 naphtalène-sulfoniques alcoyiés, l'acide benzène-1,3-disulfoni- .que, l'acide naphtalène-l.5-disulfonique, l'acide diméthylaniline-para-sulfonique, l'acide 2.5-diohloraniline-4-sulfouique, l'acide para-stêaryle-amino-.banzène-sùlfonique, l'acide . para-ootaàéayle-hyàroxy-beNzéne-sulfonique, l'acide thiophène- 3-sulfonique, etc....

Si l'on condense

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI3.2

 EMI3.5

"Sulfamido-alkyl nitriles and process for the preparation of these products".

The Applicant has found that sulfonylalkyl nitriles and sulfamidoalkylcarboxylic acids are obtained by condensing organic sulfonamides with aliphatic aldehyde oyanhydrins or with their constituents and, where appropriate, by saponifying the nitriles formed to get
 EMI1.1
sultamido-alkyl-carboxylic acids. The same sulfonylalkyl nitriles are obtained if N-alkylenic compounds of organic sulfonamides are condensed with hydrocyanic acid or its salts.

As starting materials which lend themselves to the implementation of the present process, there will be mentioned amides of aliphatic, araliphatic or cyclic sulphonic acids of any kind.

The amides of the following sulfonic acids can be used, for example: propane-sulfonic acid, propane-

1.3-disulfonic acid, octyl-sulfonic acid, dodecyl-sulfonic acid, oetyl-sulfonic acid, tetrahydronaphthalene-sulfonic acid, benzyl-sulfonic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, oyclohexanesulfonic acid, para-toluene-sulfonic acid, naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid, acids
 EMI1.3
alkylated naphthalenesulphonic acid, benzene-1,3-disulphonic acid, naphthalene-l.5-disulphonic acid, dimethylaniline-para-sulphonic acid, 2.5-diohloraniline-4-sulphonic acid, para-stearyl-amino-.banzene-sulphonic acid, acid. para-ootaàéayle-hyàroxy-beNzene-sulfonic acid, thiophene-3-sulfonic acid, etc ....

In addition one can use the mixture of amides of alkyl-benzenesulfonic acids, which are prepared by the action of alkyl chlorides (obtained from, from, hydrocarbons from the synthesis of Fischer and Tropsoh and boiling between 220 and 3200) on benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride and by subsequent sulfonation. In addition, the reaction products of ammonia and compounds which are formed by the action of halogen and sulfur dioxide on saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons or on halogenated hydrocarbons are taken into account.

ference, formaldehyde or 1fac6thaldehyde. It is also possible to use the polymeric products of aldehydes or of compounds which, under the reaction conditions, readily liberate aldehyde, for example acetals. Starting from cyanohydrins, it is advantageous to use the nitrile of glycolic acid and the nitrile of lactic acid. If we condense

N-alkyleniac compounds of sulfonamides with hydrocyanic acid or with its salts, it is in particular the reaction products of formaldehyde with sulfonamides which are suitable in this regard.

In the present process, the reaction can be carried out directly or in the presence of any solvents or diluents. The addition of condensing agents such as caustic alkalis, alkali cyanides or organic bases, for example piperidine, in minimal amounts is often advantageous. The reactions take a clear course and the temperature ranges from 0 to 150; in most cases, a temperature lower than 100 is chosen. The reaction of the sulfonamides with the cyanohydrins is preferably carried out in the molten state at a temperature of between 80 and 150. During the reaction of sulfonamides with hydrocyanic acid and aldehydes, it is possible to operate under pressure in a closed vessel or in the presence of solvents, such as water, aliphatic alcohols and hydrocarbons.

The procedure with the salts of the cyanohydrins of the aldehydes is particularly advantageous since it can be carried out in an aqueous medium at a temperature below 100, in open containers, the solvents or diluents, used if necessary, can be removed by distillation, washing or filtration.

Depending on the nature of the raw materials, the sulfamidonitriles obtained by the process which is the subject of the present invention partly constitute oily liquids and partly crystalline bodies of acidic character. It is advantageous to purify the water-insoluble sulfonitriles by redissolving them in a solution of sodium carbonate and reprecipitating them with acid. The products obtained are suitable in particular as intermediate compounds for the preparation of adjuvants in the textile industry and of dyes, since they can be saponified by means of acids or alkalis to obtain the sulfamido-alkyl-carboxylic acids. correspondents.

EXAMPLE 1 32 parts by weight of sulfamidobenzene are dissolved in 100 parts by weight of 8% caustic soda solution and 12 parts by weight of glycolic acid nitrile are added to the solution. The mixture is stirred for 90 hours.

The sodium salt of benzene-sulfamido-methylenitrile is then formed. After cooling, the solution is acidified and during this operation the nitrile first separates in oily form. After decantation, it is washed with cold water and then solidified to form light yellow crystals melting at a temperature of 77. By boiling the nitrile with a solution of caustic soda or by heating it with strong hydrochloric acid, the benzene-sulfamido-acetic acid is obtained, melting at 165.

EXAMPLE 2 64 parts by weight of sulfamido-benzene and 24 parts by weight of 105-strength glycolic acid nitrile are melted and 2 parts by weight of powdered caustic soda are added to the melt as a condensing agent. The mixture heats up to 110 with formation of benzene-sulfamidomethyl-nitrile. The mixture is stirred for a further hour at 110, the melt is diluted with 200 parts by weight of water and basified with 40 parts by weight of sodium carbonate. The resulting solution of the sodium salt of the nitrile is cooled and clarified. The filtrate is precipitated benzenesulfamido-methyl-nitrile by addition of hydrochloric acid.

EXAMPLE 3 79 parts by weight of sulfonylurea-benzene and 500 parts of water are mixed with stirring and 39 parts by weight of sodium cyanide and 45 parts by weight of 40% formaldehyde are added to the mixture. The mixture is continued to stir for 2 hours at 70 and, during this operation, it is

EXAMPLE 6 From 32 parts by weight of sulfamidobenzene and 15 parts by weight of 40% formaldehyde, the methylol compound is first prepared by the process described in German Patent No. 403 718 dated May 18, 1922 in the name by Chemische Fabrik von Heyden AG This compound is stirred with a solution of 14 parts by weight of potassium cyanide in 500 parts of water for two hours at 90 ° C and a-

EXAMPLE 9: As starting material, a mixture of aliphatic sulfonic acid chlorides (containing 12.5% hydrolyzable chlorine and 13.8% total chlorine) which was prepared from 'a mixture of straight chain aliphatic hydrocarbons with a range of boiling points from 200 to 350, by the simultaneous action of sulfur dioxide and chlorine in the presence of ultra-light. violet. From this mixture, the sulfonamide is obtained by the action of ammonia. 62 parts by weight of this compound are heated at 40 for several hours with a solution of 16 parts by weight of potassium cyanide and 18 parts by weight of formaldehyde in 200 parts of water, until a sample taken from this mixture remains clear even on cooling.
