<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Bi-plate diode for decimetric waves".
In UHF technology, diodes are used for both modulation and demodulation. In the assembly there is a need for demodulation of diodes. biplates which have an internal resistance as low as possible and a very low capacity.
This desideratum can only be satisfied with very short waves when the anode-cathode spacing of the diodes is as small as possible and in particular only represents fractions of a millimeter. In tube art, proposals have already been made for the construction of diodes in which the anode-cathode spacing is less than 1/10 m / m. However, considerable construction difficulties arise from the fact that the distances between the electrodes cannot be kept constant owing to the thermal expansion which occurs under the influence of the heat given off by the cathode, so that during walking there are variations in capacity and sometimes even short circuits.
It is also not possible to determine in advance the expansion of the electrodes and their fixings due to the fact that the heating is uneven. There is already known a triode with planar electrodes in which the cathode, the grid and the anode rest via their periphery on the grained edges of a ceramic body stamped in the manner of a cylinder. pot.
It is not possible, with this arrangement, to maintain spacings of a few hundredths of a millimeter, because uncontrollable variations in spacing must necessarily occur when the ceramic body and the electrodes unthread.
The invention relates to a construction with which it is possible to obtain diode spacings of 5/100 m / m and less and to maintain them also during walking.
At the same time, this construction offers the possibility of achieving a very symmetrical two-plate arrangement.
According to the invention, the cathode of the indirectly heated diode is arranged on an insulating body and the anode, the active surface of which is parallel to the cathode, rests on the insulating body under the pressure of a spring. .
The suspension of the anode on the insulating body is done in such a way that the distance between the surface of the anode and that of the cathode is determined by protrusions carried by the anode or the insulating body or by intermediate layers of a determined thickness, for example by films welded to the edge of the anode.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Fig.l shows a two-plate diode in cross section and Fig.2 the same in longitudinal section.
In FIG. 1, reference numeral 1 designates an insulating body of ceramic material in which a passage intended to receive the heating wire is formed. On the surface of this body
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
insulation is deposited / an emitting layer which is designated by the reference 2 in fig. 2. The arrival of the current at the emission layer is made by a flexible tape 3 which is welded on fig 4. The anodes of the two diode sections
5 and 6 are formed by two sheet metal elements the surfaces of which facing the cathode are adapted as exactly as possible to the curvature of the surface of the cathode.
The anodes carry on the edges which protrude the emission zone, each two spacers 7, 8 which are formed by thin metal bands which adapt to the curved shape of the anode surfaces and which are joined together. wheat therewith, for example by spot welding.
The thickness of these spacer strips is calculated so that the desired spacing between the cathode and the anode is equal to the thickness of the metal strip minus the thickness of the emitting layer after it has solidified. It is essential from the point of view of the invention that one achieves such a fixation that when the cathode and the parts of the anode heat up the distance between the cathode and the anode does not change and that variations in the length of the cathode socket and the current supply wires do not affect the fit. This is achieved by fixing the anodes elastically to the tie or fusion welded wires so that they rest with uniform pressure on the insulating body of the cathode.
The cathode can then be securely fixed between the two anodes so that it is no longer necessary to provide any support for the cathode. The anode springs are represented by tabs 11 and 12 which are fixed to the supply conductors 13 and 14.
The exemplary embodiment which has just been described relates to a two-plate diode. It is, however, possible to realize, taking into account the above points of view, a simple diode which offers the same advantages from the point of view of maintaining the distance. To this end, the cathode is held rigidly by one or two fusion-welded wires, while the anode rests under spring pressure on the insulating body of the cathode. The prescribed spacing between the cathode and the anode may, as above, be ensured by spacers in the form of films.
Then, the spacing between the cathode and the anode can be determined by forming a hollow on the surface of the insulating body, the area of which is approximately equal to that of the emission zone. In this case, the anode can land its intermediate layer directly on the surface of the insulating body. The sleeve which carries the cathode layer is advantageously, with a view to making good thermal contact, fitted directly onto the insulating body. In this case, the insulating body has a coefficient of expansion smaller than or equal to that of the material of the sleeve.
In order to achieve an emission surface as clean as possible, the cathode can be formed by a strip with semi-indirect heating which is placed around the insulating body and which is maintained under tension by springs.
The advantage of the process according to the invention is that it makes it possible to keep entirely invariable distances as small as desired between the cathode and the anode. It therefore makes it possible to build diads which have an extremely small internal resistance and a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
very low capacity. With these small electrode spacings, which are suitable for receiving very short waves for reasons of duration, above all, the consistency of the spacing is ensured over the entire surface of the cathode. This prevents the flattening of the characteristic line or the reduction in the curvature which otherwise occurs when the spacing is irregular; we increase the recovery effect.
The possibility of decreasing the cathode area relative to ordinary diodes, provided by the reduction in the spacing, also allows for small and extremely small input voltages, the displacement of the working point in the domain of the space charge. and therefore offers here also the possibility of linear rectification.
