 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  High intensity electric cable.

   The invention relates to high current electric cables, namely both ordinary high voltage cables and cables whose dielectric is maintained at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure to increase the insulation capacity of the dielectric. The latter object can be achieved in various ways, but the desired high pressures, for example up to 15 atmospheres, could heretofore only be maintained sufficiently safely by enclosing the cable in a conduit. continuous tubular steel in which the aforementioned pressure prevails, since the lead-sheathed cables known heretofore, even provided inside or outside

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 interior of reinforcements or frames,

   in the long run can only withstand a pressure not exceeding a few atmospheres, when they are subjected from the outside to the pressure of the free air. This is due in part to the low mechanical strength of the lead itself and in part to the weakness of the longitudinal seal or the longitudinal seals of the lead sheaths made using conventional hydraulic lead presses.

   In the lead sheath of cables insulated with oil-impregnated paper, dangerous stresses also occur when the temperature rises and the volume of the oil increases accordingly, if one does not use, as for so-called "oil bath" cables, pressure-equalizing tanks arranged from place to place, since a lead sheath reinforced in a known manner does not allow itself to be elastically deformed to a considerable degree together with the reinforcement and is not preserved from the tendency of the lead to climb under the action of the efforts.

   The object of the present invention is to arrange the sheath of the cable so that it can be subjected, over the entire length of the cable, to elastic deformations when the internal pressure varies, and that these elastic deformations have such an appearance that the sheath does not undergo any dangerous change of shape.

   The invention therefore applies not only to cables permanently subjected to overpressure by special devices, but also to ordinary high-current cables provided with an oil-impregnated paper insulation.

   It is known per se to shape a lead-sheathed multiple cable so that the sheath has flat parts because, for example in a three-conductor cable, the sheath follows the common tangents between.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 successive insulated conductors arranged at the top of a triangle, instead of having a cross section. circular.

  The aim of this arrangement, however, was to achieve in particular a saving in material, especially in lead, and at the same time to make the cable suitable for withstanding an external overpressure, for example that created by its introduction into the tubular steel pipe mentioned above. -above. The oval shape of the conductor, the insulation and the lead sheath is also suitable for the absorption of an external overpressure, for example that adopted for certain cables with one conductor.

   With double lead sheathed cables and triple lead sheathed cables, it is also known, in order to gain volume or reduce costs, to place the insulated conductors side by side and give a flat appearance. to the lead sheath between the conductors. However, the lead sheath joints of these cables are arranged in the middle of the wide faces of the cable.

   Unlike this, the high current electric cable, object of the present invention, is capable of withstanding internal overpressure; this cable comprises, in known manner, a sheath of lead or other impermeable material surrounding the insulated conductor system, and an outer reinforcement, the cross section of the insulated conductor system and hence of the sheath having a circumference which comprises two opposite very curved or semi-circular surface elements and, between them, two slightly curved or flat surface elements, and according to the invention the cable is characterized mainly in that a continuous elastic strip is arranged along the length of the cable on each wide face of the cable sheath, between the latter and the outer reinforcement, and is held in place by the latter,

   this

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 strip being provided with transverse ribs and extending substantially over the entire wide face of the sheath, so as to make the membrane formed by the wide face of the sheath transversely rigid and to support it elastically against a permanent or temporary internal pressure of the cable .

   Such a cable can be easily manufactured by machine by the usual manufacturing methods. It has the important advantage that, without using any outer tubular steel pipe, the dielectric can be maintained under the same overpressure as the so-called oil bath cables, that is to say up to several atmospheres, or at the same overpressure as the so-called pressure or pressurized gas cables, that is to say up to 15 atmospheres.

   In addition, the invention makes unnecessary the internal channels or hollows and pressure equalizing reservoirs used in places for cables in an oil bath, since, due to the special construction of the cable, a pressure is obtained which is evenly distributed over the cable. the entire length of the cable and at the same time a greater degree of freedom is available with regard to the viscosity of the oil.

   Although the two strips, in cooperation with the metal wire reinforcement, elastically support the membrane very effectively, the cable is nevertheless sufficiently flexible in the longitudinal direction for practical handling thanks to its more or less flat shape and the the aforementioned arrangement of the ribs of the strips.

   Finally, the advantage is obtained that the possible joint or joints of the lead sheath can be established along the entire length of the cable in predetermined positions with respect to the cross section of the cable.

   According to the invention, the seal or seals of the. lead sheaths are located in places where the reinforcement carries

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 against the sheath at a wide angle, so that this part of the sheath, weak in itself, can be gripped well. The seal is for example arranged in the middle or near the middle of the very curved part of the surface of the sheath.

   In addition, it is advantageous to reinforce the sheath near the joint (s) by ensuring that its inner and outer surfaces have near the rounded part surrounding the outer conductors the appearance of eccentric circles which tangentially confine the surfaces of the small parts. curved or flat sheath. Regarding the shape of the strip, it should be noted that it is preferably a corrugated or zig-zag strip or a flat strip provided with stamped or punched ribs, the corrugations or ribs of which are arranged substantially transversely to the cable.

   By omitting the insulation between the separate conductors of a multiple cable according to the invention and by retaining the common insulation, a suitable embodiment of a single conductor cable is obtained. - that the insulated conductor system bears against the two strongly curved surfaces of the sheath.

   Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the following description of the embodiments of the new cable, shown in the accompanying drawing.

   Fig. 1 is a cross section of a triple cable according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of part of the same cable, Figs. 3 and 4 show details of two other embodiments of the strips used to support the lead membrane,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the flat face of a final embodiment of the cable and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

Fig. 6 is a cross section of the strip shown in FIG. 5.

   The cable shown in figs. 1 and 2 comprises three conductors 10, the centers of which are on a straight line, each conductor being surrounded by an insulating layer 12. If desired, there can also be provided a common insulation, not shown, for the cables. three conductors.

  Around the insulation of the conductors is formed by pressing a lead sheath 14 which at the top and the bottom extends in a straight line from one outer conductor to the other outer conductor and which for the rest follows. the outer curved surface of the outer conductor insulation. In the middle of these curved surfaces are the seals 16 of the lead sheath. However, this may have only one seal on one side. Over the lead sheath 14, possibly asphalted and surrounded by paper or canvas, is placed a taut frame 18 consisting for example of one or preferably two tapes of iron or bronze, so that the lead sheath is covered everywhere and can nevertheless be bent. Over this frame, at the top and the bottom, on the wide flat faces, is placed a continuous corrugated strip 20 of iron or bronze.

  As shown in fig. 2, this strip is preferably corrugated so as to have narrow corrugation tops as well as wide corrugation hollows, resting on the cable, which are separated only by short gaps where the lead sheath is supported. by frame 18 alone. The corrugations of the strip are arranged substantially transversely to the cable and the strip extends substantially over the entire wide face of the cable. On the corrugation tops of each strip 20 rests a second continuous corrugated strip 22 narrower than the first and disposed in the middle thereof. Like straps 20,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 strips 22 can be made of steel or bronze.

   The outer reinforcement of the cable consists, for example, of iron or bronze wires 24 which are wound helically with a pitch equal to the length of the sections of the strips 20 and 22 or with a different pitch. The metal wires 24 are however wound therein so as to pass through the corrugations of the strips 20 and to rest on the bottom of the corrugations of the strips 22. On the narrow faces of the cable, the metal wires bear against the frame 18 and, by therefore, against the lead sheath 14, the span extending on either side at an angle approaching 180. As a result, the lead sheath is particularly well supported against the joints 16 and their surroundings, which significantly reduces the risk of rupture at the height of the joints.

   As the corrugations of the strips 22 are much shallower than those of the strips 20, the reinforcing threads 24 are held above and away from the middle of the membranes formed by the flat parts of the lead sheath, so that the tension of the armor threads is advantageously used to effectively support resiliently, in cooperation with the strips 22 and 20, the flat portions of the lead sheath, and thus produced. desired membrane effect, elastic without exaggerated bulging.

   As shown in fig. 1, the metal wires 24 can bear both against the strips 22, in the middle of the membrane, and against the edges of the strips 20 in the bottom of the corrugations, so that the last mentioned strips are supported particularly satisfactorily.

  For a given internal overpressure, the crown of the membranes increases gradually from the sides to the middle, '

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 so that the lead does not deform in a detrimental manner and in particular does not undergo appreciable elongation.

   The lead sheath 14 can possibly be reinforced at the joints by ensuring that its internal surface and its external surface have, near the rounded part surrounding the external conductors, the appearance of eccentric circles which tangentially confine the surfaces of the parts. slightly curved or flat of the lead sheath, so that the thickness of the sheath increases along the rounded part of the top and bottom towards the joints 16.

   The way, shown and described, in which the membranes of the cable sheath are supported by the strips 20 and 22, can be varied in various ways without departing from the scope of the invention. What is important is that the reinforcements and the transversely ribbed and longitudinally flexible strips help elastically support the membranes of the lead sheath and prevent any harmful fatigue of the sheath, as has already been described above.

  In addition, it is important that the membrane is supported firmly by the strips in the transverse direction without the flexibility of the cable being unduly diminished. This object is achieved particularly satisfactorily by the embodiment shown and described.

   Instead of the metal wires 24 for the outer reinforcement, one or more tapes of the appropriate width may be employed, wound with an appropriate pitch to properly support the tapes 20 from the sides. Each strip 20 may be replaced by several strips having the same or different width, thickness, corrugation height and corrugation distribution, provided only that the stiffness in the transverse direction and the flexibility in the longitudinal direction requirements of the cable are ensured and that the lead sheath is always

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 days sustained in places not far apart from each other.

   Among other variations that come true, it may be mentioned that each strip 22 can be replaced - while retaining the strip 20 - by one or more metal wires which can optionally be twisted into a helix.

  The strip 22 can also be completely omitted, it does not matter whether the outer reinforcement is constituted by tapes or by wires, and in the latter case the reinforcement can be placed so that at the sides it rests against the edges of the bottom. undulations and that further inside it rests on the tops of the corrugations of the corrugated strip 20, the frame being placed, during winding, obliquely over these crests of corrugations.

   The support described for each membrane can also be replaced by a zig-zag strip 28 placed on the field (fig. 3). The rounded parts 26 of the strip must rest on the sides of the membrane, the axis of the cable being arranged vertically in FIG. 3 (as well as in fig. 4).

  The straight portions of the strip 28 are disposed somewhat obliquely to aid in cable flexibility. In this case also the reinforcement can be a tape instead of a wire, metallic. Other embodiments of rigid strips in the transverse direction can be produced by means of strips with punched and raised sides which stiffen the strip transversely, while in the other direction the punched sections are arranged so that the strip is sufficiently flexible longitudinally.

   Fig. 4 shows a strip 30 of this kind, which - above the dotted line - has punched and raised ribs or flanges 34 corresponding to rectangular openings 32, while below the dotted line slits 36 are punched alternately from opposite sides of the strip, so that the zig-zag strip thus formed is very

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 flexible in the longitudinal direction, but is sufficiently rigid in the transverse direction due to the presence of the raised flanges 34, so that the membrane can be resiliently supported in a satisfactory manner.

   Fig. 5 is a top view of a flat cable where the membrane of the lead sheath 14 is supported by a corrugated strip 37. The outer wire reinforcement 38 and the corrugations of the strip, on the wide face of the cable, are oriented a little obliquely in opposite directions.

  Furthermore, as shown in fig. 6, the edges of the strip 37 are bent slightly downwards and the ends of the corrugations, located near the edges of the strip, are turned above to the left and below to the right, in FIG. 5, so as to correspond to the inclination of the reinforcement 38, so that on the edges of the strip the reinforcing wire 38 rests in the hollows of the corrugations, while in the middle it bears on the somrnets of the corrugations.

  This embodiment of the strip can be easily produced on a press.

   Other suitable embodiments can also be produced by conventional manufacturing methods, for example on presses.

   To take account of the high electrical stresses the conductor system can be surrounded, below the paper insulation, with foils of foil or foil paper, and a similar winding can also be fitted directly onto the insulation of foil. paper, below the lead sheath. The conductor system can also be provided with a thin lead sheath. In the case of a single-conductor cable, the voids between the strands can be filled with metallic wires and this system can be surrounded by other metallic wires, so that a suitable flat or oval conductor is obtained. whose isolation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 wears well against narrow faces of lead sheath.

   In service, the cable is filled with a gaseous, liquid or semi-liquid insulation which forms the insulation of the cable together with the insulation paper. After an internal pressure has been produced, the membranes of the lead sheath undergo an elastic bulge, and thanks to the elasticity of the reinforcement and the strips, the bulge of the membranes adapts to the expansion and contractions caused. by temperature variations and the like, so that the pressure stabilizes.

   When the cable is pressurized gas, pressure can be produced by introducing gas into the cable after mounting the cable section.

   In the case of a cable in an oil bath, the pressure can likewise be produced after assembly by introducing oil into the collecting sleeves or the end sleeves, and possibly by heating the oil to reduce its viscosity if the oil used is not sufficiently fluid, but pressure can also be produced in the various sections of cable produced, before the cable is fitted.

  In the latter case, the desired pressure may be produced before or after establishment of the cable reinforcement, possibly in conjunction with heating if oil is introduced under pressure, or the desired pressure may be. produced in combination with the method of establishing the reinforcement, by introducing sufficient oil in advance so that the membranes receive a bulge such that the pressure builds itself to the desired level as a result of the deformation produced during the establishment of the armature. If desired, such a bulge of the membranes can already be created during the manufacture of the liner by suitably shaping the pressing tools (punch and die).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

   Since even thick oil can be used for the cables according to the invention, a noticeable oil leakage during assembly is easily prevented. If desired, the ends of the cable may be cooled, during the fitting of the sleeves, to an appropriate distance from the sleeve, to finally introduce through the sleeve a sufficient quantity of pressurized oil.

   To avoid the tendency of the cable to twist or roll up, some of the reinforcements can be laid with a pitch in the opposite direction.
