Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  En   (BB')   la pyrogénation se poursuit par un dégagement gazeux riche en CO et H2 et de goudrons contenant une plus forte proportion d'hy- drocarbures; en même temps le coke produit, essentiellement consti- tué par du carbone libre et des cendres, devient incandescent. Dans la zone (C C') les produits volatils formes sont soumis à une haute temperature en présence du coke incandescent formant catalyseur, les composés oxygénés de toute nature tendent à se dissocier et à réagir sur le carbone libre pour donner de   1''oxyde   de carbone, les hydrocarbures tendent   également   à se dissocier pour donner de l'hy- drogène et du carbone qui, suivant les conditions, se dépose sous   forme de carbone amorphe ou de graphite ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Improvements to continuous furnaces for the carbonization of solid fuels., For the production of gas rich in hydrogen.

   The technical operation resolved by the invention, which is the subject of this patent, constitutes an improvement in the results which can be obtained by the application of the provisions of French patents no. 814,963 filed on July 21, 1936, m. 815.894 filed June 6, 1936 and n. 834,716 filed on March 3, 1938 which consist in obtaining, from fuels such as coal, lignite, and generally all solid fuels, a gas containing the maximum amount of hydrogen and (or) carbon monoxide; the Co H2 ratio by volume) having a certain value fixed in advance.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   We know that the pyrogenation of solid fuels gives rise, apart from the gases H2 and C0, to a mixture of other gases among which we find Co2, CH4, C2H4 and, generally, CmHn, all these gases can be decomposed by heat. with the concomitant action of carbon and water vapor, so that all the carbonated carbon can ultimately give CO and all the released hydrogen can be in the pure state. Only very small and easily removable amounts of all the gaseous constituents considered as undesirable are then left in the gas produced.

   To obtain such a result industrially, it is customary, in particular in the application of the aforementioned patents, to operate the pyrogenation of solid fuels (commonly called distillation) in continuous vertical furnaces similar to gas factory furnaces, but in in which the distillation gas follows a downward movement in the same direction as the fuel which gives it birth; in addition, at the lower part of the vertical chambers or retorts in which the operation is carried out, advantage is taken of the presence of incandescent coke - from the distillation of the treated fuel - to manufacture a large quantity of water gas on site. ; ultimately the retort or chamber is traversed:

   over its entire length by solid fuel in the process of gasification going from top to bottom, in its upper part by the distillation gas itself going from top to bottom and, finally, in its lower part by gas with water going from bottom to top. It is therefore necessary to provide on the chamber or retort a gas outlet located at a height such that on the one hand the distillation gas is decomposed by heat and by its contact with carbon (coke) and that, on the other hand, the contact time between the incandescent coke and the water vapor is sufficient for the formation of a good quality water gas.

  These conditions define, depending on the hourly tonnage used-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and from the straight section of the chamber or retort, both the height. total of the device and the ratio between the two parts defined by the position of the gas outlet.

   Until now, the gas outlet, placed at a more or less elevated level of the chamber or retort, was constituted by a lateral pipe inserted into the masonry and, preferably, on an unheated wall.

   The invention, which is the subject of the present patent, consists essentially in various new provisions relating to the gas discharge channel and to its appendices, provisions of which the characteristics and technical advantages result from the description and explanations which will follow. to follow:
Fig. 1 shows a section through the vertical planes XX 'YY' passing through the discharge channel.

   Fig. 2 represents a section through the vertical plane ZZ 'and shows one of the small faces of the distillation chamber.

   Fig 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the chamber.

   Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section by the planes OR 'on the left and VV' on the right.

   Figs. 5, 6 and 6 'represent ,, in horizontal section of the particular modes of construction of the discharge channel.

   The distillation chamber (1) has a rectangular horizontal section; this section is usually increasing from top to bottom in order to facilitate the descent of the fuel introduced in (2) (2 ') in the raw state and extracted in (3) (3') in the coke state, by waterproof mechanisms known per se and not shown in the figure.

   In the middle part of the chamber is located a vertical channel 4-4 ', the walls of which are formed by refractory bricks, of suitable shape, connected to the bricks forming the walls of the chamber. This vertical channel is in principle, but not necessarily, double; it extends, as shown in fig. 4, @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 across the width of the room. In order to increase the ratio of the heating surface to the passage section, it is possible, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 6 ', increase the number of through holes.

   The walls of the chamber are heated, as usual, by vertical flues (5) into which open staged burners (6) in a suitable number and arranged such that the temperature regime along the wall corresponds. - having regard to the height of the chamber and the speed of passage - to the heating law that one wishes to impose on the fuel to be treated. The burners (6) receive the air and the heating gas by adduction flues, arranged in a known manner, as can be seen in fig. 1, fig. and fig. 4 (right part).

   Over the entire height of the chamber corresponding to the discharge channel are also arranged, in a suitable number, burners (7) (7 ') similar to the wall heating burners, but characterized in that they are independent. and that they can be switched on or off or individually adjusted according to the heating regime which is desired to be imposed on the gas discharge channel.

   The chamber is divided at the bottom by a low wall (8) which divides the mass of coke into two fractions, respectively discharged through the outlets (3) and (3 ').

   The heights hl, h, b3 (fig.3) are determined from experience according to the nature of the fuel used, according to the composition of the gas to be produced and according to the tonnage distilled per hour; the relative values of these heights thus determined constitute one of the important characteristics of the system.

   As has been said, the gasification operation comprises an injection of water vapor for the production of gas to the water according to the reaction: n C + m H2O #x CO + y CO2 + z H + t H2O + n'C equation in which x, y, z, t, and (n - n ') are a function of the @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 temperature, contact time and reactivity of the coke.

  Depending on the composition of the gas you are looking for and. particularly if one wishes to modify the ratios and x it is, necessary to 8in- yz, to j ect the vapor in such or such point of well determined temperature and corresponding moreover to a duration of action of the vapor more or smaller. For this purpose, the walls of the chambers have steam inlets (9), (9 ') (9 ") ... etc ..... arranged at different heights and receiving the steam (overheated) from a general pipe fitted control valves and flow controllers (one valve and one controller for each steam inlet).

   When we distill fuels rich in sulfur, in particular lignites, we notice that the hydrogen sulphide, which tends to be produced during the 'pyrogenation, reacts with the coke at high temperature and this all the more so as coke is more reactive, to give rise to carbon disulfide and other compounds, in particular organic compounds, which are difficult to get rid of during purification, conversely carbon disulfide and various organic sulfur compounds, in the presence of hydrogen and especially water vapor, can give rise to hydrogen sulphide under certain conditions of temperature and concentration.

   Since it is desirable to obtain the sulfur in the form of hydrogen sulfide to more easily extract it from the gas by the current purification processes, it is sought to produce the conversion of CS2 to HS by using, in accordance with the invention, the passage of gas in the discharge channel.

   As has been said, this channel can be heated independently of the heating of the chamber; furthermore, in order to modify the proportion of vapor in the gas which passes through it, a vapor inlet is provided at (10) in the separation wall (8). This steam inlet is supplied by the general superheated steam pipe and the flow is regulated by a valve and a flow controller; the vapor emerges into the chamber by means of openings (il) (il ') arranged in such a way as to avoid ob-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 structions by coke.

   Independently of the effects already described, heat, acting at the same time as the steam, intervenes for the conversion of methane and other hydrocarbons following various reactions of the following type: CH4 + 2 H2O # CO2 + 4 H2. These reactions require temperature conditions and concentrations which are facilitated by the arrangements which are the subject of the present invention.

   The operation of a gasification chamber is, in principle, as follows:
The fuel (boiling, lignite ... etc ..:} is introduced through orifices (2) and (2 ') and gradually moves from zones (A A') to zones (E E ') under the influence extractors (not shown) placed beyond the openings (3) (3) At (A A ') pyrogenation begins which gives rise to a complex mixture of gas rich in CO2. CH4 and other hydrocarbons and - tarry fears rich in oxygenated compounds of the phenol genus.

  In (BB ') the pyrogenation continues with a release of gas rich in CO and H2 and in tars containing a higher proportion of hydrocarbons; at the same time the coke produced, essentially consisting of free carbon and ash, becomes incandescent. In zone (C C ') the volatile products formed are subjected to a high temperature in the presence of the incandescent coke forming a catalyst, the oxygenated compounds of all kinds tend to dissociate and react with the free carbon to give the oxide. of carbon, the hydrocarbons also tend to dissociate to give hydrogen and carbon which, depending on the conditions, is deposited in the form of amorphous carbon or graphite;

   the formation of amorphous carbon takes place mainly under the catalytic influence of the ferruginous ash, under determined conditions of temperature and concentration, it must be sought because it corresponds to an increase in the reactivity of the mass. In zone D the incandescent coke, but already partially cooled, gives gas to the water under the influence of the injection of steam from @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 of the channels (10) (la ') and also under the influence of the steam coming from the sprayed water or from the injected steam, to cool them, in the extraction devices placed in (3) ( 3 ').

   As a result, in zone (E E ') the coke is cooled to a temperature such that extraction can take place without difficulty. In zone (C C ') there are two gas streams, that coming from the upper part consisting of the distillation gas largely converted, and that from the lower part consisting of water gas. ; these two mixed gas streams are discharged through the central channel (4) (4 ') where they undergo the thermochemical actions defined above. Completion of the conversion of hydrocarbons, sulphide, carbon and other constituents.

   It is specified that the method of construction of the gasification chamber, its shape and its dimensions are not binding: the general arrangements of the components and in particular those of the evacuation channel (4) (4 ') and steam feeds (9) (10) (11) constitute the essence of the invention characterized by the 'operating diagram described above.

   By way of example of a non-compulsory embodiment, FIG. 5 shows the assemblies of the bricks of special shape constituting a seat in the central region of the gasification chamber.
