 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 EMI5.1
 I. B<g0 0&0 + aq. + 12 - 2Mg 0&% + aq

   According to the invention, a product obtained starting from dolomite, consisting mainly of calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide, is used as binder. This product can be obtained,

  When using the dolomitic product containing MgO, described above, the addition of slimming agents can be omitted and hence the mixing operation can be omitted.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   since said product contains the calcium component as a slimming agent, which component exists in the form of calcium carbonate, either due to the fact that the cooking is carried out carefully, or thanks to the recarbonization of the fully cooked product.

   When using the dolomitic product described, not only is it possible to considerably simplify the working process, it, owing to the elimination of the need to mix additional products, but, as tests have proved, Dolomitic paints are further distinguished by their excellent quality compared to magnesite paints.

   This superiority seems to be due to the fact that, in the said dolomitic product, the two main constituents, namely free magnesia and calcium carbonate, exist under a particularly active base of douole salt, favoring the phenomenon of setting between magnesia and magnesium chloride.

  However, it is also possible that this setting phenomenon is only favorably influenced by the molecular mixing of the two main constituents, which is impractical, even with the best mixing methods and with the greatest fineness of grinding, when magnesite is used. and fillers.

   The magnesium chloride content of the paint is, among other things, characteristic for the setting capacity, this content having, moreover, of capital importance from the point of view of the paint resistance to weathering.

   During tests, it was found that the magnesium chloride content of paints in dolomitic colors is appreciably lower than that of paints in magnesium colors. According to the composition of the dolomitic colors, in order to create the same conditions for the tests, corresponding mixtures of colors with magnesite were produced.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   It is obviously possible to activate, by additions of magnesite, dolomites treated in the manner described above, which have a lower magnesia content, such as dolomites containing too high a proportion of fillers, which is disadvantageous for the tackiness, can be used for the manufacture of protective colors.

   It must therefore be considered that the progress made by the process according to the invention over the processes known hitherto resides in the fact that the manufacture of protective colors can be carried out without the admixture of agents. thinning, and that, due to the unforeseen behavior of the dolomitic product during the setting process, the paint is characterized by its good adhesion to the base coat, its weather resistance and its flame retardant properties.

   Furthermore, it has been observed that the ratio existing, in dolomite, between its two components, namely the calcium and magnesium carbonates, which is approximately a stoichiometric ratio, cannot be shifted too strongly to the detriment of magnesium carbonate; because otherwise the component consisting of calcium carbonate and acting as a slimming agent, existing in the dolomitic product used in the process described above, would have the effect of considerably reducing, or even completely destroying, the setting capacity between magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride.

   This is also the case when the ratio between magnesium and calcium is indeed approximately stoichiometric, but when, for example, due to too little firing of dolomite, only part of the magnesium carbonate has been transformed into oxide. magnesium.

   Living the invention, such a weak cooking product, as obtained in large quantities as a by-product in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 industry, as well as half-baked limestone dolomites or dolomitic lime, therefore products with a significantly lower magnesium content than that of normal dolomite, can be mixed with a product which is also produced in starting from dolomite and containing mainly MgO, so that the said products become useful in the manufacture of colors.

   It goes without saying that the product rich in MgO can be used independently of said dolomitic materials, optionally by adding slimming agents.

   The product rich in MgO, made from dolomite, is distinguished not only by its advantageous price compared to that of fired magnesite, but also by the fact that the double salt nature, which is characteristic for dolomite, is retained. in part. The preparation can take place as follows.

   Dolomite is fired below the agglutination temperature. The baking product, which is mainly composed of MgO and CaO, is, either in the quenched state, or in the non-quenched state, ground in the form of powder and is suspended in a lye of magnesium chloride, in stirring until the following reaction occurs:
 EMI5.1
 I. B <g0 0 & 0 + aq. + 12 - 2Mg 0 &% + aq
The MgO is decanted from the calcium chloride solution above, and is cooked until the adsorbed water and water of hydration are removed.

   In order to recover magnesium chloride. the remaining solution of calcium chloride can be reacted with crude dolomite ground in powder form, according to the formula:
 EMI5.2
 II. ucip + 14% +, 8 + e. ¯ D8Cla + 2ù <% + aq.

   The magnesium chloride recovered can be brought back into the circuit in the reaction according to formula I.

   The transformation according to I does not take place quantitatively, so that there exists, next to the MgO, a certain percentage of a
