    "SYSTEME D'ALIMENTATION A TENSION MINIMUM D'UN RELUS DE CIRCUIT DE VOIE A DEUX ALIMENTATIONS OU DE TOUT APPAREIL
A COURANT ALTERNATIF A PLUSIEURS ALIMENTATIONS"

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI2.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

    "MINIMUM VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM OF A TWO-POWERED TRACK CIRCUIT RELUS OR OF ANY DEVICE
ALTERNATIVE CURRENT TO MULTIPLE SUPPLIES "
This invention relates to the circuit for adjusting one of the power supplies of a device with several power supplies) with a view to obtaining its operation with the minimum voltage of the source supplying this circuit.

   In certain known systems, attempts have been made to reduce the voltage of a power supply to the device, while maintaining regular operation of the oelui-oi, by causing only the phenomenon of resonance by interposition of an inductor or a capacity between the source and the device, fig. i and 3 of the accompanying drawings.

   This solution has the drawback that the reduced voltage obtained is not the minimum voltage ensuring regular operation of the apparatus.

   In fact, this operation still depends on the phase angle differences of the currents flowing through the device under consideration.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 EMI2.1
 We have also produced systems 9 U #) 8 which ensure the proper phase shift between the supply currents of the apparatus by placing chokes, resistors or capacitors between a source and the apparatus, as shown for example. Figures 1,2 already mentioned and Figures 3,4,5,6.

   These systems have the drawback that it is possible to further reduce the voltage of the source while also causing the phenomenon of resonance.

   The aim of the present patent is to remedy these drawbacks by means of a system placed between a power supply source and the corresponding terminals of the apparatus and which makes it possible, by adjusting the elements that it comprises, to cause the phenomenon of resonance while allowing to adjust the phase angle shift of the current flowing through the apparatus with respect to another synchronous current required as the origin.

   This result is obtained by modifying the value of two impedances: one placed in series in a power supply of the apparatus ensures the phenomenon of resonance, and the other placed in shunt on the same power supply, either upstream or downstream of the first impedance, makes it possible to adjust the phase angle of the current of this supply relative to one of the other synchronous currents supplying the device.

   Fig. 7 of the accompanying drawings shows, by way of non-limiting example, a diagram of the embodiment of the present invention.

   Between the terminals A and B of a power supply of the apparatus represented schematically by a rectangle r and the terminals of the source A 'B', there is an impedance 1 which, crossed by the supply current, causes the phenomenon of resonance, taking into account the presence of an impedance placed at the terminals of the device at 2 or at the terminals of the source at 2 '.

  The impedance placed in shunt in 2 or in 2 'acts so that the current passing through the apparatus would offset the angle of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 phase 'desired with respect to another supply current of the incoming device, for example, through terminals a and b. The sources a 'b' and A 'and B' are synchronous; The impedances are made from capacitors, read by means of coils, / or coils and capacitors and are adjusted to an inductive or capacitive value according to the nature of the characteristics of the sources and of the device to be supplied.

   In order to illustrate this invention, we will consider, by way of example, a practical embodiment applied to the disc relay with two supplies used in signaling of railways.

   A disc relay with two power supplies is composed, as shown in fig. 8, in perspective, of a conductor disc ii wedged on its axis 12 carried by two bearings 13 and 14.

  The disc 11 rotates in the air gap of two magnetic circuits each provided with a winding.

   Winding 15, called "track", receives its current from the "track" circuit; the other winding 16, called "local", receives its current from an independent source called local.

   The "channel" and "local" currents are synchronous. The "channel" winding 15 creates a flow #v which generates a current in the disk 11. The flow #L is created by the local winding 16.

   The reciprocal action of this current induced in the disc 11 and of the local flux #L, turns the disc 11, which actuates the contacts of the relay. It is known that the intensity of the torque rotating the disk depends on the intensity of the currents which pass through the two windings 15 and 16. as well as on the phase angle shift between these two currents,
In order to provide a better understanding of the above description, the particular case of the alternating current track circuit using, for signaling railroads, a disc relay with two power supplies such as that referred to above will be considered below. .

   The principle of the alternating current track circuit

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 consists in splitting the track into sections which are electrically independent for the control alternating current and which are perfectly linked to each other from the point of view of the direct traction current. This result is obtained by placing, at the ends of the track sections, impedances of very low ohmic resistance, thus allowing the direct traction current to pass, but the inductor of which stops the alternating current.

  These impedances have received the name of "induotive connections" and are designated C I in the diagram shown in fig. 9. The track circuit relay is designated as R. The arrows indicate the direction of the return direct current. In fact, a fraction of the alternating current flows through the induotive connection. On the other hand, the isolation of the rail filas from each other is not perfect. The voltage and current available at the end of the section on the relay side are therefore very low. It is in particular to obtain, in spite of these unfavorable conditions, a control on, that we created the sensitive electrodynamic relays with two power supplies mentioned above.

   It is also known that, at constant currents in the windings, the intensity of the torque of the relay is maximum when the phase shift between the currents is 90.

   This motor torque applied to the disc must, in order to obtain correct operation of the relay, be at least equal to a minimum value. The voltage of the local source being constant, this minimum torque will be obtained for the minimum voltage of the source "channel" of the relay, if, between this source and the corresponding winding of the relay, a system is placed making a minimum the impedance of the circuit connected to this "channel" source - so that the "channel" current passing through the "channel" winding of the relay is maximized by the phenomenon of resonance - and on the other hand, bringing the phase angle between this "channel" current and the current flowing in the local winding at the optimum value of 90.

   The example of the track circuit relay is only given as an indication, the application of the system covered by the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 present invention awaiting all AC devices having multiple synchronous power supplies.

   In this example, the 110-volt AC network; 50 periods, directly supplies the winding of the so-called "local" relay R. The other winding is connected to the same network via the channel of which the output step-up transformer T R V can be considered as the "channel" source of the relay.

   The voltage between rails must be minimized so that the leakage currents passing from one rail to another, and the power taken from the network to supply the track circuit; are minimum.

   To this end, it is necessary to ensure the operation of the relay for the minimum voltage of the source coming from the channel: We have seen above that this optimum operation of the relay will be obtained by simultaneously causing the phenomenon of resonance on the "channel" side. "and the offset of 90 between the local current and the track current. The characteristics of the relay and of the track circuit considered are such that, in order to meet these conditions, the impedances of the supply circuit had to be set to a capacitive value and, as shown in fig. 10 ', the impelance C2 mounted in tap-off on the power supply must have been placed downstream of the impedance @ mounted in series C1; it is therefore placed directly at the terminals of the "track" winding of relay R.

   The advantages obtained by using the diagram of fig. 10 instead of that of FIG. 9 are as follows:
Possibility of making longer track circuits without increasing consumption.

   For the same length of the track circuit, consumption can be reduced by more than half, while obtaining safer operation of the relay.

   The operating mode of the system can be explained more precisely by the vector theory of electrical quantities.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   Fig. it represents the modified part of the track circuit diagram, that is to say the TRV transformer for supplying the "track" winding of the relay, the two capacitors Cs and 0 P and the "track" winding of the relay. relays are V the voltage at the secondary terminals of the transformer,
V 'the voltage across the "track" winding of the relay,
V "the voltage at the terminals of the series capacitor Cs; the voltage V is assumed to be constant, the track circuit being free.

   This diagram can be reduced to the simplified diagram of FIG. 12.

   The influence of the series capacitance Cs can be explained as follows: the impedance equivalent to 1 t set formed by the parallel capacitance Cp and the choke coil of the "track" winding, is still selfic. From the point of view of the voltage distribution, the circuit is therefore equivalent to the capacitor Cs in series with an impedance equivalent to that of the "channel" winding shunted by the parallel capacitor Cp.

   The voltage diagram of such a circuit in accordance with FIG. 13, is simple and shown in fig. 14: Re and Le denote respectively the resistance and the choke of the aforementioned equivalent impedance, W Le 1 denotes the voltage component due to the choke Le, and Re I denotes the voltage drop in the resistance, finally is the voltage component due to the capacitance Cs.

  W Cs $ the resonance
W LeI - I / W Cs and if the voltage V remains constant, the current I takes on a maximum value which is no longer limited except by the value of the ohmic resistance of the equivalent circuit fig. 15.

     At resonance we see, according to fig. 16, that the voltage V 'at the terminals of the "track" winding is the vector sum of the voltages.

     V - Re 1 and W 1.6 1
Now, this voltage V 'is applied to the terminals of the parallel capacitor Cp and causes a current Icp, represented by a vector out of phase 90 forward on V', to pass through it.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   The voltage V 'is also applied to the terminals of the "track" winding of the relay and causes a current Ir to circulate therein such that the ohmic drop that it creates in the resistance of the "track" winding, increased by the drop. Inductive due to the self of this winding traversed by this current, gives the voltage V '. The sum of the currents Icp in the parallel capacitor and Ir in the relay is equal to the total current I flowing through the series capacitor.

   The phase shifts' of the "channel" and "local" currents with respect to the "channel" and "local" voltages respectively are constants for a given relay: Now, V is phase-shifted by a constant angle with respect to the voltage local
The phase shift between these currents can therefore only be modified by modifying the phase shift between the voltages V and V '.

   This is obtained by modifying the value of W LeI, that is to say of the equivalent self Le; that is to say, finally by modifying the value of the parallel capacitor Cp.

   To maintain resonance, the value of the series capacitor Cs must be readjusted. The diagram shows the considerable increase in current in the "track" winding that this assembly allows to achieve. By resonance, the current I passing through the equivalent impedance reaches its maximum value for a voltage V at the terminals of the transformer and for a "channel" winding resistance of the given relay. This current I is broken down veotorially into two other currents of greater intensity; the larger of these two currents is the current flowing through the "track" winding of the relay. The diagram in fig. 16 is only given to explain the allu; re phenomena, it is not at the eohelle.

   In the particular case of the track circuit relay, as in any AC device with two synchronous power supplies, the phenomenon of resonance can be created in only one of the two power supplies and the current of the other power supply can be phase-shifted. to that of the resonant circuit:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

This way of proceeding has the drawback, in addition to that of applying only to the case of an apparatus with two supplies, of requiring the adjustment of the apparatus in the circuits of two different sources; the same result can be obtained by adjusting devices in one of the two sources only by the claimed system. As far as possible, the low voltage and low current source is then chosen.
