 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     Conformément à l'invention les caractéristiques des parties de la grille sont utilisées séparément et on

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Electric discharge tube, with electronic brushes controlled by deflection.

   The present invention relates to an electric discharge tube in which the electrons coming from the cathode are united in one or more beams and its object is to provide a tube whose slope is adjustable in a suitable and uniform manner.

   It is already known to manufacture electronic tubes comprising one or more variable-pitch grids or provided with grids between which the distance is unequal in various places in order to ensure a more gradual lowering of the slope when the voltage negative grid increases, namely "badly blocked" or "variable U" tubes. Indeed we can imagine that the characteristic of the ano-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 dic / grid voltage of electron tubes is made up of the characteristics of small parts of the grid. If we observe, for example, a grid provided with openings having different dimensions, we can imagine that the characteristic of the tube is composed of the characteristics of each separate opening.

   If it is assumed for convenience that the characteristic of a single opening can be represented by a straight line, it can be indicated as in fig. 1 some characteristics of these openings. In this figure the lines having the greatest inclination represent characteristics of the smallest openings of the grid. In composing these lines it is found that, indeed, the slope of the "sum characteristic" gradually decreases because the individual lines have different slopes.

   If the distance between two grids is not uniform everywhere, it is possible to indicate for the different places of a grid the same characteristics as those shown in fig. 1, so that electric discharge tubes provided with grids, between which the distance is variable with location, will also have a sum characteristic, the inclination of which will gradually decrease. Until now we always worked with this characteristic of sum. This leads to the drawback that in the case of adjustment on a fairly steep slope the anode current is much greater than would be necessary to obtain this slope. In fact, the smallest openings, through which therefore a relatively small electronic current passes, give a characteristic having a strong inclination.

   The much larger electronic current which passes through the large openings is then added to it, which is also evident from FIG. 1.

     According to the invention, the characteristics of the parts of the grid are used separately and we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 can achieve a very continuous transition between these different characteristics. For this purpose an electric discharge tube is constructed comprising one or more electronic brushes, in which deflector members and two or more grid-shaped electrodes are successively placed in the path of this or these brushes, so as to creating in a face of the grid struck by the electronic brush (s) a non-uniform potential such that the whole of the electronic brush (s) can be controlled by an external cause towards a part of the grid where a determined characteristic prevails.

   A non-uniform potential can be produced in a very simple manner in a grid face, for example if we make the location, the distance between this grid face and another grid face variable.

   If different tensions are applied between the deflector members, the brush will sweep the points of the grid where different characteristics prevail. In the case where the grid wires extend parallel to the direction in which the electronic brush (s) can be deflected, the transition between the different characteristics will be very gradual and will not be, so to speak, shifted for each new opening, which would be the case when the wires of the grid extend in a direction perpendicular to the direction of deflection of the electronic brush or brushes.

   An electron tube according to the invention therefore has a slope capable of being varied considerably, and the achievement of steep slopes is only limited by an unreasonable increase in the anode current.

   An electric discharge tube according to the invention is particularly suitable, for example, for mounting with

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 automatic sound volume control, where the voltage of the automatic sound volume control can be fed to the deflector members, so that the tube, depending on the signal strength, can adjust to a defined characteristic , that is to say on a specific slope.

   The invention will be better understood by referring to FIG. 2 which represents, by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment thereof, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing naturally forming part of the invention. In this figure, the electric discharge tube and the system combining the electrons in a beam have not been shown.

   The electronic brush 1 in the form of a wide and thin strip is deflected to the right or to the left by the plates 2. Depending on the voltage between the deflector plates 2, this beam will therefore reach different en- rights of grid 3. By varying the distance between grids 3 and 4, a different anode current / grid voltage characteristic will prevail for different points of grid 3, so that depending on the tension between the plates 2 the tube will operate with different characteristics. Because the bars of the grid extend in a direction parallel to the direction of deflection of the electronic brush, the transition between the different characteristics will be very continuous.
