 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Regulator system.

   This invention relates to an apparatus for supplying a direct current from an alternating current source to a consumer circuit, and it relates more particularly to a system for the automatic adjustment of a rectifier whose output is controlled by the characteristics of the circuit. consumer circuit that it supplies.

   The main object of the invention is to provide an automatically regulated rectifier system in which the direct current supplied by the rectifier is controlled so as to send the current to the consumer device or circuit at a desired voltage.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The invention essentially consists of an apparatus for supplying a direct current from an alternating current source to a consumer circuit, apparatus comprising a rectifier equipped with a gate control circuit for controlling the output of the rectifier and a device for introduce a control potential into this gate control circuit, this device being constituted by a resistor and a DC voltage source in circuit with this resistor and by several heated cathode tubes connected so as to control the current delivered by said source through the said resistance,

   the cathode of one of these tubes being supplied in agreement with the variations in the voltage at the terminals of the consumer and the cathode of another of these tubes being supplied in agreement with the variations of the current flowing through the consumer circuit.

   In order that the invention may be better understood, a preferred embodiment will be described below only by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.

   In the drawing, an alternating current electricity distribution is indicated by conductors 1, 2 and 3 to which is connected the three-phase primary winding 4 of a power or anode transformer whose secondary winding 5 is of the star distribution type, two parts of each branch of the star being formed by windings which are inductively coupled to two phases of the three-phase circuit, respectively. The outer ends of the secondary winding 5 are respectively connected to the anodes 6 of three rectifier tubes 7, 8 and 9 each of which has a cathode 12 connected so as to be supplied by the secondary winding of a filament transformer 13. whose primary winding is connected between conductors 1 and 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   From the winding 5 of the main transformer, the winding goes beyond the tubes 7, 8 and 9 to extend through the middle tap 14 of the secondary winding @ of the filament transformer, and through the conductor 15 of the filament transformer. consumer circuit, to the positive terminal of an accumulator battery 16, then via battery 16, conductor 17, resistor 18, reactors 19 and 22 and conductor 23 to the neutral point 24 of winding 5 of the main transformer. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the conductors 15 and 17 of the consumer circuit are connected so as to supply the charging current to the battery 16, although the flow of the rectifier assembly can also be sent. to any other desired consumer.

   A capacitor 25 is branched off from battery 16 and resistor 18 connected in series, while capacitor 26 is connected between supply conductor 15 and a point 27 of the junction entering reactors 19 and 22. The capacitors 25 and 26, together with the reactors 19 and 22, act as a filter which minimizes the pulses at the terminals of the battery, connected to the conductors of the consumer circuit.

   Each of the rectifier tubes 6, 7 and 8 comprises a control grid 28 whose control circuit comprises, starting from the cathode 12 of the corresponding tube: the secondary winding of the filament transformer 13, the conductor 15, a rheostat 29 for adjusting the voltage; a control resistor 32 connected in series with the supply conductors 15 and 16 and in parallel with the battery 16, a conductor 33, a capacitor 34, a resistor 35, a conductor 36, a capacitor 37, a conductor 38, the neutral point of a pulsating transformer 42, one or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the other of the phase windings of the transformer 42, a circuit conductor 43, a resistor 44 and the grid 28 of the tube 7,8 or 9.

   The three-phase windings 42 of the pulse transformer are inductively coupled to the corresponding phases of primary windings 45 which are supplied with three-phase energy by the conductors 1, 2 and 3. Two control transformers having respective secondary windings 46 and 47 are also inductively coupled to the primary windings 45. The control transformer 46 is connected to supply three-phase power to a six-phase group of dry rectifiers 48 which is connected to apply a DC voltage to the capacitor 37.

  The capacitor 37 is interposed so as to introduce a negative potential difference into the gate control circuit detailed above. The control transformer 47 is connected so as to supply three-phase anergy to a six-phase group of dry rectifiers 49 which is connected to apply a DC voltage to the capacitor 34 to introduce a positive potential difference in the control circuit to grids detailed above.

   A detector tube 52 is provided which comprises an anode 53 connected to a point 54 of the conductor 36, constituting the junction between the resistor 35 and the capacitor 37, and a cathode 55 connected to the terminals 56 and 57 of the control resistor 32. Note that the voltage across cathode 55 of the detector tube, which corresponds to the voltage drop across resistor 32, is a measure of the voltage between conductors 15 and 17 of the consumer circuit, which is applied to the battery 16.

   The resistance of the rheostat 29 can be varied for adjusting the voltage so that when the desired voltage is applied across the terminals of the battery 16, the voltage across the resistor 32 and hence the heating of the cathode 55 have an inter-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 medium, which makes it possible to give an intermediate intensity to the current sent by the source represented by the group of rectifiers 49 in the resistor 35, the tube 52 and the conductor 33, so that there is a voltage drop IR intermediate to the bounded resistance 35.

   If the voltage between conductors 15 and 17 increases beyond this intermediate or desired magnitude, the voltage across cathode 55 of tube 52 increases accordingly, thus increasing the heating of cathode 55 and the conductivity of the tube. 52, which increases the current flowing through tube 52 and the IR voltage drop across resistor 35. As the IR voltage drop across resistor 35 introduces a negative voltage component into the circuit. fired between the cathodes 12 and the control grids 28 of the tubes 7, 8 and 9, the flow rate of these tubes decreases when the conductivity of the tube 52 increases, so that the voltage applied between the conductors 15 and 17 decreases.

   Conversely, if the voltage between conductors 15 and 17 falls below the intermediate value for which the detector tube is set, the decrease in the heating of the cathode 55 causes a decrease in the conductivity of the tube 52 and, for example. Therefore, a decrease in the current flowing therein, so that the negative potential difference or voltage drop across resistor 35 decreases, making gates 28 more positive with respect to cathodes 12 and increasing the voltage supplied. through tubes 7, 8 and 9.

   There is further provided a detector tube 62 which comprises an anode 63, connected to the conductor 36 at the junction point 64, and a cathode 65 whose terminals are connected to the terminals of the resistor 18 connected in series with the. conductor 17 of the consumer circuit and with the battery 16 that is being charged. Tube 62 works exactly the same @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 so that the tube 52 except that its cathode 65 is sensitive to the voltage drop across resistor 18, which is a measure of the current flowing in conductor 17 of the consumer circuit.

   If the current to battery 16 increases beyond the desired current, the increasing conductivity of tube 62 caused by the increasing voltage applied across cathode 65 determines an increasing current of the group of cells. rectifiers 49 to resistor 35 so as to increase the negative bias of the grids 28 of the rectifier tubes 7, 8 and 9 and thus to decrease the voltage supplied to these rectifier tubes. Conversely, a decrease in the current flowing through series resistor 18 has the effect of decreasing the current in the local circuit of rectifier group 49 and resistor 35.

   The apparatus can be set so that as long as the current in resistor 18 does not exceed a certain predetermined intensity, the effect exerted by tube 62 on the grid control circuits of tubes 7, 8 and 9 is negligible, the tubes being controlled substantially entirely by the detector tube 52 until the current flowing in the comforting circuit reaches the maximum desired intensity allowed, while beyond these operating conditions of the consumer circuit tube 62 takes over control of the apparatus in order to substantially limit the current consumed to the desired intensity.
