<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Method and apparatus for the manufacture of oilcloth, imitation leather, paper-leather and the like.
The present invention relates to a method of making imitation leather oilcloth, paper-leather and the like.
It is known that these articles are currently made by impregnating a support, consisting for example of canvas or of paper, with several layers of a product especially suitable for this use. This support thus impregnated is then passed through a graining machine which gives the desired grain or pattern to the material.
The present invention aims to allow, by simple means, the manufacture of such.articles on / 11

large surfaces and in particular without having to resort to such a machine.
According to the invention, the process consists in covering a surface, smooth or etched, with several layers of a suitable coating, in that on the last layer a suitable support is applied, for example canvas. , in such a way that this support adheres perfectly and in that the whole is finally detached from the plate using appropriate means.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the canvas or other support is, after its application, covered with one or more layers of the same coating, so as to increase its resistance.
The surface intended to be covered with plaster can be any engraved or plain plate, mat or smooth, available on the market or made especially for this use.
The detachment of the product from the smooth or engraved surface, usually takes place with the aid of a cable fixed to a bar which holds one end of the fabric and by regular traction exerted on the cable, the fabric loosens regularly. of the plate with the coating adhering to it.
The accompanying drawings show how the process can be carried out in practice.
FIG. 1 shows the different successive stages of execution of the method.
Figure 2 shows an example of a finished product.
FIG. 3 shows by way of example a device included for carrying out the method.
To carry out the process, we start with a surface 1, smooth or engraved, matt or shiny as appropriate, which rests on a frame 2 (phase A - figure 1).
This surface is covered with several layers shown in 3, with a suitable coating (based on cellulose,

synthetic resin or any other product), so as to obtain the desired thickness according to the number of coating layers (phase B - figure 1).
On the last layer, which will preferably be sufficiently tacky, the fabric or the support 4 is applied, so that this fabric or this support adheres perfectly to the coating (phase C - FIG. 1).
After this operation, the canvas or the support can be covered with one or more layers of the same coating, in order to increase the resistance of the finished product.
When this work is finished and after drying, -as indicated at 41 - is peeled off by appropriate means, from the surface 1, the canvas 4 provided with its layers of coating.
The product obtained is shown in D section in Figure 1 and in plan in Figure 2.
For carrying out the method, use can be made of a device such as that shown in FIG. 3.
This device essentially comprises a frame. 2 receiving the smooth or engraved surface intended to be covered with the layers of plaster and the support fabric 4, and a cable 5 passing around a pulley 6 and fixed to an iron bar 7.
This maintains, during detachment, one end of the canvas 4 suitably coated and is for this purpose formed of two parts joined together and between which the canvas is clamped after having passed around a cylinder 8 provided with rollers 9 by which the latter can circulate on the edges 10 of the frame 2. This roller drives the canvas as the cable pulls. On the side of the pulley 6, the cable 5 passes under a roller 11 mounted in bearings 12. The coated canvas will also pass under this roller, when all the take-off has been carried out.
By pulling on the cable 5, a regular pull is made on the bar 7 and consequently on the end of @

the fabric provided with the coating which adheres to it, this fabric thus peels off very regularly from the support plate resting on the frame 2.
Depending on whether the plate 1 is smooth, engraved, mat or shiny, a product is produced which conforms to the nature of this plate 1, and therefore smooth, engraved, mat or shiny, this article reproducing in relief the intaglio engraved design. on plate.
By a judicious choice of the colors used, it is possible to obtain a decoration comprising several tones and giving a more attractive aspect to the material.
This kind of work can be done on large surfaces; All that is needed is a number of plates corresponding to the desired length and connected to each joint.
Different types of plates, metallic or otherwise, which exist on the market; can afford a variety of designs inexpensively, which reproduce well on the plaster with which they have been coated.
By the process described, it is furthermore possible to obtain perfectly imitations of wood, the veins and pores of which are reproduced on the material employed.
As will be understood, the process which is the subject of the invention can be compared to a molding in which everything that is hollow on the plates used is reproduced in relief.
It can also be used for making articles with specific shapes, such as, for example, shoe uppers, galoshes, etc., in suitable molds.
