Monsieur Lucien JEANTHON
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
de la fig. 1,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Mr Lucien JEANTHON
The subject of the present invention is a mallet for mechanical work, stamping, sheet metal work, etc., distinguished by a certain number of features which give it particular qualities. - of strength, ease of use, etc. .. and justify as a whole the qualification of a new industrial product.
According to the invention in particular, the parts of the mallet subjected to impacts are formed by blocks of wood or other suitable material which are attached and mounted in a metal head in which the handle fits. blocks can they be easily replaced after wear or deterioration by continuing to use the other parts of the mallet which, as a whole, by reason of its constitution, has a solidity which considerably prolongs its use and a reduction in volume which Significantly improves handling.
This mallet is represented in substance and only by way of example by 'le. attached drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal view partially in section,
Fig 2 is a corresponding plan view of the mallet head,
Fig. 3 is an end view, from the side of said head,
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken along line IV-IV of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 1,
Fig. 6 shows, in cross section, a variation of the wedge causing the severed end of the handle to be pulled apart.
This mallet essentially comprises a head a made of steel or other metal having the general shape of two truncated cones contiguous by their large base. In its two end parts corresponding to the small bases of the cones, cylindrical housings b-b are formed in which the blocks c are embedded. hardwood or other suitable material which constitute the working elements of the mallet, subjected to shocks resulting from the use of said mallet.
These blocks are fixed by means of nails of screws or the like.
In the middle of the head at and transversely is formed a recess e formed of two truncated cones widening outwards and which serves to fit the handle f of the tool.
This handle f, made of hard wood, has a conical part fl corresponding to one of the cones of the recess e. and which, towards the end, is extended by a cylindrical part divided into four sections by two perpendicular saw cuts gg, this end of the handle parting into the corresponding conical part of the central recess of the head , under the effect of a force-driven steel wedge h.
The external part of the handle may be cylindrical, but preferably comprises two flats 1-1 thanks to which the tool is better in the hand and does not tend to turn.
This spacing wedge can, in accordance with the indications in fig. 6, be provided in the form of a crosspiece k, the wings of which engage in the indentations of the end of the handle, with a view to accentuating the separation effect of its severed part. Said corner could also be of square or other section.
The severed end of the handle protrudes a few millimeters from the outer wall of the head a. This outer part of the severed end of said handle, not being kept circularly, thus has a tendency to open out somewhat and to form a sort of fungus which opposes untimely separation.

of the head and its handle.
Owing to the construction of the massive part of the mallet, comprising the metal head fitted with its impact blocks, it will be noted that, for equal weight, its volume is notably smaller than if it were established entirely in wood or other suitable material, and that, therefore, said mallet is much more handy.
The blocks c which, in most cases, will be of hard wood, can be of any other substance, plastic of any kind, leather or the like.
Of course the metal head of the mallet, instead of having the general shape of two trunks of cone opposed by their large base, could be cylindrical or any other suitable shape.
Moreover, it is of course understood that the present description as well as the indications of the drawing, have no other aim than to specify the characteristics of the invention and that the latter, in its realization, is capable of all variants which do not exclude said characteristics.
-Summary-
The object of the invention is, as a new industrial product, a mallet for mechanics and boilermakers, characterized above all by all of the following features which, however, can be applied separately.
1 The head of the mallet is made up of a metal part comprising two opposite housings in which are fitted, but in a removable manner, blocks of hard wood or other material which are held by nails, screws etc. and which form the working elements of the tool.
