 gr. of sodium peroxide and the appropriate amount of water and with hydrochloric acid, as described in Example 1, and are washed between the two treatments. After we have

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 limed and acidified alternately twice and washed between these treatments, the leather waste can be boiled and thus obtain a dark green glue.

   3. 400 gr. of black leather shavings are treated twice alternately with 150 gr. lime, 20 gr. chloride of lime and the appropriate quantity of water and hydrochloric acid and are washed between these treatments; the dechrominated product obtained is boiled.

   4,500 gr. of black leather shavings are treated as usual for a few days by 150 gr. lime in the form of 6% milk of lime; they are then washed, acidified with hydrochloric acid for 2 hours in motion and decolorized by simultaneous introduction of gaseous chlorine, well washed and again treated with milk of lime, then with hydrochloric acid and gaseous chlorine . After the leather waste has been treated in this way, i.e. only twice, its
 EMI4.1
 has deChtr.l.lrtl.13 such progress that we can directly boil them as usual.
