 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   se sont révélés d'une telle influence sur la marche du gazogène que l'on a dû renoncer également à la forme   cylindrique   du prolongement qui, théoriquement, s'offrait comme la forme optimum.   Bien   que la disposition d'un prolongement conduise, à l'opposé des formes de gazogènes antérieures, à une large des-   truction   du goudron, il s'est manifesté de nouveaux problèmes à résoudre au cours de la tentative faite pour supprimer com- plètement la formation du goudron, A la suite d'essais qui ont duré de longues années, on a ainsi mis sur pied une forme du prolongement qui se raccordant à une transition   cylindrique   qui doit encore être expliquée, présente à peu près la forme d'un diabolo ;

   en d'autres termes, cette partie du prolongement se ré-   trécit   tout d'abord à partir de sa face limite supérieure pour arriver à une section minimum et ensuite s'évaser à partir de cet étranglement jusqu'à une face limite inférieure. En combi- naison avec cette disposition on prévoyait déjà aussi une ali- mentation d'air relativement basse;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

        sur la gazéification des combustibles les plus divers s'expli- quent d'eux mêmes, Car, grâce à l'intensification, le fait n'im- porte plus de savoir si un combustible donné est soumis aux ré- actions dans une mesure plus parfaite et si une autre oombus- tible l'est moins, quand on réussit à assurer pour chaque oom- bustible une gazéification qui est au moins égale à la gazéifi- oation que l'on peut obtenir sans difficulté dans un prolonge- ment à partie en forme de diabolo, adapté à un combustible dé- terminé.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Mais il devait 6tre r6v516 que J.influenae de la condensation de la zone de réaction qui est pcmiso par la suppression du compartiment cylindrique d'arrivée de l'air est tellement paré- pond6rante que l'on produit, avant O#TQ1IG après, le. gazéiiiaa- tion qui est nécessaire pour assurer uns marche irréprochable du Gazogène;

 l'air est introduit entre ltextr6rúté supérieure et l'extrémité ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

     A la lumière du dessin, il apparaît clairement surtout le fait que le volume de la chambre de réaction est plus petit.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

    "Gasifier operating with combustion, deodorant and process for its marohe".

     Gasifiers are already known which operate with descending combustion, preferably employed for the gasification of fuels which form tar, provided with an extension which attaches to the narrowing of the vessel and which projects overhang in the hollow. of the tank. These gasifiers, used mainly for the generation of motive power for motor vehicles, have, by virtue of this design, the property of automatically adapting to variations in the speed of the engines used to operate these vehicles.

   It is particularly during the idling of the combustion engine that one maintains in the prolongation of the narrowing of the tank.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 these high temperatures which are necessary to decompose the tar vapors contained in the gas produced, so that these do not separate after leaving the gasoline and cannot cause disturbances in the running of the engine at combustion.

   This extension was first of all given a twisted by .. factly cylindrical shape because it was considered that this shape was an ideal preliminary condition to be able to adjust the reaction zones of the extension according to the speed of the gasoline at different heights. of the extension, but all other conditions being equal, ::

  In addition, it was believed to favor, by the cylindrical shape of the Inadaptation extension, the external reaction zone which forms between the extension and the walls of the gasifier which delimit the hollow of the tank and which, in addition to the realization of a series capital advantages serve to reduce the total height of the gasifier because the gasification processes which are not completed in the extension itself are terminated there, to variations in the speed of the gasifier given that at all heights the same section conditions exist for this reaction zone. but the practical operation of gasifiers with extensions of this kind has shown that the cylindrical shape of the extension does not allow optimum conditions to be obtained.

   Numerous other driving factors, such as for example the more or less strong trepidations during the circulation, the good or bad suspension of the vehicle chassis and starting from the gasifier itself, the use of the vehicle on bad roads which give jolts, on the one hand, and traffic on the asphalt roads of the city grades, on the other hand, fairly frequent and fairly long stops (omnibuses, transport vehicles which change direction and the like), as opposed to vehicles that have to travel long journeys without having to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 make stops of this kind (long-distance traffic),

   have been shown to have such an influence on the operation of the gasifier that we also had to give up the cylindrical shape of the extension which, theoretically, offered itself as the optimum shape. Although the provision of an extension leads, unlike previous forms of gasifiers, to a large destruction of tar, new problems have arisen to be solved in the attempt to eliminate completely. the formation of tar.As a result of tests which lasted for many years, a form of the extension has thus been set up which is connected to a cylindrical transition which has yet to be explained, presents approximately the shape of a diabolo;

   in other words, this part of the extension firstly narrows from its upper limiting face to arrive at a minimum section and then flares out from this constriction to a lower limiting face. In combination with this arrangement, a relatively low air supply was already provided;

   to this end, a cylindrical compartment was arranged between the narrowing of the vessel and the part of the extension in the form of a diabolo, in which the air supply nozzles were mounted. Instead of making the arrival of the air by nozzles mounted on the periphery of this cylindrical compartment, the arrival of the air is also made by a central nozzle or by means of same order
Gasifiers of this kind already meet the demands placed on them to a very high degree.

   They supply in particular, even in the presence of the weakest speeds, a gas free of tar and they show a great elasticity in the presence of the speeds - they increase by jerks, so that one can achieve with these gasifiers an irreproachable operation. even when operating vehicles that are heavily placed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 contribution in particular the automobile ocrions which circulate in the mountainous regions. Only one element has been shown to be disadvantageous, notably the relatively high sensitivity of gasifiers to a change of fuel.

   If the gasifier has the obvious adaptation to the vehicle and to the engine and to the operating conditions, it functions, if the fuel for which it has been designed, is used, quite satisfactorily and it exhibits the good qualities indicated. On the other hand, it is not possible to operate a gasifier designed, for example, for the gasification of wood, with the same good results, with peat, lignite or similar fuels. In the present case, on the contrary, it is necessary "to make use of gasifiers specially designed for the gasification of such fuels, in order that the desirable properties are again assured.

     The object of the invention, while retaining the indicated advantages of generators with extensions connected to a constriction of the vessel, is to design these so that the same gasifier can be used for different fuels.

     The solution, in accordance with the invention, of this problem again relies on numerous tests which have continued for years.

   These tests have first of all shown that it is necessary to intensify the processes which take place in the reaction chamber in order to come closer to the solution to be brought to the problem posed. This intensification is achieved by reducing the dimensions of the reaction chamber. In this case, in fact, higher temperatures are obtained, a more intense gasification, the heat losses are lower and the calorie content of the gases is higher.

   The effects of the intensification of the processes which take place in the reaction chamber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

        on the gasification of the most diverse fuels are self-explanatory, Because, thanks to the intensification, the fact no longer matters to know whether a given fuel is subjected to the reactions to a greater extent. perfect and if another fuel is less so, when we succeed in ensuring for each fuel a gasification which is at least equal to the gasification which can be obtained without difficulty in an extension to part diabolo-shaped, adapted to a specific fuel.

   But the reduction in the dimensions of the reaction chamber immediately gives rise to a drawback when this reduction takes place at the expense of the section. For the small sections give rise, owing to the greater charge of the substances participating in the reaction, to higher depressions of the gas. The specific volume of the gas is thus reduced so that the cylinder charge decreases. This is inadmissible for lean gases such as gasifier gases so that the reaction chamber must not be reduced by reducing the sections,
According to another finding which forms the basis of the invention, the solution is to be sought in the condensation path of the reaction zone in the direction of the axis of the gasifier.

   Other considerations have led to the observation that this condensation cannot succeed for the forms of gas genes customary until now, without giving up the cylindrical chamber which was available until now for the arrival of air directly to the air. above the part of the extension in the form of a diabolo.

   Until now, we did not believe that this paroe chamber could be dismissed as it provided, on the one hand, the possibility of bringing the air relatively low and that on the other hand it brought it so close to it. the vessel and par- tially from the shrinkage of the vessel as the temperatures

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 The high temperatures and the very high temperatures which manifest themselves in the reaction chamber within the extension are expected to have a favorable effect on gasification.

   In addition - we had, by giving a suitable size to the diameter of the cylindrical part of the extension which carries the heads of the nozzles, the possibility of removing these walls from Inaction

  But it had to be revealed that J. influencing the condensation of the reaction zone which is achieved by the elimination of the cylindrical air inlet compartment is so parependent that one produces, before O # TQ1IG afterwards, the. gasification which is necessary to ensure flawless operation of the gasifier;

 air is introduced between the upper extremity and the extremity;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 lower part of the extension.

   In an extension which exhibits, between the upper end and the lower end, variations with regard to the increase or decrease in the section, air is introduced at these changes in section. if we maintain the progressive narrowing of the extension from the upper end to its maximum constriction, from which the extension widens out to the lower end, air is therefore introduced. preferably at the level of the strongest throttle.

   Diabolo-shaped extension gasifiers for carrying out these processes are characterized in a further embodiment of the invention in that the portion of the extension which tapers from the upper end has an inclination of the walls which coincides or roughly agrees with the narrowing of the tank and which preferably connects flush with the narrowing of the latter.

  It is preferable for this that the section of the greatest shrinkage of the extension is equal to or only a little smaller than the section of the cylindrical chamber which has been used until now for the air intake. . Conveniently, the extension widens out from the section which has the greatest constriction to the lower end at the same angle, or approximately, as that under which the extension -Se narrows from the end greater than the section with the strongest shrinkage.

   The transitions between the narrowing of the extension and its flaring may however be rounded sufficiently so as to form a compartment of variable section or approximately at the height of the air inlet; in the same way, one can give to the prolongation, in the same place, a distinctly cylindrical shape on a short part of its axial path.

   The drawing schematically illustrates a given realization

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   by way of example, of the idea of the invention, a longitudinal cut is made in a gasifier with a double jacket, the intermediate space of which is used for the withdrawal of gas.

   The mixed lines first of all show the previously usual design of the gasifier. We recognize; the cylindrical part 1, 1 'of the tank which has a constriction at 2'.

  To this narrowing is connected the extension, predominantly in the form of a diabolo by an upper part, the walls 3 'of which are cylindrical; in !: the air inlets are spared.

  With the lower surface of the mouth of the cylindrical compartment thus formed 5 'matches the upper delimiting surface 6' of an extension part in the form of a diabolo.

  This part of the extension is first of all formed by a constriction of oonic shape 7 ', the smallest section of which is designated by the reference 8'. Attached to this retracted part 8 'is a flared part 9', the lower delineating surface of which is designated by the reference 10 '.

   The gasifier according to the invention differs from this advantageous form of gasifier construction, but which only gives good results with a certain fuel quality, by the following points.

   The narrowing ¯2 which connects to the part of the opening 1, is steeper than before; its inclination is approximately equal to the inclination of the constriction 7 'which has been born so far to the upper truncated cone of the diabolo in the usual extensions hitherto in the form of a diabolo.

  This achieves the possibility of giving the part '7 of the extension which tapers off from the upper bounding surface 6, a corresponding wall inclination! with the constriction 2 of the tank 1, to approximately, and to connect part 1 of the extension to the constriction 2 of the tank 1. The upper truncated cone 1. of the extension

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 narrows down to the surface 8 of the mouthpiece, the cross section of which is only insignificantly smaller than the cross section of the cylindrical compartment 5 ', through which the air inlet was previously ensured .

   From the place of the strongest constriction 8, the extension goes out to form part 8 which ends at 10.

   As the parts 7, 8, 9 constitute the actual hearth of the gasifier, they are, unlike the other parts of the gasifier, which are made of sheet iron, possibly lined with protective coatings in sheet brass or sheet metal alloys. aluminum or other suitable raw materials, an alloy resistant to the action of temperature, in particular an iron alloy containing chromium.

   At 11, the hearth is strongly rounded, so that it is possible to make the section of the narrowing 8 at a level corresponding to the mounting of the nozzle heads, almost without modification, so as to form a compartment for almost cylindrical. The reference 12 designates loading holes or tools and the reference 13 holes allowing the evacuation of ash and slag.

   In the downward direction the gasifier is closed in any way, for example by a sieve 14,
The gas produced rises in the compartment 15 between the interior part of the tank 1, the and the outer jacket of the tank 16 and is evacuated at 17. In a known manner, the internal part of the tank is thus placed. Often, in spite of the high temperatures which prevail in the neighboring part of the hearth, protected from oxidation and encrustation.

   As regards the effects of the form of gasifier according to the invention which constitute a fundamental advance, the necessary has already been explained above.

     In the light of the drawing, it is especially clear that the volume of the reaction chamber is smaller.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

  It is indicated approximately by measure 18, while in the usual forms of construction until now it is, in accordance with the arrangement of the compartment 5 'following measure 18', much larger and, moreover, it It should be taken into account that section 8 is larger than section 8 '. One thus obtains, on the one hand, by condensing the reactions on a smaller space, higher temperatures, leaving a stronger gasification with less losses of calories, so that finally, one has a gas with calorific value higher. On the other hand, we realize,. thanks to the fact that the constriction sections 8 are larger, weaker depressions of the gas with greater loads of the cylinder.

   The condensation of the reaction chamber in the axis direction with simultaneous flaring on seation 8 has this further advantage that it is possible to mount stirring devices, which was not possible until now because that these had to pass, over a relatively great length, in zones which, owing to their high temperatures and the excess of oxygen supplied, rapidly led to the formation of encrustations on these agitators, without taking into account the fact of the too great resistance which had to be overcome in this case.

   This quality of the new gasifier is of special importance for fuels which form slag, since it is not possible to dispense with preferably mechanical-acting organs for breaking up the slag and for removing the slag particles formed. when you want to operate a gasifier flawlessly. In unison with this advantageous property, the drainage of section 8 from section 8 'is added, so that this section can no longer become clogged with the slag formed as this occurs. in the form of an earlier gasifier.

   The formation of slag, in particular, occurs below

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 under the greatest shrinkage of the extension, and no longer, as previously, above it, so that the most considerable advantages are therefore realized from the point of view of rapid and unimpeded elimination slag. Finally, the reinforcement of the reactions inside the extension has a preponderant influence on the other reactions which its produced outside the extension, between the latter and the outer wall 17 of the gasifier.

   While this distribution has been characterized so far, in order of magnitude, by the fact that about two-thirds of the reaction takes place inside the extension and one-third outside it, all almost raotion can now be accomplished within the prolongation.

   As a result, we are independent, to a much greater extent than with the current form of gasifier, of the accumulation of fuel outside the extension, so that until now it has been - was necessary, for example, to make sure, before starting a wood gasifier, that a layer of wood was gathered on the outside of the extension, a layer of wood which allowed the reactions necessary to be accomplished at a rate of about one third outside the extension and two thirds inside the latter, it suffices to have, with the gasoline generators according to the invention, d '' in general, wood residues which accumulate when adjusting the rate of the gasoline,

   between the extension and the outer mantle of the gasifier.

  Further advantages result from the fact that the filling compartment of the inner part 1, 1 'of the gasifier tank is brought closer to the reaction zone. Sufficient gasification of the fuel is thus achieved. As a result of the reduction. - owing to the dimensions of the hearth compartment, the hearth ignites more quickly, which means that the gasifier is put into working order better than previously. The temperatures that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 reign in the hearth are sufficient of themselves for all gasifier regimes, to completely destroy the tar vapors formed. i
In the spirit of the invention, this is not; , not limited to the embodiment represented by the exemplary embodiment given.

  It has been observed * '5, for example, that we are not linked to the double trunk form of o8no of the extension, in other words to its form of a diabolo. One can, for example, give the whole of the extension, the shape of a section of a cone, the smallest surface of which would constitute the surface of the mouth. Tests to this end which have been made by third parties have shown, it is true, that the advantages in principle of the extension already employed for the earlier forms of gasifiers are manifested but that the sensitivity of the gasifier increases, even when the same fuel is used, to such a large extent that optimum conditions cannot be achieved. maintained only for specific operating conditions of the vehicle.

   If one is prepared to take this inconvenience on his own, one can obviously apply the measures proposed in accordance with the invention in the same way as in the prolongation.-slow in the form of diabolos, also to these oonic extensions. The invention is not limited either to the supply of air by nozzles. The air entering the narrows of the sections can be done in any other way, by central nozzles, by slot nozzles arranged at the periphery, by air inlet pipes introduced from above, or in any other way.

   The realization of the idea of the invention is also not linked to the fact that the gasifier, owing to the fact that it has a double jacket, must consist of an inner part forming an opening and a outer coat. When there is only one mantle at the upper part, the lower part of the gasifier can be directly designed according to the proposals of the invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

  , If the extension of the gasifier does not show variations as regards its increase and decrease, but if the section simply varies as such, it is necessary to arrange the air inlet at the level of the modification of section of the species.
