 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  "Device for measuring short times"
The invention relates to a device for measuring short times, in which a capacitor is charged via a resistor during the time period which is to be measured. It relates in particular to a device of this kind, in which the duration of the discharge of the capacitor is lengthened by a time amplifier, in such a way that it can be measured without difficulty. When a capacitor is charged rapidly through a relatively low resistance and then slowly discharged through a high resistance, the discharge current is known to turn on. re of an exponential curve.

   As a result of this mathematical property, the exact coordination of an abscissa value with an ordinate value given in advance can no longer be carried out with the required precision, that is to say that the end of the time period which is to be measured and which has been amplified by a certain factor cannot be determined with precision.

   According to the invention, these difficulties are eliminated by the fact that, in order to fix the moment at which the slowly decreasing voltage of the capacitor reaches a determined minimum voltage, use is made of reverse coupling, known per se. whose control voltage at a resistor is coupled with the voltage at the discharge resistor, preferably via an electron tube o The minimum voltage in question then depends,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of, in the manner known per se, the ignition voltage of the tubes provided in the reverse coupling and their grid voltage, which is adjustable. The reverse coupling can, for example, electromagnetically control a watch, so that the measured time can be read.

   The use of measuring watches as an indicating device in devices for measuring short times working according to the capacitor method, is already. known per se.

   An exemplary embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a diagram of the time amplifier coupling according to the invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 show diagrams illustrating the principle of solution applied by the invention.

   The grid circuit of a tube 8 comprises the time amplifier circuit, while the tubes 16 and 17 belong to the reverse coupling. The time amplifier circuit is formed by a capacitor 5 and the two resistors 4 and 6, the resistance 4 in front being very low compared to the resistance 6.

  At the start of the measuring operation, both contacts 1 and 2 are closed. The measurement time is given by the time difference between the opening of these two contacts.

   In the idle state, the grid of tube 8 is positive. Contact 1 is open first. As a result, the short-circuit of capacitor 5 is eliminated and this capacitor can be charged via the low resistor 4 until, the flow of current is interrupted by the opening of contact 2.

  At the same time, the tube 8 acquires a negative gate voltage.

  The capacitor 5 now discharges via the strong resistor 6, which is at the same time in the grid circuit of the tube 8. During the discharge of the capacitor 5 via the resistor 6, it does not. therefore no current flows in the anode circuit of tube 8.

   The voltage drop sa produced in resistor 11 under the effect of the quiescent current is greater than voltage 14, so that the negative voltage 14 is compensated and the tube 16 has, in the quiescent state, a positive gate voltage.

  The anode current from tube 16 produces, at resistor 18, a voltage which causes tube 17 to block completely. Before the start of the. time to be measured, instrument 33 therefore does not indicate current.

   After opening contact 1, tube 8 acquires a voltage

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 negative, so that the current becomes zero in the anodic circuit. The positive voltage at 11 no longer exists and the grid of the tube 16 becomes negative under the effect of the voltage 14. There is therefore no current flow through the resistor 18. As a result, the grid of the tube 17 acquires a potential. cathode and current flows through circuit 15, 17, 23, 22, 21. The voltage drop that occurs at 15 makes the grid of tube 16 even more negative, so that this state remains completely stable. This state is not modified either by the opening of the contact 2, given that the tube 8 is still still blocked under the influence of the time amplifier member.

   It is only with the increased discharge that the anode current in tube 8 is slowly reestablished.

  Therefore, the voltage drop occurring in resistor 11 slowly increases. When the voltage increases at 11, however, there comes a time when the sum of the voltages of 11, 14 and 15 becomes zero.

   At this moment, the grid of tube 16 therefore acquires a cathode potential. An anode current is produced which brings negative voltage to the grid of tube 17. But as a result, the anode current of this tube is blocked. The voltage at resistor 15 then becomes zero and, therefore, the gate voltage of tube 16 becomes more positive, so that this state is also stable.

   Fig. 2 is a graphic representation of the evolution of the voltage at the capacitor. The voltage at resistor 11, at the output of tube 8, is given by the dotted line curve 8 '.

  During charging, the current decreases until the tube is completely blocked, and then gradually and slowly reestablishes with increasing discharge. If the moment of the reversal of the two successive tubes 16 and 17 is given by the line in dotted lines 16 ', the reversal occurs at the moment when the load or discharge curve intersects this straight line.

  Fig. 3 shows the evolution of the current in the anode circuit of tube 17. In the diagram, there is therefore a rectangular evolution 5 'of the current, which exactly limits the amplified time.
The new device for measuring short times is mainly applicable in combination with electromagnetically controlled watches, which are connected to terminals 23, possibly with the interposition of current-enhancing coupling elements. The measurement time can then be read directly on this watch, taking into account the time amplification factor.

   Instead of contacts 1 and 2, any other suitable triggering devices can be used which can also be controlled directly by a projectile in flight. Thus it is for example possible to charge the capacitor at using a tube coupling, which is controlled by cells
