 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 rieur.

    PROTECTIVE CASTLE FOR ELBOW TUBES
The invention relates to a protective cap or cap for the elbows of tubes, and in particular the superheating elements, or other heat exchangers, which are exposed to the action of the flue gases.

   Different forms of these protective caps are known as well as different means for fixing them to the tubes.

   In particular, in the case of superheater elements heated by flue gas, they must meet several conditions: on the one hand, it is necessary that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 can obtain a sufficiently high superheating of the steam, on the other hand it is necessary to avoid or reduce the excessive heating of the elbow which is exposed to the danger of burning under the effect of the flame sting. If the protective cap is manufactured, as is customary in the form of a metal body of particularly notable thickness and closely surrounding the entire bend and the ends of the tubes which terminate therein, it follows that the transmission of heat to the steam is greatly reduced.

   And, moreover, when the hats are made of high temperature resistant metal, the price of such hats increases in proportion to their thickness.

   In order to reduce the losses in effective heating surface, losses which result from the provision of a protective cap on the elbow, it has already been proposed to provide these caps with suitable slots. If the caps are fixed to the elbows, for example by welding, soldering, their renewal presents difficulties when they are damaged or burnt. In some circumstances, the entire elbow must be changed. But if, on the other hand, the caps are mounted in a removable manner, for example by means of tabs integral with said caps and engaging in the interval between the two tubes, we run the risk of seeing corrosions taking place. produce on cap-elbow contact surfaces.

   The drawbacks which have just been described are remedied by means of the protective cap according to the invention, which consists of a flat cap, of heat-resistant material, having the general shape of a shell or mushroom, and which is maintained to a certain

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 tain distance from the elbow to which it is fixed, ¯¯ by t for example by welding * In this way, a loss of effective heating surface is avoided. In addition, the cap can be shaped so that there is no reduction or an insignificant reduction in the section offered to the passage of the flue gases. Finally, the free gap between the cap and the elbow exerts a favorable influence by constituting a heat insulator.

   It should be noted that a deposit of ash or cinders $ etc ... cannot occur on the protective cap or on the elbow, because the cinders can fall freely, by the interval left between the cap and elbow, in the smoke tube.

   In one embodiment of the invention, the protective cap is provided laterally with tabs by means of which this cap is fixed, for example by welding, to the flat sides of the elbow. In another embodiment, in particular in the case where the cap has the shape of a mushroom, its attachment to the elbow takes place by means of a median rod on which one or the other organ can be welded.

   In the method of attachment shown, there are only relatively small contact surfaces between the cap and the elbow, so the heat transfer from the cap to the elbow is low. Consequently, the duration of the hat, like that of the elbow, is thereby increased, and, moreover, the replacement of a damaged or burnt hat is relatively easy.

   The following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings given by way of example, relates to some

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 embodiments of the invention.

   Figures 1 and 2 show in two perpendicular sections a first embodiment of the invention.

   Figures 3 & 4 relate to a variant.

   Figures 5 & 6 relate to another variant.

   FIG. 7 shows, in axial section, another embodiment mounted on a superheater arranged in a smoke tube.

   In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, two branches of tubes 1-2 are joined in a bend 3 obtained by bending. The outer wall, elongated during the bending process and therefore thinner, is protected by a cap 4, made of heat-resistant material, against the dart effect of the flames reaching the smoke tubes.

   The cap has the shape of a flat shell, provided with two tabs 5, fixed for example by welding on the flat sides of the elbow 3 which is U-shaped, the fixing being such that between the shell and the elbow, there remains a certain gap and that, consequently, between the internal face of the shell 4 and the external face of the elbow 3 there is a space constituting a heat insulator. The contact surfaces between the protective shell and the elbow are small and the method of attachment is relatively simple.

   In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 & 4, the shell 4 does not have, as in the first embodiment, a uniform thickness, but its wall is thicker on the side facing out-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 laughing. In addition, the fixing of the shell 4 does not take place by means of tabs 5, but by welding the edge of the shell 4 to points 6 located on the flat sides of the elbow 3.

   Figures 5 and 6 show an application of the invention in the case of an elbow manufactured by the known forging process (pressure forging). The fixing of the cap 4, in the form of a shell, takes place, as in the second embodiment, by welding the edges of the shell 4 to the points 6 of the flat sides of the elbow 3.

   In the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, the heat exchanger element consisting of the two tubes 1 and 2 joined by the elbow 3, is arranged in a smoke tube 7. The protective cap is mushroom-shaped 8, which is connected by a rod 9, for example welded, with the elbow 3 in a manner analogous to that which is used for the other embodiments, so that an interval remains between the cap and the elbow to constitute a space insulating for heat.

   As seen in the drawings, the elbow is largely protected by the protective cap, without a large elbow area or tubes being removed for heat exchange. Likewise, the conformation and the arrangement of the cap are such that it offers a reduced section and does not significantly reduce the passage of gases in the smoke tube.
