 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  MACHINE FOR FILLING BAGS.

   The present invention relates to an improved machine for bringing the bags to filling and more particularly for opening the bags and supplying them with the filling material when they are suspended. In automatic machines such as they are currently in use, it is customary to place the bags by hand on the suspension means, which entails the expense of the attendants, who can damage or destroy many bags and do not sometimes fail to properly position the bags on the suspension means. It has also been proposed to automatically open the bags with the aid of separate means, such as a plunger, and then to slide the bags on supports serving as a form for the bag.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a bag supply mechanism which, without the use of separate bag opening means, deploys the bags for their subsequent filling. The means for hanging the bags are therefore used at the same time for deploying them, so that the machine is relatively simple and compact.

   The invention therefore consists in that a bag carrier is provided with two members for deploying flattened bags, separating two affixed walls of the bags from each other when they are suspended from these members. , and in that a transfer device is intended to deliver the bags to these deployment members and to suspend the walls in question of the bags by their top each to one of the deployment members. In order to transfer the flattened bags to the deployment members, a suction head can be used which is connected to a mechanism intended to periodically swing this suction head from a substantially horizontal position for receiving the bag into an upright position for the bags. to the deployment bodies.

   This pneumatic transfer device can be used to facilitate the application of the bags to the deployment members by the fact that one end of the bag deployment members, for example a plate, has a projection directed downwards and a mechanism is established in such a way as to oblige the suction head to move the bag transversely to the two deployment members so that a notch for the thumb, provided in the end of one of the two walls of the bag, passes freely over it the projection while the opposite wall of the bag is retained by the projection, the mouth of the bag thus being opened slightly before being suspended from the deployment members.

   In order to avoid contact between the filling material and the deployment members during filling, the bag can

 to be suspended from this organ by the fact that a jaw jst

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 provided outside each of the two deployment members and forms, with the juxtaposed deployment member, a clamp for suspending a wall of the bag, a control mechanism being intended to periodically actuate the two jaws to open and close these pliers alternately.

  A curved guide is advantageously arranged such that during the travel of the bag deployment members from the bag transfer device, these members are moved apart, which deploys the mouth of the bag.

   The accompanying drawings forming part of the present specification show the invention.

   Figure 12 is a section through line XII-XII of Figure 10.

   In the operation of the machine, bags A in the form of gussets having at the top of one of the walls C a notch B for the thumb, are moved by a chain conveyor 3 laterally on a table 1 and introduced between rollers 6 and 7 intended to provide the mouths of the bags with recessed grooves for the subsequent folding back closure. From the rollers 6 and 7 the bags are sent to a table 8 from where they are successively taken by a sucking head 10 and transferred to a turret 11 from which they are suspended by their tops at station I (figure 8 ). As the turret 11 rotates, the hanging bags are deployed on their way to station II, i.e. they are open at their upper end, and at station II they are also deployed at their top end. bottom end.

   The turret 11 then brings the fully deployed bags to a station III where the bags are filled with material and fall onto a conveyor 12 which leads the filled bags to means not shown for closing and sealing.

   The endless chain conveyor 3 has thrust members 2 and moves on a chain wheel 4 fixed to the drive shaft 15 and on a chain wheel 5 mounted idly. The shaft 15 is rotated by a chain 54 and a shaft 55 which is actuated via a bevel wheel 56 from the main drive shaft 57 of the machine. To the shaft 15 are fixed two grooving rollers 6 which cooperate with the two grooving rollers 7 mounted so as to be able to rotate above the rollers 6.

   The table 8 is pivoted about a spindle 14 and is provided with a stopper 9 against which the bag supplied to the table rests when the table is turned downwards to the receiving position. bag, shown in solid lines @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 in Figure 3. The table 8 is connected by a connecting rod 16 to a lever 60 which, by means of a cam 17 fixed to the shaft 15, periodically rotates the table up and down between the position inclined reception of the bag and the horizontal flow position of the bag, the latter being shown in chain lines. The suction head 10 has at its upper end a slot 77, is provided with a perforated suction plate 18 and is attached to a pipe 20 which can move longitudinally in an arm 25 attached to a rotating shaft 19.

   The shaft 19 is also fixed to an arm 21, which is connected by means of a connecting rod 22 to a lever arm 24 actuated by a flat cam 23 fixed to the shaft 57. The suction head 10 is connected to the arm 25 by means of tension springs 26, so that the suction head can be lifted against the tension force of the springs which tend to hold the suction head down so that the closed lower end of the pipe 20 is retained in engagement with a head 58 provided on a lever 59. The lever 59 pivots on a spindle 80 and is actuated by a cam 61 fixed to the shaft 55. The pipe 20 is connected to a flexible pipe 27 which is connected via a changeover valve 28 and a suction pipe 29 to a suction pump 30.

   A cam 72 is attached to the shaft 55 and actuates the valve 28 such that the suction pipe 29 is in communication with the flexible pipe 27 when the suction head 10 takes a bag from the table 8 and delivers it to the table. turret 11, after which the suction in the pipe 27 is interrupted by the fact that the valve 28 allows air at atmospheric pressure to enter the flexible pipe.

  The turret 11 has circumfé.2enciellea, went four paices of plates 31 and 32 which serve as deployment members of the bag. The plates 31 and 32 each have a tongue 33 directed downwards and having substantially the same configuration as the notch B for the thumb in the bag,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 but slightly narrower than this notch. The outer bag deployment plates 31 are each attached to a pair of rods 35 which project radially from a rotating disk 39 forming the main part of the turret II. A circular guide plate 34 is fixed to a socket 37 attached to the machine frame and a vertical drive shaft 36 can rotate in this socket and is suspended therefrom by means of a thrust bearing 38.

  To the shaft 36 is fixed a Geneva wheel 62 which is actuated by jerks (of a quarter turn), by an arm 63 which is fixed to a vertical rotating shaft 64. To the shaft 64 is fixed a wheel of gears 81 which meshes with another toothed wheel 83, fixed to a vertical rotating shaft 82.

  The shaft 57 drives the shaft 82 by means of a bevel gear 84. The turret disc 39 serving as a rotary conveyor is attached to the shaft 36 below the guide plate 34 and is provided with four guides. uniformly arranged around the periphery. Each guide consists of two pairs of madly rotating rollers 40, between which can move longitudinally a drawer 41 which is bifurcated at its outer end and carries a guide roller 43, which moves in a curved groove 42 of the guide plate. fixed guide 34. At the bifurcated outer end of each drawer 41, one of the inner plates 32 for opening the bags has been fixed. To each rod 35 have been attached two downwardly directed guides 44, in which a pin 45 can move lengthwise of the rod 35.

   The pins 45 are connected at their inner ends by a cross member 85 and at their outer ends by a bag jaw 47. Each pin 45 is provided with a compression spring 46 which pushes the pin inwardly into the pin. the direction of the shaft 36, so that the jaw 47 placed beyond the outer plate 31 where-

 plate. On the inner side of the inner bag opening plate 32, there is provided another jaw 48 which pivots on the drawer 41 about an axis 66. The drawer 41 is provided with an opening 49. A spring for compression 101 is mounted between the jaw 48 and the stop 49 to push this jaw against the plate 32.

   The fixed guide plate 34 is provided, at the bag receiving station I, with a rod 50 disposed radially which is intended to move back and forth longitudinally. The rod 50 is provided at its external end with two stops 51 and 5 intended to respectively open the jaws 47 and 48. At its internal end, the rod 50 is articulated to a lever 13 which is actuated by a cam 53. attached to a rotating shaft 86 to periodically reciprocate the rod 50.

  A swing lever 87 is attached to the rotary shaft 86 and is connected through a connecting rod 88 to a lever 89, which is actuated by a cam 90 attached to the shaft 82 to effect periodic swinging movements. .

     At station II operates a rectangular plunger 67 which is attached to a vertical rod 68. The rod 68 can slide in a guide 91 and a pin 92 is inserted transversely into this guide and starts a chain wheel 93 which can turn. on the ankle. The chain wheel 93 is operated by means of a chain 94 from another chain wheel 95 attached to the shaft 55. The wheel 93 is attached to another chain wheel 96 and a chain 98 runs on this. wheel as well as on a crazy mounted 97 chain wheel.

  The rod 68 is connected by means of a connecting rod 99 to the chain 98 so that as the shaft 55 rotates, the rod 68 performs long up and down movements to move the plunger 67 in it. open mouth of a bag to the bottom of the bag, deploy the bottom of the bag and then remove the plunger from the bag. bag upwards, after having thus fully deployed the bag suspended from the plates 31

 and 32 deployment of the bag.

   At station III there is provided a bag filling device (not shown) having a filling spout 71 for supplying material from a scale (not shown) to the bag which has finally been. deployed by plunger 67. Further, at this station, a pair of stops 73 and 74, similar to stops 51 and 52, act to open jaws 47 and 48. Stops 73 and 74 are attached to a rod 75 which can be moved longitudinally, i.e. radially relative to the guide plate 34.

   A pivoting arm 76 fixed to the shaft 86 actuates the rod 75 to cause the jaws 47 and 48 to open through the stops 73 and 74 when the rod 75 moves outward away from the shaft 36, the bag being then released from the disc 39 of the turret and falling on the conveyor 12.

   When a bag is picked up by the suction head 10 on the table 8 which is pivoted upwardly anteriorly or simultaneously, the bag is rotated from its horizontal position (shown in chain lines in Figure 5). up to a vertical position. As a result, the wall C of the bag passes by means of its notch B for the thumb along the tabs 33 of the two plates 31 and 32, while the opposite wall D of the bag abuts against the tab 33 of the plate 31. L ' mouth of the bag is thus opened slightly to allow the suction head, when it is lifted by the lever 59, to slide the mouth of the bag on the plates 31 and 32 (figures 5 and 10), at the same time as the rod 50 keeps the jaws 47 and 48 away from the plates 31 and 32.

   The suction head then embraces by its notch 77 the jaw 48. The rod 50 is then moved inwards, so that its stops 51 and 52 allow the jaws 47 and 48 to be placed elastically against the plates 31 and 32 and to pinch sides C and D of the bag at their upper edges. Valve 8 is then reversed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 to allow air at atmospheric pressure to enter the flexible pipe 27 and the suction head 10, so that the latter releases the bag. The suction head is then brought down to the position shown in FIG. 10, so that the jaw 48 does not meet the suction head during the movements of the bag towards the station II.

   At the same time that the turret 11 transports the bag to the station II, the drawer 41 is withdrawn, that is to say moved inwards, by the roller 43 circulating in the curved notch 42, so that the inner clamp formed by the plate 32 and the jaw 48 is moved inward (Figures 6 and 8), attracts the wall C of the bag radially inward and deploys the mouth of the bag completely, the bag taking a rectangular shape in cross section.

   The plunger 67 then enters the bag and also deploys it at its bottom which thus assumes the same rectangular shape in cross section as the mouth of the bag. The bag having been thus completely deployed, this brought by the turret 11, with two advancements, to the filling station III, while it is suspended from the clamps 31, 47 and 32, 48 kept apart under the control. of the guide groove 42. The bag is then filled and released by the clamps as described above.
