Description
<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
solution à faire réagir à -40 jusqu'à -80 . Dans le cas du 2.5diméthylhexadiène-(1.5) il est recommandable de ne pas exécuter
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
EXEMPLE
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

Process for the polymerization of diolefins.
We know that it is possible to polymerize olefins,
particularly isobutene (or isobutylene), temperatures
<EMI ID = 1.1>
Friedel-Crafts catalysts, such as aluminum chloride
or boron fluoride, or their complex combinations, in
high molecular weight compounds. It is possible to polymerize in the same way also mixtures of isolefins and
diolefins containing conjugated or unconjugated double bonds
conjugates. Depending on the reaction conditions and the content of
these mixtures of diolefins are thus obtained different polymerization products which have in part a character resembling that of lubricating oils and in part a
resembling that of rubber.
However, it has been found according to the present invention that
is possible to polymerize non-double bonded diolefins
also conjugated alone with the aid of FriedelCrafts catalysts, preferably boron fluoride, at temperatures
<EMI ID = 2.1>
thus valuable resinous polymerization products.
Suitable starting substances are primarily
low molecular weight diolefins, containing doubles
unconjugated bonds, particularly 2.5-dimethylhexadiene-
(1.5), having for formula
<EMI ID = 3.1>
which can be prepared for example by making a metal act,
preferably magnesium, on methallyl chloride in
ethereal solution, or by causing nickel carbonyl to act on
methallyl chloride in methanolic solution.
Polymerization is carried out in a similar manner
to that applied in the case of isoolefins. A low boiling point diluent, for example
propane, butane or methyl chloride and refrigerate the
solution to be reacted at -40 to -80. In the case of 2.5dimethylhexadiene- (1.5) it is advisable not to run
<EMI ID = 4.1>
since its solidification point is located at -75 [deg.] and it
would then precipitate as solid crystalline magma already before the mixture of diolefin and diluent, refrigerated to <EMI ID = 5.1> boron fluoride, gaseous or also dissolved, for example in methyl chloride. In the first case is usefully introduced a quantity of gaseous boron fluoride enclosed above carbon tetrachloride slowly into the mixture to be polymerized.
Polymerization begins immediately and proceeds with a strong release of heat. The temperature is kept as constant as possible by vigorous refrigeration. The polymerization product precipitates in solid form. The end of polymerization can be recognized by the decline in the release of heat. As soon as most of the diene has polymerized it is useful to stop the polymerization, for example by adding
<EMI ID = 6.1>
soluble in aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, retorts benzine (or petroleum gasoline), benzene or carbon tetrachloride; on the other hand, they are insoluble in alcohols, esters and lower ketones. The properties of the products obtained can be slightly modified by
<EMI ID = 7.1>
the temperature, the purity of the diene to be polymerized, etc. The resins prepared according to the present invention can be used especially in the varnish industry.
EXAMPLE
<EMI ID = 8.1>
-75 to -80 [deg.] Boron fluoride is slowly introduced, enclosed in a gas burette above carbon tetrachloride, so as to have added after about 5 to 10 minutes 2000 <EMI ID = 9.1 >
Cement of polymerization by increasing the temperature. During the addition of the boron fluoride, the refrigeration is vigorously carried out, possibly interrupting the addition of the boron fluoride for some time. The subsequent action of the catalyst present at the end of the polymerization is slowed down by an addition of methanol, while simultaneously distilling off the propane used as diluent.
<EMI ID = 10.1>
of polymerization precipitated, colorless, by steam stripping. 90.2 g of a clear resin are obtained, the softening point of which is located at 51 [deg.], This quantity corresponding to
