<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

"Device for pulling back beets and its applioation to a machine for removing and pulling beets."
The manual pulling of beets is a long and painful operation and the attempts made to pull the beets using devices similar to plows have so far given only insufficient results, the beets being. ,, moreover, frequently damaged ..
The object of the present invention is first of all a device which makes it possible to tear beets in a simple manner and without risk of deterioration. This device is mainly constituted by two substantially planar coulters, arranged on a common frame supported by a frame itself mounted on running elements, for example wheels and associated so as to form a dihedral angle, the edge of which faces towards the ground and inclined from rear to front towards the latter, is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the chassis, these two coulters leaving between them a free gap going narrowing from the front, where its width is greater. with the average diameter of a beet, up to the rear, where its width is less than said diameter.
When the coulters, the lower end of which penetrates into the ground, are moved following a beet radius, the latter engage one after the other in the gap between the coulters and are found , due to the inclination of the coulters, raised and torn from the earth, the beets pushing each other back towards the rear of the so-called coulters.
Behind the set of coulters are advantageously arranged, between two side walls and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the chassis, several beaters formed by trees on the periphery of which are fixed rows of protruding rods, for example metal, preferably curved. , the arrangement and length of which are such that there is inter- penetration of the rows of rods relating to a hedgehog in those relating to the neighboring hedgehog, these hedgehogs being rotatably mounted and mechanically connected to the wheels of the frame which carries the device , so as to be driven in the direction of rotation which moves the rods back and forth to their high position.
The pulled beets are thus transported to the rear while being shaken, which frees them of the soil which adheres to them.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In order to allow the device to be transported, for example on the road., Without risk of deterioration of the coulters or of the road, the frame on which are mounted, advantageously in an adjustable manner in height, the lifting coulters, is preferably mobile in a vertical plane relative to the support frame and subjected to the action of a dlspositif do relcvagc capable of being actuated by a hand lever or by the wheels of the frame, for example by means of a clutch in time of known type. For this purpose, the coulter-holder frame can be mounted to slide in vertical slides integral with the frame and be provided with racks cooperating with toothed sectors wedged on a pivoting shaft in said frame and integral with a connected lever, by a set of connecting rods, to the lifting control mechanism of the device.
On the other hand, a clutch mechanism is preferably interposed on the transmission connected to the wheels of the frame of the device.
The set of beaters arranged behind the pulling coulters can also be articulated, at least partially, its articulated part being integral with the coulter-holder frame in order to follow its lifting movement.
The present invention also relates to the combination of a stripper device such as that which has just been described with a beet stripper device and a mechanical rake allowing the clearing of the leaves cut by the stripper, these three devices being mounted one on one. behind the others on a common mobile frame and the leaf mucking rake being interposed between the bar turning machine, placed at the front, and the puller, placed at the rear.
The beet bar turning machine comprises, preferably, freely articulated around an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the common frame, a shoe or guide, for example a sheet metal plate, the lower edge of which is parallel to the axis of the joint. - culation, is likely to come to rest on the ground, a sharp disc, mounted at the end of a shaft supported in rotation in bearings integral with the aforementioned shoe and roll, 'to the rolling bodies of the chassis by a transmission mechanical which transmits the rotational movement of the wheels to the cutting disc, being placed immediately behind the shoe in a slightly inclined plane on the ground when the device rests on the latter and passing at a short distance under the lower edge of the shoe.
By moving the device on a beet comb, in the direction of its length, the shoe layers the beet excavations and rests by its lower edge on the top of the latter, the cutting disc coming immediately after cutting their neck.
To facilitate the transmission of the movement of the wheels to the cutting disc, the shaft which carries the latter can be made up of two parts forming an angle between them such that the upper part is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the frame of the device, these two parts being connected, for example, by a return of bevel gears. The movement transmission members can then comprise a shaft extending parallel to the axis of the chassis ot connected, on the one hand, for example by means of a pinion and a ring gear, to one of the shafts of the chassis wheels and, on the other hand, to the upper part of the shaft carrying the cutting disc, by means of an elastic connection, for example a Galle chain provided with a tensioning device.
This prevents any untimely acceleration or deceleration of the rotational movement of the cutting disc during the movements of the device.

turning machine compared to its support frame.
The assembly constituted by the shoe, the cutting disc and its drive shaft is advantageously capable of being raised and held in this position by a suspension mechanism subjected to the action of a lever capable of being controlled by hand or by a mechanism driven by the wheels of the chassis, via the aforementioned time clutch, which allows transport, for example on the road, de.la machine.

During the rotation of the braces, the bars are drawn in and pass successively to their extreme lower position while remaining horizontal, the tip of the teeth sweeping the ground and throwing the leaves therein to the side.

This connection can be constituted by a chain of Galle connecting to a first pinion, wedged on the shaft which carries the said spider, an autro-pinion wedged on the shaft '"parallel to the longitudinal axis of the chassis and already used for '16n-b-ra: nement of the bar turning device, with possible interposition (3'. one gear reduction hour.: '.
The suppoWs of the two braces Qu mounting members of the rake bars are advantageously articulated around two axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the frame, one of these supports being connected to a lifting member, for example a fixed chain at its other end on a circular sector wedged on the same shaft as the lifting sectors of the bar turning device. We can thus raise the rake to allow transport, for example on the road.
In order to further accelerate the work of turning and pulling beets, it is possible to place, side by side on the same frame, several turning devices such as

blackcurrant which carries the various devices can be placed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the chassis and immediately behind the last of the beaters which follows the puller.
This conveyor makes it possible to collect on one side, of the device, beets which have been cut off, torn off and freed of the soil which adhered to them.
The entire frame supporting the various devices can be towed by a tractor or have its own drive motor. In either case, it is advantageously provided with a steering mechanism acting, for example, on an axle carrying two wheels the spacing of which is such that they exactly frame a radius of beets, the guide of the machine thus being made easier.
The accompanying drawings show an exemplary embodiment of the device that is the subject of the invention and its application to a machine for removing and pulling beets.

fig. 11 is a section through XI-XI of fig. 10; Fig 12 is a partial view, from the rear, of the screw conveyor.
The puller shown in detail in Figs. 1 to 6 consists of three similar sets of coulters 201 placed side by side, the spacing between the axes of two neighboring sets being equal to the distance separating the soft beet rays. Each soe, terminated in a point towards the front, is slightly curved and has, at its rear part, notches 202. It is fixed, in an adjustable manner, by means of an upright 203, on a transverse bar. 204 common to all coulters. The connection between the uprights 203 and the bar 204 is ensured, in a known manner, by flanges such as 205 and 206 and wedge-shaped locks 207.
The bar 204 is guided, at each end, by two guide pieces 208-209 integral with the side members of a frame 211 carried by wheels, these guide pieces being united by a guard plate 210. Vers. the ends of the bar
204, on each side and inside the frame, are fixed two vertical U irons 212 which extend above and below said bar 204. Each iron 212 is applied, by its wings, on two rollers 213 mounted for rotation in a yoke 214 integral with a spacer 215 of the frame 211.
On the other hand, on the bottom of each iron 212 and in the part of the latter which extends above the bar 204 is fixed a rack 216 which cooperates with a toothed sector 217 wedged on a shaft 218 bearing to the 'a .., at its ends a lever 218a which is integral with it. Coulters

The mechanical rake which has the role of clearing the sheets cut by the bar stripper and which is placed between the latter and the pulling device which has just been described, consists of four bars 301 provided with teeth formed of fixed metal rods 302. to said bars by their upper end which is wound in a spiral so as to form a spring.
These bars 301 are arranged obliquely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the frame of the machine and their ends, bent so as to lie in a plane perpendicular to this axis, having flanges 305 by which they are fixed on brackets. collars 306 mounted loosely on pins 307 which also hold the bars 301 and which are arranged, for the ends of the bars 301 which are located to the left with respect to the longitudinal axis of the frame, at the ends of the four arms of a spider 308, perpendicular to these arms, and, for the opposite ends of bars 301, at the ends of the four arms of a spider 309.
The spider 308 is wedged on a shaft 310 pivoting in a support 311 articulated freely on the gaucho spar of the frame 101 of the machine by means of a pin 312.
The spider 309 is, for its part, wedged on a tree

a threaded rod 318 terminated by a square and which, resting on the support 314, serves the latter as an adjustable stop. A housing
319, integral with the support 314, envelops and protects the outer part of the spider 309.
On the end of the shaft 313 opposite the spider
309 is wedged a toothed wheel 320 connected, by a chain 321, to a pinion 322 integral with the shaft 315. '' On the latter is also wedged a pinion 323 connected, by a chain 324, to another pinion 325 integral with the aforementioned shaft 124, controlled by the wheels of the machine. A tensioning device, consisting of a pinion 327 rotatably mounted in a yoke 328 articulated on one of the spacers 102 of the frame 101 and subjected to the action of a spring: return 329, rests on the chain 324.
Finally, a chain 330 is secured by one of its ends to the lower part of the support 314. This chain
330 passes over a return pulley 331 mounted in a yoke carried by the aforesaid spacer 102 of the frame 101 and its other end is fixed to a grooved sector 332 wedged on the same shaft 123 as the lifting sectors 25 of the bar turning machine.
At the rear of the frame 101 and after the upper hedgehog 219 is disposed, transversely to the longitudinal axis of the machine, a conveyor comprising an endless conveyor belt 251 stretched at its ends over two rollers 252 and 253 and framed laterally. by back partitions 254 and 255. The end of the conveyor, which protrudes on the left of the machine by a length substantially equal to four times the interval between two beet spokes, is supported by wheels 256 and a tensioner 257 ensures the rigidity of the whole.
The roller 253, which drives the belt 251 from right to left with respect to the longitudinal axis of the frame 101, is connected, by a reference of bevel gears 258, to a shaft 259 which receives its movement, by means of a cardan transmission
260, from tree 219 of the upper hedgehog.
The side wall 254 is interrupted behind the hedgehogs and a plate 261, in which there are notches 262 intended to allow the rods 220 of the last hedgehog to pass, is arranged at the level of the mat 251. In the side partition 255 two openings 263 are made which can be closed off by doors 264. Behind the opening 263 closest to the longitudinal axis of the frame 101 is placed a slide 265 in an arc of a circle. The ports 264 open towards the belt 251 and are long enough to come to be interposed at an angle over the entire width of the said belt, resting on the wall 254.
The distances between the discharge end of the conveyor and the hinge of the first door 264, on the one hand, and between this hinge and the edge of the slide 265, on the other hand, are substantially equal to each other and slightly greater each. twice the interval between two beet combs.
In the machine's rest position, the connecting rod
119 and the connecting rod 121 are pushed forward, as are the levers 119a and 122. The toothed sector 217 and the rack 216 keep the bar 204 which supports the coulters 201 raised. Likewise, the grooved sectors 25, tending them. chains 24, keep the bar turners in their upper position and the grooved sector 332, by means of the chain 330, retains the support 314 of the rake in the air, the latter also being raised.
¯ None of the devices may come into contact with the ground.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The clutch 112 is disengaged and the wheels 103 can turn without driving the shaft 114.
To harvest the beets, proceed as follows:
The machine, hitched behind a tractor, is brought to the beet field, the wheels 126 straddling the second spoke and the projecting end of the transporter facing the outside of the field: By acting on the hand lever 118, we releases the biollette 119 and the connecting rod 121. The levers 119a and
122 are folded back and forth and the various devices, namely the cutting discs 15, the teeth 302 of the rake and the coulters 201 come into contact with the ground. Finally, the shafts 114 and 111 are made solid by means of clutch 112.
The machine, ready to operate, is then started up, the driver seated on seat 135 taking care to keep it exactly in the axis of the beet radius reached by the wheels.
126 of the front axle.
The shoe 10, arriving against a beet, layer its leaves and, leaning on the top of the collar, lifts the whole of the bar-turning device which pivots slightly around its axes 7, overcoming the action of the spring 2.9. cutting disc 15, rotated at high speed by the shaft
124 and by means of the wheel 19, the chain 18 and the pinions 17, then cuts the neck of the beet, the curved fins 16 immediately rejecting the cut leaves (fig.
5). Thanks to the guidance provided by the shoe 10 and the. movement of. tilting of the bar turning machine, the latter always cuts a slice of the neck of rigorously constant thickness equal to the interval between the edge 11 of the shoe 10 and the cutting edge of the disc 15, whatever the height of the beet at above the ground. The tensioner 21 makes it possible to keep the tension of the chain 18 constant despite the movements of the pinions 17 on the vertical.
The three turning devices work in parallel, each on a radius, the cutting disc 15 of the middle device rotating in the opposite direction to the discs of the end devices.
The pinion 325, also fixed on the shaft 124, drives in rotation, by means of the chain transmission and pinions 324-323-322-321-320, the shaft 313 which supports the crosspiece 309 of the mechanical rake. . The rotation of the spider 309 drives the bars 301 which pass in turn, from right to the left of the machine, to their extreme lower position, the spider 308 reproducing the movement of the spider 309. In this movement of the bars 301, the tines 302 sweep the ground and gradually push back to the left of the machine the cut sheets which are strewn on the ground behind the bar stripper, thus preparing the ground for the pulling which immediately follows.
The wheel 103 on the right moving between two spokes of beets which have not yet been turned and torn off would run the risk of crushing the leaves of the latter, which would be detrimental to the proper functioning of the bar turners. This drawback is avoided thanks to the slug placed in front of said wheel 103, the point of which engages between the two spokes and raises the beet leaves, which do not fall until after the wheel has passed.
In the movement of the machine, each
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
coulter sets 201 sinks slightly into the ground as they move along a beet comb. These are caught in the triangular opening formed between the sec s 201 of the same set and are torn from the ground. The new beets which appear between the coulters 201 push back those which have just been pulled out, which are immediately seized by the fingers 220 of the hedgehogs 219. These are driven in rotation by means of the sets of chains and of pinions 224 rt 225, subjected to Inaction of the transmission 227 è 232, which connects them to the wheel 116 carried by the shaft 114.
The fingers 220, passing from front to back in their upper position, cause the beets torn by the coulters 201 to rise up to the conveyor belt 251 which moves under the action of the driven roller 253, via of transmission 258-259-260, by the upper hedgehog. During their passage over the hedgehogs, the beets are violently shaken and thus freed of the soil which adheres to them.
When pulling out the first three spokes, open the door 264 closest to the axis of the machine.
The torn beets are transported by the belt 251 to this door which forms a barrier and are led to the slide 265 from where they fall on the ground at. forming a pile in a line parallel to the combs,
When the removal of the first three spokes is completed, the same procedure is used for that of the next three spokes, the protruding part of the conveyor always being turned towards the outside of the field. Care is taken, for this operation, to close the door 264 closest to the axis of the machine and to open the next one. The torn beets then fall through the corresponding opening 263, substantially on the heap which was made during the tearing of the three pi, emlers rays.
Likewise, for the next three shelves, the previously opened door 264 is closed and the torn beets come out at the end of the belt 251, falling on the same pile.
A single, continuous line heap is thus obtained for nine torn combs, which considerably simplifies the operation of collecting torn beets.
Continuing the work in the same way, the beets are removed and pulled simultaneously by three combs at the same time, forming a linear pile of beets pulled out every nine combs.
If, during cornering maneuvers, for example, the wheels 103 move backwards or take on different rotational speeds, the wheel which moves back and forth or which is driven at a greater speed will act alone. on the drive mechanism of the various devices, thanks to catches 107-108.
When the work is finished, the clutch is engaged in time 117 by acting on the hand lever 118 and the machine is moved forward. The connecting rod 119 is driven forwards, which has the effect of causing the levers 119a and 221 to tilt back and forth. The shaft 120 pivots by driving, on the one hand, the toothed sectors 217 which, acting on the racks, raise the bar 204 of the coulter support 201 and, on the other hand, the lever 144 which, by the chain 143, pushes the shoe 137 to the-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
turn of the axis 140, by raising its point. Shaft 123 also pivots by entraining sectors 25 and 332. These act respectively on chains 24 and 330 which lift, on the one hand, the turning devices and, on the other hand, the rake for clearing the leaves. .
The timing clutch automatically ceases to function when the devices are fully raised, causing breakage or damage to the lifting members. This operation is therefore carried out without any effort and the machine can thus be transported, on the road for example, the clutch 112 having been previously disengaged by disconnecting the shafts 111 and 114.
Instead of being constituted by an endless conveyor belt, the transporter may be of the Archimedean screw type, as shown in FIGS. 10 to 12. In this case, a trough 266 is disposed at the rear of the frame 101, transversely to the longitudinal axis of the latter. This trough, which protrudes on the left of the machine by the same length as the aforementioned conveyor, rests at its outer end, like the latter, on wheels 256, a mower 257 ensuring the rigidity of the assembly. In addition, support legs 267, connecting the rear edge of the trough 266 to the frame 101 prevent deformation of the latter. The plate 261, allowing the passage of the teeth of the last hedgehog, is fixed on the anterior edge of the trough.
In the trough 266 is disposed a propeller 268 whose turns are fixed on a shaft 269 supported at three points, in a known manner, by bearings fixed in brackets 270 (fig, 11) themselves secured to bars 271 bringing together both edges of the trough. The propeller can be driven either by means of a toothed wheel 272 wedged on the end of the shaft 269 which is located towards the left of the machine, this wheel being connected by a chain 273 to another wheel 274 wedged on the end of the shaft 259, or using a toothed wheel 275 wedged on the other end of the shaft 269 and connected by a chain 276, passing through a notch 277 made in the trough 266, to a wheel 278 wedged on the shaft 219 of the hedgehog closest to the rear of the machine,
or by these two means simultaneously, these drive modes being mentioned only by way of example.
In the lower part of the trough 266, the trough open at its end situated towards the left of the machine, there are openings 279 and 280 corresponding to the openings 263 made in the side wall 255 of the conveyor described above. These openings can be closed by ports 281, articulated on the trough 266 by means of hinges 282 and provided at 283 with a closing device.
When the first three combs of beet are pulled out, the door 281 is opened, closing the opening 279.
The torn beets are poured over the plate 261 into the trough 266 and are entrained by the propeller to the opening 279 through which they fall to the ground, forming a pile in a line parallel to the shelves.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
For the next three shelves, the door 281 which has been opened beforehand is closed and the key which closed the opening 280 is opened. The arradhea beets then pass through the opening 279 and fall through the opening 280, substantially on the pile already. form. Finally, for the next three shelves, the two doors 281 are closed and the beets come to the end of the trough 266 from where they always fall on the same pile. Here too, we get a single pile of beets and line all the nine torn combs.
It can be seen that, thanks to the machine which has just been described, the beet harvesting operation can be carried out extremely quickly and in the best possible conditions, both from the point of view of regularity of the neckline and from the point of view of The view makes it easier to collect torn beets or cut leaves, the latter being gathered in a linear pile every three shelves.
The machine according to the invention makes it possible to carry out, with three drivers, namely one for the tractor and two for the machine, the same work as 30 men operating by hand, the beets being able to be cut, torn off and cleaned at a rate of about 10 to 20 per second.
