    Maps, posters, signs, etc., provided with a weather-resistant surface protective layer, and method of manufacture thereof.

   The present invention relates to maps, posters, signs or the like, the surfaces of which are made durable and weather resistant on one or both sides by coating with the aid of a coating. a protective layer in transparent synthetic materials. '
It is in the known domain to make resistance

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 weather, by coating with a solid lacquer, maps or similar objects. Attempts have already been made to achieve the same goal by plating transparent synthetic materials based on cellulose derivatives or polymerization products on the cards and applying these materials in the form of thin sheets.

   The first of these processes has the drawback that the lacquer covering the surfaces of cards or posters breaks down over time and can no longer, therefore, fulfill its function.

  In the plating of sheets of solid synthetic materials, one comes up against the drawback that this work must be accomplished in heated presses and that one is consequently bound by the formats of these presses. Also, large cards can only be coated with this plating in sections. In addition, the cards thus treated, even when only very thin sheets are applied to them, have the disadvantage that they cannot be folded back, because, in the long run, these sheets break up. place of folds.

     In accordance with the invention, the drawbacks of the surface treatment of maps, posters, signs and other similar objects are avoided by the fact that a thin plasticized plastic sheet is used as the protective layer. thermoplastic synthetic materials, such as, for example, polymerization products of vinyl halides or products of mixed polymerization of vinyl halides with other unsaturated organic combinations, polyamides or polyurethanes with or without the addition of plasticizers. The expression "plasticized thin sheets" is understood here to mean sheets of thermoplastic synthetic materials which, due to the nature of the polymerization, already have a high degree of plasticity.

  Plasticity can then be further increased by the addition of plasticizers. These thin sheets thus plasticized fulfill in a remarkable way the function which is required of them.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the buses, for example, the geographical maps which are coated with them, not only are insensitive to the meteorological influences, but also better resist wear and tear; rures.

   To connect the thin sheets to the surface to be treated, the reverse side of these sheets is provided with an adhesive film made of an aqueous dispersion or emulsion based on the same raw materials. therefore, when a specific product of mixed polymerization is used for the manufacture of the thin sheet, an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of the same product of mixed polymerization is spread on one side of this sheet. We can then stick the thin sheet, while it is still wet, on the card.

   For this bonding of the thin sheet, an advantageous procedure is characterized in that the adhesive film which is on the thin sheet is first dried and this sheet is then put in a state to be bonded. by moistening it lightly with alcohol, acetone or other suitable solvent, after which this sheet is applied directly to the card or to the printed paper. In the latter procedure, the adhesive layer softened with the aid of the volatile solvent dries extremely quickly and thus facilitates the sticking of the thin sheet on cards, posters, signs, etc.

   Depending on the climatic conditions in which the geographical maps, posters and signs are used, films are preferably chosen for the coating which offer great resistance to cold or heat.

  In cases where the surface is exposed to large temperature variations between cold and heat, polyamides and polyurethanes, for example superpolyamides, are particularly satisfactory as a raw material for thin films.
