<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Improvement in the manufacture of cords of fibrous material.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of cords of fibrous material impregnated or coated with a combustible solid material. It is known to prepare cords or threads of this kind by passing them through a molten bath of the impregnation material and then pulling them through a series of dies, which operations can be repeated until the impregnation has received the desired quality and the bead or wire has received the desired shape and dimensions.
In the known methods the pulling of the cord or thread is carried out by winding the cord on a transportable rotating drum, which, when full, is detached from the winding mechanism and placed in a device for a following pulling operation or any other desired treatment of the cord, while a new empty winding drum is placed in the winding device.
However, this process has serious drawbacks. The winding drums, already heavy in themselves, represent with
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the wound cord has a fairly considerable weight, which requires special means of transport and a large number of workers only for the removal and installation of the drums. As the winding drums must have a relatively large diameter so as not to subject the cord to too much sagging and as their number must be relatively large to allow pulling without long interruptions, they give rise to considerable bulk and their weight. is only increased. The cords or wires used in these processes are relatively weak and break easily, thus giving rise to frequent work interruptions.
These and other drawbacks are eliminated by the process according to the invention, which is essentially characterized by the fact that the bead or thread, after having passed through the impregnation bath and after having been drawn through a series of dies, is wound on one of the two rotating drums carried in a stationary device, and when it is full, the drum is released from its motor shaft, the winding being continued on the other of said drums, the cord being unwound from the first of said drums to go through a second pulling process or another processing process.
The main advantage of this method is that the drums always remain in the winding device which simultaneously forms the unwinding device, any transport of the drums, either by hand or by mechanical means, being eliminated. Unwinding can begin almost immediately after winding is completed, minimizing downtime and cord length during manufacture. The number of drums in use is greatly reduced, as well as the manpower, and the risk of damaging the finished cords or during transport between the various stages of manufacture is eliminated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The invention also comprises a device for carrying out the method named above, which is essentially characterized by a winding mechanism serving to feed one or more strands successively through a bàin of a molten combustible impregnation material. and a number of dies, the winding mechanism comprising a pair of winding drums for each cord rotated by motive force and each connected to its motor shaft by an individually disengageable coupling device.
The invention applies with advantage to. the manufacture of well-known wax matches, which generally consist of a string or thread impregnated and covered with stearin or the like, pieces of suitable length of this string forming match sticks which are provided with a dough head flammable at one end. However, the invention relates more especially to cords consisting mainly of a strip of paper pleated generally in the direction of the length and impregnated with paraffin or the like, these cords advantageously replacing the known cords consisting of a wick of twisted textile fibers coated with a layer of stearin or the like.
These characteristics and advantages of the invention and others emerge from the following description of an embodiment of the invention suitable for the manufacture of cords of paper impregnated with a flammable solid material, reference being made to the accompanying drawing. .
Fig. 1 schematically shows in elevation a device for implementing the method.
Figs. 2 and 2a show in plan, each a part of the device illustrated in FIG. 1.
The illustrated device comprises ten roller magazines 1 from which a corresponding number of strips of paper 2 are unwound.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
These bands pass over two blocks 3 and 4 of stearin, wax, talc or other material having a lubricating effect and are pressed into contact with these blocks by free-running rollers 5 arranged between the blocks. The surface of the paper web is smoothed by the friction against the blocks and the lubricating effect of stearin or the like facilitates passage of the webs through the pleating devices. The pleating device consists of funnel-shaped nozzles 6 preferably of circular section, one nozzle being provided for each of the paper strips. These are by their passage through the nozzle from the flat state first folded on themselves in the form of a tube.
After the nozzles 6, a number of dies 7 can be provided corresponding to the number of bands, these dies having a cross or star-shaped section giving the paper band a pleating of corresponding shape.
The strips of paper thus pleated are passed through one or more open containers 8, these being two in number in FIG. 2. Five strips of paper are therefore passed through each of the vessels 8. These vessels, which are suitably heated, contain a bath of molten impregnating material, for example paraffin with a small addition of Carnuba wax or any other material with a similar effect. This small addition, which is preferably about 5, substantially improves the mechanical properties of the set impregnation material. The bands are immersed in the bath by cylindrical rollers 9 carried in free rolling on a fixed shaft.
On leaving the bath, each of the strips passes through one or more dies 10 and 12 and thereby receives a section of preliminary or final shape. The dies are preferably heated, which can be done electrically either by resistance or by induction, or by heat ductility by part of the support.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
port of the die which soaks in the hot impregnation bath, The band is then passed over pulleys 13 and 14 and turned back to be immersed a second time in the impregnation bath and to pass through new dies 10, 15 and 16, the first of which may be formed by a die hole drilled in the same block 10 as the hole through which the strip passes immediately after the first passage through the impregnation bath.
The cord spinning described above is carried out under the action of a winding mechanism comprising two winding drums for each cord. In the drawing the figures 17, 18, 19,
20 and 21 each denote one of these pairs of drums, in which the drums arranged one above the other are denoted by the letters a and 1, Thus for example, the pair 17 comprises the drums 17a and 17b.
The drums 17a, 17b, 18a, 18b, 19a, 19b, 20a, 20b, 21a and 21b are carried on horizontal shafts 23a, 23b, 24a, 24b, 25a, 25b, 26a, 26b, 27a, and 27b respectively - Eventually, these shafts forming a right angle with the direction of movement of the cordon, Each of the groups of shafts 23a - 27a belonging to the upper drums 17a - 2la and 23b - 27b belonging to the lower drums 17b - 21b, are actuated by a common motor 28 by means of suitable transmission means, Each of the drums is connected to its shaft by a coupling 22, by which each drum can be individually engaged or disengaged from its shaft. This coupling is preferably friction-type in order to allow sliding making possible the smooth and smooth movement of the drum.
A winding drum with its coupling 22 is arranged at both ends of shafts 23 - 27, each shaft thus carrying the upper or lower drums of two pairs 17 and 29, 18 and 30, 19 and 31, 20 and 32,21 and 33 respectively. The shafts are of different length, as shown in Fig. 2, so that each drum is freely accessible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
sible from its outer face. The couplings 22 are preferably of such construction that they can be actuated from the outer center of the drums.
The cords are each individually connected to one of the drums in the different pairs and wound onto these drums by engaging the respective couplings 22. As shown in Fig. 1, the cords are connected to the upper drums 17a - 2la on which they are wound. The cords wound on the lower drums 17b - 21b in a previous spinning are simultaneously unwound and led through a second spinning device comprising the same elements as the device previously described except for the funnel-shaped nozzle. On leaving this second device, the bands or cords are wound on drums arranged in a manner analogous to the winding mechanism described above.
In this second spinning and winding device, the different parts bear the same references as the corresponding parts of the device described first.
In the second spinning device the cords can be pulled with greater speed than through the first. Since a cord unwound from any of the drums of the first winding mechanism can be wound onto any of the drums of the second winding mechanism, the number of drums or pairs of winding drums in the first and the second of the mechanisms may be inversely proportional to the speed, with which the cords are drawn through the spinning devices in question.
If for example the speed of the cord through the first spinning device is 2 set and through the second 5 m / s, the number of pairs of winding drums in the second winding mechanism can be 2/5 of the number pairs of winding drums in the first winding mechanism.
In the drawing, the first winding mechanism thus comprises
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ten pairs of drums, while the second mechanism has only four.
From the last winding mechanism, the cords can be passed through a subsequent spinning device of the type previously described or they can be transferred to another processing method.
It has been found suitable to pass the strips of paper through three or four spinning devices arranged in series one after the other and each comprising an impregnation bath, the nozzles, dies and winding mechanisms belonging thereto. On leaving the last spinning, the cords or threads of paper are sent to a machine for cutting into rods of the desired length and to provide said rods with an end by dipping them in a flammable paste in the known manner for the manufacture of ordinary wooden matches. The pleated paper web forms a skeleton, so to speak, within the paraffin mass and gives the finished product high strength and rigidity.
The paper chosen must be of good quality and must have a high elasticity combined with a high tensile strength in order to avoid frequent breakage of the bead as it passes through the pleating device. In certain cases, it will be convenient to carry out the pleating in several stages by placing several nozzles one behind the other.
It is obvious that the method described can be modified in several points without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The first pleating can for example be carried out as well after the passage of the paper strip through the impregnation bath or even while the strip is still immersed in said bath.
In this case, the lubricating device represented by blocks 3 and 4 and the roller 5 can be eliminated, and the first die can simultaneously serve as a pleating nozzle. To facilitate this pleating in the die, folds or
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
longitudinal corrugations on the strip by passing it between two rollers with peripheral grooves. If necessary, it is also possible to eliminate the second soaking of the strip on leaving the drying loop formed by the pulleys 13 and 14 and to pass the cord directly from the pulley 14 through a die to the winding device.
The second pulling process can only form a bead polishing treatment and consist of a simple quick soaking of the bead in an impregnation bath and a subsequent pulling through a heated die, the drying loop on the pulleys 13 and 14 can be significantly reduced or eliminated entirely. The number of drawing processes, the presence or absence of impregnation baths and drying loops, the number and configuration of the dies, the degree of their heating as well as the speed of passage of the bead through each process can be varied as desired depending on the nature of the materials used and the quality of the desired product. By suitable conformation of the dies one can obtain any desired section of the bead, for example square or polygonal.
From the constructive point of view it is also possible to have recourse to several different alternatives. The container for the impregnation material can for example be made in one piece for all the webs drawn in the same machine, as shown in FIG. 2a, or two or more containers can be provided, through which the bands are passed in groups or individually.
The dies can also be combined into blocks with holes for several cords, as shown in Fig. 2, or they can consist of individual dies with only one hole as shown in Fig. 2a. The construction of the winding device can also be varied in different ways. It is not absolutely necessary that the drums be carried on stationary axes except for the rotational movement. We could also place
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
each pair of drums in a tilting frame making it possible to put the drum, on which the winding takes place, always in the lower position, while the unwinding will always take place in the upper position or vice versa.
Summary.
In summary, the invention relates to:
1. A process for the manufacture of cords of fibrous material impregnated with a solid but fusible combustible material, this process being characterized by the following points considered separately or in combination: a) after having passed through a bath containing the material of melted impregnation and having been pulled through a number of dies, the bead is wound on one of the two rotating drums carried in a stationary device, and when full, the drum is disengaged from its motor shaft, the winding being continued on the other of said drums and the cord being unwound from the first of said drums to go through a second pulling process or other treatment process;
b) several sant cords drawn through the impregnation bath and the dies, and each wound on one of a row of drums each belonging to a pair of drums, the cord wound on the other drum of each pair in a previous spinning process being unwound to pass through a subsequent spinning process, through which the cord is pulled by a subsequent series of winding drums each belonging to a pair of drums; c) the cord is unwound from the drum at a greater speed than that with which it is wound up therein.
