<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     On a représenté un pignon 51a, connecté à l'arbre 16 qui entraine un pignon plus grand 50b, ce dernier étant en liaison avec le mécanisme d'enregistrement* Ce montage est particulièrement intéressant dans les cas où il* est nécessaire de disposer d'un couple appréciable pour entraîner le mécanisme d'enregistrement ou tout autre mécanisme connexe, en ce sens qu'il n'y a pas tendance au déplacement du disque 44 dans les entrefers 47, comme cela pourrait se produire avec le montage de la fig.4. On peut employer aussi un dispositif d'entraînement magnétique, particulièrement recommandable du point de vue de la précision du compteur, surtout quand on utilise pour les aimants de freinage des matériaux à grande force coercitive.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   L'expérience a montré   @

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

     On notera également que l'invention, qui a été décrite pour un compteur mono- phasé, peut être utilisée sur des appareils polyphasés qui impliquent l'utilisa- tion d'un ou plusieurs disques.

  IMPROVEMENTS TO MAGNETIC SUSPENSION DEVICES.
The present invention relates to devices with magnetic suspension of a mobile element and although it can be applied to many fields, a particular case of suspension of the rotor of a measuring device such as a meter will be described.
In devices of this type, it is above all important to reduce to as low a value as possible systematic errors such as those arising from the friction of the pivoting of the axis, which generates a resistive torque.

  In conventional counters, the weight of the mobile element is generally supported by a sapphire slider subject to breakage or wear causing the surfaces to lose the polish. This results in a modification of the operating characteristics due to the speed being too low at certain load speeds and particularly at low load. It can happen that a central station provides energy at a loss because a large part of the measuring devices operate for several hours a day at very low load.

   The subject of the invention is a suspension device in which the pressure on the friction surface of the swivels is reduced or even canceled by a magnetic force antagonistic to the weights of the moving assembly.

  One of the characteristics of the invention resides in a magnetic suspension device making it possible to support mobile elements, but nevertheless stable in the vertical direction and in which one uses, in the most efficient manner,

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>

the particular magnetic qualities of permanent magnets in material with high ooercitive force.

   The new suspension is remarkable in that it reconciles the reduction of mechanical friction with the robustness of the device and that the demagnetizing actions are practically ineffective.

   The invention is further characterized by the use of permanent magnets of a new method of construction, as well as of a device such that the rotation of the movable element is in no way hampered by the torques due to the hysteresis and eddy currents. In addition, the noise created by the continuously rotating device is greatly reduced.

   In what follows, an application of the invention to a meter will be indicated in which use is made of two cylindrical magnets of high coeroitive force, longitudinally polarized and arranged symmetrically with respect to an axis. One of the magnets is concentric with the other, their axes being aligned with that of the mobile element; said magnets exert their magnetic action of attraction at each end and thus tend to attract their adjacent ends in the horizontal plane marl. One of the magnets is attached to the meter frame and the other to the rotor shaft. Thanks to this arrangement, the mobile magnet floats freely inside the fixed magnet and the entire weight of the rotor is suspended and perfectly freed from any retarding torque due to the vertical friction component of the load.

   A guide device is provided at the upper and lower ends of the shaft, so as to avoid any lateral displacement. The magnetic field of the magnets also creates a centering force which increases as the load increases.

   It will be better understood if one refers to the drawing given purely by way of nonlimiting example and in which FIGS. 1 and 2 represent overall views in elevation, respectively from the side and from the front with parts cut away from a meter. induction. Figure 3 is a view of the same device, in which the base is shown on a horizontal plane, so as to highlight the position taken by the rotor during the storage and transport of the device. FIG. 4 is a view on a larger scale showing the various elements. Figure 5 is a variant. FIG. 6 represents another embodiment of the invention, with in FIG. 7, a variant of the mode of suspension.

   The invention will be described as applicable to a meter, but it will be appreciated that it can be used for all other modes of suspension. The meter comprises a base 10, a frame 12 fixed to the previous one and a cover 14. Also seen in the figure, a vertical shaft 16, made of light metal for example aluminum, rotating in a vertical plane and provided with a certain number. guide pieces 18 and 20, at the upper and lower ends of said shaft, and provided so that the friction torque on the movable element 16 is minimum. The lower guide part 20 comprises an adjustable bearing 21 and a pivot 22 of small diameter fixed to the end of the shaft 16. The pivot 22 passes through this annular part and the part 21 is housed at 23 at the end of the support. 24.

   The latter is mounted inside a sleeve 25 externally threaded at 26 to be fixed in a hole in the bracket 28 provided at the lower part of the frame. The position of the sleeve 25 can be adjusted inside the console 28, so as to properly place the bearing 21, the immobilization after adjustment being ensured by a screw 30. The bearing 21 may be of any suitable material, such as 'a fabric impregnated with synthetic resin and known as textolite.

   The upper bearing 18 is constituted by an element 31 similar to the bearing 21 and a relatively long and flexible pivot 32 of small diameter, fixed * to a support part 34. The bearing 31 which receives the pivot 32 is housed, at 35, at the upper end of the axis. The housings 23 and 35 can, if desired, be filled with a suitable lubricant. The support piece 34 comprises a housing 36 allowing the use of a long shaft in order to obtain suitable flexibility, for reasons which will be explained below. The support piece 34 is housed in an opening 37 provided in a bracket 38 fixed to the upper end of the frame 12, a screw 39 allows the adjustment of the position of the support piece 34 relative to the console 38.

   If the pivots 22 and 32 are provided with a very small diameter, the friction forces on the bearing only act on a small radius.

   To the axis 16 is fixed a disk 44 of conductive material, rotating in the alternating field to drive the axis 16 according to the quantity to be measured *. It is well known that the meters in which only a single drive element is used, for example, comprising two electromagnets, one with low resistance carrying the current, the other with high resistance excites by the current. voltage of the network on which we want to measure the power. The operation of these devices is sufficiently well known to technicians so that it is not necessary to recall it here.

   The counter shown by way of example comprises two magnetic braking magnets 4646, each having an air gap 47 through which the disc 44 passes;, They are adjusted so that the speed of the disc is proportional to the power to be measured by the device. , A recording mechanism 48, actuated by a toothed street 50 which meshes with a worm 51 linked to the shaft, totals the energy consumed,
The reaction between eddy currents which traverse the disc 44 and the unidirectional flow of the braking magnets tends to produce vibrations of the disc and of the shaft.

   The magnetic suspension of the moving assembly, that is to say the shaft 16 and the disc 44- is provided by a group 52 of two permanent magnets 54 and 56. As can be seen, these magnets have the shape of hollow cylinders concentric with the vertical axis, In the example shown, the cylindrical hollow magnet 56 is fixed on the upper end of the axis 16 and placed concentrically with respect to the magnet 54, It will be noted that, if the Magnet arrangement shown has been preferred owing to the simplicity and facilities conferred by the use of a rotating magnet of small diameter, one can imagine others. One can for example, reverse the relative positions of the fixed and fixed magnets. mobile without modifying in any way the spirit of the invention. Similarly, any method of fixing the magnet 56 to the moving part can be used.

   In the form 'represented of the invention, the hollow magnet 54 is fitted into a ferrule 58 of conductive material (copper or brass) and internally threaded at 60 to ensure its attachment to the support part 34. By loosening the screw 39, we can release the part 34 and adjust the position of the fixed magnet 54 relative to the console 38, the lower console 26, as well as the braking magnet 46, to properly center the disc 44 in the gaps of said magnets braking, The positioning of the disc 44 is made easier, by providing up threading on the part 34, as well as in the hole 37 made in the console 38.

   The magnet 54 and the support part 58 can be bevelled as seen at 53, to improve the presentation. As has been shown, the magnets 54 and 56 are magnetized along the axis of the cylinders which constitute them, their poles of opposite names facing each other, so that the two magnets form a closed magnetic circuit. We also see that the effective area of the upper pole of the magnet 56 is located above the neutral line of the fixed magnet; as a result, the adjacent ends of the magnets attract each other, while the upper end of the movable magnet and the lower end of the fixed magnet repel each other.

   As the poles of the outer magnet and the respective poles of the moving magnet are spaced apart from each other radially with respect to the axis of rotation, the fixed magnet is continuously out of the path of the vertical axial movement of the magnet. mobile.

   FIG. 5 a variant 52a of the suspension which comprises a screen 63 made of a magnetic material of high permeability, of soft iron for example, and which surrounds the magnets 54 and 56. The magnet 54 is carried by a non-metallic part 58a, in material plastic for example, and cup-shaped.

  The surface of each magnet is coated with a layer of conductive material, such as a copper deposit. If desired, the part 58a can be made of a conductive material. One or the other of the special arrangements in FIG. 5 can of course be incorporated into the assembly of FIG. 4.

     There is shown a pinion 51a, connected to the shaft 16 which drives a larger pinion 50b, the latter being in connection with the recording mechanism * This assembly is particularly interesting in cases where it * is necessary to have an appreciable torque to drive the recording mechanism or any other related mechanism, in the sense that there is no tendency for the disc 44 to move in the air gaps 47, as could happen with the assembly of FIG. 4. It is also possible to use a magnetic drive device, which is particularly advisable from the point of view of the accuracy of the meter, especially when materials with a high coercive force are used for the braking magnets.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Due to the limited available space available, the economy achieved by the use of a normal meter box, the conditions particularly inherent in the operation of meters and, finally, other factors including the importance will appear later, it is important to use permanent magnets 54 and 56 with high coercive force and relatively insensitive to temperature variations. Thus the Applicant Company uses for this purpose, a magnetic material whose coercive force is d 'at least 800 oers -teds and the remanent induction of at least 1000 gauss, which has enabled it to produce a magnetic suspension having the required properties and which can be produced in such dimensions that the normal elements of counters.

   It will be noted, on the other hand, that from the point of view of operation, it is possible to achieve an excellent suspension by employing magnets whose magnetic properties extend over a relatively wide range of values, and lower than those indicated above. above, but then the length of the magnets of the suspension system becomes important compared to the length of the mobile system.

   The optimum conditions, as regards the load-bearing force, are achieved when the lengths of the two magnets 54 and 56 are substantially the same. If one of the magnets is longer than the other, a given increase in weight corresponds to a greater displacement, it follows that the adjustment is more critical with regard to the position of the disc in the air gaps of the braking magnets. .

   For a long time, we have periodically tried to use the principle of magnetic attraction by producing a magnetic suspension device using permanent magnets to partially or totally support the rotor of a meter for example, but for the most diverse reasons. , we had suffered setbacks, so that we had not until now found other means of support than the usual bearings. This is probably explained, in large part, by the fact that in previous magnetic suspension systems the movable element was particularly unstable either in the horizontal plane or in the vertical plane. Such a system using the principle of magnetic attraction appeared at the beginning of this century.

   It was perfectly stable in the vertical plane, but of an extreme lateral instability because the central pole pieces of soft iron provided on the movable element, as they approached the supporting magnets, were subjected to the action of the pole at the narrowest point of the air gap, which increased side friction and caused rapid wear. These drawbacks were, moreover, cumulative, in the sense that these lateral forces increased with wear.

  This frequently resulted in permanent displacement of the rotor, along with an increase in frictional forces. Other conditions inherent in the operation of meters and which will be alluded to later have also militated against the use of such suspension systems.

   During operation, the elements are assembled as described above and the fixed magnet is adjusted vertically to cause the moving magnet to move up or down and thus properly place the disc in the air gaps. the spinning magnets, When this disc rotates, the system comprising the suspension magnets, as well as the disc and the shaft it supports, can float freely, since the rotating system is entirely free from any influence of gravity with regard to vertical components. The concentric mounting of the magnets ensures the requirement of an air gap between the respective cooperating poles under all vertical load conditions. The system is therefore balanced with regard to gravity.

  If the mobile magnet had no weight to bear, it would occupy a neutral position for which its ends would be practically in the same horizontal plane as the respective ends of the fixed magnet or a position symmetrical with respect to said fixed magnet. Such a position cannot, moreover, be reached under practical conditions because of the weight of the magnet and the low friction which exists on the guide bearings.

   Owing to its weight, the mobile magnet tends to move vertically downwards, until the variation in flux is maximum, for a given increase in the load, which is explained by the fact that although the respective north and south poles of the two magnets move away from each other when the weight increases, the system nevertheless remains stable over the whole possible range of load-bearing force, because when the moving magnet moves down , its upper pole comes closer and closer to the lower pole of the fixed magnet and that results in an increase in the repulsive force, the vertical component of which tends to push the mobile magnet upwards.

   Experience has shown @

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>

that taking into account the weight of the moving magnet, there is a linear relationship, over a wide range, between the suspension force and the vertical slip of the magnet, which relationship applies to the weight values that one meets in the usual counters. Therefore, although the moving crew may move downward, under the action of an abnormal disturbing force, it returns by itself to its initial position, although there are no stops, when this force has ceased to act.

   Moreover, in extreme cases, the vertical movement of the moving assembly is limited by the travel of the disc 44 between the faces of the air gaps 47 of the braking magnets. It can be seen in Fig. 3 that this feature can be used advantageously when the devices are packed for transport. Indeed, when the suspension magnets do not have to support the rotating system and when the device is in position horizontal, the force of attraction is sufficient to keep the disc 44 against the upper pole faces, or to the left, as indicated at 66. This therefore avoids any dangerous vibration of the moving assembly during transport without it being necessary to provide a spring to hold the disc as is often done for the transport of the usual type of meters.

   It will be noted that the repulsion force of the poles of the same name has a horizontal component and as these poles come in the immediate vicinity of each other, when the mobile magnet moves downwards with respect to the fixed magnet, this component tends to increase with weight, thus producing radial forces which help to center the moving magnet. The use of these central forces constitutes an essential progress brought about by the invention; Lateral stability is ensured, with this result that a very small displacement of the element suspended by ranport to the alignment bearing is not accompanied by a significant lateral pressure on said bearing.

   If we take into account this effect which reduces the lateral thrust, we see that it is preferable to let the mobile magnet float in a position such that its upper pole is in the vicinity of the neutral zone of the fixed magnet. .

   The arrangement of the magnets, one relative to the other, such that they form a closed magnetic circuit, is of great interest from the point of view of the efficiency of the suspension. This is because the magnetomotor forces are added, so that the two ends of the magnets cooperate to produce the force which lifts the moving assembly. The reluctance of the magnetic circuit is drastically reduced, as well as the leakage flux, so that the magnetic energy available from the two magnets is used to the best advantage. The use of much shorter magnets allows a saving of material as well as an appreciable reduction of the size and makes possible the use of the frames of existing devices which can thus receive the new suspension.

   In a variant of the invention shown in Fig.6, 150 shows a group of two permanent magnets 152 and 154, symmetrical with respect to the axis and intended to magnetically suspend the axis 116. It can be seen that the magnets, in this case again, are cylindrical and are drilled in 156 and 158, along their major axis. Magnet 154 may be attached to axis 116, as is moving magnet 134.

  The fixed lower magnet 152 is attached in any suitable manner to the sleeve 124.

  These magnets are arranged so that the pole of one is opposite the pole of the same name on the other. The magnetization is longitudinal and they are mounted along the same vertical axis. The position of the support piece 124 can be adjusted by means of a screw 128, passing through the support 126 and held in position by the screw 130 so as to properly place the magnet 152 relative to the console 126.

   To the axis 116, a conductive disc 160 is fixed, which moves in an alternating field, at an angle which corresponds to the quantity of energy to be measured.

  It is conceivable that meters which have only one drive element, for example, are provided with two electromagnets supplied with alternating current, one with a coarse wire, the other with a fine wire. Each of them induces eddy currents in the disc.

   There is shown in Fig.7, a variant of the centering device of Fig.6.

  In this variant, the mobile magnet 134 is placed so that its upper pole is adjacent to the lower pole of the same name of the fixed magnet 132, that is to say that the upper pole of the mobile magnet is found placed below the netrea area of the fixed magnet. As will be explained later, in this provision

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>

-tion, the centering device 120 'contributes to supporting the disc and the axis, while the device of Fig.6 opposes the action of the suspension magnets.

   It will also be noted that other devices of magnetic suspension elements can be used instead of those mentioned above in which the suspension magnets are arranged so as to create a repulsive force. Thus, said magnets can be replaced by two concentric magnets in which the predominant force is attractive.

   The invention, not limited to the case where the central magnetic device is placed above the disc, also comprises a device in which the central system and the suspension system are placed either above or below the disc. In addition, the magnetic guide device, the suspension device, also magnetic, and the bearing can be reversed, in that the suspension device and the bearing are placed at the top of the axis, the magnetic centering device being below the hanger. In this variant, as well as in the one in which the magnetic devices are placed above the disc, the central opening provided in the fixed suspension magnet would be large enough to allow the axis to which the magnet is attached to suspension to cross it freely.

   During operation, the elements remain assembled as has just been said, and the fixed magnets 132 and 152 can undergo a vertical translation thanks to the adjustment mechanism, so as to maintain the disc 160 in the air gaps of the brake magnets. When the disc rotates under the action of the drive elements, the rotary system comprising the two magnets 134 and 154, the axis 116 and the disc 160 "floats" following the magnetization of the system since the rotating elements are entirely freed from all friction generated by the vertical components.

   Folding, the guide device and the single bearing keep the rotating element 116 perfectly centered with the minimum of friction. In the device of Fig. 6, there is a vertical component of the attractive force between the lower poles and the upper poles of the two magnets, which urges the axis 116 downwards, in opposition to the magnetic repulsion which s exerted between the magnets 152 and 154. Therefore, the latter must have sufficient force to absorb the dead weight of the system in addition to the vertical force exerted by the central magnetic device.

   In the device of Fig. 7, the operation is similar to that of Fig. 6, but the respective poles of the movable aienant 134, which cooperate with those of opposite polarity of the fixed axis 132, are placed in such so that there is a vertical force directed upward. The magnetic centering device thus contributes to the action of the suspension magnets on the weight of the moving magnet, from which it follows that it is possible to use suspension magnets smaller than those used in FIG. 6. In any of these devices, although the rotating system may be moved up or down under the action of some disturbance, it regains by itself the level at which it floats and remains suspended without l intervention of no support, when the disturbance disappears.

   This is because the repulsive force increases as the rotating magnet approaches the fixed magnet.

   As with the centering device, lateral stability is obtained for maximum imbalance in the vertical direction. Any force tending to decentra " the rotating member 134 is accompanied by a force of magnetic repulsion in the radial direction between the poles of the moving and fixed magnets of the magnetic guide device, so that when the force is removed, the The rotating magnet centers itself.

   The symmetrical mounting of the magnets constitutes a considerable advantage in terms of reducing the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents.

  With magnets formed by a homogeneous and uniformly magnetized material, no variation in magnetic potential is observed between the fixed and mobile magnets, hence the elimination of said effects. However, when they exist, they interfere with starting and generate a resistive torque during operation.

  With the centering device of FIGS, 6 and 7 making it possible to obtain lateral stability, it is however noted that vertical stability is difficult to obtain, that is to say that the magnetic centering device cannot constitute, at the same time, a suspension system. However, in the case of mounting the

<Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   Fig. 7 where the vertical force is oriented in a direction such as to compensate for part of the weight of the moving equipment, a pivot or ball system can usefully be used as a guide and support for the axis, or a magnetic suspension system and a guide bearing, such as that of Fig.6.

   When the centering device conforms to that shown in Fig. 6, the action of the movable element is however increased, so that in such a case it is advisable to use a magnetic suspension system at the same time as the centering device. @ @
When the magnetic centering device is used at the same time as the usual pivot serving both for support and for guiding and when it is provided for there to be a vertical imbalance of the centering system in a direction such that it supports a part of the weight of the mobile system, this results in an obvious advantage over the guide system comprising an upper bearing, due to the fact that the friction due to the existence of the latter is eliminated and, by freeing the pivot from part of the bearing. load, wear of the latter is reduced,

   with this result that it is possible to provide it with smaller dimensions, which leads to a reduction in the frictional forces. When employing a centering device with magnetic suspension, the friction is reduced at the same time, and also the cost price.

   To avoid the demagnetization of the magnets in very compact devices where they are placed very close to the coils and can be subjected to very intense fields produced by disturbances on the network, a screen 174 (Fig. 6 and 7) has been provided in a material with very high magnetic permeability such as soft iron. This screen envelops the magnets 132 and 134. The surface of the magnets is covered with a screen 176 of non-magnetic material, but conductive, such as a deposit of copper. The support 36 can also be of a conductive material.

   In all the embodiments of the invention, the magnetomotor forces of the respective magnets are cooperating, it follows that the apparatus can be made relatively insensitive to any slight lateral displacement or eccentricity of the mobile magnet of small diameter, indeed , such a device makes it possible to provide a relatively large annular air gap, so that the mobile magnet can move laterally in an appreciable way, or present a certain eccentricity without the force which tends to offset it undergoing an appreciable change. In other words, the mobile equipment is much more resistant to the lateral pressures exerted on it.

   The arrangement of the magnets in axial symmetry, such that the moving magnet rotates around its polar axis, is also an important feature with regard to the reduction, to a minimum, of hysteresis and eddy currents. By using magnets - homogeneous and uniformly magnetized, the radial flux between the fixed magnet and the moving magnet '-' hardly undergoes variations, so that the disturbing phenomena due to bysteresis and eddy currents are deleted. These phenomena interfere with starting and introduce a reterdating torque which affects the moving equipment in operation at the same time as they reduce the efficiency of the element in suspension.

   Other causes tend moreover to disturb the operation of the magnets intended to suspend the rotary element. It is well known, in fact, that magnets have a tendency to lose their magnetization over time and also due to various disturbances of a magnetic order, as well as under the action of temperature variations.

   Measuring devices commonly installed on power supply networks are subject to two types of magnetic disturbances.The first consists of establishing a short-circuit between the terminals of the load circuit of the meter, that is say on the subscriber's side, which can cause the appearance of a transient current, equal to a few hundred times if not a thousand times, the operating current of the measuring device and this before the fuses or the circuit breaker have could work. The second cause resides in the production of a transient overvoltage or overcurrent of very short duration, due to the action of lightning.

   These disturbances can be such that the device burns or its insulation breaks, but in most cases they dissipate on their own and only a strong transient current appears in the voltmeter coil. In the case where disturbances act either alone or in combination, we observe the appearance of intense magnetic fields in the coils and their magnetic circuits which may be completely saturated, hence the appearance of significant leakage flows which may have several hundreds, or several thousand times the normal value

so-called leakage flows, to which the magnets of the suspension are normally subjected. As these disturbing fields are generated in alternating currents, they therefore have a demagnetizing action.

   However, in equipment according to the invention and because of the properties of the materials which constitute the permanent magnets 54-56 and also because they are subjected to an alternating current of aging before their introduction into the apparatus, they perfectly retain their magnetic properties and the counters produced according to the invention have characteristics which are perfectly stable over time. This aging current, applied to the magnets and which subjects them to the action of a certain number of demagnetizing ampere-turns, gives them the property of strongly resisting disturbing actions, so that the advantages of the suspension mode described above remain, even in the case of the appearance of intense fields in the vicinity of the suspension magnets.

   The demagnetizing ampere-turns of aging, per unit length, is a measure of the degree of immunity of a magnet subjected to. the demagnetizing aotion of the above-mentioned disturbances. However, it was previously recommended the use of screens to protect the magnets against demagnetizing actions, but these devices only provide partial protection, due to the impossibility of ensuring, by their use, effective protection against magnetomotive force.

   The possibility of applying the prior aging method under conditions compatible with the high coercive force of the materials used, has shown that it is not at all necessary to use a screen in the device of Fig. 4. In certain cases, however, and more particularly when extreme compactness is required, that is to say in the case where it is necessary to place the suspension magnets in the immediate vicinity of the coils of the measuring device, it may be necessary to make use of the aforementioned screen, as shown in Fig.5 and 6. Such a magnetic screen provides some protection against uniform external fields, including low frequency fields.

   A copper screen also provides some protection against transient very high frequency parasitic fields or those created by waves with a steep front and generally generated by the operation of high power circuit breakers or by lightning.

   The meters according to the invention, such as those of Fig.4, have been tested in acoustic test chambers and their operation has been compared with that of bearing and pilot devices. For loads corresponding to 200-400% of the normal load, the ball and pivot bearings are generally noisy due to the vibrations of the guide part at the lower part of the pivot, vibrations transmitted by the resonance of the disc. On the other hand, the meters comprising the magnetic suspension according to the invention are silent for an overload of the order of 600%.

   In addition, during the operation of the pivot devices, it is found that with high loads, the ball tends to move on the wall of the lower bearing during the corresponding displacement of the disc in the air gap of the braking magnets. As a result of the high field or the uneven distribution of the flux in the air gap of magnets with high coercive force, as is generally the case, this deviation in the equilibrium position of the disc greatly compromises the calibration. During the tests of an apparatus such as that of Fig. 4. it was possible to pass a current of sufficient intensity to destroy the coils without noticing the slightest displacement of the disc in the air gap.

   The usual meters can be subjected to temperature differences between -60 and +100 C. Experience has shown that the disc retains practically the same position in the air gaps of the braking magnets, for temperature variations of this order.

   The magnetic suspension process according to the invention therefore allows the devices which include it to withstand all the external actions to which the meters may be subjected. This process can moreover be applied to all measuring devices provided with rotating elements and their precision can be increased by the elimination of friction. On the other hand, savings are made in maintenance costs. In the examples shown, the magnets of the suspension are placed on the side of the upper face of the disc in order to distance them as far as possible from the coils and also for reasons of better use of space.

   However, it is possible to place them in any other place along the axis without modifying in any way the spirit of the invention.

     It will also be appreciated that the invention, which has been described for a single-phase meter, can be used on polyphase devices which involve the use of one or more disks.

   In all of the foregoing, an application of the invention has been described in which the magnets used were cylindrical and hollow, but it is understood that it is also possible to use magnets with a polygonal section.

   Although several embodiments of the invention have been described and shown, it is obvious that one does not wish to limit oneself to these particular forms given simply by way of example and without any restrictive character and that by Consequently, all the variants having the same principle and the same object as the provisions indicated above would come within the scope of the invention as they do.

ABSTRACT Magnetic suspension for measuring devices, such as single-phase ov polyphase meters, intended to eliminate swiveling friction and vibrations, in particular characterized by the following points taken separately or in combination t Use of two concentric magnets, one fixed, the other mobile, arranged so that their poles-of opposite names are adjacent and that their axes coincide and are located in a vertical plane. The magnets are spaced apart by a radial air gap which allows free movement of the moving magnet. The force of suspension is produced both by the attraction of the opposite names to the corresponding ends of the magnets, and by the repulsion exerted by the upper pole of one of the magnets on the lower pole of the other, when the one of the magnets moves longitudinally relative to the other. Preferred embodiments, but not limiting, in which the fixed magnet has the shape of a hollow cylinder, inside which moves the mobile magnet, also cylindrical and fitted on the axis of the rater.
